There will be a book signing for a major new volume about local Native Americans, entitled “Handbook of the Kawaiisu,” on Saturday, July 9 at the Nuui Cunni Indian Cultural Center at French Gulch.

The authors, Kawaiisu Elder Harold Williams and archaeologist Alan Garfinkel, will have signed copies of the book available to purchase. Several Elders and contributors will be on hand to speak.

The Kawaiisu tribal territory borders the southern side of the Kern Valley and includes Tehachapi and much of the Mojave desert to the east.

The Kern Valley Indian Council and the Owens Valley Career Development Center will be assisting with this event.

Lunch will be catered by Mt. Mesa Market’s Jim Wyly. All are invited to attend.

June Walker Price, a Kawaiisu Elder and a board member of the Kern Valley Indian Council, said “It is a pleasure to see a book that is so carefully put together. The book seems to me to be a product of so much time and effort. And to have so many of my people, the Kawaiisu themselves, to be such a very big part of something like this makes me happy. It makes me glad to see so many pictures of my people — the Kawaiisu families, children, men and women — that is important.”

When summer really sets in and it’s scorching outside and the kids are restless, where can you go? Try the libraries.

The hours of the three Kern River Valley libraries were cut again recently, but you can still go to one of the local libraries every day of the week except Sunday and Monday.

The Lake Isabella branch is open Tuesdays 11-7, Thursdays 11-7 and Saturdays 9-5.

Wofford Heights is open Wednesdays 10-6 and Fridays 9-5, and Kernville is open Fridays 10-5.

Youth leader asks for help Mike Devich Kern River Courier

Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership is one of the country’s most important youth leadership programs. Founded in 1958 by actor O’Brien, HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop a global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. Today, there are many thousands of productive graduates of the program.

Last year a local Kern Valley High School student, Daniel Wilson, was selected to represent the school at HOBY. This year, he achieved a special honor when he was chosen to attend the HOBY World Leadership Congress, which will be held at Loyola University in Chicago July 2330.

Wilson is asking for your help with the costs associated with this trip.

Spay Days to ease problem Mike Devich Kern River Courier

Coming next month will be the first of two so-called “Spay Days” in Lake Isabella.

Spaying and neutering cats and dogs will help control the explosion of animals that are either turned loose to fend for themselves, or turned over to a shelter, where many are euthanized.

There is a move afoot to start a low-cost spay/neuter mobile clinic, and fundraisers have been held by the REVA Co-op to help stem the tide.

Another effort will be held in the Vons parking lot in Lake Isabella on two dates, Saturday August 20 and Saturday, Oct. 22 from 7am to 4pm. They are being put on by the Los Angeles-based Basic Needs Foundation, and are free to the public.

“Animal overpopulation is a tragic problem everywhere, but especially in many small towns, primarily because low income pet owners can’t afford to spay/neuter their pets and they don’t have access to free clinics,” said Ha Adolfo, Founder of the Basic Needs Foundation.

Up to 45 animals will be spayed/neutered at each event. Feral cats will be vaccinated, medicated for ear mites and ear tipped. Low cost vaccinations and microchipping will also be available on both dates from 9am to noon.

“Each pet owner will receive all required documents to get their pet licensed immediately with spay/neuter certificate, vaccination record, rabies shot and microchip,“ said Adolfo.

According to the National Weather Service, we here in the Kern River Valley need cooling 18% of the year and heating 35% of the year. 46% of the year we don't need cooling or heating!

So our energy costs to heat and Rowe cool are much less than many places.

Evaporative cooling is well-suited for climates where the air is hot and humidity is low, like the KRV. The evaporative cooler (aka "swamp cooler") was a U.S. invention (U.S. patent #838602, 1906 John Zellweger of St. Louis, Mo).

Although there are several varieties of swamp coolers, they are basically just a box with a fan that blows air through a wet pad into your house or building. Compared to air conditioning, swamp coolers are a lot less expensive to install and fix. And they are a lot less expensive to operate, maybe just 25% the electricity cost.

When I lived in the Palm Springs area, I was told that with humidity over 40%, forget the swamp cooler and turn on the A/C. But that old wives' tale was off base. Humidity makes a difference, but is only half the story. The

key factor is the Dew Point – the temperature at which the air must be cooled for water vapor to condense, forming water droplets, fog or clouds. With the moisture in the air staying the same as the temperature increases, the Dew Point goes down.

If the Dew Point is 55ºF or more, swamp coolers won't not work as well, maybe only lowering the temperature by 10ºF. Check for the prevailing Dew Point in your area by going to KRVR.org, look for "Kern River Valley Weather Info" at lower left.

Clicking on the Wofford Heights Remote Automated Weather Station at 11:30am, the Dew Point was 50.7°. The Dew Point will go down to close to 40ºF at the hottest time of the day, say 3pm. With that lower Dew Point, a swamp cooler should be able to reduce the air temperature 20 to 30ºF. When you run your AC, close the place up; but with a swamp cooler, be sure to have a way for cooled air to get out. It’s best at the far corners of the space you want to cool. If the air can't get out easily, the fan motor strains and the inside humidity can get hideously high without much cooling effect.

Bodfish Bob’s Basic Salsa 2 cups seeded, chopped tomatoes (67 medium tomatoes) The leaves from one bunch of fresh cilantro, chopped 6 cloves fresh chopped garlic 1/2 an onion chopped 1 jalapeno, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon salt About 1 tablespoon lime juice

Mix all ingredients until well incorporated.

Refrigerate overnight for maximum flavor.

Bodfish Bob's Veggie Burgers 1/2 onion, diced 1 can black beans, well drained 1/2 cup flour 2 slices bread, crumbled 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp onion powder 1/2 tsp seasoned salt Salt and pepper to taste Oil for frying

4 bananas 1/2 C. Brown sugar — firmly packed 1/4 C. Orange or pineapple juice 3 Tbsp. Sherry 1/2 C. Chopped almonds or Macadamia nuts 2 Tbsp. Butter or margarine 1 Dash nutmeg

Peel bananas and place in a small baking dish. Mix together, then pour over bananas brown sugar, orange or pineapple juice and sherry. Saute the chopped nuts in butter and sprinkle over bananas. Add dash of nutmeg to taste if desired. Bake in a moderate oven at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until bananas are tender and lightly glazed. Serve as a dessert with a spoonful of sauce over each banana. Serves 4.

Several years ago, a recently widowed lady went into her local guitar store with her deceased husband’s classic guitar looking to sell it for some needed cash. The store manager recognized that this guitar was special, and called in a consultant to authenticate the guitar.

The specialist Harry Thal looks over the guitar and tells the lady that the guitar is worth about three-fifty.

She says she was looking for and hoping for five hundred. The gentleman tells her that he does need to make a profit, and has a buyer waiting for the sale. He tells her that he can pay her two eightyfive. She again states that she was hoping for five hundred.

“Ma’am, I don't think you understand. This guitar is a classic and there were only 60 made in the entire world. I am offering you $285,000 for it.”

Integrity is the key. The guitar store could have made a killing, but ethics and integrity had the company do the right thing. So is it in insurance sales. The role of the agent is very much like the salesman in the guitar store. The agent does the right thing for the sake of the client, not that of mak-

ing another sale for a bigger commission. What is wrong with selling a policy for $0 monthly premium versus a plan for several hundred dollars a month? The issue is what is best for the client.

A good agent gets involved.

Not only assisting with the application and enrollment process, but all the service needed after the sale. The voice of the Colt Peacemaker drowned out the murmur of voices and clinking of coins in Deadwood’s Number Ten Saloon, its leaden message plowing through the head of a seated card player and coming to rest in the arm of the man he had been facCalifornia Joe ing. The time was 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 1876. The roar of the gun and a grunted “Take that!” were possibly the last sounds to reach the consciousness of the man who slid from the stool.

It was almost certain that he was dead by the time he hit the floor, clutching his last hand of cards – the aces and eights that were to give the term “dead man’s hand” to the language.

Thus ended the spectacular career of Wild Bill Hickok, the 39year old pistoleer who had been born James Butler Hickok at Troy Grove, Ill., on March 27, 1837.

The following are two other occurrences in his incredible life.

In 1858 he was a stage and wagon driver along the Sante Fe Trail. Now folks were calling him Bill and it was as Bill Hickok that he had his famous encounter with a grizzly. He was driving a wagon

through New Mexico’s Raton Pass and although Bill succeeded in bowie-knifing the bear to death, when the next wagon in the convoy arrived on the scene Bill was seriously wounded. His employers got Bill patched up, then sent him to Kansas City where he was under medical care until the spring of ‘61.

A few days before Christmas 1867,a dusty buckskinned figure with twin guns (butt foremost) and tongue exploring parched lips stepped into a shanty bar in Nebraska to order up a beer. This was Wild Bill the plainsman. Four beery customers were evidently unaware of this and used language that dwelled on Bill’s nasal organ and his untrimmed ox-yoke mustache. He gave one of the men a blow in the face, an act that sparked the quartet into going for their guns.

When the powder smoke haze had cleared three of the baiters lay dead and and one was minus a part of his jaw. Wild Bill’s souvenir of this action –a slight arm wound which kept him out of action for a few weeks.

August 2,1876 in Deadwood’s Number Ten Saloon – the death of Wild Bill Hickok. There’s more to the story than this, You’ll have to come to my yearly stage show to hear the rest of it.

Things I Have Noticed...

Kern River Valley has it all Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist

By the time you finish reading this week’s column, you will probably think I have been commissioned by the two chamber of commerces here in the Valley ... but I think many of you will admit that you feel the same way.

I got to thinking about what makes the Kern Middleworth River Valley so popular with visitors and the long- and short-time residents.

So I made a list. I noticed we have gas stations, grocery stores, auto repair shops, auto parts stores, and great restaurants all around the lake. We have appliance stores, drug stores, fast food places, churches, a movie theatre. We have three local newspapers. We have service clubs, and several parks and picnic areas. We have a museum, we have motels for vacationing travelers, and we have bed and breakfast accommodations. We have an airport and a radio-controlled flying field. And we have a lake. Oh what a lake! We have a multitude of hiking trails and access to the Pacific Crest Trail.

There is a mortuary, a champi-

onship horseshoe field, an Indian Cultural Center, several marinas, a TV cable system, satellite access, a surplus store, a boat patrol, several hardware stores, a host of camping sites, and the Kern River (a wonder in itself).

We have all kinds of repair and construction businesses (auto, plumbing, roofing, concrete, electrical, and building contractors). There is more; probably whatever you can need we have it up here or it can be gotten.

We live in a valley where people come to vacation. They drive from all over to camp and visit the place where we’re lucky to live. In the spring we have flowers and hillsides splashed with color. We have a hospital with all the bells and whistles to keep us alive in times of trauma. We have trailer parks and areas all around the lake to camp.We have bait shops and a great shoreline to catch lunker fish.

We have road access to the high country and when it’s hot it’s just a short drive to the cool. And so much more.

What a wonderful place to live!

A bit of history Two towns, Kernville and Isabella, had to be moved out of the way during the forming of the lake in the late 1940s and ‘50s. Isabella was moved slightly south and renamed Lake Isabella, and Kernville was moved a few miles north. The town of Wofford Heights is closest to the location of Old Kernville; Old Isabella was near where the Auxiliary Dam is today.

After the dams came in, the area was promoted as a recreation destination and as a perfect area for retirement, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Later on, in the second half of the 20th century, whitewater rafting became a huge sport here. Recently, the valley has become known as a premier mountain biking area, and a mountain bike manufacturer has relocated here, Bionicon.
