Downey doesn’t disappoint By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” (PG-13) — Robert Downey Jr. puts his swagger and eccentricity into Sherlock Holmes in this second installment of Holmes as directed by Guy Ritchie. Don’t expect a slowly unraveling mystery — this movie is more like the adventures of Iron Man if he didn’t have his suit and lived in Victorian-era England. Just like last time, it has more explosions and brawling than you might remember from the original stories, but the resulting experience is more fun than you expect. Besides action, Downey and Jude Law (back as Dr. Watson) have plenty of quips. The story also mixes in more brain with its brawn, as Holmes is pulled into the mind games of Moriarty. “Good Deeds” (PG-13) — When Tyler Perry steps out of the fat suit and wig, he’s all business. This movie starring, written and directed by the prolific Perry is one of his serious ones, and the movie will not let you forget it. Perry plays Wesley Deeds, an uptight, wealthy businessman who has had his whole life

handed to him since he was born. While Deeds questions whether his life is the one he wants, he Robert Downey Jr. in forms a “Sherlock Holmes” bond with a destitute single mother who cleans his office. The central relationship isn’t a romantic one, but a centerpiece for the script’s meditations on morality, fairness and charity. It’s ultimately a thoughtful, sober drama. “In Darkness” (R) — As the Nazis march through Poland, an anti-Semitic sewer worker finds himself taking money from Jews in exchange for hiding them in the city sewers. The film is based on the true story of Leopold Socha. As he realizes how much risk he’s taking just to get money out these desperate people, he becomes uncertain of his motivation. Could it be money, fear or humanity? © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Fish shore bite good Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier Columnist Parents' don't forget that this Saturday is the Kids Fishing Derby. Registration will be held at Wofford Hts. Park. There will be lots of gifts and prizes. Call Elaine Mencarini Johnson for details @ 760-417- 0950. The bass bite from the shore has

been very good as my friend Jim

Vhla shows off a nice fish caught from the shore. Over the last week I caught quite a few bass in the 2 pound class. Most of these bass had not spawned yet so all were released. My guess is there will be a late spawn, so get in on the bass bite. The crappie bite is also very good with mostly nice fish being caught from the shore. I broke down and bought some minnows and the crappie much preferred the live bait over jigs, even the trout were hitting the minnows. The trout were very nice in the three pound class with a lot of fight. The catfish bite from the shore is also on the upswing with the channels averaging three pounds. In general the fishing from the shore is good to excellent with all species cooperating. The fishing in the Upper and Lower Kern River remains very good with fish everywhere. Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and a avid fisherman. For questions or comments you can reach him through the Kern River Courier, office@kern rivercourier.com.

Fully come Jack Duitsman, Pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville And when the day of Pentecost had fully come . . . - Acts 2:1 The longpromised coming of the Holy Spirit caused an uncomfortable Duitsman stir as did the coming of Jesus, the long promised Messiah. As human hearts would panic at the embodiment of salvation’s plan as it unfolded in the life and death (resurrection) of Jesus, so the Holy Spirit’s coming would again panic the human heart at the outworking of redemptive life. If only we could get to the bottom of our resistance to the Father’s plan, and realize that nothing He does to arrest sin’s development and turn us back to the ways of righteousness will ever sit well with our pride and arrogance. This idea of control was and is only an illusion however, for in rebelling from Divine direction for our lives, humanity did not gain the control we sought, but rather turned it over to the diabolic determinations of the adversary. Because we are built to worship (follow) rather than to lead, there will always be a direction other than

our own that gives course to our lives. Enter then the Holy Spirit to work out salvation’s plan as brought to us through Jesus our Savior, and the difficulty becomes crystal clear. His purpose in our lives is to flesh out the heart of God on an ongoing and lifelong basis, and as that is His aim, He continually counters the determination of our hearts to follow after another way. We marked another Pentecost Sunday May 27 (50 days following Easter Sunday), and are reminded of the Father’s plan in sending the Holy Spirit to His people. In seasons of abundance, and through discouraging stretches of our path, we can and should be embraced and strengthened to return control of our lives to the Lordship of Jesus through simple trust and childlike faith that He knows what He is doing. And yes, the earmarks of Spirit controlled living found highlighted in the book of Acts, and everywhere else in Scripture, ought to be alive and growing in their power in our lives. Dear hearts, let’s be Holy Spirit led and controlled people, trusting wholly in the Father’s plan for our lives, and exuding all the fruit (see Galatians 5:22-23) of this kind of living. That the Church has never done this perfectly is no reason for us not to strive forward welcoming the Kingdom of God among us, and being the bright lights of salvation’s proclamation to all humanity.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on the notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgages, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 661-945-5525 using the file number 12-2202. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet web site. Over the past few weeks, I have been discussing PPACA and COBRA/Cal-COBRA. The COBRA laws provide continuation of employer-sponsored health benefits after a worker leaves employment under “honorable” circumstances. Termination may negate the benefit. If a person falls into this unfortunate situation or they have exhausted their COBRA/Cal-COBRA benefits, another set of letters in our “alphabet soup” may help obtain health insurance: HIPAA. HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, will have different definitions, depending on who you ask. Ask your doctor, therapist, lawyer or banker, and they will tell you that it is a law that protects your privacy. Ask an insurance agent, and he/she will tell you that it guarantees you the ability to purchase health insurance even if you can’t medically qualify.

Alphabet Soup, part 4 Samuel is 61 and needed to retire early as he had many medical issues and couldn’t perform on the job. He tried to get an individual health insurance policy when he first decided to retire, but was Thal unable to pass the medical underwriting requirements of the insurance plans he had applied for. Sam needed to make his decision to elect his COBRA benefits within 63 days of the group plan’s ending. He went on COBRA, and 18 months later, still unable to qualify, took advantage of the Cal-COBRA law and continued his coverage. Sam is now 64 and has run out his COBRA options, but still has close to a year to go before he qualifies for Medicare. He once again applies for an individual policy, and once again he can’t qualify medically. His medical situation was such that the insurance company wouldn’t pro-

vide coverage, even at a higher rate. But, his health insurance agent advised him of a law called HIPAA, which forces the insurance company to provide coverage. The insurance company must offer their two most popular selling plans to anyone who has exhausted the COBRA/CalCOBRA benefit. The coverage must be without a break in coverage. Sam’s agent made sure that the original application stated that he wanted the HIPAA option if declined for regular coverage. Sam was offered a good plan at a costly price. As he is taking expensive medications, and really needs the coverage, the cost was a problem, but not an issue. He remained insured and awaited his 65th birthday and finally becoming eligible for Medicare. Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker in California (0621106).
