Pedestrian program receives $775,000 in funds for improvements Judy Hyatt Special to the Courier

Sal Aguilar, 1139 Sycamore Drive, Wofford Heights planted this Century Plant seven years ago. The plant grew to 15 feet, eight inches in height. “I can’t imagine how such a large bloom came from such a small plant,” Aguilar said.

Century Plants bloom only once in their life, the blooming spike is so large and grows so fast that it saps all the resources of the plant, which then dies, leaving a tall wooden seed stalk.

The plant is called the "century plant" because of this "once a century" bloom (actually the plant lives an average of 25 years). The Century Plant provided Native Americans with a source of soap, food, fiber, medicine and weapons.

Also known as Parry's Agave, Century Plants can grow up to 40 feet high with much longer leaves and larger stalk.

It is used commercially in Mexico as a source to produce the liquors tequila, pulque and mescal.

The CA Transportation Commission has allocated $775,000 to Kern County/Kern Council of Governments for the completion of pedestrian improvements in the community of Kernville. The funding is provided by Proposition 1B, a transportation bond approved by voters in 2006.

For the Kern River Valley, the funding will complete the pedestrian improvements and provide multi-modal transportation opportunities for the residents and visitors of Kernville. Portions of the project were previously completed. Kernville Road has been re-striped and crosswalks have been marked. Bike lanes have been identified as well as parking along Kernville Road.

"This project will provide increased safety for the pedestrians and bicycle riders in Kernville" stated Supervisor McQuiston.

"Visitors will appreciate the ability to move about the community with greater ease."

There have been three fires in the last two weeks. The the dry grass, winds and drought conditions are contributing to the danger of having a long, hot fire season. Residents and visitors need to use extreme caution in all outdoor activities.

The Campground fire in Weldon, which started around noon on Wednesday, burned on Highway 178, across from the KOA campground. At about 1 p.m. the fire was 100% contained at 11.4 acres. The fire was believed to be caused by a downed power line.

Another fire burned east of Caliente on Monday afternoon. Kern County Fire Department Capt. Derek Tisinger said the blaze was sparked just before 2:15 p.m. in the area near Twin Oaks by a man mowing grass behind his home in the 13900 block of Back Canyon Road. When the first fire crew arrived, breeze was light and the fire was only a couple of acres. But the winds picked up and blew the fire across the road, threatening about a dozen houses, Tisinger said. The fire grew to about 137 acres.

The George Fire burned more than 1700 acres since it began on June 1 near the George Bush Tree in the Giant Sequoia National Monument, Sequoia National Forest. As many as 1,000 firefighters and support staff worked to halt the fires spread, hampered by gusty winds and steep terrain. No Sequoia trees were damaged in the fire.

Approximately 15% of open fire line remains in very steep and rough terrain on the east side of the fire in the Little Kern River drainage. Hotshot crews have been flown into the fires edge on helicopters where they are working to fully contain the Fire. Crews will use natural barriers when necessary to completely secure line around the George Fire.

The Lloyd Meadow Road will remain closed north of Lower Peppermint Campground until crews assess and repair large sections of the road that were heavily damaged by fire equipment. The Golden Trout Wilderness can be accessed through the Lewis Camp, Clicks Creek, or Summit Trailheads. Lightning has been ruled out as the cause of the George Fire. nature

New Bike Plan public workshop June 16 A public workshop will be held on Saturday, June 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Senior Center in Lake Isabella to review the Draft Bicycle Master Plan and Complete Streets Recommendations for Kern County with an emphasis on the Kern River Valley.

The purpose of the meeting is to explain the plan and collect comments to submit to KernCOG and the consultants Alta Planning + Design who prepared the plan which recommends improved bicycle and pedestrian facilities and programs to be implemented over the next 20 years.

I think we need to rethink the reward for information leading to the arrest of the shooters at the CHP officer. If we are becoming a poorer nation, we cannot tolerate anyone shooting at our officials at any level, for any reason.

Therefore we should offer a standard witness protection agency package to anyone who comes forward. A “no tolerance” policy is the only way to maintain a society of law and order.

Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist A friend of mine and I were chatting about some of the things we say for effect and if thought about, need further explanation.

Things like “I’ll give it a lick and a promise.” Lick what Middleworth and promise who?

How about “It’s raining cats and dogs?” Where?

And do they bark and meow? After a rainstorm are the animal control officers extra busy? How did they get into the clouds, and do they get wet?

These are “ponderful” thoughts.

Another is; “A watched pot never boils.” What is a watchpot and who cares if it boils? Boils what?

Or how about this: “He was a Bad Penny.” Couldn’t he be a “Defective Dime,” or a “Rotten Nickel?” And how bad do you have to be, to become illegal tender?

There’s the old “A stitch in time saves nine.” What kind of stitch, and what if it saved 10? The real question is saving nine of what?

And do you use a basting or an embroidery stitch?

What about this saying: “It’s a forgone conclusion.” Does that mean if it’s not quite as important, it could be a “three-gone conclusion” or if it’s very important, then could

it be a “five-gone conclusion?”

Heavy stuff!

Here’s another: “Dead as a doornail.” Now this is one you can ponder on. First off, what does a doornail look like, and if you find one, how do you know it’s dead? Or conversely what does a live doornail look like? And of course, does it hurt to hit them with a hammer and if so, it’s no wonder they’re dead!

Along these same lines is the saying “You can't get blood out of a turnip.” But what if you could?

What type blood would it be?

Would you use a “tournipquet” to stop any bleeding? Serious questions for sure.

Still another saying that begs for explanation is this one: “He slept like a log.” Really? What kind of log? Ash, pine, redwood, elm? And do they each sleep differently? Do they snore? And of course, which kind of log would you sleep like? If you are the kind of person who worries, then the questions above could keep you awake. And here’s a final question: How high is “Knee High to a Grasshopper?” Imagine trying to measure a hopping grasshopper with a yardstick while asking yourself what am I doing and why?

By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Artist” (PG-13) — Yes, this is the silent one. A movie that came out last year was made without sound or color, and then it brought home five Oscars, including best picture and best actor. It’s natural to suspect it’s a high-brow snoozefest — it’s a silent film that came out in 2011, and yet all the critics love it.

But there’s nothing inaccessible about it; it’s just an old-fashioned movie that entertains.

Set in 1927, George Valentin (Jean DuJardin) is the biggest star on the silent-movie scene just as talkies are about to take off. While his career loses momentum and starts to fall, young actress Peppy Miller (Bernice Bejo) starts her climb to the top.

“21 Jump Street” (R) — Loosely (very loosely) based on the ‘80s TV drama of the same name, this film knows it has a dumb premise, and uses that as comedy fuel. A police department that’s run out of original

ideas (wink) decides to recycle an old idea by putting two youthful cops Jean DuJardin and undercovBernice Bejo in “The er in a Artist” local high school to break up a drug ring that’s targeting the kids.

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill play the cops, Schmidt and Jenko.

Hill’s character still has some resentment over the way he was treated in high school, and Tatum’s character is surprised to find that in modern-day, upper-middle class schools, the jockish bully isn’t guaranteed instant popularity like they were in the ‘80s (or at least ‘80s teen movies.) 4, 6-oz. boneless, skinless chicken breast halves ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp lemon-pepper seasoning 1 T canola oil 8 bacon strips 1 medium onion, sliced ¼ cup packed brown sugar 2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese Sprinkle chicken with salt and lemon-pepper. In a large skillet, cook chicken in oil for 6-7 minutes on each side or until a meat thermometer reads 170°. Remove and keep warm. In the same skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp. Using a slotted spoon, remove to paper towels; drain, reserving two tablespoons drippings. In the drippings, saute onion and brown sugar until onion is tender and golden brown. Place two bacon strips on each chicken breast half; top with caramelized onions and cheese.

There is nothing that soils the character of our Savior. The salvation we have in Jesus is good. The comfort we have in Christ is good. The wisdom we gain by applying God’s principles is good. His answers to prayer are good. His forgiveness is good. His grace is good. Heaven is good. God is so good to us. We can’t help but exclaim His goodness in praise and adoration. Gratitude gushes forth from a heart that has been tamed by the goodness of God. God has been good to us. The recognition of His goodness governs our gratitude. His goodness invites gratitude.

Moreover, He extends His goodness to us personally. It is not just one gigantic, corporate application of goodness to a nation that allows freedom of religion and free enter-

prise. He applies His goodness to our individual situations, as a mother who prepares a delicious meal for her family. Perhaps He has given us a good job, good health, good sense, a good house, and a good family. It is the grace of God that allows us to experience His goodness. When we linger under the cross of Christ, we encounter the shade of His goodness. As the song says, “God is so good. God is so good. God is so good. He’s so good to me.”

Therefore, when we are under the bright light of God’s goodness, any influence of bad is blinded. Gratitude and a bad attitude cannot coexist. Take the time to list the good things the Lord has done for you.

Keep your list close by so when you are tempted to complain over trivial issues like waiting in line, or not getting what you want, you can apply gratitude. His goodness beckons us to be good.

Goodness gives off goodness. We are “carriers” for Christ. We are good to others because God has been good to us. Our goodness does not discriminate. We are good to others even when they are undeserving. This is the nature of God’s goodness. Be patient with the one who doesn’t deserve patience. Love the one who’s done nothing to deserve love. Forgive the one who doesn’t deserve forgiveness.
