Pool party to help program Mike Devich Kern River Courier

The big event this weekend remind us all that summertime is definitely here – it’s the big annual pool party at the South Fork Middle School pool tomorrow, Saturday June 25. Be there when it begins at 11 a.m. and stay for the whole thing. It ends at 2 p.m. There will be lots of poolside fun as the summertime swimming program at the pool, called the Kern Valley Aquatics Program, puts on this fundraiser to bene-

fit the not-for-profit program. KVAP operates solely on donations. The fundraiser is called “SOS,” which stands for Save Our Swimmers. That’s because KVAP is always looking for funds to put on the program, which teaches swimming to kids and adults and provides a safe swimming experience with supervision. The event will include a barbecue, music, pool games, a live and silent auction, and a raffle.

Love hurts: Mike Devich Kern River Courier

You might be tempted to respond to online dating, but make sure your radar is activated – that new love of your life may be someone sitting in an Internet cafe just trying to get your money. Scamnot.com recently posted a story called “The Dangerous Side of Online

And the fires keep coming. A blaze Tuesday in the Greenhorn Mountains along Highway 155 near Woody brought a quick response by firefighters, and the fire was quickly tackled and wrestled to the ground. The blaze was reported at

12:43 p.m. and was dubbed the Quinn Fire. Strong winds pushed the fire to 300 acres before firefighters could respond. Kern County Fire Department crews arrived and were assisted by crews from the Bureau of Land Management and Tulare County Cal Fire. Their quick work created

Romance Scams,” in which they detailed the kind of things that are taking place in today’s online world. It can be a scary and dangerous place. “Scammers search chat rooms, dating sites, and social networking sites looking for victims,” according to the site. Scammers use poetry, flowers, and other gifts to reel in victims. Then they use stories of severe life circumstances,

tragedies, deaths in the family, injuries to themselves, or other hardships to keep their victims concerned and involved in their schemes. Scammers ask victims to send money to help overcome a financial situation they claim to be experiencing. These are all lies intended to take money from unsuspecting victims.

Bob Powers Gateway designs discussed Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier

Designs from the Bob Powers Gateway Preserve strategic plan were presented in the Kernville Chamber of Commerce Community Room on June 16th. The purpose of the workshop was to update the community on the status of strategic planning for the gateway project and to review and discuss phase implementation of preserve plan concepts. Subjects covered included project goals, objectives, opportunities, constraints and alternative concepts. The preserve is an 18-acre alkaline/sub-alkaline wetland and meadow area located at the southeast corner of the intersection of state highways 178 and 155 in Lake Isabella. It is planned to serve as a place where visitors can learn about outdoor recreational, educational and other visitor services available to them when they visit, as well as to preserve and protect the rare alkali wetlands. The preserve is a cooperative project of Kern County, the Kern River Valley Heritage Foundation and grant funding from the

The boat permit station in French Gulch has a collection of torn-up boat propellers. Don’t lose yours; look for rocks just under the surface.

Isabella Lake Boating Regs • Speed Limit: 5 mph (no wake) within 200 feet of shore, within 100 feet of swimmers (other than waterskiers), near docks, marinas or within South Fork Wildlife Area. • Alcohol or Drug Use: Alcohol or drug use is illegal while operating a boat and is a felony if such use causes death or serious injury. Conviction of intoxication while operating a boat may bring a $1,000 fine and six months in jail. Avoiding accidents requires 100% alertness. • Age and Safety Gear Requirements: Boat operators must be at least 16 years old. Each person aboard must have US Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD); water skiers and personal watercraft riders must wear PFDs at all times. • Towing Rules for Waterskiers, Inflatables, Etc: A tow boat must qualify to hold at least 3 people, including an observer at least 12 years old, capable of rescuing an injured waterskier. The observer must raise a red flag whenever a line is out or a skier is preparing to ski or a skier is down. • Right-of-Way Rules: These rules apply to everyone on the water, including windsurfers. As with driving a car, passing is on the right, yielding at a crossing gives the go-ahead to the vessel on the right and overtaking another vessel requires a wide berth. Anchored and sailing vessels usually have the right-of-way. The law says that avoiding a collision takes precedence over insisting on a right-of-way. • Avoidance Measures: Waterskiers, personal watercraft riders and windsurfers often seek the calmer waters near the Auxiliary Dam. These people may reach speeds from 35-70 mph, posing a hazard to each other as well as to boaters. Attempting to judge the speed of an oncoming person is difficult, particularly in a glare or mist; better to simply avoid congestion.

Pass required for certain areas Mike Devich Kern River Courier

Recreational visitors to Lake Isabella need to purchase a pass to be able to take advantage of certain highdensity recreational areas available here. The Southern Sierra Pass is available at Golden State Surplus in Lake Isabella, Riverside One Stop Shell in Kernville, and at either of the two U.S. Forest Service offices in the valley (see page 2). The Southern Sierra Pass is required for recreational use within the Auxiliary Dam, Old Isabella Road and South Fork Recreation areas. Ninety-five percent of the revenue from pass sales goes directly back to these three sites to make improvements such as new restrooms, upgraded water systems, picnic

tables, fire rings, and increased Forest Service presence. Southern Sierra Passes include a $10 daily pass or, for more frequent users, a $50 annual pass. When purchasing an annual pass, an optional second vehicle (yearly) pass is available for $10. Another option, for people 62 or older, is the America the Beautiful (interagency) Senior Pass, honored nationwide at any Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service site. The Senior Pass costs $10 and is valid for the lifetime of the pass holder. A pass for persons with disabilities is also available at no charge. The Southern Sierra Pass has been sold since November 2008 for a small, particularly high-usage area on the shore of Isabella Lake.

Previews of new DVDs by Sam Struckhoff New DVDs reviewed in this column will be available in stores the week of July 5. PICKS OF THE WEEK "Hobo with a Shotgun" (R) -This deranged circus of gore and bad language is a treat for fans of ultra-violence and 1970s exploitation films. That statement should be sufficient warning for those with high taste, because that's as mild as it can be put. "Hobo with a Rutget Hauer Shotgun" is more accurately described as a blood-fueled roller-coaster ride through a riot of craven psychopaths turning to each other for entertainment. The movie starts with the titular vagrant (Rutger Hauer) arriving in Scumtown, a city controlled by a sadistic criminal family. Disgusted by the violence and inhumanity he sees in the streets, a lone drifter becomes the only one to take a stand. The quality of the movie shows throughout, so even as it drives off the cliff of good taste - rolling and burning in the valley below -- you can tell that somebody really cared about the color palette and art direction for this horrific spectacle. "Crack in the World" [Blu-ray] (NR) -- If you need a reminder that today's overblown disasteradventure movies have a rich

and storied ancestry, turn to this flick from 1965. It's a fine specimen of a breed that had to keep the tension going without the aid of computer graphics. When Dr. Stephen Sorenson (Dana Andrews) goes forward with a risky plan to harness energy from the earth's core, his hubris triggers a split in the planet's crust -- one that threatens to tear the world wide open! It's a premise so silly that it could be remade any day now! Indeed, this movie is wonderful proof that cheeseball science-disaster movies were pretty well figured out a good while ago. The story keeps a steady pace of drama, science and explosions. It's recommended for fans of disaster movies, or anyone who needs to prove to a young person that exciting old movies do exist. Must-see: Indian Cultural Center Kern River Courier

One of the crown jewels in the Kern River Valley is the Nuui Cunni Native American Cultural Center. (“Nuui Cunni” is a Native American phrase that means “our house.”) The center is located on a point of land projecting into the French Gulch portion of Isabella Lake, near the boat permit station. The specially-designed building is 3,150 square feet and houses a vistors center/museum, library and gift shop. The 5.6-acre grounds feature native plant exhibits, artifacts, a dance arbor, tule hut, lamada, sweat lodge and prayer garden. The views from the grounds of Isabella Lake are outstanding. Craft classes are held Wednesdays for members of the Native American community to learn Native American crafts and share their talents, time, and friendships. The center was the creation of the U.S. Forest Service to bring attention to locals and visitors of the existence, past and present, of the native people that inhabited this valley and surrounding areas through many generations. Planning for the center started in 1992, with construction starting in 1995 with the help of many volunteers. The Kern River Paiute Council was established to complete the construction of the center. Help was offered by other organizations and individuals, including the Bishop Paiute Tribe and the Tule River Tribe. The attractive center opened to great fanfare in 2002. It is free to visit. The Kern River Paiute Council strives to educate and promote the history, culture and ways of life of sometimes forgotten Native American people, by encouraging participation in the center’s programs and classes offered by a staff of dedicated volunteers. The Nuui Cunni Center can be reached at their mailing address, P O Box 3984, Wofford Heights CA 93285, or e-mail at NuuiCunni@earthlink.net. The phone number is 760-549-0800. They maintain a website at http://www.nuuicunni.com/. The center’s hours are Tuesday - Saturday from May 1 to Nov. 1 9am to 4pm, and from Nov. 1 to May 1 9am - 3pm. The center also hosts a Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Health Insurance Matters

To Your Good Health

Avoiding Medicare Rx confusion

Macular problems detailed

One of the most difficult concepts to understand for many people on Medicare is how the prescription plan works. Medicare Part D comes in two basic forms, a “standalone'”plan or the prescription benefit is built into a Medicare Harry Thal Advantage plan, such as a Medicare HMO or the Freedom Blue PPO plan. If there is a deductible, by federal law, in 2011 it may not exceed $310. Once the $310 (or less) has been satisfied, you pay the co-payment when you refill a prescription at the pharmacy. This is called the Initial Coverage. Some plans use a fixed dollar co-pay while others a percentage of the cost of the medicine. Whenever you spend money at the pharmacy, be it your money or the insurance company's, it is tallied. Once you have consumed $2,840 worth of medication, you enter the third stage of coverage, the donut hole (aka coverage gap). While in this stage, you will pay 50% of the cost of brand name drugs and 93% of the cost of generics. The last stage of coverage is referred to as the catastrophic stage. Once you have spent $4,550 out of pocket, the co-pay at the pharmacy

More than just your rural Community Hospital Rural Health Clinic • Family Practice • Pediatrics • Women's’ Health • Internal Medicine • Surgical Services • Podiatry 4300 Birch Ave. Mt. Mesa 760-379-1791

will be minimal, normally 5% of the cost of the drug or less. There are a few tricks to help reduce costs. There is a government program called "Extra Help" for people who are not quite poor enough to qualify for Medi-Cal. Sometimes, generic drugs may be cheaper at large discount stores than the prices used by the insurance plan. It is wise to see if it wouldn't be cheaper to buy the medication without insurance. If it isn't reported to the insurance company, it isn't calculated into your $2,840 and perhaps you can avoid the donut hole. (If you do fall into the donut hole, go to www.needymeds.com. There are programs where you may qualify for the brand name drugs to be free or at a very low cost to help you through the balance of the year. ) Remember, you can only change drug programs once a year, between October 15 and December 7. You are stuck with this decision for the entire next year, so make sure you determine if your medication will be covered in the coming year. What was allowed and covered in 2011 may not be available in 2012. Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker. He is President of the Kern Association of Health Underwriters and is on the National Association of Health Underwriters Medicare Advisory Board. Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Courier Syndicated Columnist

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have the dry type of macular degeneration. I take PreserVision with lutein tablets twice a day. I hear lutein is very good for my eyes, and I would like to take more than the 10 mg a day that I get in my tablets. I don't know how much is safe. My doctor said he didn't know. Will macular degeneration leave me completely blind? How long will it be before I cannot see anymore? -- C.B. ANSWER: The macula is a small, round area in the center of the retina, the layer at the back of the eye that transmits incoming images to the brain so we can see. The macula is essential for clear, central vision, the kind needed to read, to drive and to recognize faces. Off-to-the-side vision remains. You won't go completely blind. Furthermore, dry macular degeneration most often advances gradually. It's the more common variety, accounting for 90 percent of cases. It can stay at its present level for years, even for life. Wet macular degeneration comes about from the growth of blood vessels beneath the retina. Those vessels are fragile and leak fluid. It tends to advance more rapidly. Currently no cure exists for dry macular degeneration. A combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene (or vitamin A), zinc and copper

appears to slow moderate macular degeneration's progression to a more advanced stage. Your PreserVision is one such preparation. Lutein is a plant product that might aid in delaying the advance of dry macular degeneration. At this very moment, a large study is taking place to ascertain the place of lutein in the treatment of this common eye condition. The amount of lutein being tested in the study is 10 mg a day. Lutein appears to be a very safe substance, but I would stick with the 10 mg dose until the present study defines lutein's place and its optimum dose. The booklet on macular degeneration explains this prevalent eye problem in great detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue - No. 701W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Faith

Diagnosis leads to anger Clarence Semonious, pastor Prince of Peace Lutheran Fellowship, Kernville

My mother died of cancer. My wife survived a serious cancer. Along my path, with the reality of cancer, the topic of anger has come up – on both sides. Each time, the phrase “studies suggest” is used to add weight to whatever statement is made. Suppressed anger, anger Semonious beneficially applied and anger as baggage have been commonly applied to the topic of cancer. Health care studies have shown that prayers of intercession and healing have a statistically relevant impact on patients. I remember reading an article that talked of the link between prayer with faith and need. I cannot remember who wrote that. But the linking of unconnected ideas sent me to Matthew 5:21–22; Jesus linked murder and anger. Another link to consider happens in the case when an “if, then” statement is made regarding behaviors. The described behavior, if it occurs, requires a judgment and reaction as stated.

R I V E R

In anger, prayer or if/then situations Jesus spoke sternly: “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31. Psalm 19 speaks of resolve: “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” Three verses later, an example is given, “In them [the heavens] he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.” Psalm 19:4-5. Be as resolute as the sun, with joy, not as the one who confesses, “I was indecisive. Now I'm not sure.”

Our dads are our mighty oaks Jack Duitsman, pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville

And he will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither, and in whatever he does he prospers. - Ps 1:3

Duitsman

Father’s Day was last Sunday, the day we honored all our dads. The passage above compares him to a tree. If we were asked to formulate a list of trees in some order of their value or worth, we would probably be hard pressed. Whatever our particular penchant where trees are concerned, my request here is that we each create a mental picture of a tree that would come close to our favorite. In this way we can gain a sense of what is being communicated here in Psalm 1. There will be no specific mention of any particular tree in order that wherever your mental image has taken you, celebration can occur as it certainly should. Whatever the picture you hold in your mind’s eye, I would imagine that health is part of what came to mind. The thought of a straggly tree, barely clinging to life as a result of irrigation or disease issues is not the stuff that oil paintings are made of. It is

the healthy tree full of vitality that is able to inspire our souls, and in a remarkable way is able to transfer some of that vitality to the admirer. The reason I am restraining from mention of any specific family of tree is for the celebration of all the fathers in our lives. No two are the same, and yet each possesses remarkable characteristics that endear them to their children. As no tree is more perfect than another, no father is more perfect than another, yet at the same time draws admiration and love of the deepest kind from their children. My dad may be better than your dad (remember this childhood game) in my mind, and vice versa of course, but in reality, this could never be true. Remember our dads, and give thanks for the person who holds that place in our lives - whether biological or by reasons of relationship. And to every dad reading these words, may we each receive the entirety of Psalm 1 as a blessing and embrace these truths as a constant reminder and invitation to be vibrant and vital in our souls. May the "streams of water" afforded us by the Lord Himself through His Word and His indwelling enrich us deeply and cause us to grow to the men and fathers we are each ordained to be. And may we each sense the embrace of love, both from the Father of love, and also by those whose hearts embrace our own.

Purina says, "Destroy the myth: One in three Americans describe small dogs as an 'accessory.'" Now, in the next two weeks, the Kern River Valley needs to destroy another myth: That we are a small rural community with no voting clout. Earlier this year, Bodfish resident Danny Elam entered himself and his miniature red piebald Dachshund in Purina's “Big Guy, Small Dog” contest, hoping for a shot at winning the grand prize, which includes a 3-day, 2-night trip to Los Angeles for the winning guy and dog to be in a photo shoot, a year's supply of Mighty Dog® dog food and $1,000. Elam was notified a few weeks ago that he and Breezy are among the 30 finalists. But lots of votes are

needed. Go online to http://www.mightydog.com/bigguysmalldog/contestants/ and vote. Tell your friends. Tell your neighbors. Post it on FaceBook. Tell the everyone that the Kern River Valley wants its favorite weiner dog to win this particular election. Some may remember 4-year-old Breezy as the Best of Show winner of the Ladies of the Elks' Dog Show on May 21. Many others in our valley know Breezy as the little dog who rides on Elam's shoulder while he goes under houses, on rooftops, in trenches, even up ladders in the course of a work day for Atchison Propane. "I didn't enter this contest for me," Elam said. "I just wanted everyone to know how special Breezy is." Well, we here in the Kern River Valley know. Let's let everyone else know too.

Providing Seniors with Companionship, Security and Peace of Mind

Ball of string rolling along Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier Publisher

At the beginning of the year I announced the year's experiment of utmost scientific importance had begun. You see, each week after the distribution of the paper there is this big wad of Batelaan string left to throw away. My imagination got the best of me as I wondered about it all rolled into one big ball in a year's time. After two weeks the ball had grown to that of a baseball, and then the size of a softball in four weeks. So I challenged our readers to guess the ball’s height, weight, and circumference at the end of the year. And what would the best use for a giant ball of string when completed? Will it fit through the office door? In 52 weeks will I need a truck to move it around? Your guess is as good as mine. I also said there might even be an appropriate prize or prizes involved for our readers’ best guesses. Maybe even the ball of string. At this point, some 30 weeks

into the year, I estimate it will fit through the office door at the end of the year and I can tell you I won't need a truck to move it around. I'm still working on the subject of the appropriate prizes. The most puzzling part and maybe the best part is that noone has yet to submit their best guess. You still have a chance! So get those guesses rolling in. Send in or drop off your best guess in each category (height, weight, circumference and best use for a giant ball of string when completed) and contact information to: Strings Attached c/o Kern River Courier P.O. Box 1145 Wofford Heights, CA 93285-1145 or at 6392-B Wofford Blvd. during office hours Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The fine print: One entry/guess per person, per catagory. Guesses must be received by 1 p.m. closing Monday November 21, 2011. Officers, employees, associates, contractors, columnists, contributors and related family of KRV Publishing, Kern River Courier and/or related publications are not eligible. Winning guesses to be announced during January 2012. Good luck! Michael Batelaan is publisher of the Kern River Courier. He can be reached at office@kernrivercourier.com

Kern River Courier

Geronimo! This 1985 shot features Ted Hinkey soaring off a rope hanging on an old cottonwood tree on the upper Kern River. The tree was a longtime landmark that apparently has finally succumbed to damage caused by last year’s Bull Fire. It didn’t come back after the winter.

Contributed by Barbara Hinkey

Special tree is no more Barbara Hinkey Special to the Courier

A Kern River icon has succumbed to the searing flames and excessive heat of the Bull Fire that raged through Riverkern and the upper river last July. The giant cottonwood tree that has stood guard at "The Curve" (Riverkern Beach) for many years appears to be no longer able to revive itself from nature's fury and is dead. Its trunk is blackened and burned beyond repair. It stands bare with no leaves to use for leaf races; there is no cotton blowing in the wind. The gnarled roots that made a perfect place to sit and enjoy the river are beginning to decay and now cling to the eroding river bank. It was once the secret of the local people and they treasured it. Its limbs and branches have provided much-needed shade and have given generations of thrills to loyal rivergoers for many years. Babies have been baptized under that old tree. Families have gathered under its umbrella of protection for family reunions, birthday parties, graduation parties and even bachelor parties, a day of glorious sunshine or just to hang out to enjoy the beauty of the Kern River. Kids have learned to swim while their parents sat under its canopy of green. Grandmas and grandpas would sit next to it and tell

their tales of yesterday. The rope that once hung from a giant limb has been gone for years. However, those who know the tree can still hear the screams of pleasure and terror from those going swinging from the top knot of the rope and landing in the clear waters of the Kern River. Why would nature take this gentle giant that has graced the river bank since before the dam and leave the younger trees within two feet of it to survive? Is it time for a new generation? Does it not belong there anymore, because those who know it best are no longer sitting beneath it or beside it? Could it be that it is passing on its legacy to be found by new loyal rivergoers? Has it been neglected and no longer choses to be a part of The Curve? We’ll never know the answers. The death of this wonderful old tree is sad indeed, but with that sadness there might be joy. Down at the very bottom of its once mighty trunk there appears a small bit of green. Could it be a new tree? By the time the babies of today are grandmas, they might be able to sit and tell the tale of their own old cottonwood tree. (Ed. note: the author co-wrote a book about Old Kernville before the dam came in. It is available at www.riverchildren.net/

California Joe’s Storytelling Corner

How California Joe came to be California Joe Kern River Courier Columnist

My real name is Phil Sylvan Stevenson. I was raised in Alexandria, Louisiana. How I came to be known as “California Joe” California Joe is the subject of my story this week. After Bolton High School and four years at LSU, I went to New York. Later I went back to New Orleans and then back again to New York. After being an acting coach for four years there, I moved to Los Angeles. A few years later, I found Kernville. One day while subbing at Kern Valley High School I dropped a book from a shelf in the library. It turned out to be a book about an Old West buckskin hero named California Joe. It was the story of Moses Embree Milner, whose frontier reputation as an Indian fighter, scout, guide and rifle shot won him the respect of his fellow plainsmen, army officers, and indeed almost everybody with whom he came in contact. Although few of his contemporaries knew his real name, or much about him, they readily accepted “California Joe” as an equal, for he was the kind of man who inspired adulations. His life was one long adventure, and his many exploits make exciting reading.

Milner, or California Joe, is frequently come across when reading of “saber vs. tomahawk” encounters. As an Army scout, Moses was evidently in demand, for he was earning his booze money in this capacity for almost two decades, being Custer’s chief of scouts during the Washita campaign and during the Black Hills expedition of 1875. Moses was still engaged as an Army employee when his luck ran out. A gent named Tom Newcomb shot California Joe dead at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, on October 29, 1876. Although Tom had shot Moses in the back, he was never brought to trial for the crime, for at that time civilian law had yet to reach the region. I subbed at Kern Valley High and later helped start the Kern Valley Players. My wife is Sue Stevenson, who taught fourth grade at Kernville Elementary for some 20 years. I wrote a column for another local paper for four years and now I write for the Kern River Courier. We lived on Sierra Way for seven years and later moved to Plater Road and bought a cabin on the hill surrounded by trees. I garden a lot, read a lot and play classical music. I raised three kids with Miz Sue and they’re long gone raising their own families. Miz Sue and I are pretty happy campers! California Joe is the storyteller persona of Stevenson Phillips, an actor and singer living in Kernville. You may reach him at sscaljoe@aol.com.

CUSTOM CANVAS COVERS TARPS REPAIRS & SUPPLIES

Valley history: Kelso Valley Kelso Valley near Weldon is named after John W. Kelso, who hauled goods through the valley to his store in the gold miner’s camp of Keyesville in the 1850s. The route he used went from Los Angeles up through Jawbone Canyon, through the valley that eventually bore his name, through the South Fork section of the Kern River Valley, and then on west to Keyesville. A short time later a major route to another mining community went through Kelso Valley up to the thriving mining community of Claraville in the Piutes, and then down towards Havilah. Here’s how that route was discovered: An early prospector by the name of Bob Palmer had tried finding gold around Erskine Creek, but found the pickings poor so he moved on to Kelso Creek in Kelso Valley. Gold was found there, and it was getting better as he moved up Kelso Creek, so Palmer and others followed the creek up into the Piute Mountains. There on the plateau the mining town of Claraville was established, named after Clara Munckton, the daughter of a miner. Claraville lasted only a few years before the gold played out, and was largely abandoned by 1870. The once-bustling town today consists only of a few cabins and private residences, much like the nearby Havilah. The route from Kelso Valley up past the old mining ghost town of Claraville is still there, but it is a rutted dirt trail suitable only for four-wheedrive vehicles. The book “Backcountry Adventures: Southern California” describes the trail that leads up from Kelso Valley into the Piutes. The trail, which is known locally as Harris Grade, ascends into the pine forest. The road turns into a single-lane trail, which goes past Claraville and down to Hooper Hill. It is quite a long trail. Jawbone Canyon Road is also dirt and is also recommended only for four-wheel drive vehicles. The state-long Pacific Crest Trail for hikers passes through Kelso Valley. —– Kern River Courier

POWERS continued from page 1 Sierra Nevada Conservancy and has been in the works for over a decade. A few possible designs, done by an architectural firm, were shown and discussed. The possibility of other entities being part of the planned center was another topic of discussion. The design concepts presented for comment included a visitor interpretive center, wildlife gardens, paved and raised boardwalk walking trails, information kiosks, native plantings, water features and a pre-

serve overlook. The visitor's center would include a reception area, community room, meeting rooms, reception and office areas, display and exhibit space, and restrooms. Concept options regarding access to the site, traffic flow and parking were also discussed. It’s called ‘Casa de Lotsawork’ Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist

Years ago we owned a cabin in the Greenhorn mountains. We would visit it as often as we could, living at that time in Bakersfield. There was always something to do, and each weekend usually turned out to be a “workend.” It was so bad that we called it the “Casa de Middleworth Lotsawork.” When we bought the cabin, it was over 70 years old and looked every year of it. The floors were uneven, the septic tank needed attention, the water heater needed replacement and a mouse had died somewhere deep inside the kitchen stove. In addition, the wiring was unfinished and the cupboards and sink needed replacement. Over the next few years we fixed and replaced many things. A big project was the septic tank. We weren't sure exactly where it was, but we knew that a new leach line was needed. So we waterwitched the back yard and found the ancient tank. As we cleared the dirt off the top, my son fell through the rotting 2-inchthick redwood covering. He ended up with one leg through the rotted

wood and into the glop of the septic system. I helped him out and hosed him off. But that wasn't enough. My wife wouldn't let him stay in the cabin until he had taken a shower, changed all his clothes, and passed the sniff test. Yet another project was removing a 100-foot-tall dead pine tree near the cabin. Over the years it had taken a dangerous lean towards our roof , so I hired someone to cut it down. He said it was a piece of cake and asked me where did I want the tree to fall. I told him I didn't care as long as it wasn't on my roof. He took me at my word. He missed the cabin but leveled the outhouse. Fortunately no one was using it at the time. (It needed to be torn down anyway. ) I remember another time when my son-in-law helped me move a refrigerator from our truck, up the stairs (16 of them) and onto the porch ... through five feet of snow. Halfway up we slipped and dropped the refrigerator with us under it. I remember tunneling our way out from under, but am still foggy on how we got it into the kitchen. Now someone else owns the old cabin, but I've noticed that it's still called “Casa de Lotsawork.” I'll bet it still is! Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.
