Things I have noticed...

I can’t help but comment

The old woman and her shoe

Time to shell out

Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist Recently I was looking through a book of nursery rhymes and was planning to read them to our greatgrandchildren. It was then that I noticed a few things that struck me wrong. So I Middleworth sat down and looked over the oldest rhyme which was written in 1764. It was one I’ve heard all my life but never thought about it before. It goes like this: There was an old Woman who lived in a Shoe She had so many Children she did’t know what to do! So she gave them some broth, without any bread Then whipped them all soundly and put them to bed. Wow! Talk about mean-spirited! Obviously this was a case for Child Protective Services. I hope they have been called. Let’s break this rhyme down some more. First off, this is not the way old ladies should behave. Secondly, was she pocketing foster care money? And where did she find a shoe big enough to live in. Especially one full of kids. Perhaps the shoe belongs to the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk. And if so, he is going to be looking for his

lost shoe. The old bat better look out. Next I looked into the food she serves. Broth? How much nutrition is there if there is no bread to sop it up? There is also a question here, did she get the food from food stamps and did the kids get everything they were entitled to? Probably not. So these kids get some watered down broth, no bread and to make things worse, she whips them all and sends them to bed. That should wake up the local police and get them over to the shoe. Posthaste. Think of it, If the hungry kids are jammed in a shoe, crying and hurting from the beating they have just received and not even bread to eat, I can only hope that the authorities arrest the old crone and put her in the slammer. It took 219 years, but in 2013 this old rhyme was rewritten by me so I could feel good about reading it to my great-grandchildren. There was a sweet little Lady who lived in a Shoe She had foster children and loved them all too! She said Thanks to God’s Storehouse, for sending them bread Then she kissed them all fondly As they skipped, off to bed! I know one thing. I will feel a lot better reading my great-grandchildren my version. I’m also going to check on some of the other nursery rhymes for contents.

You were a wonderful mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, and wife. Heaven shines brighter now that you are there!” (by daughter Becky and granddaughter Jennifer) Dorothy Hilderbrand was born in Olney, Illinois on June 9, 1935 to Lyle and Dorothy Larsen. She was the second of four children. She lived in Illinois until the age of 5 when her family moved to West Los Angeles. She attended Hamilton High School in Culver City and was married to Richard Trunnell at the age of 17. Dorothy was a stay-at-home mother until her children were grown. Most everywhere you drive in the area around Lake Isabella, you can’t miss campgrounds, campsites and the campers, who are camping there! As I pass these places, Schlensker my mind flashes back to the wonderful camping experiences I had as a child with my parents and family and with my own children and family more recently. But my mind also wanders into the history of God’s people as told in the Bible. The Israelites had a colossal campout! The Israelites had just been rescued and liberated from the bondage of their slavery in Egypt (Exodus 512). They saw God do some pretty awesome things! They’d seen the Red Sea parted, so they could walk through the bottom on dry ground (Ex.14). As they proceeded toward Canaan, they’d seen water flow from a rock (Ex.17). They’d seen “manna” (Hebrew for "”what is it” because that was their first reaction to its appearance) supernaturally appear on the ground each morning, and they’d been fed by miraculously provided, easily harvestable quail (Ex.16). Yet when they arrived at their destination, they balked at God’s command to go in and take the Promised Land, as 10 of the 12 spies, who’d gone in to scope out the land, report-

ed that the people there were too huge to defeat. So God’s chosen people refused to do as they were told. That constituted a denial of God’s ability to enable them to conquer the people who were occupying the land which He had promised to give to Abraham and to his descendents. So God said (loose translation) “Ok, folks, have it your way. Don’t go into the land now. Instead you will hang out in the wilderness for 40 years until you’re all dead, and then your offspring will go in and receive the inheritance I have prepared and designated for you” (Numbers 13-14). What a campout- a 40-year campout! (Nm.14:34) And all because they didn’t trust God’s providence in spite of their witnessing His almighty power and experiencing His incredible love. The Israelites’ colossal campout was not quite as pleasant as the ones we see being enjoyed in our neighborhood today or the ones we’ve experienced ourselves. Yet God still provided for all their needs during those “Wilderness Wanderings,” and continued to preserve them as His people, through whom He would eventually inject Himself into the mainstream of humanity. In spite of His people’s unfaithfulness, though, God never gave up on them. As we trust that same God, we stand in wholesome fear of His no-nonsense character, but also live securely in His providence of our physical needs and peacefully in the love He demonstrated in His sacrificing His Son, Jesus, on our behalf, which amounts to His providence of our eternal spiritual need through faith in Him.

The Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument increased the level of fire restrictions starting June 26. A very dry winter led to high fire danger much earlier than in previous years. Continued high temperatures and low moisture have prompted fire officials to increase fire restrictions. Sequoia fire officials will keep these restrictions in effect until further notice. No campfires will be allowed anywhere on the forest. Stoves and lanterns with shut-off valves that use gas, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel will be allowed only in authorized campsites if the operator possesses a valid California Campfire Permit. A list of these authorized locations is available online at www.fs.usda.gov/sequoia. The list includes most campsites, the Jennie Lakes Wilderness, the Golden Trout Wilderness, and the Dome Land Wilderness. Campfire permits and a list of areas allowing stoves on the Sequoia National Forest may also be obtained at Forest Service visitor information desks. When using a stove, remember to clear all flammable material five feet in all directions from the stove, have a shovel available, and ensure that a responsible person attends the stove at all times. Operating an internal combustion engine outside properly designated roads or trails, welding and using explosives will all be strictly prohibited. If riding a motorized vehicle on trails, ensure your engine is operating properly and has an approved spark arrester. Smoking will only be allowed in vehicles and within authorized recreation sites. Anyone causing a wildfire could be liable for all costs to suppress the fire. Visitors to Forest Service and adjacent BLM and Park Service lands need to carefully follow each agency’s current fire restrictions. If you spot a fire, call 911.

Bodfish Bob’s Scotch Egg 8 eggs 17½ oz pork sausage meat 1 tsp dried sage ½ tsp dried thyme pinch cayenne pepper ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper 4 T plain flour 4½ oz fresh white bread crumbs vegetable oil for deep frying Bring a large pan of water to a boil and cook six of the eggs for 4-5 minutes until they are medium- to hard-boiled. Drain and run under cold water until cooled (this will prevent the yolks from discolouring). Peel and set aside. Beat the remaining two eggs together in a bowl and set aside. In a bowl, mix together the sausage meat, sage, thyme, cayenne pepper and pepper until well combined. Divide the sausage mixture evenly into six portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten out to form a thin patty. Wrap each patty around the peeled boiled eggs, smoothing

out the joint and making sure there is no egg left exposed. Roll the scotch eggs in the flour, then dip in the beaten egg and roll in the fresh breadcrumbs. Dip the coated eggs once more in the egg, then again in the breadcrumbs. Half-fill a deep, heavy-based pan with the vegetable oil and heat to 340 degrees, checking the temperature with a digital thermometer. Fry the scotch eggs in small batches for 4-5 minutes, turning the eggs occasionally, or until golden-brown all over and cooked through. Remove from the oil with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Serve the scotch eggs immediately, sliced in half to reveal the soft yolk. Bodfish Bob’s How to Poach an Egg Pour water into a large skillet to a depth of about two inches. Bring to a boil. Break an egg into a cup. Carefully slide the egg from the cup into the boiling water. Add as many as six eggs to the water. Immediately reduce the heat so the water barely moves. Cook for about 4 minutes, or until the yolks are still runny but the whites are firm. To test, lift an egg out of the water with a slotted spoon and gently press the thickest part of the white with a finger. If it feels firm to the touch, it’s done. Drain lightly, season and serve. Health Insurance Matters

Low-cost prescription drugs Harry P. Thal Kern River Courier Columnist Remember Chubby Checker? His picture is on the cover of a brochure published by the Social Security Administration offering information about a proThal gram that can lower the cost of medications for millions of people on Medicare. Sad thing is, many people are eligible for this program and don’t even know it. Hopefully, readers in the Kern River Valley will pass this information on to their family members who may qualify for this benefit which has no strings attached to it. Medicare Part D is the prescription drug benefit. This benefit is available on a “stand alone basis” and works for people who are receiving Medi-Cal, for people who are on Medicare alone without supplemental insurance or for people on most Medicare Advantage plans, like an HMO. If you have coverage for prescription drugs through Medicare, you are eligible for the program if you meet the program’s eligibility criteria. To qualify for this program, called “Extra Help,” you must be a legal resident in Washington, D.C. or one of the 50 states. As an individual, your financial resources must be lim-

ited to $13,300 or if married, $26,580. There are some exceptions. If you are supporting other family members, the resource allowance may be greater and you are urged to apply. Resources are defined as bank accounts, stocks and bonds, etc. They do not count things like homes, cars and life insurance policies. Your income is also considered, and it must be limited to $17,235 for an individual or $23,265 for a married couple living together. Higher earnings are allowed if you support other family members living with you or you have earnings from work. To apply for “Extra Help” you may go online to www.socialsecurity. gov/extrahelp. No computer? Call Social Security and apply over the phone or request a paper application [SSA-1020] to 1-800-772-1213. You can also apply in person at your local Social Security office. There is talk on Capitol Hill to cut Medicare benefits which will cost every Medicare beneficiary more money. Your insurance won’t be allowed to cover these costs. See the video: http://player.vimeo.com/video/ 67103062?byline=0width=640height= 360. If you are not dead, you will someday be on Medicare. Will Medicare be there for you? Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker in California (0621106) and other states. Harry is on the National Assoc. of Health Underwriters Medicare Advisory Board. He may be reached at 760-376-2100, e-mail harrythal@aol.com or visit him on the web at harrythal.com.
