No contest for weeks activities Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier This week brings plenty of activities to do in the Kern River Valley. On Saturday, bring fido on down to the Ladies of the Elks Dog Show. Come and enter your dog in one of the many categories, or just come and have a bite to eat and watch the fun. If volunteerism is what your looking for you can participate in the Upper Kern River Clean Up on Saturday. Wednesday, you can wet your pants on one of two trips at the annual Whitewater Wednesday. If you prefer dry land on Wednesday plan to attend the informative Ray of Hope luncheon in Wofford Heights. See the Calendar for information.
Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier As of June 5, the George Fire at Freeman Creek Giant Sequoia Grove, Giant Sequoia National Monument, Sequoia National Forest has burned 1,800 acres and was 35% contained. No structures have been destroyed. The fire started on June 1. Most of the fire activity is occurring in rugged terrain within the Golden Trout Wilderness Area, fire crews are hiking and being flown into the fire by helicopter. Several road, campgrond and trail closures are in effect. Contact the Forest service before traveling to the area.
Mick Gleason, retired commander of China Lake, was the top vote getter in the much watched and hotly contested First District Supervisor race, much to the disappointment of Kern Valley political watchers, who had hoped that the Kern River Valley would be represented at the Board of Supervisors. There was some consolation, because the second spot went to Roy Ashburn, former First District Supervisor, former State Assemblyman and former State Senator, who campaigned that he is a friend of the Kern River Valley because of his previous First District service. Kern Valley residents Daures Stephens, retired Senior Deputy Sheriff and Dave Freeland,
Is your favorite canine companion the cutest in the Valley? Or is it the furriest? Does it have the longest ears, or maybe the shortest tail? The Kern River Valley Ladies of the Elks are hosting their 5th annual Dog Show at the Elks’ Picnic Area behind the Elks’ Lodge, 6708 Wofford Blvd., in Wofford Heights, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 9. The public (and pooches) are welcome. Registration begins at 10 a.m. inside the gate. There is a $5 entry fee. Proceeds from this show support the Kern River Valley Elks’ people

Raffle prizes and a silent auction add to the fun and excitement. Feel free to bribe the judges at any time before or during the show. Multiple bribes are welcome. (Bribing after the show is pointless, but still Pam Stewart/Kern River Courier allowed.) Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist If there ever was a reason for me to admit that I’m entering the twilight years of my life, it’s when I start to look for things I’ve misplaced. Sometimes the Middleworth loss is within an hour of the time I put it (whatever “it” is) down, (where ever “down” is). My worst offense is my glasses. Because of recent cataract surgery, I no longer need glasses for distance. But I do need them for reading. While waiting for surgery on the other eye, I bought some of those eye glasses available on a rack in Rite-Aid. Because I only wear them for reading, I am constantly taking them off and laying them somewhere. “Somewhere” is the key word, and when I go to find the glasses, I have no recollection of where I left them. It could be the garage, the car, the workshop, the house or the tool shed. Yesterday I spent almost an hour trying to find the darn glasses and finally I gave up. I told my wife that I was desperate and asked if she could help me find them. She looked at me and said, “What are those things tucked into your shirt?” Yep, there they were. After 58
years of marriage, I should have gone to her first, but I still have my pride. Tools are another item that I’m constantly losing. For instance, my favorite tool store is Harbor Freight. A few weeks ago I was wandering down an aisle there and saw an angle drill on sale. I always wanted one and so I bought it. When I got home and looked for a place to store it, I opened a tool cabinet and found a place to keep the drill -- right next to an exact duplicate I bought several months ago, never used and forgot I had. Fortunately, Harbor Freight has an easy return policy. Losing the car keys, or any key for that matter, has become a game between me, the keys and my wife. I don’t look for them until the last minute and then I go stomping around the house looking any place I might have been the last time I used the keys. Generally they’re found by my wife who looks for them in places I have already looked and couldn’t see. And so it goes. I remember things from 30 years ago with clarity, but can’t remember what I had for dinner last night. So as I enter my twilight years I’m looking for that magic flashlight, the one that’s strong enough to help me find things I’ve lost. ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) Recently obtained information could open a new opportunity for a change. But temper your impatience and act on it only when all the facts are made available. TAURUS (Apr. 20 to May 20) You’re moving into a more active cycle. So put your ideas back on the table, where they’ll be given the attention they deserve. Expect a favorable change in your love life. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A friend might ask for a favor that you feel would compromise your values. Confront him or her and explain why you must say no. A true friend will understand. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A relationship continues to develop along positive lines. Meanwhile, a brewing job situation could create complications for one of your pet projects. Look into it right away. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Your interest in a coworker’s project could lead to a profitable experience for you both. But before you agree to anything, be sure to get all your I’s dotted and T’s crossed. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Be careful whose counsel you take about a possible long-distance move. Some advice might not necessarily be in
your best interest. Stay focused on your goals. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Someone might try to complicate efforts in an attempt to work out that confusing job situation. But don’t let that keep you from sticking with your decision to push for a resolution. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) A disagreement on how to handle a family problem could create more trouble for all concerned. Look for ways to cool things down before they boil over. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) An unexpected change in long-standing workplace procedure and policy could provide a new career target for the Archer to aim at. Start making inquires. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) You’re finally able to get back into the swing of things, as those temporary doldrums lift. Expect some surprising disclosures from a new colleague. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Rely on your sense of justice to see you through a dilemma involving a family member. Other relatives who’ve stood back will come forward as well. PISCES (Feb. 19 to Mar. 20) A new friend seems to be pushing you into taking risks — financial or otherwise. Best advice: Don’t do it. She or he might have a hidden agenda that hasn’t surfaced yet. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Big Miracle” (PG) — This based-on-a-true-story family flick tells the tale of three trapped whales and the people who come together to save them. A likable young TV reporter in small-town Alaska (John Krasinksi) finds out about a family of whales stuck under the ice, cut off from the ocean. What starts as a local news piece becomes a story watched by the whole nation as an activist (Drew Barrymore) and many others (it’s a big cast) get involved. Krasinski brings his “Jim” from “The Office” charm, and helps keep the movie light. It is, after all, a movie set in the real world — where saving the whales requires help from such cynical sources as politicians and oil executives. The balance between reality and feel-good is impressive, and successfully delivers the warm, fuzzy feeling. “Wanderlust” (R) — Linda (Jennifer Anniston) and George (Paul Rudd) are a Manhattan couple frayed and overpressured by the big city life. When George loses his job, the couple decide to pack it in and start over somewhere else. On their way to Atlanta, they stumble upon Elysium, a sort of hippie commune full of friendly weirdos who
invite the couple to stay. The bottom line is this: David Wain writes, directs and edits funny things. He has many funny friends whom he casts in his movies, Paul Rudd, and they usuJennifer Aniston ally give great in “Wanderlust” performances. His works usually fall in with the absurd, subversive and cultish, but this film is aimed at a slightly broader audience. “Wanderlust” (which he directed and co-wrote) isn’t his finest work, but it certainly produces laughs. “Jeff Who Lives at Home” (R) — Jeff (Jason Segal) is 30, lives in his mother’s basement and doesn’t have much besides a firm belief in destiny. His older brother, Pat (Ed Helms), has a wife (Judy Greer), a job and an unimpressive place to live. While running an errand for their mother, Jeff gets caught up in Pat’s neurotic plot to catch his wife cheating. An awkward, funny, authentic story comes together over the rest of that day. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Courier Antler, Fin & Feather Report
Fishing this year a shore bet Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier Columnist If follow this column, you will remember that I said it was going to be great year for shore fishing and so far it has been. Obviously I can't cover the whole lake but the North Fork of Isabella has been Mencarini very good to us who fish there. In just the past week there have been at least two bass caught and released over nine pounds. My good friend Jack Bonham shows off his 9+ pound bass and my friend Brad Knowles and yours truly also caught a 9+ pound bass (see next week's Courier for a fun big bass Bonham fish story). All of us have caught multiple smaller bass using everything from minnows for crappie,
to spinner baits to plastic worms. One thing I have noticed this year is the crappie are much bigger on average than in the previous two years although I don't catch as many. I can live with that outcome. Here is another thing that has come to my attention and that is when the crappie are biting they tend not to be finicky. The catfish bite is slow to ok. It should get much better as the temp rises. Here is a tip for catching catfish: a little surface chop is better than a flat lake. If you have not been on or near the lake lately I will tell you that the lake level is going down at a pretty fast rate and we are quickly heading for Is-apuddle Lake. For you creek fisherman the creeks in Lloyd Meadow are not available at this time due to a road closure because of fire. Bone Creek, Nobione creek, Dry Meadow, Lower Peppermint, and Freeman Creek are those affected. Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and a avid fisherman. For questions or comments you can reach him through the Kern River Courier, office@kern rivercourier.com.

Everlasting God Jack Duitsman, Pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one Duitsman can fathom.” Isaiah 40:28 It is our personal experience where the unfolding of our own history unknown to many or even any is a topsy-turvy ride that rarely settles down long enough for us to catch a breath. And such is the nature of life’s events that seemingly are beyond our reach to affect, for in being alive, we join the living family of humanity that is continually making turbulent history even as we read these words together. Into such a din of circumstance speaks the clarion voice of the Father through passages like Isaiah 40. As is our cry today, so also has been the query of each generation as to where God and His power fits into the picture that is more often than not skewed by the uproarious nature of what is going on in and around us. The above verse is in answer to a question posed in verse 27: “Why do you say, O Jacob, and assert O Israel, ‘My way is hidden
from the Lord and the justice due me escapes the notice of my God?’” This chapter (really worth another read) is filled with a litany of the overarching capacities and power of God, yet as it affected the ongoing plight of His people. No offense intended God, but with all that power at your disposal, might we wonder why You don’t make use of that ability more often in bringing about breakthrough and deliverance for your people? The forbearance of our Heavenly Father in dealing graciously with us is a gift we have difficulty fathoming, and in speaking both tenderly and truthfully, the Father brings assurance to our hearts. What He knows we have great difficulty seeing does not deter Him from working a greater purpose in us than we would ever give place to. How phenomenal that we are loved by the Everlasting God, who in the greatness of His being has declared Himself to be Emmanuel, the God who is with us. May our hearts be strengthened for the journey by the concluding words of this chapter: “He gives strength to the weary, and to him who lacks might He increases power. Though youth grow weary and tired, and vigorous young men stumble badly, yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.” (vv29-31) Blessings in Jesus fellow wayfarers, keep looking up.

Though youth grow weary and tired, and vigorous young men stumble badly, yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.” (vv29-31) Blessings in Jesus fellow wayfarers, keep looking up.

involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on the notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgages, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 661-945-5525 using the file number 12-2202. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet web site. The best way to verify the postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Talking About Real Estate
Continued from page 2
Internet done right Matt Freeman
Kern River Courier Columnist All of us have heard the statistics time and time again. “The internet is the key to selling your house.” “87 percent of all real estate sales originate on the internet.” “Most people who look on the internet for homes find their agent on the internet as well.” The list goes on and on concerning how important the internet is when it comes to buying or selling a house. And it is true, all of the statistics are true and most people do originate their search for property online. So here is the catch if you are trying to buy or sell a home. Is the agent you are using maximizing the internet? Most real estate agents have some kind of internet presence, be it an email account or even a website. Very few really know what they are doing. Just having a web site that has a list of homes for sale does not mean that you are using the internet as the huge sales tool that it is. Here is the key with the internet: does the website have what
KernRiver RiverCourier CourierPage Page119 Kern
people are looking for? Simple as that, if a realtor has an internet site that does not quickly solve the buyer’s immediate wants and needs in terms of what they are looking Freeman for on the net that website is useless. If that website cannot be found in the three main search engines in this country which are Google, Yahoo and MSN, that website is useless. So when hiring an agent, make sure they are not just on the net, make sure they are really maximizing the internet. The good ones do, because they know it helps them earn a living and most of all it helps you, the client, get what you need and that is the most important thing.
