Just like the wildflowers that are beginning to appear here and there on the green hillsides in and around the valley, activities for the weekends coming up are blossoming.

This weekend is no exception. It’s our first weekend of the spring (spring starts officially on Sunday), and there are multiple events to attend.

This Saturday and Sunday, March 1920, is the first weekend of the big “Living Green In The Kern River Valley Festival” (see our separate story. Also, an 8-page full schedule insert produced by Living Green is included in this issue of the Courier.)

But wait, there’s more. The Keyesville Classic Mountain Bike Race will be happening in the Keyesville Recreation Area from Friday through Monday. In addition, Saturday night is Casino Night, sponsored by the Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce, with Vegasstyle fun. Also on Saturday (Friday, too) is a young people’s musical being put on at Wallace School.

Sunday will bring a concert from the Kern Valley Community Orchestra.

Add to this all the normal weekly happenings, such as the Farmers Markets (see the Regular Activities section of the Courier Calendar), and you have the makings of a weekend filled with fun and excitement.

Dance music can be heard every Wednesday at the Senior Center in Lake Isabella when a Senior Dance is held. The dance takes place from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Airport has new operator Mike Ludiker Kern River Courier

Raven Aviation Industries, LLC, assumed management duties at Kern Valley Airport as of March 1. That includes all the hangars, tie-downs, the picnic/BBQ area, fly-in campground, and the very popular Airport Café.

Located three miles south of Kernville on Sierra Way, Kern Valley Airport is one of seven Kern County public-use, general aviation airports. The 3,500-foot runway, ramps and service and support buildings sit on 270 acres of Forest Service owned land, leased to Kern County.

Who would have thought that the tiny town of Wofford Heights would have an important new film before any of the rest of Southern California gets to see it?

Well, it’s true. On Saturday, March 26, the U.S. Forest Service and Kern River Valley Revitalization will host two free screenings of the new film “Green Fire” at the Reel Cinema in Wofford Heights.

The screenings will be part of the third annual Living Green In The KRV Festival.

“Green Fire” is a 72-minute high-definition documentary film about conservationist Aldo Leopold (1887–1948). The film explores the many ways his ideas about the land continue to be applied all over the world today.

The Southern California premiere will show at 10 a.m. and again at 3 p.m. at the Reel Cinema.

“Green Fire” (subtitled “Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time”) is a production of the Aldo Leopold Foundation, the U.S. Forest Service and the Center for Humans and Nature (a Chicago-based

bioethics institute).

The film shares highlights from Leopold’s life and career, explaining how he shaped conservation in the twentieth century and still inspires people today.

Although probably best known as the author of the conservation classic “A Sand County Almanac,” Leopold is also renowned for his work as an educator, philosopher, forester, ecologist, and wilderness advocate.

The film is being shown in community screening venues like this one throughout 2011. It will then be released on public television in early 2012.

The busy rural airport is primarily used for local business, recreational activities, public safety and fire base purposes, and is second in the county only to Bakersfield's Meadows Field in daily flight operations.

Nelson Aviation, owned by Gene and Jeltje Nelson, had managed and improved the public airport for over 31 years. When Gene passed away on April 4, 2010, Jeltje took on management duties while watching for someone capable of taking their vision and achievements to the next level.

‘Living Green’ arrives The big Living Green In The KRV Festival debuted earlier this week, and continues this weekend with attractions around the valley. The festival goes for another week after that and ends Sunday, March 27.

Living Green is living in such a way that we use as few resources as we can, throw away fewer things, and contribute less in the way of greenhouse gases. Some who live green go as far as growing their own food and riding bikes everywhere. Even if you don’t choose such a radical lifestyle, there are many ways in which you can go a little green. If many people do that, we can slow down the plundering of our planet by quite a bit.

Take part by attending one of the many Living Green events. There are four on Friday, eight on Saturday and three on Sunday. See the program insert from Living Green in this week’s issue.

Well, here is a primer on that very subject.

If you love the great outdoors and a slower place where you can relax, enjoy a small-town atmosphere and just breathe easy, this is the place for you. But if you’re looking for excitement, and if you start exploring, you will find a number of the great things we have to offer.

If you haven’t noticed yet, the valley is a mecca for water lovers. Fishing is a given. Where can you get a fishing license? At just about every convenience store, marina and even some of the supermarkets.

Boating licenses? Same thing. River

rafting? Best to go with a professional service, in season. There are many in the valley.

Want a destination to go to? Here are some great ones – Kern Valley Museum in Kernville, Silver City Ghost Town in Bodfish, nice parks such as Riverside and Circle Park in Kernville, Wofford Heights Park and Lake Isabella Park, Reel Cinema in Wofford Heights, the delightful Old Onyx Store (built in 1861), the Nuui Cunni Indian Cultural Center at French Gulch, and the big sequoias at the Trail of 100 Giants (summer only). Or just take your camera and photograph the old buildings or the fabulous scenery.

If you’re looking for a realistic nature park in a controlled environment, what we have is better – real nature. It doesn’t get any realer than that.

Bodfish Bob's Bacon Cheddar Chicken Patties 4 boneless skinless chicken breast halves 8 strips bacon 1 small red onion, sliced 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Place 1 chicken breast half between 2 pieces of plastic wrap or waxed paper. Working from center, gently pound chicken with flat side of meat mallet or rolling pin until about 1/4-inch thick; remove wrap. Repeat with remaining chicken breast halves. In large skillet over medium heat, cook bacon until crisp. Remove bacon from skillet; drain on paper towels. Reserve 1 tablespoon drippings in skillet. Add onion to drippings; cook and stir 2 to 4 minutes or until tender. Remove onion from skillet. Add chicken to skillet; cook 6 to 8 minutes on each side or until chicken is fork-tender and juices run clear.

Visitors contribute $1.24 billion per year to the Kern County economy.

Persons wishing to contribute their own sightings may contact the Board of Trade during regular business hours (M-F, 8am-5pm) at 661868-KERN (5376) or 800-500-KERN with the location and common name of the blooms. Sightings may also be submitted by e-mail at Wildflowers@VisitKern.com.

With the anticipation of colorful wildflower growth comes the annual launch of the Kern County Board of Trade's Wildflower Hotline.

The hotline, a telephone number and web site offering updates on wildflower growth and locations, began operation this week and will continue throughout the season.

Wildflower information is available around-the-clock for callers to 661322-WILD (9453) or Internet users visiting the Board of Trade's tourism web site at www.VisitKern.com.

The online version also includes the return of the Kern Wildflower Blog, which will allow nature enthusiasts to post information on the best places to see wildflowers and to share experiences with other wildflower devotees.

‘Iron Horse’ opened the West California Joe Kern River Courier Columnist

We drove down the canyon to Bakersfield, got on the Amtrak and went quickly off to Oakland where we were met at the train station in the rain by Joan Robinson, who transported us to Alameda California Joe Island. The next day we would participate at Grant Robinson’s memorial service.

What we never realized at the time was that the train we took from Bakersfield to Oakland was special. It all led to the driving of a gold spike on May 10, 1869 at Promontory, Utah which meant the building of the first transcontinental railroad was a done deal.

So now you could get on a train in New York City and get off in San Francisco. That was as great as Christopher Columbus’s achievement in 1492, and Neil Armstrong’s in 1969. This joining of the rails was the final shove in the opening of the frontier, and perhaps is the most significant accomplishment of the Old West.

The man who started it all was a 27-year-old Connecticut railroad surveyor named

Theodore Dehone Judah (182663). As soon as he got off the boat after sailing around South America to get to California, Judah was obsessed with being able to go home some day by railroad. He talked to everyone who would listen about his idea and was treated like true visionaries are usually treated ... they called him “Crazy Judah!”

But he found a pharmacist named Daniel “Doc” Strong who liked what Judah had to say and partnered with him to establish a Pacific railroad association that would build eastward from California, using Judah’s route across the Sierra Nevada.

From the East,the federallychartered Union Pacific would begin at Omaha and build toward the setting sun. In between they would cover over 1,700 miles over deserts, plains, and 8,000-foot-high mountains.

Hardware partners Collis P. Huntington and Mark Hopkins, grocer Leland Stanford, and dry goods entrepreneur Charles Croker were others who backed his plan, all remembered today as true visionaries.

Things I Have Noticed...

Oozing through zoo Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist

A few months back my wife and I went to see our son in Tennessee. We had a great time, visited, and did some sight-seeing. Our son always manages to see that our time there is full of fun things to do and see. Our main attraction on this trip was Middleworth a visit to the Nashville Zoo. Mind you, this is not just any run-of-the-mill animal enclosure. This is a first-class, pullout-all-the-stops, animals running everywhere, zoo! As you follow a jungle path there is a host of kiosks that border different animal habitats. Each kiosk is complete with backlit signage and recordings that explain all about the animals we could see and almost touch. We will remember this trip not only for what was there and the animals we visited, but the deluge of rain that fell on us midway through our safari.

We had just arrived at the alligator refuge that allows visitors to stand behind a glass wall that shows the alligators up close and ugly, when suddenly the heavens opened and for the next hour the rain didn't stop. We got wet ... immediately. Really wet! So wet that we decided we couldn't get much wetter, and opted to continue slogging through the rest of the tour,

splashing from kiosk to kiosk. It was a warm tropical rain, that soaked us thoroughly, as our path became a creek, and then a mini Missippi.

We eventually found a small souvenir store and bought each of us a rain hat and their last umbrella. From that point on, we three crowded under that one umbrella. Which didn't work very well. (Three people under one umbrella, walking in a downpour, means that someone or two is going to be under the water runoff.) My camera was enclosed in a ziplock bag and of course all our pictures look like they were taken under water. (Which they were!)

As we passed by and observed the wildlife, we noticed them observing us as they stood dry under their shelters. You could almost know that they were thinking how dumb humans are, walking in the rain with goofy hats and one umbrella.

For the next hour we continued our trek, drip/sopping our way up the jungle path. Later as we finished our trek and were wading out of the zoo, the rain stopped. (Talk about timing!)

But ... as we squished our way to the car we agreed it had been fun, worth braving the monsoon, and a chance for the dry zoo animals to watch the crazy wet humans watching them.

Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.
