Isabella Fishing Derby Special to the Courier
According to Forest Service officials there will be plenty of room for campers and anglers looking for overnight accommodations. Pioneer Point, Paradise Cove, Hungry Gulch and Boulder Gulch campgrounds are on first-come, firstserved basis at $20 per night. Camp 9 also has plenty of sites available at $17 per night. In addition, over night camping is allowed at Auxiliary Dam, Old Isabella Road and the South Fork Recreation Area, with a daily fee of $10 (or $50 for an annual pass). Stine Cove and Hanning Flat are also available for camping and are free of charge. For the Fishing Derby weekend only, the Forest Service has opened up additional areas for overnight camping. These areas include Engineer Point beach areas west of the Auxillary Dam, Kissack Cove; Boulder Gulch and the shoreline between French Gulch Group Area and Boulder Gulch. For these areas, visitors can begin to set up campsites on Thursday, at 6 a.m. If visitors set up their campsites earlier they may be cited. The special camping areas will remain open until Monday, April 2 at 6 p.m. Tillie Creek, Tillie Creek Group, Live Oak North, and Live Oak South will remain closed during the derby due to water system repairs in progress. As a reminder, camping is limited to 14 days out of a 30 day period. Visitors can set up their recreation vehicles in developed campsites prior to the weekend event. However, visitors must occupy the site and may not leave a vehicle or trailer unoccupied for more than 24 hours.
If you want to claim a prize in the Derby, you must be registered. The Derby officially begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday March 31, and officially ends at 6 p.m. on Monday April 2. All participants must register by with the Fishing Derby headquarters prior to participating and registration closes at 7 a.m. on Saturday March 31. You must pick up your registration card at Derby Headquarters prior to fishing and have it with you to claim your prize. All Derby participants age 16 or older must have a valid California Sport Fishing license in their possession. Children under the age of 16 are not required by California to have a license. All fish must be caught under the guidelines of the current California Sport Fishing Regulations and only amateurs may participate. Tagged fish must be turned in to Derby Headquarters by 6 p.m. on Monday April 2. Night time trout fishing is not allowed at Isabella Lake at any time. No tagged fish will be received prior to 8 a.m. Saturday March 31. Do not remove the tag from the fish prior to verification. If the registered participant catches the Kern River Valley Chamber's sponsored $20,000 tagged trout while wearing the official 2012 Isabella Lake Fishing Derby tee-shirt or hoodie, the prize becomes $40,000. Any winner of the $20,000 tagged trout or any of the $10,000 tagged trout during the Derby must agree to take (regardless of issues) and pass in a conclusive manner, a polygraph examination. The examination must occur within 30 days of the end of the Derby.

The Kern River Courier/Kern Angler mistakenly did not report all of the Fishing Derby prizes. There will be 10 $1,000 trout, 10 $50 trout and the prizes for the longest trout are 1st: $1,000, 2nd: $500, 3rd: $250 and 4th: $200. The 10 major derby sponsors are: Berkley, Shakespeare, Budweiser, Central Valley RV & Sports Show, Automobile Club of Southern California, Renewable Resources Group, Sierra Gateway Markets, California Land Management, Mountain Mesa and Isabella Supermarkets, French Gulch and North Fork Marinas. There are 58 sponsored $100 trout and seven other sponsored trout worth $200 to $500. These trout are sponsored by local merchants and individuals. The bass boat is a Derby and Lake Isabella Chamber of Commerce-sponsored prize and not a prize of Galey’s Marine Supply. The Courier apoligizes for any inconvenence this my have caused.

Streep good in so-so role By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Iron Lady” (PG-13) — Meryl Streep pulls a full-force Streep-a-thon in this scattershot biopic about Margaret Thatcher, England’s controversial conservative prime minister. Framed by the quasi-coherent mutterings of the elderly Thatcher in her latelife mental decline, the film shows a highlight reel of Thatcher’s life and career. This flick managed to rake in another Oscar for the veteran actress, but that about sums up the appeal. Those unfamiliar with Thatcher’s political career won’t get much enlightment from the muddled narrative. If the Academy Award brought this film to your attention, then you pretty much know everything about it you need to know: Streep is a good actress, even in a boring and obscure movie. “Miss Representation” — Teenagers spend an incredible amount of time in front of the television or computer screen, in addition to being bombarded with advertising over every inch of the real world. This documentary explores how women are portrayed through the media, and how that affects the development of young people. It’s not a singular study, but a general look at the role of women in the media, all punctuated with statistics. The film could be seen as an introduction into a broad and relevant discussion. DOGS OF THE WEEK “Animals United” — This kids’ flick stands out from the pile of
generic talking-CGanimaladventures shoveled out by Hollywood, but only because this one is from Europe. So lacking in Meryl Streep in “The imagination and storyIron Lady.” telling that it may as well be “Madagascar 6: Animals with Voices You Don’t Recognize.” The plot has something to do with a lack of water, but this isn’t “Rango.” The animals make their foray into the land of people, but this isn’t any of the myriad movies in which that happens either. It’s just a weirdly familiar, wholly forgettable film. If you’ve run out of movies to show the kids, and “Animals United” is the only one left at bat, just let them play outside — they might find an interesting stick or something. “The Darkest Hour” (PG-13) — A band of merry young folk goes to Moscow for a good time only to have their party crashed by a bunch of invisible aliens. The movie also is under attack by invisible character development and an invisible budget. Folks get turned into ash upon contact with translucent alien blobs, and any dread or excitement quickly evaporates as the movie becomes a silly, over-serious “Ghostbusters” cousin when the characters start fighting back. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

U.S. Forest Service Special to the Courier The Forest Service (FS) prides itself in not just fighting fires, but educating the public how to prevent fires from happening in the first place. Smokey Bear has taught millions of people over the years not to play with matches. Following Smokey's lead, firefighters from the Kern River Ranger District of the Sequoia National Forest have traveled the surrounding areas to educate children on all aspects of fire safety. Prevention personnel Derrick Smith, Abby Bolt, Kelli Stafford, Landon Joyner, Kyle Villa, and Shannon Solis traveled to St. Francis School in Bakersfield to ensure that local students know how to prevent and how to respond to fire. They taught 97 children over two days with the help of Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl. One week later, Solis teamed up with Andy Elliott, Brian Liske, Landon Joyner, Kyle Villa, Chris Carroll, Jesse Harris and Geri Adams and gave a hands-on fire safety message to more than 50 children at the Kernville Union School District Preschool. During this program the children were able to crawl through one of the Forest Service Fire Trucks, spray water and visit with Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl. Adults and children of all ages had the opportunity to learn more about the FS fire prevention programs and

recreation opportunities at the annual Home and Garden Show and at the Central Valley Sportsman's Boat and RV shows in Bakersfield, where the Prevention staff set up a booth and reached out to people from all over the central valley about fire safety and recreation. The teaching didn't stop there, the same group of FS employees along with Mikey Martinez, Blake Abbott, George Bowen, Raul Estrada, Matt Howard and Matt Ball headed back to Bakersfield on February 29 where they put on two more fire prevention shows for 150 kindergartners at Veterans Elementary School. District Ranger Rick Larson gave these personnel and their outreach accolades stating, "These employees are our ambassadors in the field who impart our message of fire prevention to both children and adults; I'm proud of their efforts and appreciate their work, not only in these fire educational and safety programs, but also by the countless contacts they make in the field." More programs are scheduled throughout the month of March along with Kern County Fire Department and the Bureau of Land Management. If you would like more information about upcoming events, or would like to plan an event with Smokey and/or Woodsy, please contact Shannon Solis at 760-379-5646, or by email at ssolis@fs.fed.us.

Salome’s Stars ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) Avoid having someone else take credit for the project you started by finishing it yourself. Then it will be you who will be wearing those well-deserved laurels. TAURUS (Apr. 20 to May 20) The facts about a new opportunity are still emerging. Wait until they’re all out in the open, and then use your keen business sense to help make the right decision. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might feel confused, even hurt by a friend who suddenly puts distance between you. If she or he won’t discuss it, don’t push it. An explanation should come in time. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your willingness to be part of the team opens doors that had been shut to you. Keep them open by keeping your promises even when your commitment seems to be wavering. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Congratulations. You’re really getting things done to perfection. Don’t forget to take a catnap now and again to keep those energy levels up. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Your “plain-talking” honesty is admirable. But sometimes sharp words can leave painful scars. Be careful that what you say doesn’t come back to hurt you.
LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) A stress-filled period takes a positive turn as you deal with the underlying problem. Act now to avoid a recurrence by changing some rules in your relationship. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Your rising energy levels make it easier for you to achieve some important objectives. This could lead to a big boost in how you’re perceived, both at home and on the job. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) A changing picture begins to emerge as you learn more about an offer that seemed so right but could be so wrong. Look to a trusted adviser for guidance. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Spiritual aspects are strong. Take time to reflect on the path you’re on and where you hope it will lead you. It’s also a good time to reach out to loved ones. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Febr. 18) You could be assuming far too many responsibilities, whether it’s at work or in personal matters. Be careful that you’re not weighed down by them. PISCES (Feb. 19 to Mar. 20) You’re getting closer to your goals. And since nothing succeeds like success, don’t be surprised to find new supporters alongside you. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.
