More than 700 middle school students from two dozen schools put their math skills to the test on Saturday during the 43rd annual Kern County Middle School Mathematics Field Day held at Liberty High School. Sixth, seventh, and eighth-graders, or those in an algebra class for which they will receive high school credit, competed in a series of written events testing their math talents individually and in teams of two, three, four and five by grade level. Some of the categories have playful names such as "leap frog" and "mad hatter." Still others offer the flavor of athletic competition with names such as "power relay," "circuit training," "individual medley" and "triathlon games." Math Field Day is coordinated by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools with sponsorship from California Math Council, Kern County Science Foundation and Westchester Kiwanis. It is a fun day of problem solving games and competitions. The old Onyx store, operated by Gaye Honeycut was the site of the filming of a new film that is expected to be shown at film festivals and on the internet. Drumman's Palace is a 20 to 30 minute "short" film that was in production this week at the historic Onyx Store. This film will be an "epic short" because it pushes the time limits between a short film and a feature film and uses a lengthy 35 page script.

This will be a Twilight Zone type horror film. During the filming the cast and crew stayed at the Hillside Ranch in Onyx, where film crew staff prepared the food daily for the cast and crew on the set. The producers found the Onyx Store on the Internet and came to the Kern Valley to discover the perfect site for their story. Infested Films, owned by David Sherbrook and Scott Dawson of Studio City, raised the $8,000 needed to produce this film from friends and supporters on the Internet

between Feb 11, and Mar 13, 2013. Supporters were promised a Special Thanks in the credits and a gallon of blood spilled in their honor along with a digital download of the completed film and all added special features. This is how they describe the film: "Charlie has a dream: to be like his idols, the great drummers Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. On his way home from school one day he comes upon a new store, Drumman's Palace, and is enticed by the owner, promising him the key to

all his desires in the form of a new and mystical radio. But at what cost do your dreams come? Set upon the idealistic backdrop of America in the 1950s, Drumman's Palace is a stylistic tour de force, where nightmares come to life and passion comes with a price. Follow Charlie as his dreams become reality in horrifying ways, delving him deep into a world few can comprehend and into the jaws of a creature so terrifying he may not live

Supervisor Gleason addresses drought Courier FYI First District Kern County Supervisor Mick Gleason issued the following statement relative to the impact of the current drought in the Kern River Valley. "The County of Kern is continuing to identify every possible avenues of State and Federal relief for the business communities in the KRV." He identified possible relief from the California Emergency Management Agency. Small businesses in Kern County are eligible to apply for Economic Injury Disaster Loans under an existing Small Business Declaration. Businesses seeking EIDLs face an

Honor Flight the film comes to the KRV Honor Flight is a heartwarming documentary about four living World War II veterans and a Midwest community coming together to give them the trip of a lifetime. Volunteers race against the clock to fly thousands of WWII veterans to Washington, D.C. to see the memorial constructed for them in 2004, nearly 60 years after their epic struggle. The trips are called “Honor Flights” and for the veterans, who are in their late 80s and early 90s, it’s often the first time they’ve been thanked and the last trip of their lives. The 24-hour journey is full of surprises that deeply move all who are involved. It’s uncommon for World War II veterans to talk about the War, but the Honor Flight experience brings their stories out. Don't Get Burned Dan Schlensker, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Lake Isabella Although the “Fire Danger” sign on the highway said “moderate” the other day, as we move into the Schlensker summer months the fire dangers will increase. Fire officials warn us to keep the area around our dwellings free of combustibles and to have a supply of water ready to protect the dwelling. When wildfire does break out, an important and effective fire-fighting procedure is a “back fire.” Simply start a controlled fire in front of an approaching fire to burn toward the threatening fire, so there will be no fuel for it to consume in its path, thus extinguishing it. It was common practice on the Great Plains in the earlier decades of our country to use a similar tactic in the event of a grass fire on the prairie. When a prairie fire threatened, the homesteader would start a fire at his house to burn outward so

that when the fire arrived, there’d be nothing to burn around his abode. The homesteader and his household would be out of danger, standing on a previously burned safety zone. What a wonderful analogy that is to the zone of safety in which a person, who trusts Jesus, stands. The apostle Paul uses the phrase, “in Christ”(Romans 8:1), to describe the position of a believer in Jesus. Christians, therefore, are standing in Christ. But how is that a safety zone, and from what fire does it protect those who trust in Jesus? The fire is none other than the fire of hell, and the threat is not moderate! But “in Christ” is a safety zone, because Jesus was already burned on behalf of us all. The prophet Isaiah said, “the Lord laid on him the iniquity of us all”(Isaiah 53:6). The apostle Paul reports that Jesus “was delivered over to death for our sins”(Romans 4:25). Because Jesus took the torching, which we deserved, we through faith in Him - stand in the zone of His safety from the eternally devastating punishment for sin. That’s the security and peace of mind enjoyed by all, who are “in Christ.”

A Hedge of Blessing Jack Duitsman Father’s Heart Foursquare Kernville “Therefore, behold, I will hedge up your way with thorns, And wall her in, So that she can- Duitsman not find her paths.” - Hosea 2:6 At first, the Old Testament book of Hosea can appear as little more than an odd narrative of God’s extremely curious command to one of His prophets to take a wife who had made her living through prostitution. Yet a deeper understanding of the allegorical message to the people of God (past, present and future) that mirrored the life of the prophet Hosea and Gomer, his wife, is both moving and profound. In humble obedience to the Word of the Lord, Hosea sought Gomer out, and though her faithfulness to marriage vows waxed and waned in a horrific manner, the continued directive from the Father’s heart was for Hosea to stand by the vows he had taken. In Gomer’s unfaithfulness, Hosea was to remain steadfastly faithful. Through the prophet’s personal and relational distress, the heart and message of the Father’s heart toward his people was faithfully communicated. While we would err in taking a one-message-fits-all approach to

applying the message of Hosea to all issues of marital infidelity, we can nonetheless receive this powerful message concerning the Father’s heart of love and commitment to us His children in spite of our often faithless ways. Now re-visit the above passage from Hosea’s second chapter, and catch a glimpse of what is being communicated. The picture of being walled in with a hedge of thorns would not appear to be the expression of a loving heart, but in dealing with us His children, that often is exactly what difficulties become - a loving reminder of the Lord’s faithfulness. When seen in light of the outworking of loving hands and hearts, difficult circumstances can be much like the hedge of thorns that was going to wall Gomer in and keep her from pursuits whose result would be certain destruction and death. A better approach for her - and us - would have been diligent obedience to vows made before God, yet even in her - and our - unfaithfulness, the love of the Father remained faithful. Yes, the Father’s deep desire for us is a way of blessing as a result of obedient adherence to the direction of His Holy Spirit, but we can also be thankful for His commitment to working in our lives in such a way as brings Him glory and brings us blessing, even if His working comes through pain and distress. We are loved by the Father beyond the wildest imaginations of what our hearts and minds could ever know.

CDFW Law Enforcement Courier Release California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) officers contacted more than 3,000 anglers while patrolling the local waterways in Inyo and Mono Counties during the trout season opener that started April 27. Over the opening weekend, 17 CDFW wildlife officers issued 60 citations, 43 warnings and made one arrest. On April 30, the southbound lanes of U.S. 395 were reduced to one lane and all vehicles traveling south on U.S. 395 were screened by the Department's law enforcement officers. Screening consisted of an introduction and brief questions. Violations included over-limits of

trout, fishing closed waters, fishing without a license, use of prohibited gear and bait, fishing out of season, angling in a hatchery, snagging, boating without a fire extinguisher, no life jackets, boating under the influence, excessive speed and use of multiple poles. Officers also conducted a wildlife checkpoint operation to promote safety, education and compliance with law and regulations through education, preventative patrol and enforcement. Anglers found in violation of the trout limit were returned their legal possession limit of 10 trout per person; the excess trout above the legal limit were seized. A total of 88 seized trout were donated to the California Department of Forestry conservation camp.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Beautiful Creatures” (PG-13) — This supernatural teen romance thriller is aimed squarely at the “Twilight” crowd, but manages to rise above its sibling. He takes an interest in the new girl at school, Lena (Alice Englert) -- a mysterious chick from a powerful and enigmatic family (surprise: they’re witches.) Their love is forbidden, and somehow the fate of the world gets caught up in it. “Beautiful Creatures” stands out among the pack because the young lovers have actual chemistry, not just vacant stares. The pacing is a little sluggish. The movie’s mythology keeps changing, and new arbitrary plot twists spring up like dandelions. As far as young-adult supernatural love stories go, you could do a lot worse. “The Last Stand” (R) — Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a rickety old sheriff who can still dole out masterlevel violence when the time is right. When a devious drug lord stages a spectacular escape from prison, he and his army of thugs make a run for the border. The last stop before Mexico is Somerton, Arizona -- a peaceful small town under the protection of the aging lawman. It’s up to Ah-nuld and his ragtag bunch of townsfolk to shoot them bad guys.

Arnold holds up to the ravages of time pretty well. He’s (relatively) believable as a police veteran seeking some peace. But this movie is mostly about fighting, and that’s all good here. Johnny Knoxville (of MTV's “Jackass”) plays a shifty gun nut with an arsenal -- thus supplying the firepower for the big scenes. “Stand Up Guys” (R) —Val (Al Pacino) is released from a 28-year stay in prison, and meets up with his old partners in crime, Doc (Christopher Walken) and Hirsch (Alan Arkin). These three old-timers immediately start riffing. Ignore some plot holes and get over a few pacing issues, because the veteran cast is the real draw here -- and they deliver laughs to those who are observant. Walken especially. His dead-pan is impeccable, and as a former mafia man gone soft with age, he gets some of the best lines in the movie.

Bodfish Bob’s Snap Pea & Radish Salad 3-4 oz.fresh sugar snap peas 3-4 large radishes, trimmed and sliced thin 1 T chives, minced 2 tsp kosher salt Dressing: 2 T creme fraiche or sour cream 1 tsp prepared horseradish (or to taste) 1/8 tsp grated lemon zest pinch kosher salt Several grinds fresh black pepper In a medium sauce pan, boil two quarts of water and kosher salt. Add the peas and blanch for four minutes. Skim the peas out with a slotted spoon and drop them in a ice bath. Remove peas when cooled and shake or blot them dry. If the peas are large, slice them in two on the bias. Place the peas and radishes in a medium bowl. Add half the chives. To make the dressing, whisk the sour cream, horseradish, lemon zest salt and pepper together. If too thick to pour, add water to thin it. Toss about half the dressing with the peas and radishes. Top with remaining chives over the top.

Cook radishes and onions in chicken broth and one can water with bay leaf until radishes are soft. Remove the bay leaf. Put radishes and onions in blender and puree. Return to broth. In separate pan, melt butter, add flour and cook about one minute. Slowly add milk, stirring until smooth. Add radish mixture, worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Serve hot. Bodfish Bob’s Braised Radishes 2 bunches radishes, about 1 lb., trimmed 1 1/2 cups chicken stock 2 T butter, cut into bits 1 large shallot, thinly sliced 2 T sugar 1 T red wine vinegar salt and pepper Place radishes in a skillet with stock, butter bits, shallots, sugar, vinegar, salt and pepper. Cover the pan and bring to a boil. Uncover, reduce heat to medium. Cook radishes 10 to 12 minutes and if the stock has not cooked away, remove radishes and cook down to 1/2 cup, about 2 minutes.

You weren’t really in the hospital Harry P. Thal Kern River Courier Columnist A colleague of mine recently had a client with a problem which is growing nationwide. People go to the Emergency Room, get help, and are held overnight or longer for “obserThal vation.” This observation may last for several days, and they are getting good care. All the medically necessary tests are run, the doctor comes to visit, and you have a room, either private of semi-private. Finally after several days, you are still needing some assistance, so being you are over 65 and on Medicare, you and your doctor decide you would be better off staying in a skilled nursing facility (aka nursing home) for a while longer to recover your strength. Since you are on Medicare and have a good Medicare supplement, you feel this is a good option, as this way you are not a burden on your family. After a week or so, you are more or less back to normal, and go home. A short time later, you receive a bill from the nursing home for several thousands of dollars. You call your agent, and learn that the bill should have been covered, as you were in the hospital for three or more days (not counting the day of discharge), so you complain back to

Medicare that they made a mistake. More time goes by. You then learn that your stay in the hospital was for “observation” as an “outpatient” and you were never “admitted” as an “inpatient.” Why would a person be kept in the hospital under these circumstances? Probably because an admitted patient earns the hospital a flat fee based on the diagnosis code. That flat payment covers all the expenses incurred. If a person is an outpatient, then each item and service may be billed separately, possibly being billed to the patient if it is not covered by insurance. There is currently a bill before Congress. If HR1197 and S 569 are passed into law, all the time spent in the hospital will count towards the prior hospitalization requirement for Medicare nursing home coverage. According to Federal Records, the Washington Post states that “observation patients has jumped 69 percent in the past five years to 1.6 million in 2011.” Perhaps it is time for us to let our Senators Feinstein and Boxer know our feelings, as well as Congressman McCarthy. At 16, he joined the student run television station TV 10 and became chief editor and director of their weekly news program. During his tenure there he learned all facets of the filmmaking process, from camera operating and editing to writing and directing. Sherbrook attended Columbia College Hollywood, where he completed many short films and documentaries, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in Cinema. After founding Infested Films in 2009, Sherbrook has successfully produced 4 short films and his first feature, "Closing Costs". After filming his first short, "The Morning After", produced in his next short film, "Theodore", which went on to gain a small cult following as well as being featured in the Tromadance Film Festival

After co-founding Infested Films with Sherbrook, he wrote, directed, and did all of the Special FX for the short film "Freddie And The Goblins", an experience that led him into the world of puppeteering and visual FX, which will also be of great value for some of the creatures in "Drumman's Palace". Dawson also works as a freelance artist in the practical and visual FX realms, paving the way to the massive amount of creature work in "Drumman's Palace", which will be a marriage of these techniques. The film’s producer is Shannon Kendall of Great Takes Productions of New York and Chris Brown is the director of photography. Celebrity make up artist Victoria Rowe and her associate Emma Dirks are doing the make up for the film.
