242 species seen here for Birdiest County Alison Sheehey Special to the Courier
Alison Sheehey/Special to the Kern River Courier
This one’s for the birds Kern County’s species count for America’s Birdiest Inland County may bring it into the top spot for the seventh time.
The weather was beautiful during Kern County’s effort in the America's Birdiest Inland County (ABIC) competition – unfortunately. It was great for people who want to be outdoors, but not so great for finding birds. Migrating birds will fly night and day with little rest on their way to breeding grounds. When the weather is windy or rainy, the birds are forced from their high altitude flight down to ground level. These are days that birders relish. A few days later, on May 8, at one of Kern County's most amazing migratory hotspots, (Butterbredt Spring) experienced birders estimated up to 45,000 birds flying up a single canyon within a few hours of dawn. The winds were horrible, which pushed our feathered friends down to where they could refuel at this rare desert oasis and where birders could enjoy one of nature's most amazing spectacles.
Real deal on solar plant Kern River Courier
The proposed Weldon Solar Ranch has incensed some and is the subject of a lot of talk. A team from Renewable Resources Group was here in the valley this week for public meetings and visited the Courier to dispel some rumors and clear up misinformation. Here’s what they said. • There will be no mirrors and no towers. The panels will be low, relatively unobtrusive and practically maintenance-free. • There will be very little noise. No big fans are required. • RRG owns the Onyx Ranch and has spent two years cleaning ditches and increasing water flow for
better agricultural output. They are running it as a ranch, as it has been. They do not plan to ship water out of the valley. • The Weldon site is the best of the properties they considered, including other property they own at Hanning Flat, because it is near electrical transmission lines that can handle the load (new lines would not have to be constructed). • The state of California is under aggressive renewable energy requirements, and this project and others like it will cut fossil fuel consumption. • Ari Swiller of RRG said about why the project was a surprise to locals, “It was a mistake on our part not to let (local) people know.”
Michael Batelaan/Kern River Courier
Anne Litz writes the public’s ideas on the board for a meeting of the Preserve the Kern River Valley group, which opposes the solar project planned for Weldon.
• The project is planned to be “light on the land” – meaning there will be as little
This was not the case during the ABIC, but the 66 participants helped find almost every species expected in the county – with a few unexpected bonuses! Even with beautiful weather getting in the way, it looks as though this could be the seventh consecutive year Kern County wins the ABIC competition. With 242 species currently reported to the Kern ABIC compiler, Bob Barnes, birders have made the county competitive again. For eight years birders across the country have competed for no prizes other than bragging rights to demonstrate the special places across this beautiful country. Kern County is one of North America's biological gems, a fact that many local citizens seem to be unaware of. This competition, along with the 10 Christmas Bird Counts, the six NABA Butterfly Counts, and the hordes of people who seek to experience wildflowers around the county, are proof positive that no matter what your interest in nature is, Kern County can provide a magical experience.
impact upon the land as possible. Natural vegetation will grow underneath the elevated panels, and there will be grazing underneath as well. • Once or twice a year, a water truck will spray water on the panels to clean them. The water will return to the ground from which it was pumped. • There will be a five-foot ranch-style fence surrounding the property, similar to other ranch fences, with native plants growing next to it here and there. • Valley labor will be used as much as possible to build it, and Kern County labor, with some skilled and some semi-skilled. • Audubon/Kern River Preserve has raised some concerns, but as Jim James of RRG said, “We’re going to end up with a better project because of their comments.”
Valley group wants to influence governmental regulations Meeting set for May 24 Kern River Courier
A group of local people has banded together to try to influence government decisions that they feel would negatively affect the valley. This would be accomplished by using the power of a district, in this case the Kern River Valley Cemetery District. “These days it is hard to stay on top of all the federal and state land use plans, decisions, regulations and lawsuits and how they affect the local residents and
our local economy,” said Chris Horgan of the Stewards of the Sequoia group, which is concerned about increasing regulations over public lands. “The Kern River Valley Public Cemetery District board is concerned about the negative effects of government plans, regulations and restrictions have on our economy, way of life and ability to survive as a community. In order to help protect the community’s interests they have filed a resolution to coordinate with federal and state agencies on behalf of the community,” continued Horgan. “The coordination process will not take
away any rights each of has to comment or be involved in any plans,” said Horgan. “Coordination can help ensure our community has influence over our future, and the federal and state government plans brought to our valley.” A Town Hall Meeting will be held by the newly-formed Kern River Valley Public Cemetery District Citizens Advisory Committee on May 24 at 6 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall in Kernville. The purpose of the Town Hall meeting will be for the community to hear from proponents about the coordination efforts with federal and state agencies.

Things I Have Noticed...
Some donations not great Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist
Now that I'm in my senior years I've noticed that I have time in life to look around and survey my possessions, things over the years that I have bought because I thought of them as necessary to my style of living. And things that looked good on Middleworth the store shelves, things that I knew would be a real asset to me sometime. Most of my inventory that I once was positive I needed now sit on shelves and are in closets, drawers and workshop cabinets. Many of them cobwebbed and dusty, but valuable. What brought about this nostalgia was the Sirretta Street Sale a couple of weeks ago. My wife, as Sale Chairman of her sorority, asked if I had anythng to donate. My first thought was no I don't, because everything I had, I needed or would need at sometime or another. But after some soul searching I figured I might find one or two things that I could bear to part with and which would not grievously change my standard of living. So with trepidation I ventured first into my workshop. Surely I could find something there I could part with that would not
cause me great regret later. First I looked at my tools. I have a big collection of old old tools bought at yard sales. But I couldn't donate them because they might be worth big money on Ebay. Then I looked around and found several power tools. They used batteries. But the batteries were dead and the charger didn't work. Still, I couldn't give those because someday I was going to get a new charger and then I could use them. Each old thing I looked at had a use someday, or could be something I might need. I found nothing there to donate. Then I looked in my closet. Lots of clothes, but all of them good and usable. And the ones that don't fit now, will when I lose a few pounds. So there was nothing there. Everywhere and everything I looked at was valuable and useable someday. I just had nothing to give. But I knew I had to give something! I finally decided to donate two battered hats, an old VHS player with no remote, two old exercise tapes and half a dozen 1958 National Geographics. Then I made a promise to myself that next year I would start looking earlier and perhaps do better. Courier Fishing Report
Upper river stocked again Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier Columnist
First, I would like to thank Fred Roach, his beautiful wife Elaine and Roberta Joughin for the wonderful BBQ they held for the fishing derby fish feeding volunteers a couple of Saturdays ago at the Joughin Ranch. Nicely done. The river was once again stocked this week from Riverside Park to Brush Creek with 1500 pounds of feisty rainbows. It’s time to get out and enjoy a well-stocked fishing hole. Salmon eggs work very well. The lake continues to rise, offering new surroundings for your favorite fish. The crappie bite is still very good just about anywhere in the North and South Forks. Jigs and minnows are best. The catfish are near their spawn time
so here are a few hot spots to try: Stine Cove, French Gulch Marina, North Fork Marina, Brown’s Cove (South Fork), and Camp Nine. Try regular old cheap hot dogs. They do work. I have recently had the good fortune to be introduced to the elite bass anglers group on Isabella Lake. We can now look forward to some really good tips and techniques by some of the premier bassers on the lake. Some speculate that the state record largemouth may be living here in our lake. A 16.5 largemouth was caught and recorded in December. May your stringers be filled with fish. Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and a volunteer at the Kern River Fish Hatchery.

Previews of new DVDs by DNA Smith Released the week of June 1: PICKS OF THE WEEK "Life" (narrated by David Attenborough) (Unrated) -Following on the heels of the award-winning BBC/Discovery Channel series "Planet Earth" is the equally spectacular "Life." This 10-episode miniseries explores life on our planet in all its forms and what all the different kinds plants and animals need to do in order to survive. From complex (and often amusing) mating rituals, hunting techniques and offbeat defensive strategies, we are shown the natural world in all its wondrous and savage splendor. There are two Oliver Reed versions available: The American/Discovery Channel version (narrated by Oprah) and the original BBC production narrated by David Attenborough. I strongly suggest you buy the Attenborough version. The script he reads from is very different than the one we heard Oprah narrate here in America. Attenborough treats the viewer as an inquisitive, intelligent adult, while the Oprah version has been dumbed-down to the point where you feel she is addressing a 3-year-old. Both versions come in either DVD or BluRay. "The Three Musketeers"/"The Four Musketeers" (PG) -- This is a two-DVD set containing the classic Richard Lester-directed films from the '70s starring Michael York, Richard Chamberlain, Oliver Reed, Raquel Welch, Charlton Heston, Christopher Lee and Fay Dunaway. In the first film, York plays D'Artagnan, a naive country boy who travels to Paris to become a musketeer. He soon falls in with the Titular Three and becomes caught up in a mission to thwart the evil machinations of Cardinal
Richelieu (Heston) and a pair of assassins (Lee and Dunaway). In the sequel, the Musketeers must protect D'Artagnan's love Constance (Welch) from being murdered by Faye Dunaway's character, who is still hoping to disgrace the French queen and bring scandal and shame to England's Duke of Buckingham. These are two great adventure films, filled with action, romance, humor and passion. You can tell the cast had a ball making them, their enthusiasm just leaps from the screen. And for a reduced price of around $13 for the pair, how could you NOT own them? DOG OF THE WEEK "Alice in Wonderland" (PG) -- Director Tim Burton inflicts his Goth Kiddie aesthetic and Danny Elfman's bombastic, intrusive score upon Lewis Carroll's classic. To add insult to injury, he also drags Johnny Depp and a host of topshelf talent (Stephen Fry, Alan Rickman and Anne Hathaway, to name a few) into this frantic, CGIladen muddlefest. Without regard or respect for the original works, Burton turns Carroll's whimsical and intelligent stories into another hackneyed blockbuster popcorn flick, devoid of wit or charm or imagination. TV SERIES "Drop Dead Diva" Season One "Rescue Me" Complete Fifth Season "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" Vol. 7 "Ghost Hunters International" Season One, Part One "Burn Notice" Season Three "Mister Ed" The Complete Third Season "Foyle's War" Set 6 "Midsomer Murders" Set 15 c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Property clearance for fuels reduction work must be completed by June 9th.
Wildfires can be damaging.
It's a clear choice, "Be Fire Wise!!!" State law requires property owners to clear a minimum of 100 feet from any structure.
Tips from the KRV Fire Safe Council Wildfire Prevention Safety Tips…. • Defensible space treatment will help to create a fire-safe area around your home and property. • Clear all weeds within ten feet of all property lines on undeveloped parcels. • Clear all weeds, brush, rubbish and dead trees within a 100-foot distance from any house or structure. • Don’t stack combustible materials such as firewood next to your house or other structures. • Clear all combustible materials within 10 feet of your propane tank. • Limb your trees up to a minimum of 6’ or to one third of the total height of the tree. • Clear your roof tops of all dried leaves and pine needles. Sweep regularly. • Clean out your gutters of dried leaves and needles. • Cut back tree limbs from roof, at least 10’ from your chimney. • Affix ¼” screening to your house vents and chimney opening. • Plant fire resistant landscaping: NO Juniper or Rosemary. Try Vinca or Rock Rose instead. • Plant fire resistant trees: NO Eucalyptus, Cypress or Pine Trees. Try Oregon Ash, Mulberry, Valley Oak or Redbud Trees instead. • Space your trees so they don’t compete for the same water. A tree that is stressed is more susceptible to wildfire. LEAN – CLEAN – GREEN It’s your choice!

Brush fires start immediately and are driven by the valley’s winds, which we don’t think of very much until fires start. If you make a fire-safe perimeter around your home, fire has no fuel to feed upon and your home might be spared. Fire season is now upon us. Weed now in the early mornings, so sparks from your weed-eating equipment don’t cause a fire.

I sometimes use a packet of powdered mushroom gravy with the cream of mushroom for extra flavor and darker gravy. Serve with rice or mashed potatoes. Bodfish Bob’s Mushroom Chicken 2 to 3 pound of chicken part (salt & peppered) 1/4 cup dry white Wine or chicken broth 1 can Cream of Mushroom soup Dash of Louisiana Hot sauce
1/2 cup Butter 1 large Onion (minced) 1/2 Bell Pepper (diced) 1 quart fresh Okra ( sliced into rounds) 4 fresh Tomatoes (coarsely chopped) Salt & pepper ( to taste)
Melt butter in a large skillet or heavy pot. Add onion and sauté over medium heat until transparent. Add bell pepper, okra and tomatoes and season. Lower heat, cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Stir occasionally and serve! Bodfish Bob's Hamburger Steak 2 lbs Ground Meat I/2 medium onion 1 teaspoon Steak Seasoning 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1 Tablespoon flour 1/4 C flour (for outside of patties) 1 can of cream of mushroom soup
5 qt. Popped corn (2 to 3 bags microwave corn) 2 C. Packed brown sugar 1 C. Butter or margarine 1/2 C. Light corn syrup 1 tsp. Baking soda 1 tsp. Vanilla extract 1 tsp. Salt
Spread popcorn on baking sheets and set aside. In large saucepan, Combine brown sugar, butter and corn syrup. Boil for 5 minutes, then remove from the heat. Add baking soda, vanilla extract and salt. Mohs scale helps in hardness Ron Bolyard Kern River Courier Columnist
This diagram is what is known as the "Mohs Hardness Scale". This is the basic relationship for the identification of minerals in the field. The other physical properties used for the field identification of minerals are: 1) Crystal Form; 2) Cleavage; 3) Luster; 4) Color; and 5) Streak; 6) Ron Bolyard the "Acid" test; and 7) Mineral relationships. The Hardness Scale is a very practical and easily applied field test. For instance, if I suspect quartz is present, I bring out my handy Barlow and try to scratch it. If it does not scratch the mineral, it is harder than a 6, but if it does scratch it, the mineral is softer than a 6. It is now when the other physical properties are used to assist and isolate what min-
eral you are trying to identify. The same technique applies to Gypsum. A fingernail will scratch gypsum and talc, but not Calcite. Calcite is very common in the Kern River Valley in the form of Limestone and Dolomite, especially in the "Lime Dike" Complex of South Lake. Placing a small drop of an acid on Calcite will cause the mineral to vigorously effervesce. Dolomite will weakly effervesce with cold acid and mildly when warmed. I use hardware store Muratic Acid diluted 10 to 1 in my test kit, but Coke will also work. Of course this is not perfect, but it does give information as to what you should use for your other criteria to identify minerals and rock types. Most geologists learn to use all the criteria in different forms to correctly identify the minerals in a rock and thus allowing them to identify the rock type. Old "Sourdoughs" used these techniques to find quartz veins that could contain a "Mother-lode" of Gold and Silver!! UNTIL NEXT WEEK … Ron Bolyard is a retired geologist and has developed an “acute interest” in the geology of the southern Sierra Nevada since he moved here in 1999.
California Joe’s Storytelling Corner
Pick a winning surgeon California Joe Kern River Courier Columnist
Three years ago the nurse who lives across the street started using bottled water for drinking and cooking. Trying California Joe to be healthy. I’m trying too. Still remember my right hemicolectomy from November 2007. I had gone to my regular gastro man
and had a colostomy, at which time he said he couldn’t get all the little guys out of there and I needed a surgeon. Three weeks later and three surgeons later, I had found my man and off we went to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles for what turned out to be a major event in my not-so-young life. Ten days later back home I realized I needed to go back and so I did for five days of life-in-the-fast-lane hospital recovery business. An infection that maybe could have been prevented sent me back there. Two years later, more trouble.

Talking About Real Estate
Strategies in a buyer’s market Matt Freeman Kern River Courier Columnist
Oftentimes I write about the fact that it is such a buyer's market right now. But in order for there to be buyers, there have to be sellers! What is the best way for a seller to get their property noticed in this market? Here are two of the biggest reasons properties either sell or do Matt Freeman not sell when they are listed. These are huge; everything else is relative. 1: Price! This is the biggest factor, especially in a buyer's market. I know, a lot of sellers think that real estate aAgents want them to price a property so low that the agent can sell it quick and get a paycheck. Well, unfortunately that situation does happen. That is why a price for a piece of property must not be based on what anyone else says, but rather on what has sold in the area recently. A seller must think like a bank. A property is not worth more because of personal reasons. It is worth what it is or is not worth based on market conditions. That means appraised value, and ultimately what a home is worth, is what a buyer is willing to pay for it. Sellers, make sure that you are
priced accordingly. Get what the property is worth, not what you THINK it is worth. Unless your home has something absolutely exceptional and unique about it (a large pool or mabye a huge 4-car garage, for example) that sets it apart from the comparable sales, the comparables are how to value the property. 2: Location. The old real estate motto: location, location, location! Well, it is true. The location of a property does play into what it is worth. A 1000 sq foot house in Kernville is worth more than in Weldon, or Bodfish. A large piece of land is worth more in Squirrel Valley than in Lake Isabella. When trying to sell in a buyer's market, get these factors properly balanced and your listing will be able to compete with the Bank Owned Foreclosures, Short Sales, Probates, and everything else on the market. You will actually make more if you do this instead of price too high. Quick example: Friend of mine got an offer on their house for 303K in Bakersfield 3 years ago. Decided not to sell, did not feel it was enough money so they sat on the house. Guess what the house is worth now? See what I mean? Price stuff right, price stuff to sell – not just to have it for sale. Matt Freeman is a Realtor with Freeman’s Lakeside Realty (760) 379-5915 or cell 223-0880. But if you feel you're acting because you believe it's the right thing to do, others will understand. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A change of mind might not necessarily be a change of heart. You still want to go ahead with your plans, but you might see a better way to make them happen. So go for it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An old business dispute could re-emerge and possibly affect upcoming negotiations. Consider opening up the situation to include suggestions from others. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some Leos and Leonas might find it somewhat difficult to get their ideas accepted or even considered. Things will soon return to the way you like them. Weeds an apt analogy in Bible Clarence Semonious, pastor Prince of Peace Lutheran Fellowship, Kernville
I understand that the weed abatement program now underway in Kern County, and most if not all of California, is for protection from the devastation caused by uncontrolled fire. The threat of fire justifies the radical readjustment of the fuel to air ratio of vegetation of, “a plant that interferes with management objectives Semonious for a given area of land at a given point in time,” a definition by J.M. Torrell in Weeds of the West, by Tom Whitson. Jesus, as an explanation of the Kingdom of Heaven, gave this description, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away.” Matthew 13:24-25. Torrell’s statement is consistent with Jesus and modern weed abatement. Another comparison possible between fire protection and the parable is the avoidance of fire. But the point made by Jesus was not motivation to avoid hell’s fire, but to avoid damage to the crop, that’s us. In Matthew 12:20, Jesus quoted Isaiah 42:3 when he said, “…a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice.” Such thoughts were not on the minds of the servants in the parable and are most certainly not acceptable to many today. As civil government becomes more polarized, human leadership is tending to appear to fit the
definition of interfering with management objectives leading to the Kingdom of heaven. The enemy of the wheat farmer is not the weeds though; his enemy is one who is neither wheat nor weeds. And the farmer is not wheat or weeds. The learning point here is that wise choices depend on IFF (Identification, Friend or Foe). Misplaced emotional identification of a person, as foe may cause one to suffer personal loss. In fact that person may be a useful, but a minor obstruction needing greater understanding and love. In the words of Ephesians 5:1, “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.” A better way would be to “walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:2. Jesus was asked, “…which is the great commandment in the Law?” He stated, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Matthew 22:37. But he did not stop there; he added, “…And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:39. Of course we are to avoid certain behaviors. They are listed in the Bible. But from a book, said to have been published sometime prior to 1161AD, a Chinese proverb has come, “All warfare is based on deception.” Jesus is “…the truth, and the life. John 14:5. Three guys die and go to heaven. The first goes up to St. Peter, who says, "I have only one question before you go into heaven: Were you faithful to your wife?" The guy answers, "Yes, I never even looked at another women." St. Peter says, "See that Rolls-Royce over there? That's your car to drive while you’re in heaven." The second guy gets the same question and answers: "Once I strayed, but I confessed to my wife and she forgave me and we worked it out." St. Peter says, "See that new Accord over there? That's your car to use in heaven." The third guy answers the same question: "I have to admit, I chased every female I could, and was with a lot of women." St. Peter says, "Well, that’s pretty bad. But you were basically a good guy otherwise, so that old VW Bug over there is yours to use while you’re in heaven." The three guys go off on their separate ways. A few weeks later #2 and #3 are driving along in the Accord when they see #1's Rolls Royce parked outside of a bar. They stop and go into the bar and find #1 with empty bottles all around him, laying down with his face in his hands on the bar. He’s sobbing gently. They come up to him and #2 says, "Buddy, what could possibly be so bad? You're in heaven, you drive a Rolls Royce, and everything is great!" The guy with the Rolls says, "I saw my wife today!" The other two answer, "That's great! What's the problem?" He answers, "She was riding a moped!"

Health Insurance Matters
Logic not applied to national health insurance Harry P. Thal Kern River Courier Columnist
Think about if national health insurance applied to autos. Here’s a hypothetical story: U.S. Senator Generic Jones-Smith's son is a high school senior ready to graduate. Senator Jones-Smith Harry Thal purchases for his son a 2-year-old SUV to transport himself back and forth to his local community college. Once the papers were all signed, he went to his local insurance agent and added the SUV to his policy.
Senator Jones-Smith brought the SUV into the local auto body shop and requested that the dent in the bumper be repaired or replaced, so the car would appear "like new" when he gives it to his son. The repair shop queried as to how the dent occurred. Senator Jones-Smith admitted it was in this condition when it was purchased. The shop informed him that the repair costs would be out of pocket, as the auto policy would not cover "pre-existing conditions". Miffed, Senator Generic Smith-Jones wrote legislation requiring all auto insurance companies doing business in the United States to cover all repairs on all cars regardless of when the accident occurred. His legislation further went on to require
that all maintenance, oil changes and tires be covered by the insurance. His legislation also regulated what the insurance company may charge in premiums. If there are not competitive companies, each state will form insurance plans to compete with the private plans. Being a leader in his party, he managed to push this legislation through within a few months. The White House wanted to make sure that the 32 million drivers without insurance were able to qualify for coverage, so the law was signed. What Senator Generic JonesSmith hadn't considered is that there is a shortage of mechanics. So, when the law is fully implemented in 2014, there will be long lines at service stations. There is a potential that many
emergency repairs may be delayed, as people line up for oil changes. There will be unintended consequences. Fortunately, each state will be developing regulations following the federal guidelines. Hopefully, the car insurance agents will be able to educate the state legislators to create regulations so all people can have access at affordable prices. Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker and a member of the Society of Certified Senior Advisors and past president and presidentelect of the Kern Association of Health Underwriters. they are best left alone, since they shrink at menopause. What causes leiomyoma? Can it become cancer? What treatments are available? -- L.B. ANSWER: "Leiomyoma" (LIE-ohmy-OH-muh) is the medical word for "fibroid." Fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterine muscle. The

times removal of only the fibroid is possible, and this can be managed in some cases with a scope and special instruments. Uterine artery embolization is a newer treatment in which a slender, soft tube (a catheter) is passed from a surface artery to the uterine artery. When it's at the precise spot, the doctor releases sandsize synthetic particles that clog the artery and cut off the fibroid's blood supply. It withers and is shed. The booklet on fibroids describes them in detail. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1106W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. uterus basically is a muscular sack with a lining designed to nourish a fetus. The cause of fibroids hasn't been determined. They're extremely common. By age 35, 40 percent to 50 percent of women have one or more. By age 50, 70 percent to 90 percent have at least one fibroid. For most of these women, fibroids cause no trouble and can be ignored. Large fibroids might cause pelvic pain, and they can press on adjacent structures such as the bladder. When that happens, a woman has a need to empty her bladder frequently. Heavy menstrual bleeding is a sign of fibroids. They also can bring painful menstrual periods, and sometimes they make sexual relations uncomfortable. Infertility is cited as a possible effect, but infertility due to fibroids is rare. Transformation into cancer is possible, but not probable. If a fibroid grows rapidly, that's a sign of cancer change and must be investigated. Most fibroids shrink with menopause. Doctors can treat fibroids in a number of ways. One is removal of the uterus -- hysterectomy. If a woman wants more children, some-

March of 2009 the gallbladder gave up the ghost. This time I picked a Bakersfield surgeon, thinking this was no big deal. I was wrong. A month later I was still lying in a Bakersfield hospital wishing I could get out of there. Finally, a week later I made a belated escape, you might say. And now in May 2010, I returned to my surgeon of choice at Cedars- Sinai who once again put me under the knife and repaired a vary large abdominal hernia and sent me on my way a week later. All of the above commentary is no excuse for not picking the best surgeon in a major city and staying with him through thick and thin. And that’s what I’m telling all of you to do now, if you can. Pick a winner and stay with him! That was after my Cedars-Sinai doc-
tor explicitly told me. And I didn’t heed his advice and boy did I live to regret it. Luckily for me I’m still around to count my blessings. You ought to see the “before the hernia repair surgery” pix that my Cedars- Sinai surgeon has of his pre-op encounter with me. I got the same room on the eighth floor. It’s like a suite on that floor and the food was great. The view out the window was marvelous. And once again Miz Sue was right there sleeping on an extra bed the head nurse thoughtfully supplied. Just like home, almost. Don’t forget to take my advice!
