Catch the Kids’ Fishing Derby Courier Release

A RC glider is put into flight over the Kern Valley above Weldon.

The Fish and Game Habitat Club invites all children ages 4 through 15 for a free day of fun at the 26th annual Kids’ Fishing Derby. The Derby starts at 6 a.m. on Saturday June 1 and weigh-in closes at 2 p.m. The Derby headquarters will be at Wofford Heights Park on Evans Road. All contestants must register at the Derby Headquarters before fishing. Registration will be open on Friday May 31 from 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturday June 1 from 6 to 9 a.m. There will be first, second and third place trophies for the biggest fish caught in various age groups and there will be many activities at the Derby Headquarters until 3 p.m. Each registered child will get a free lunch of hot dog, chips and soda and lunch for adults is available for a donation. The awards will be presented at 3 p.m. along with special drawings for other prizes. Tickets for the special drawing will be given at registration, and you must be present to win. Children may fish in the stocked trout fishing pond, in Isabella Lake or the Kern River and fish must be brought to Derby Headquarters by 2 p.m. to be weighed. All fishing regulations will still be in effect. The limit for trout is five, crappie limit is 25 and no bass are allowed . The Fish and Game Habitat Club, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife sponsor this derby with support from local merchants and other Kern Valley service organizations. people

Michael Batelaan Courier Special Even with what many view as low lake and river water levels, the Kern River Courier reports on how the Kern River Valley remains a visitor destination for California, the nation and world. Big boys and their toys arrive from all over the world to a windy hill top high above Weldon. With controls, these planes cost $4 to 5,000 each, and weigh up to 70 pounds with a 12 foot wing span. Enthusiasts come to Weldon because the contours of that hilltop create a cresting effect like a wave that causes the plane to soar faster. The windier or storm front conditions the better.

They fly in a circular pattern that builds speed with each downward pass. While different flight patterns can be employed in dynamic soaring, the simplest example is a closed loop across the boundary layer between two air masses in relative movement. This day there were pilots from southern California, Colorado, and Brazil. In the past, enthusiasts have been drawn from Germany, Australia and New Zealand and have soared from the Weldon hill. And an annual DS festival is held in Weldon. Last April, the top four to five record holders in the world were on the hill top in Weldon. As of March 2012, the highest reported speed for radio control gliders

was 498 mph. There is no official sanctioning organization that certifies speeds, so records are listed unofficially based on readings from radar guns, although analysis from video footage and other sources is also used. Lately, some models have begun carrying onboard telemetry and other instruments to record such things as acceleration and air speed. In the late 1990s, radiocontrolled gliding awoke to the idea of dynamic soaring. Radio controlled glider pilots perform dynamic soaring using the leeward side of ground features such as ridges and saddles. If the ridge faces the wind, and has a steep back (leeward) side, it can cause flow

separation off the top of the hill, resulting in a layer of fast air moving over the top of a volume of stagnant or reverseflow air behind the hill. The velocity gradient, or wind shear, can be much greater than those used by birds or full scale sailplanes. The higher gradient results in much higher speeds for the aircraft. Models repeatedly cross the shear layer by flying in a circular path, penetrating a fast-moving headwind after flying up the back side, turning to fly with the wind, diving down through the shear layer and turning again to fly back up the back side of the hill. Because of the speeds involved, significant structural reinforcement in the fuselage and wing is important.

The primary reason for installing an alternative energy system, solar paneling, is to reduce the cost of electricity needed for the District structures and to run the water delivery system for the irrigation of the cemetery. The District has had several alternative energy presentations by local and regional contractors. Divine Power USA of Arvin has been delected and will install a system for $58,000. The funds

The goal of District manager Randy Kyt is to procure as much of the $85,000 as possible by requesting support from the community, businesses, organizations and individuals in the form of tax deductible donations. Kyt is reaching out to as many people as possible to ask for donations that will cover the cost of the systems and installation. Kyt says, “Your support of our community cemetery is a reminder for the present and future generations that it is truly the people and businesses of the Kern River Valley that make this a great place to live and vacation.” Kyt invites anyone with questions to call him at 760-376-2189.

Locals grateful for community’s support A few weeks back, we had dinner with Jeanette Rogers-Erickson and her husband Charley Erickson who spoke highly of his recent Honor Flight experience. The Courier ran a story about the Honor Flight in November and The Kern Valley Sun started a series with an excellent article “When ‘Thank You’ just isn’t enough” by George Stahl, which talked about the Honor Flight Network and local veterans. We decided to bring the new film Honor Flight to the Kern River Valley for Memorial Day week. It was shown twice free at Kern Valley High School on Tuesday, May 21, thanks to principal John Meyers and substantial financial support from Assemblywoman Connie Conway and many local donors at the Veterans of Foreign Wars and around the Valley. Thanks to the Kern River Courier, Kern Valley Sun and Kern River radio for providing special rates for our advertising. Charlie Busch’s radio spot may have been his best yet! Volunteers baked or brought cookies and served refreshments. Burger King donated drinks. Isabella Market donated bottled water. Elaine Kennedy at Chatterbox Café donated back $175 of what we were going to pay her for the excellent refreshments she made. Any funds we’ve raised not used to put on the films, gets donated to the local hub, Honor Flight Kern County, to help send more Kern County Vets on an Honor Flight of their own. More than $1,400 was collected on the day of the films. We donated the Honor Flight DVD to the Kern Rriver Valley Library, where you can take it out anytime and watch it at home. Kern Valley residents Karen and Gary Zuber have been instrumental in including KRV veterans for Honor Flights from Kern County since the first flight from Bakersfield took place one year ago. At the films, they ran out of Honor Flight applications and forms for people to volunteer to be a “guardian” on an Honor Flight, like the one that leaves Meadows Field in Bakersfield at 4:30am Friday, May 31. Those who watched the movie were touched by the amazing return at the airport in the film. You can be part of Honor Flight on 9:30pm, Sunday, June 2, when Honor Flight Kern County brings vets back to the Meadows Field in Bakersfield. Give them the welcome home reception they deserve! Resource center presents ‘The Parent Project’ A 16-week program designed for the parents of strong-willed or out-of-control children starts on Thursday, June 6 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Senior Center in Lake Isabella. The program costs $20 which includes a workbook to keep and can be paid over a six-week period. A light dinner will be provided. Elks annual Flag Day celebration The Kern Valley Elks Lodge is holding its annual American Flag Day celebration at the Elks Lodge in Wofford Heights on Friday, June 14. The public is invited. The original American Fraternal Order and Social Club, now the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks has celebrated Flag Day since the early days of the organization and allegiance to the flag is a requirement to become an Elk. In 1907, the BPOE Grand Lodge designated by resolution that June 14 be Flag Day. The Grand Lodge of the Order adopted mandatory observance of this date by every Lodge in 1911, and that observance still stands. The Elks prompted President Woodrow Wilson to recognize the Order’s Observance of Flag Day for its patriotic expression. The Flag Day ceremony begins in the Elks Lodge dining room at 5 p.m. sharp. Members of the Kern Valley Boy Scouts will present various flags during the History of the Flags. The DAR will have a reading about the history of the American Flag. This is a highly patriotic and moving ceremony. Exalted ruler Glen Cashwheelerr, past exalted rulers and current trustees will be in uniform. The dinner for $10 will consist of fried chicken with the fixings plus apple pie, follows the ceremony at about 6 p.m. Non members are to use the front door of the Lodge and proceed directly into the dining room.

Seven Godly virtues, No. 1 Janet Kutzner, Lay Eucharistic Minister St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Kernville During the season of Lent, the Bishop’s Notes focused on the Seven Deadly Sins. Now I would like to focus on Virtue Kutzner with an examination of the Seven Godly Virtues. Saint Paul wrote to the Church in Philippi: “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Philippians 4:8 ESV) According to the Catholic Catechism a virtue is: “a habitual and firm disposition to do the good. It allows the person not only to perform good acts, but to give the best of himself. The virtuous person tends toward the good with all his sensory and spiritual powers; he pursues the good and chooses it in concrete actions.” (Article 7: 1803) It is that habit and disposition to do good which contradicts the temptation to sin. sin is not to get oneself into heaven, but to live out what it means to be a child of God. It was Saint Gregory of Nyssa, in his work on the Beatitudes, who wrote: “The goal of a virtuous life is to become like God.” The Seven Godly Virtues are Humility, Charity, Kindness, Diligence, Chastity, Patience and Temperance. I wrote that the root of the Deadly Sins is Pride. Equally, the root of the Godly Virtues is Humility. A quick Google search will bring lots of definitions, but all have a similar feel - the ability to not think of oneself first, but to think of others before self. This does not mean that a humble person has what is popularly known as “low self-esteem.” This is just the opposite. The person who is humble has a true self-esteem knowing that they are nothing without God, but with God they are a regenerated, redeemed and reborn child of God. The virtue of humility opens the doors for the other virtues because it recognizes it’s complete and utter dependence on God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is the opposite of the sin of Pride which declares: “I am sufficient unto myself." I pray you the gift and virtue of Humility! Blessings to you all. Bands to Rock the Lake Courier Release

School’s out? Dan Schlensker, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Lake Isabella Here we are the first week of June. School’s out! Schlensker I don’t think there’s anyone between the ages of 6 and 18, who doesn’t look forward to the end of a school year. Even if you’re older than that, like I am, you can remember that great feeling of the onset of summer vacation. The Kern River Valley surely got into the swing of summer last weekend with the big influx of flatlanders getting their first taste of summer recreation. Although perhaps summer vacation brings on a hiatus in learning activities and a break in academic or scholastic growth for those who are in school, what about spiritual progress? Ought a Christian to take time off from that which produces spiritual growth, like worship together in God’s house, the blessing of the Sacraments, Bible study and the fellowship of the saints? The apostle Peter, in his second letter, encourages his addressees to “be on your guard lest, … you fall from your own steadfastness, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:17-18) Persistent attention to one’s own relationship to Jesus and spiritual growth is a continuing concern.

Spiritual sustenance is an ongoing need, just like every living thing needs a constant flow of nourishment. Those involved in some kind of educational process do need a break from their studies once in a while; but that’s different from taking a break from eating! In his first letter, Peter admonished readers, “like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the word, that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord” (1 Peter 2:2-3). It’s important that we stay plugged in to the source of our spiritual nourishment. That doesn’t mean we have to stay home all summer, but it does mean that wherever we go we ensure that we continue to be spiritually fed, like the folks visiting Lake Isabella from Long Beach, who visited Shepherd of the Hills last Sunday seeking spiritual sustenance. Take your Bible and devotional material with you on vacation, so you don’t dry up or starve yourself during your time away. Paul tells the Christians in Ephesus that, “we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him, who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by that which every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love” (Ephesians 4:14-16).

Alzheimers Adult Day Services Program The Alzheimers Disease Association of Kern County hosts the Adult Day Services Program every Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lake Isabella Senior Center. The program was developed as a way to care for the frail elderly and persons with a memory loss who shouldn’t be left unattended or who enjoy stimulating activities. ADAKC offers a meaningful and safe situation outside of the home for participants and needed relief time for their care givers. The program includes limited physical exercise, fellowship, community involvement, arts and crafts, music, reminiscing, guest entertainers, support services, meals. By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK “Oz the Great and Powerful” (PG) — Years before Dorothy and Toto landed over the rainbow, another Kansas yokel went on an adventure down the yellow brick road. Oscar Diggs (James Franco) is a small-time magician and part-time con man who hatches a silly scheme to attain greatness. He winds up in a colorful world where he befriends a flying monkey (voiced by Zach Braff) and meets three charming witches (Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis). Of course it’s not going to measure up to the original. I’ll get that out of the way first. There’s no music, for one. James Franco acts like he’s not supposed to carry the movie. Franco can give a real performance, but the guy isn’t convincing when he’s talking to computer-generated critters. “Snitch” (PG-13) — When Jason (Rafi Gavron) is busted for receiving a shipment of ecstasy, the teenager faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years. Fortunately, his father, John (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), is an enormous and caring fellow. To make a deal to get his son out of trouble, John volunteers to go undercover and to take down a drug ring. It’s a distressed-dad action flick with an overt mes-

sage about the War on Drugs: It’s bad. Johnson puts in the effort, and you can see his skill here. He’s still a miscast -- an action-hero type charged with playing an everyman -- but it’s an entertaining rental and somewhat unique for an action flick of its class. “Wrong” (R) — Do not expect this movie to make sense ... at all. It’s funny. But it won’t let you enjoy it as a casual experience. In “Wrong,” a man (Jack Plotnick) searches for his lost dog. Palm trees decide to be pines, office cubicles are subject to torrential weather patterns, and people are just strange. There’s nothing really to “get” besides the idea that this movie wants to break the mold of the slice-of-life film genre. It might frustrate some viewers. Scratching your head and going along with the absurdity on screen is the best-case scenario for such an out-there flick. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Mix beef, half of tomato paste and the remaining ingredients thoroughly. Spread into lightly greased loaf pan. Top with remaining tomato paste and brown sugar, if desired, and bake at 350 degrees for 75 minutes.

Lightly grease a 5x9 inch loaf pan. Press the brown sugar in the bottom of the prepared loaf pan and spread the ketchup over the sugar. In a mixing bowl, mix thoroughly all remaining ingredients and shape into a loaf. Place on top of the ketchup. Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour or until juices are clear.

Health Insurance Matters

Memorial Day Harry P. Thal Kern River Courier Columnist Having just celebrated Memorial Day, I thought it timely to answer questions in print that I regularly receive from veterans over the phone. If you have been honorably discharged or released Thal from the military, you may be able to get benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Your spouse and children may also be able to get benefits. Veterans are entitled to a wide range of medically necessary services, including hospital inpatient and outpatient care, prescription drugs prescribed by a VA physician, emergency care at VA facilities, preventive care, rehabilitation, mental health and substance abuse treatment, home health and hospice care. The key wording is â&#x20AC;&#x153;medically necessaryâ&#x20AC;? and prescriptions written by a VA physician. Veterans can receive care at any VA facility. There are no limits on the number of days of care or outpatient visits the VA will provide, as long as services are available. Many Kern River Valley residents receive VA benefits, but want to know how they coordinate with Medicare. Truth be told, they do not work together, but can work side by side. Often a medication may not be covered by Medicare Part D, but will be covered by the VA. Benzodiazepines and barbitu-

rates are good examples of meds not covered by the Medicare program. Yet, the VA charges $8 to fill generic prescriptions, and several Part D Medicare drug plans have a $0 co-pay. Also, while medical services are great when you can get an appointment at the VA, sometimes it is easier to use a local doctor rather than the drive to Bakersfield. Medicare makes this a good alternative. However, Medicare does have deductibles and co-pays, so for some, electing a Medicare Advantage HMO may be the answer, as some of these plans have a $0 deductible, $0 co-pay for office visits, and even the hospital. The VA does not cover hearing aids, eyeglasses and routine dental care, unless they are considered necessary treatment for a service-connected medical condition. These are low-cost options for several Advantage plans. I have found that people on MediCal with a Share of Cost (SOC) also will find the Medicare Advantage plan a way to reduce their expenses.
