Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier

Kern County Fire Department Special to the Courier Just before 8:30 p.m. on May 1, the Kern County Fire Department received a call about a structure fire in the 600 block of Bristlecone Drive in Wofford Heights. About 13 firefighters responded. Fire crews were faced with a developing fire in the kitchen of a single-wide mobile home. The two residents received major burn injuries following a natural gas explosion that occurred while they were relightdining

‘Flocks, Herds, Litters and Schools,’ oh my! Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier What do you call a group of giraffes? Have you ever heard of a prickle of porcupines? “Flocks, Herds, Litters and Schools,” is a new children’s nonfiction book by Wofford Heights resident Jim McMullan. It teaches children and adults alike some of the unusual, clever and downright strange names for collections and groups of animals. We’ve all heard of a flock of sheep or a colony of ants, but what about a leap of leopards and an ostentation of peacocks? “Flocks, Herds, Litters and Schools,” Jim’s ninth book, and first with Aerodale Press, was inspired by his sons, Sky and Tyson, 5 and 7 years old at the time when they asked the simple question of why a group of geese was called “a gaggle” and by his clever wife, Helene, who knew the answer. The book is filled with beautiful pictures and packed with fun animal facts and information. It explores the interesting, and often unknown, names used for groups of our favorite animals. Jim and Helene came from Island Heights, NJ - a sailing town - four years ago. Spending half of each year living near their two sons in Wofford Heights and the other half sailing on the Jersey shore. “We always like to live in places with the

word ’heights’ in them,” McMullan joked. McMullan grew up in Long Island, NY and was always creating something, inventing something or building something. He studied industrial design at Parsons School of Design for a short time before enrolling in Kansas University’s School of Architecture, graduating in 1961 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. From there, on a whim, he went to Hollywood in 1961 to visit a friend and, through a chance meeting with playwright William Inge, he was given a screen test for Sam Peckinpah's “Ride The High Country,” The test was sent to Universal Pictures, which resulting in a seven-year contract and began a successful 40-year film career. He has starred in dozens of feature films including “Shenandoah,” “Downhill Racer,” and “The Incredible Shrinking Woman.” He has appeared in hundreds of TV shows, and many people remember him as Senator Dowling in “Dallas.” McMullan will be holding a book signing Saturday, May 5 at the Big Blue Bear, 101 Piute Drive on Circle Park in Kernville from noon to 3 p.m. His other books include “Actors As Artists,” “Musicians As Artists,” “This Face You Got,” “Instant Zen,” “Cheatin’ Hearts, Broken Dreams and Stomped On Love,” “Hail To The Chief,” “Happily Ever After” and “Do It NOW - Book and Clock.”

Cerro Coso seeks public input Cerro Coso Community College is seeking public feedback on its Accreditation Self-Evaluation Report available for review online at www.cerrocoso.edu/accreditation. The college is preparing for its accreditation visit conducted by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges. This visit, and the preparation that it involves, usually occurs on a six-year cycle. The web site will remain active until May 11. “Community feedback, including suggestions and/or criticisms, is an important component of our ability to validate what we do as a college,” concluded vice president of Academic Affairs, Dr. Corey Marvin.

Dam Task Force to be formed Kern River Valley Revitalization, jointly with the Kern River Valley and Kernville Chambers of Commerce, are forming a local “Dam Task Force.” They will jointly begin to hold meetings soon. Watch the Courier, listen to local radio stations and Facebook “damtaskforce” for a time and place for the first meeting.

DFG Clarifies Legal Take Methods for Wild Turkeys The Department of Fish & Game is clarifying an inadvertent error found in the 2011-12 Mammal Hunting Regulation booklet. On page 19 of the booklet, section 311(f) indicates that “0.20 caliber minimum for taking wild turkey” is required. This is incorrect but has been corrected in the online version of the booklet. The actual regulation was changed in 2011 after the booklet was printed and the correct regulation for 311(f) is: “Air rifles powered by compressed air or gas and used with any caliber of pellet, except that wild turkey may only be taken with a pellet that is at least 0.177 caliber.” The 2012-13 mammal hunting regulation booklet is now in preparation and this change will be reflected.

Fireworks donations sought It’s that time once again to celebrate our country’s Independence. The Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce has a long-standing tradition of hosting a fireworks show for both local residents and visitors. With other shows in surrounding areas being canceled, or on the brink of being canceled, we do not want to find ourselves in the situation of disappointing our visitors. As is the case every year, the fireworks show is dependent solely upon donations from the community. With about two months to go, we are far short of meeting our goal of $14,000 to put on this year’s event. If you would like to sponsor a shell via credit card, you can do that online at: http://www.kernrivervalleychamber.com/fireworks.html. If you would like to make your donation in person, just drop by the Chamber office at 6404-B Lake Isabella Blvd, Tuesday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Library Activities for May The library will celebrate National Children’s Book Week May 6 through 12. What’s in a name? Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist I was listening to XM radio in my car the other day and heard a story about a dog trainer whose name was just odd enough that I couldn’t get it out of my head. It was Dr. Barkin Bowser. Middleworth I chuckled to myself, thinking “how appropriate that name is,” and then got to wondering, “just what kind of odd names are out there?” So I did what any red-blooded writer would do. I went to Google and asked for a list of odd names. I got 126,000 hits and the first one was the one I locked onto. It held a list of more than 1,000 names of actual people whose names described them or what they did. As I read the list, I noticed a lot of parents who must have had a strange sense of humor when naming their offspring. I couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like to go through life with names like Benny Factor or a dentist named Dr. Toothman. I had some eye surgery recently, and my doctor’s name is Dr. See. He told me he’s taking a lot of kidding about his name and what he does. How about some other name like Bo Narro (who is probably a talent-

ed bowman). Then there is Brooke Lynn Bridge and still another, Armand Hammer, who was a person of note in Bakersfield business circles. As I glanced through the pages I found Rick Shaw who no doubt runs a human taxi service in San Francisco’s China Town. Here are some more: Phyllis Teen, Shanda Lear and a guy who probably looks forward to lunch - Sam Which. I found other names and I guessed what they did. There was ■ An attorney named Sue Yu ■ A runner called Jim Shortz ■ A record collector, Vic Trolla; ■ A weather reporter, Wayne Dwops; ■ A party lover Tate Urchips; ■ A lady fence installer, Jayne Linkfence; ■ A window shade installer, Vinny Shinblinds; ■ A doctor who specializes in mus cle functions, Yuri Thritis; ■ A Mexican restaurant owner, Casey Diaz; and ■ A religious convert Bjorn Agen There’s more, lots more. Why not take a couple of minutes and think of some you’ve known? As for me, now I have the flavor of some odd names that color our country. I still wonder, however, what my mother was thinking when she named me Rodney111. Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.

16th annual History Day celebration, May 12 Come one, come all to the History Day Celebration at the Kern Valley Museum where the whole family can learn about what life was like in the Old West. This year the Historical Society is going all out for this one day celebration. There will be demonstrations of Old West skills, entertainment, pie baking and costume contests - all free to the public. The pies must be made from scratch just like the old days. So if you know how to bake a pie, bake it, and bring it, and enter it in the contest. The more the contestants there are, the more fun. Dig out those old costumes, put them on, show up and join the fun. Other demonstrations of old time skill on display will be blacksmithing,

‘Mother’s Day’ misses mark By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Vow” (PG-13) — After a car accident takes away his wife’s memory of the past five years, Leo (Channing Tatum) is determined to make Paige (Rachel McAdams) fall in love with him again. This is not another adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel, but you could have fooled me by the way the posters, previews and plot seem familiar. However, “The Vow” still has something to offer for the lover of sappy romcoms and seeker of movies for date night. Paige’s struggle is mostly about finding a life that makes sense to her — a lot has changed for her in the five years that she doesn’t remember. Leo’s struggle is bringing her back to the person it took her years to grow into. Tatum has the charm and the abs to be a romantic-movie star, but he can’t quite carry the dramatic weight of the story. “Underworld: Awakening” (R) — One can’t be certain how many films there are in this particular action-horror series, but this is certainly one of them. Kate Beckinsale takes up her role as Selene, a vampire lady who is frequently called upon to flip around and shoot things. The twist this time is that the human world has caught on to the existence of vampires and werewolves in the present day.

The movie sticks to a few notes. Everything is black with blue lighting. All fights are superhuman gunfights with bits of kung fu. All dialog is horrible and pointless. Sure, Rebecca these movies are DeMornay in about the “Mother’s Day.” skintight blackcostumed shootouts, but who says there can’t be character development or an interesting plot to go with the full automatics? “Mother’s Day” (R) — This remake of a bizarre 1980 horror film misses the mark for suspense and winds up with tedium instead. Three violent brothers break out of prison to find that their home has been foreclosed on and sold to a young couple. The fugitives turn a gathering of friends into a hostage situation that escalates when they call in the head honcho: their mom. Rebecca De Mornay plays the mother with as much straight-laced menace as she can. The film is directed by a fellow who did some of the “Saw” sequels, and the overall tone and torture aspect land in that region. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Recipes for Dummies by Bodfish Bob and cook until slightly browned and warmed through. Assemble burgers with patty, pineapple slices, lettuce, onion slices, Swiss cheese and bacon Bodfish Bob’s Aloha Dog 8 hot dogs 8 hot dog buns 8 slices bacon 1/4 cup crushed pineapple 1 oz. pineapple juice 4 tsp. honey 1/8 cup brown sugar sweet honey barbecue sauce 1 can Bush’s Baked Beans Bodfish Bob’s Aloha Burger 1 pound ground beef 3/4 cup teriyaki sauce 1 small can pineapple slices 1 large onion, sliced 4 lettuce leaves 4 buns 4 slices Swiss cheese 4 strips bacon, fully cooked 1 T butter Drain pineapple juice in a bowl. Add teriyaki sauce and mix. Place pineapple slices and three tablespoons of pineapple teriyaki mixture in a resealable plastic bag. Turn to coat and set aside. Shape hamburger into four patties and spoon remaining pineapple teriyaki sauce over top. Preheat grill. Butter buns. Place burger patties on hot grill and grill until done. Place buns on grill cut side down to toast lightly. Remove pineapple slices from bag and place on grill

In a saucepan, preheated to medium, combine the pineapple juice and brown sugar. Heat to boiling, stirring so sugar dissolves. Add honey. Remove from heat. Cool. Cut a slit in each hot dog, lengthwise, beginning about a quarter-inch from each end, making sure that you do not cut through the bottom. After the syrup has cooled and thickened, add crushed pineapple. Spoon pineapple-syrup mixture into the hot dog slits. Wrap each hot dog with a slice of bacon. Cook until bacon is golden, about 10 minutes. Near the end of the grilling process, brush with a little barbeque sauce. Keep a spray bottle handy for flare-ups! Place hot dog in bun. Spoon baked beans on top. Visit Bodfish Bob on the internet at www.bodfishbob.com or email him at bodfishbob @hotmail.com

“One Nation Under God” May 11 On Friday, May 11, Kern Valley Bible Church will host “One Nation Under God” - a national, two-hour DVD event featuring top American thinkers and political leaders who will offer their views about the true relationship between God and America. The program will be viewed in churches and homes across the nation. Speakers include Dr. James Dobson, formerly of Focus on the Family; historian David Barton; former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich; former Congressman Bob McEwen; Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Coalition; Dr. Timothy Johnson, president of the Frederick Douglass Foundation; Lila Rose, president of Live Action and John Stemberger, president of the Florida Family Policy Council.

One Nation Under God is presented by United in Purpose: a non-partisan, nonprofit organization whose mission is to change American culture for the good, using the Bible as the standard of truth. “We’ve lost sight of our great heritage as a nation founded on Biblical truth, and the consequences are dire,” said Bill Dallas, CEO of United in Purpose. “Schools are failing, the divorce rate is climbing, and our society is rife with scandal and corruption. It’s time to reclaim our Biblical heritage and bring God back to the center of American life. The One Nation Under God event is designed to advance that goal by raising the awareness of people across America.” The Kern Valley Bible Church is located at 3920 Golden Spur in Lake Isabella. Refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Debby Fieber 760417-9071.

Jack Duitsman, Pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville All the rivers flow into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers flow, there they flow again. Ecclesiastes 1:7 The Spirit of God is working on Duitsman the grand stage of human history, where billions of lives are orchestrated amazingly into the unfolding of the Father’s purpose in creation. And the Holy Spirit is continually working within the Church in every corner of the world to push back the domain of darkness, and advance the unfolding plan of redemptive love in each successive generation. God’s Spirit is active in every moment’s unfolding to bring to bear the Kingdom of God on earth even as it is in heaven. It is important to understand that as the focus gets smaller in terms of affected numbers, the relative importance never changes. The Father never sacrifices the importance of the individual for the collective need of the many. The grand work of human history is made up of the collective lives of individuals, and it is with each of these individuals clearly in mind that the Father brought His Son into the world as Savior.

The personal and ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in each one of us who are believers in Jesus is present because the Father’s plan for each of us is as fluid as the life we each experience. It is ongoing because it literally takes a lifetime for this plan to find its point of perfection. As rapidly as we might like to move in maturity as disciples of our Lord, the outworking of the Father’s plan in us will still only find its fulfillment at the end of life’s journey. Conversely, as negligent as we may be to finding a life of obedience to the principles of our Father’s Word, and as haltingly as we may be willing to be led by the Holy Spirit, the end of the Father’s plan will still come about as life comes to a close. So we ought to embrace the opportunity afforded us in this life to know the Father’s heart, and welcome wholeheartedly all that the Holy Spirit is willing to work within us. The amazing nature of God’s unfolding grace will forever be an ongoing source of wonder as we know Him more. As Solomon so philosophically penned the idea that the ever-flowing rivers never are able to overflow the earth’s oceans, so too our lives will never be finished with all that the Father has in store for us. But as the rivers never stop their attempt to fill the oceans to overflowing, let us gladly embrace every new touch of the Spirit as it affects our lives, and thirst for more of the same. Indeed, may our heart’s cry ever be: “Come O Lord and overflow us!”

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) A mood change could make you seek the company of just a few friends. But you charge back into the crowd for weekend fun and games. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) A decision you made in good faith could come under fire. Best advice: Open your mind to other possibilities by listening to your challenger’s point of view. PISCES (Feb. 19 to Mar. 20) You can avoid being swamped by all those tasks dangling from your line this week by tackling them one by one, according to priority. The weekend brings good news. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

April 20, 27 and May 4, 2012) NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on the notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgages, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 661-945-5525 using the file number 12-2205. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet web site. The best way to verify the postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Dave Says

Health Insurance Matters

Don’t stay down

Turning 65, part 5

David Ramsey Kern River Courier Columnist Dear Dave, I just lost my job due to company-wide layoffs. I have an emergency fund, but I’m losing my health insurance. Our state has a program Ramsey that covers children’s healthcare in these kinds of situations. Would it be OK to accept this for my kids until I find another job and things get better? Paul Dear Paul, There's absolutely nothing wrong with accepting help when you’re struggling. On the other hand, to define yourself as being down or struggling is a really bad thing. You should never just sit there, consider yourself helpless, and expect someone else to take care of you. Remember this: everyone falls down. Losers stay down, but successful people get back up! -Dave Dear Dave, I have tenants who have been perfect in paying rent on time for almost a year. Last month, the woman lost her job, and when I went to collect the rent the other day, she said she didn’t have any money. I’m pretty sure they used part of it for a car

payment and the electric bill, and I know they need these things. Still, I'm torn over how to handle this and how lenient to be. Alex Dear Alex, Since you know about their situation, and you’re their landlord, you could offer to try and formulate a plan that would help them get through this tough time. If it were me, I’d sit down with them and make a budget and list of priorities. Food comes first, water and electricity after that, then rent, and finally the car. Get into their business a little, and find out what else is going on in their lives. You have to be fair and firm to be a quality landlord. I’d be willing to cut them some slack if they're cooperative and honestly have to choose between feeding their kids and paying me. The biggest thing is to treat them the way you would want to be treated if the roles were reversed. I think most people want to do what’s right, but you want to feel good about extending mercy when appropriate. -Dave Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers. Harry P. Thal Kern River Courier Columnist

Over the past several weeks, I have advised readers how to sort their mail regarding Medicare and their soon turning 65. You can find back issues of the Thal Courier from their office, or online at www.KernRiverCourier. com. Today we will discuss the Medicare prescription benefit, also known as Medicare Part D for those people receiving benefits from Medi-Cal. Medi-Cal is known to residents of the other 49 states as Medicaid. This is a Federal program along with state participation, to assist people in lower financial circumstances. For people under age 65 who are not on Medicare due to disability, Medi-Cal pays for their needed prescription medication. Once they qualify for Medicare, they are referred to as a “dual-eligible” or “medi-medi.” It is the Medi-Cal person’s responsibility to enroll in a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan (PDP) or to join a Medicare Advantage HMO plan which contains the prescription benefit. If an eligible person does not sign up for a plan on their own accord, Medi-Cal will automatically assign them to a plan. As each

plan available has its own “formulary” (list of covered medications), the random assignment of a plan may not be in the best interest of the consumer. Ruth B. called me in tears, when she discovered that one of her needed medications would be costing her more than $100 per month, as it wasn’t on the plan’s formulary. With a little research, I found a plan that would cover her medication. The monthly cost of the plan would normally be $55 per month, but as she did qualify for Medi-Cal, the plan would only cost her about $15 per month, and her medication would cost only $3.10 to refill. One of the interesting facts about the law is that Medi-Medi people may change prescription plans as needed. So, Ruth did not have to wait until the annual enrollment period (Oct. 15 to Dec. 7) like the rest of us. If you do not have a low enough income to qualify for Medi-Cal, you may still qualify for a federal program called “Extra Help.” This program helps millions of Medicare recipients reduce their prescription costs to a very manageable amount.
