Honor Flight a national network Michael Batelaan Ker River Courier The Honor Flight NetworkTM program began in May of 2005 when physician assistant, private pilot, and Retired Air Force Captain Earl Morse discovered World War II veterans were physically or financially unable to visit the World War II Memorial, which was built in their honor, in Washington D.C. Morse pioneered the creation of a volunteer network of pilots that, as of their seventh year in 2011, have safely transported over 81,000 World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans to visit their memorial site absolutely free of charge. Over sixteen million men and women served in World War II and less than two million are alive and they are dying at the rate of 1000 every day. The Honor Flight Network continues to do whatever it takes to help our veterans achieve their dreams of visiting the war memorials in Washington D.C. The National Organization of Honor Flights has 113 Flight programs (referredto as “Hubs”in 34 states, four in California. With the help of hard working and passionate individuals, Kern County made that count 114. For more information on the program, Honor Flight Kern County has a FaceBook page or on the Internet see honorflight.org. people

2 Vets take flight of honor 4 6 8 Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier
Plan for the week ahead using the Courier Calendar.
Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier
Four Kern River Valley WWII Veterans assembled on the early morning of November 13, at the Meadows Field William Thomas Terminal at 5:15 a.m. for what could be the trip of a lifetime for the group of four men who Mel Wayne nicknamed “The Valley Four.” They are part of the Honor Flight Kern County which was bound for Washington D.C. Ninety WWII veterans were on this flight, as well as 65 Guardians. Four Kern Valley veterans, Mel Wayne, Joseph Scotti, Arthur Rodriguez and James Ash were among those veterans going to visit the World War II memorial. Honor Flight Network Kern County has the goal of sending all 4,000 of Kern County’s WWII veterans to see the Washington D.C. war memorials. As the plane deaprted, the Airport Fire Department assembled on the field with their lights going, and the fired their water cannons to form an arch over the departing veterans. The first Honor Flight Kern County took off on May 25, this year with twenty-two veterans ranging in age from 86 to 101 and included Wofford Heights resident George Hupp and two other vets from the

Valley. When the Vets arrived in Washington D.C. they got a police escort to and a private tour and lunch at the Capital with personal escort Congressman Kevin McCarthy. There is no cost to the Veteran. Honor Flight pays for their flight, hotel, meals, bus, tours, shirt and disposable cameras. They even pay for a hotel room the night before a flight and the night they return. Joseph Scotti of Wofford Heights, 86 years old, joined the
Army in 1942 at the age of 18. He served in the Phillipines. After Japan surrendered, he went to Japan as part of the Occupational Forces, and lived in Japan for three years. He was discharged as a Corporal in 1945. Mel Wayne of Wofford Heights, age 85, is nicknamed “Melody Mel.” He joined the Navy at 17 and served in the Navy for three years on a repair landing ship out of Baltimore as a Storekeeper First Class. After the ship was lost in the war, the Marines took
Kern Valley Honor Flight contacts Gary and Karen Zuber with Congressman Kevin McCarthy.
Local flight attendants Gary and Karen Zuber of Mtn. Mesa are the Kern Valley contacts for the Honor Flight. They assist the veterans and their guardians in submitting their applications, raising public awareness and organizing local fundraising events. Karen Zuber said, “It is not often that the Kern Valley gets to participate in a national program.” They are actively seeking out all of the veterans in the Kern Valley so all have the opportunity to take this flight. Gary Zuber said he spent a lot of time making phone calls. “It was good putting faces to the names. The whole experience was amazing.” Gary and Karen hope to send every Kern Valley WWII veteran on this trip. Contact them at 760379-2109 to refer a vet to the program.

him in and he became a Marine. When he was discharged from the Navy, he reenlisted as a Marine at the rank of Sargent in 1947 and returned to the States in 1950. Wayne said, “This trip was not expected. It is nice to know that people care. Its America. This is something I would never have been able to do unless I had won the Lotto.” Arthur Rodriguez of Wofford Heights, age 91, enlisted in the Navy in 1940 at the age of 19 and made it a career, discharging in December of 1970 as a Chief Petty Officer Merchant Mate. He was stationed on a Navy minesweeper combat ship later moving to a destroyer and also served in Korea. Rodriguez says that he never took shore leave, he was on a ship all the time. “The destroyer I was on was one that went into Tokyo to accept the Japanese surrender.” Rodriguez said that this trip is “something I never thought that I would see. I look forward to it and it completes the package.” James Ash of Lake Isabella, age 86, is known to most as “Jim.” Ash joined the Army Air Corps in 1944 at age 17 while still in high school and shortly after becoming an Eagle Scout. So the Army had finish high school before he started service. He finished school on his May 29

I can’t help but comment
Things I have noticed...
So many events, so little time
Sin City’s little sister
meetings have lost respect for others planning the same or that somehow some think they are more important than others. This seemingly poor planning leaves many of us having to pick and choose from many worthy events sometimes missing out in what we would have liked to attend. Another problem is that there is no one community calendar source to go to and check before planning an event. Two chambers of commerce, the radio station, Kern River Valley Revitalization (KRVR) and other independent sources, including the Kern River Courier, all of whom, attempt to do their best at providing this resource. But to no avail, activities and events continue to be planned one over the other. With no more months or days in a year, should not some of us look to other slower parts of the year to plan our events? To this let me offer up my solution to the general problem of event over booking. ‘The new Publishers Clearing House’. If its not cleared through me, the clearing house, I am unable to attend, I have already been made a better offer or you are not sending free tickets to attend, you must pick another date and time to hold your activity or event! One thing is for sure, it would make things much simpler to cover everyones event. What’s your solution? Michael Batelaan an be reached at office@kernrivercourier.com.
Dam question of the week: At the request of our readers, the Kern River Courier is publishing responses to the most frequently asked questions of the Corps of Engineers regarding the Isabella Dam safety Modification Study. Q: A:
The EIS says construction will begin in 2015, but your schedule shows construction starting in 2014. Why the difference? In 2014, we will enter the construction phase of our project. We will still have a number of procedural tasks to complete in preparation for physical construction of the selected alternative. The major components of construction would begin in 2015, as stated in the EIS. A revised, more detailed schedule will be presented once a preferred plan is identified and submitted for approval..
Tribute
Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist For the past few months we have been receiving emails from the Tropicana Casino and Hotel in Laughlin Nevada. They have been telling us how much Middleworth they missed us and if we would drop by, they would give us a special rate and other assorted goodies. Well, it had been a while since we had been there (7 years) and we were surprised that they still knew or remembered us (I think they really remembered our money, and not much of that either). So we called my wife's brother and sister in law who live in Phoenix and met them at the hotel/casino for a couple of days. Now remember, it had been 7 years since we had been to Laughlin and the Ramada Inn is now the Tropicana Lodge, and nothing inside is the same. All the slot machines that used to clunk coins into the trays have been replaced by machines that kick out only ticket stubs and they don't come out with your winnings unless you push a button. No noise they are just like the ticket stubs you get when you buy gas at a service station. You must take that stub to the cashier

Over the Kern Valley and through the calender, to all of the events we go. The spouse knows the way, to carry us to all the events to which we must show. It seems tis the season to be busy Batelaan and if you did not already know that, you haven’t been trying to attend all of the events and activities that are being offered of late. It all started the last weekend of September with some nine-plus single activities and events calendared. From fairs, to reunions, to festivals, ghost hunts and farmers markets producing more than one could possibly choose from. The first weekend of October offered up 14 more, not including attending church, community meetings or your favorite local youth sporting event . The second weekend, 12 plus events, the third weekend, 20. That’s two-zero flolks! And the fourth weekend returned back to 9. A grand total of 54 weekend activities for October, not including those scheduled during the week. November weekends are not starting out with much relief in sight ether with community events planned one on top of the other. Sometimes with overlaping times being held in the same building. It looks as if community clubs, organizations and those scheduling

for your money. That means the casino should be quiet without the coin clanking, but it is not. Now I notice that they have sound effects that scream in your ear especially at the one cent machines. Now don't let the term "one cent machine" make you think you will be playing with machines that need only a penny to play. Many of those so-called penny machines don't operate until you push the penny button to 25 cents or better. Hidden in amongst these bandits are a few that will let you bet only a penny, but you feel so chintzy that you play higher amounts! Also you find that if you want to win anything worthwhile, you have to spend lots more than one cent. Lots more!! Some of the machines are huge and one in particular has a gigantic lion that roars when you win. Or another has a gorilla that beats his chest when you win 50 cents or more. You find out that just because the slot machines don't give out money doesn't mean that money is not involved. No indeed, the machines take folding stuff. Dollars: Ones, Five, Tens and 20's which are gobbled up as fast as you put them in the money slot. It's addictive, insidious, foolish, and fun. If you like to study people, this is the place. All kinds can be seen. Bearded ladies, man on a scooter, fat people, skinny people, tall and really short ones. Yep, and there in the mix was us!

The Glory To those who fought for our freedom, in memory of my grandfather, James E. Woods. It's just so hard to express the love they carried as they fought for us all, for the stories I've been told deep in my heart they all stand tall. I feel they deserve much better than what we've given them in the past, for the life we live without their past today we wouldn't last. So please now with the life we've been given can we give credit where credit is due, let's take care of the ones that survived, let's give them a future like they've given you. Worth pondering Jack Duitsman, Pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville The LORD is King! Let the nations tremble! He sits on his throne between the cherubim. Let the whole earth quake! Psalm 99:1 (NLT) Whether the Duitsman results from the polls last Tuesday were akin to the leaning of your heart, or the opposite of what you had hoped, there is a far larger picture to be seen, and partisan politics cannot even begin to cast a shadow on the majestic view of human governance seen clearly from the pages of Scripture. From a Bible full of passages like the one quoted above are eternal truths that trump all elections: 1. The Lord is King: Wherever you find yourself geographically and whatever your political persuasion, there is One Who reigns over the affairs of humanity. This truth brings with it a certain sense of calm in the midst of whatever form of government finds its way into political power. The creed of the Church is and always has been "Jesus is Lord," and in this truth we place our eternal hope and trust. 2. Let the nations tremble: To the nation committed to living accord-
ing to principle of righteousness, there is certainly no cause for alarm contained in these words. Simply a call for humility in the realization that there is a God in heaven whose heart is linked with the affairs of humanity on earth. In the march of human history, nations and governments have been founded and overthrown, but what has remained constant is commitment from the Father's heart of love for His children to continuously work in ways that will bring individuals into right relationship with Him. 3. He sits on His throne between the cherubim: If this or any other election leaves us thinking that government has all the answers we will ever need for life, or filled with hopeless despair that people in power are forever set against our best interest, then we are desperately in need of an awakening by the Holy Spirit of God. Did the Electoral College results from last Tuesday do one thing to move the Eternal God from where He sits in rulership over human history unfolding on this earth? Of course not. Does the Father have intimate knowledge of what is happening in this and every nation on earth? Of course He does. In all that we experience The Father not only understands, but He amazingly weaves all of the events of history into a tapestry of His grace in the believer, and a continual clarion call for those yet to believe, to come find their rightful place in the congregation of those whose God is the Lord. We are to "Be anxious for nothing".

Sequoia National Forest launches new website Sequoia National Forest Supervisor, Kevin Elliott, today announced the launch of the new Sequoia website at: .fs.usda.gov/sequoia. The website uses updated technology to follow the work of the forest and connect people across the nation to government information. New national forest website technology and templates are creating a consistent look and feel across the agency, making it easier for viewers to navigate through the hundreds of National Forest sites available. "Technology is playing a bigger role than ever in forest management and the new website has plenty of resources to keep people informed about what is happening," stated Elliott. "Our new site has the information people need to plan vacations, track wildfires, and stay informed about ecological restoration plans, projects and events." The new website was designed to provide up-to-date information from the Sequoia National Forest, provide interactive maps of campgrounds, educational resources, historical archives, photos, and eventually online video travel clips. Presidential executive orders, the Freedom of Information Act, and Congressional intent for government transparency guide these efforts to build responsive web sites. The companion media support site at: forestphoto.com allow people to search, browse, and download documents, photos, videos, and audio files that would otherwise not be available due to file size or search ability. Using the Google search tool, files or assets can be found using keywords or by browsing specific categories. The new website is a work in progress that features Really Simple Syndication feeds for news releases and National Environmental Policy Act projects. RSS benefits readers who want to subscribe to immediate updates and notifications when new items are posted and delivered automatically to computers or other internet devices. By subscribing, users can easily stay up-to-date with new postings about the forest. The Home page includes general information about the Sequoia, the latest news, forest messages, current fire danger to keep people up to date. The new sidebar features include Special Places, with information on the Giant Sequoia National Monument and the most popular things to see and do throughout the Sequoia. For more information please contact Mary Chislock, Public Affairs Officer at: (559) 784-1500, mchislock@fs.fed.us, or Cody Norris, Public Affairs Specialist at: (760) 376-3781, cnorris@fs.fed.us. Black is back By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK "Men in Black 3" (PG-13) -This third installment about agents policing the secret world of spacealien immigration adds a twist with time travel -- and it's still watchable! Agent J (Will Smith) loses track of his partner, tight-lipped Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones.) The Men In Black HQ says K has been dead for more than 40 years. Agent J has to travel back in time and team up with the young K (Josh Brolin) to stop an alien assassin. Don't worry, it's better than MiB 2. Brolin's performance as a 29-year-old Tommy Lee Jones (Brolin is in his 40s) is the highlight of the movie. The villain, Boris the Animal, is played by comedian Jemaine Clement, who dons a perfectly over-the-top persona instead of his usual dry humor. It may not recapture the magic of the original, but this "threequel" is worth a watch. "ParaNorman" (PG-13) -Norman is an outsider with a bully problem and a supernatural gift. When zombies and ghosts terrorize his tiny town, the hapless citizens can turn to only one person, Norman, the weird little kid who says he speaks with the dead. With the help of his only friend, his annoying sister, a brain-dead jock and the local bully, Norman has to fight a witch's curse to save the town.
Josh Brolin,Will Smith and Tommy Lee It's a lot of fun and a lot spookier than you would expect. It's all done in 3D stop-motion animation by the same company that made the creepy "Coraline." Adults as well as young'uns will be plenty entertained, provided everyone is at least 7 years old and can handle a scary and emotionally weighty finale. "Lawless" (R) -- In the hills of Virginia, the Bondurant brothers were legendary Prohibition-era outlaws. This movie takes the facts and tries to pull out a gritty, dramatic, visually stunning crime drama. It almost succeeds. The cast is fantastic: Tom Hardy as an outlaw older brother, Jessica Chastain is a strong woman drawn to the wrong men, Gary Oldman is the infamous Floyd Banner, and Guy Pearce is the chilling federal investigator come to shut the brothers down. The film has a healthy dose of violence, matching pound for pound what it has in acting talent. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, lemon zest, paprika, celery seeds, salt, pepper, and cayenne. Season the chicken with additional salt and pepper, to taste. Arrange the chicken on the prepared baking sheet. Slather the mayonnaise mixture over the chicken. Bake until the juices run clear, about 20 to 25 minutes. Bodfish Bob’s Lemon Chicken Breasts
Bodfish Bob’s BBQ Citrus Chicken Breasts 1-1/2 cups favorite BBQ sauce 1 tbsp. Grated orange zest 1/3 cup low-sugar orange juice 6 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts In bowl, mix BBQ sauce, orange zest, and orange juice. Reserve 1/2 cup. Set aside. Pour remaining BBQ sauce mix into shallow baking dish. Add chicken, turn to evenly coat. Cover, refrigerate 30 minutes. Discard marinade. Preheat grill to medium heat. Grill chicken 12-15 minutes or until no longer pink inside. Turn and brush occasionally with reserved BBQ sauce. Bodfish Bob’s Roasted Spicy Mayonnaise Chicken Breasts 1/2 cup mayonnaise 2 lemons, zest finely grated 2 teaspoons paprika 1 teaspoon celery seeds 1 teaspoon salt, plus additional for seasoning 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus additional for seasoning Pinch cayenne pepper 4 (8-ounce) boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1/4 cup good olive oil 3 tablespoons minced garlic (9 cloves) 1/3 cup dry white wine 1 tablespoon grated lemon zest (2 lemons) 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano 1 teaspoon minced fresh thyme leaves Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 boneless chicken breasts, skin on (6 to 8 ounces each) 1 lemon Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Warm the olive oil in a small saucepan over medium-low heat, add the garlic, and cook for just 1 minute not allowing it to turn brown. Off the heat, add the white wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, oregano, thyme, and 1 teaspoon salt and pour into a 9 by 12-inch dish. Pat the chicken breasts dry and place skin side up over the sauce. Brush the chicken breasts with olive oil and sprinkle them liberally with salt and pepper. Cut the lemon in 8 wedges and tuck it among the pieces of chicken. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, depending on chicken breasts size, until done. If the chicken isn't browned enough, put it under the broiler for 2 minutes. Cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil and allow to rest for 10 minutes. Serve hot with the pan juices.

Talking About Real Estate
Things are starting to look up Matt Freeman Kern River Courier Columnist Good news, nationwide the real estate market is starting to look up. Inventories are down in certain areas and although prices are not dramatically on the rise investors and first time home Freeman buyers are starting to enter the market again driving demand up. High demand over a period of time typically means higher prices; the simple common sense laws of supply and demand truly play a huge role in all real estate markets. Locally, the Bakersfield market is starting to see these positive trends and has been over the last eight months or so. Ridgecrest is also steady because the Naval Base is being expanded so there is more need for housing. Interest rates remain very low and loans are still harder to get than the past, you really have to show the bank everything about your life but the kitchen sink and hope for the best but loans are getting done that is the good news. Locally, we have not yet seen a shortage of listing inventory. That is going to be the first indicator that the market up here is on the upswing, or at least a swing towards long term stability. There is still an 8-12 month average listing inventory on the market at any
given time, so there is no shortage of homes to buy. Certain market segments are even more saturated, manufactured homes for example are at 12-18 month inventory levels. These figures mean that basically those types of housing are staying on the market for those average time periods before either being sold or falling off the market in some other way. There are still a lot of factors that can stop or reverse our national uptick of real estate sales activity. Banks could release a bunch of foreclosure properties for sale, which temporarily drives down prices. Interest rates could jump up, causing pressure on mortgage affordability. The biggest single incident that I see that could possibly cause us to lose this little bit of ground gained is the economy. If the economy grows steadily, if jobs are created consistently, we will see a growth in the demand for homes and correspondingly prices will rise. But if this economy stays stagnant like it is, and don't believe the election hype, the economy is stagnant right now, then we are looking at a slowdown or even reversal of the small gains made. Basically, stay in real estate for the long haul, have a long term approach and be patient. Things are starting to look up. Supervisor’s office offers free spay/neuter assistance The Fabulous Fall Fix Event for Kern River Valley residents will take place on Friday, November 16th and Friday, November 30th at the Vons Parking lot located at 5610 Lake Isabella Boulevard in Lake Isabella. Interested pet owners must make an appointment with AngelDogs Foundation for the surgery. The number to contact for appointments is 1-888-504- SPAY (7729). "Responsible pet ownership, including spaying and neutering pets, is an important component for reducing the number of unwanted animals entering our shelters every year," said District 1 Supervisor Jon McQuiston. In addition, owners of spayed and neutered dogs that have proof of their rabies vaccination can also receive a free one year County license. Owners of spayed or neutered dogs that do not have a current rabies vaccination can still receive a free one year County license by stopping by the AngelDogs Foundation spay/neuter mobile clinic to purchase a Rabies vaccination for $10 and, then they will receive their free one year County license.

The cost per person is $25 each (to be collected at the door); and the menu choice is Prime Rib, Shrimp or Chicken. Attendees are encouraged to participate in honoring Erie. Gag gifts and Cards are welcome! RSVP to Robin Little (760) 376-6842 or tedrob@earthlink.net. RSVP deadline is November 24.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your work on a recent job assignment is impressive and is sure to be noticed. Meanwhile, expect to receive news about an upcoming holiday event you won't want to miss. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Saving the world one person at a time is what you were born to do. So accept it when people ask you for help, especially during the holiday season. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Now that you've resolved all doubts about an important decision, you can surprise a lot of people by defending your stand with your strong and well-reasoned arguments. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The holiday mood stirs your need to nurture everyone from the family cat to great-grandma. But don't overdo it, especially with teens, who like to feel grown up. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Enjoy basking in the warm love of family and close friends. But don't fall into a prolonged catnap yet. There's still much to do before you can put up your paws and relax. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Avoid pushing others to work as hard as you do on a common project. Instead, encourage them to do
their best, and they might well reward you with a pleasant surprise. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Like the sensible Libra you are, you no doubt started your holiday shopping already. But be careful to keep within your budget. Shop around for the best buys. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Love and friendship remain strong in your aspect over the next several days. This is a good time to develop new relationships and strengthen old ones. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A beloved family member has news that will brighten your holidays. Also expect to hear from friends who had long since moved out of your life. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Family and friends are in for a surprise when you accept the need to make a change without being talked into it. (Bet it surprised you, too -- didn't it?) AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Restoring an old friendship might not be as easy as you hoped. You might want to explore the reasons for your former buddy's reluctance to cooperate. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your partygoing activities pick up as the holiday season takes off. Enjoy your plunge into the social swim as you make new friends and renew old friendships. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Advanced Reconveyance, Inc., As Trustee, 43545 17th Street W., Ste 503, Lancaster, CA 93534, 661-9455525, Vickie Durham, Trustee Sale Officer (Published by the Kern River Courier November 2, 9 and 16, 2012) NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on the notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgages, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 661-945-5525 using the file number 12-2229. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet web site. The best way to verify the postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Family Life Center presents ‘A Christmas Trial’ Family Life Center presents a Christmas gift to the Kern River Valley. They are inviting everyone to their Christmas comedy, musical, drama presentation of A Christmas Trial, an original work written and directed by Pastor Jerry Ruff, fun for the whole family. There seems to be a debate concerning the separation of church and state. It winds up in the courtroom but an unforeseen circumstance has turned the world upside down for all of them. You will laugh, cry (or at least water-up some), and perhaps come to terms with your own Christmas story. The fun starts Nov. 30, Dec. 1 and 2 at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. Admission is free and there will be child care for children 4 years and under. There will be refreshments afterward in the gymnasium. Family Life Center is located at 20 Panorama Drive, Wofford Heights.
