Serving the Kern River & Isabella Lake Communities
This was just one of the many vintage trailers visting the Kern River Valley this past weekend. The “M” System Manufacturing Company produced trailers from 1935 to 1960.
Daylight saving time ends this Sunday, Nov. 4 at 2 a.m. The official time turns from 1:59 a.m. back to 1 a.m. Sunday morning, earning you an extra hour of sleep, and a earlier sunrise. If you want to get the correct time, you can check the official U.S. time online at www.time. gov
Classic, comfortable and cozy describes the collection of 40 vintage travel trailers that converged along the upper Kern River last weekend at Camp James in Kernville. As I strolled through the park-like campground, a charmingly restored red and white art deco style trailer cought my eye. Danny Myers, and his wife Donna, owners
of the 1951 ‘M’ System trailer came out to chat. When asked “why the interest in old trailers?”, Myers responded “we’re old car guys!”. He then went on to add how he and several old buddies from Orange County with a mutual interest in classic cars, expanded their hobby four years ago to include the vintage trailers. “We recieved lots of thumbs-up’ from passing vehicles;” Meyers remarked, referring to
the group as they caravaned their way up to the Kern Valley. The club’s name is ‘When I’m 64’ taking after the popular Beatles song. The 100 plus participants at this event camped in a wide assortment of models with style names such as, ‘Canned Ham’ and ‘Breadloaf’. Some of the trailers had doors on either side, which are playfully referred to as “boyfriend” doors. Many of the trailers

The Draft EIS is the primary source for detailed affected environment and environmental impact information for the proposed Isabella Lake DSM Project. Following release of the Draft EIS for public comment, the Corps selected Alternative Plan 4 from the Draft EIS as the "Preferred Alternative". The preferred alternative would alter the Isabella Dams and Spillway, construct new structures and facilities, and perform numerous associated support actions over an anticipated multi-year construction period. The Corps anticipates issuing a Record of Decision following filing and public distribution of the Final

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service - Sequoia National Forest, has released the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Isabella Dam Safety Modification Study for review and comment. The reservoir is impounded by two earthen dams on the Kern River and Hot Springs Valley. Today, Isabella Reservoir and its dams help reduce flood risk for Bakersfield and the surrounding region, and are a primary water source for water users throughout Kern County. The Isabella Dam Safety Modification Project looks to address seepage, seismic and overtopping risks identified with Isabella Lake's main and auxiliary dams to reduce the risk of dam

were painstakingly restored to their original pristine condition, both inside and out. A homey warmth could be felt upon entering the wood paneled interiors of the trailers, adding to their charm. Had I been fortunate enough to witness the procession of these vintage trailers going by, I would have given them a wide berth, and I too, would have given them a big thumbs-up.”

Narrow is the path Jack Duitsman, Pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it. Matthew 7:14 Matthew chapter 7 is the tail end of a three Duitsman chapter narrative known as The Sermon On The Mount, which details the heart of the Father through the teaching of Jesus. Sitting on a Galilean hillside with many followers gathered around, the Savior unpacks the heart of the Father in a most remarkable way. Without refuting any of the teaching of the Old Testament, the Lord shed light on how His disciples might find life through the Scriptures rather than seeing the Bible as an unbearable yoke of laws impossible to live under. Yet into this scenario is proclaimed the above passage regarding the difficulty with which any of this Kingdom life was possible, and it would seem that not even Jesus could find a way around the ultimate reality of a vindictive and spiteful God Who would rather spend eternity alone than welcome a ragged bunch of unworthy malcontents to share heaven with
Him. Eternity must be left to the Father, and our eternal hope must always and forever be a simple trust in His goodness and grace. Any who don't see this narrow and hard to find way to life as the sad truth of the natural bent of our hearts away from holy living are not looking honestly at our fallen condition. Yet in Jesus Christ, this natural disposition toward the wide way of destruction is answered to, and we can become the "pure in heart" who will "see God." (Matthew 5:8) We will indeed be forever indebted to the One who has worked this in us, and must never, not ever, rely on our own disposition to find this narrow way on our own. In our own strength, our groping for the way, false starting toward the gate leading to life, and blind pursuit of personal endeavors believed to lead to Godliness are always epic failures. Indeed the term "few" referring to those who find their way to life might be an overstatement of eternal proportions, unless those "few" are the intrepid and wise souls who in humility confess their utter dependence upon the Lord of Love to lead them through into the way of life. In such humility then let us confess our eternal dependence upon the Father Who loves us, Who sent Jesus to save us, and Who has given us the Holy Spirit as a pledge to accomplish this eternal work in us as we live before Him. The narrow way has been found!

Recreation fees waived for Veterans holiday The U.S. Forest Service is waiving fees at most of its day-use recreation sites over the Veterans Day holiday weekend, Nov. 10-12. Entrance to National Parks will be free on that weekend as well. The fee waivers are offered in cooperation with other federal agencies under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act. Day-use fees will be waived at all standard amenity fee sites operated by the Forest Service. Concessionaire operated day-use sites may be included if the permit holder wishes to participate. "This is our way of saying thanks to the brave men and women - past and present - who put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe at home," said U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell. "We encourage veterans, their families and all visitors to take time out over the holiday weekend to enjoy the benefits that nature provides at forests and grasslands throughout the country."
Forest Service Preparing for Winter Conditions Forest Service personnel have begun to winterize recreational areas as higher elevations experience freezing temperatures. Water systems have been shut off at the Blackrock Trailhead, Fish Creek and Horse Meadow Campgrounds, as well as, Beach and Cannell Meadow Public Pastures. The water systems at Troy and Kennedy Meadows Campgrounds will be shut off this week. These areas will remain open for use. The Blackrock Visitor Information Station, on the Kern Plateau, is scheduled to close for the winter on Saturday, November 10th. The Lake Isabella and Kernville Ranger Stations will remain open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through the winter. Be advised woodcutting season will end November 30, 2012. Permits are still available. *Winter Advisory* Use caution when traveling through the forest this time of year. Weather and road conditions can change rapidly at any elevation. Watch for icy road patches. Make sure you have a full tank of gas, tire chains, warm clothing, blanket(s), matches, food and water. Remember to tell someone where you will be going. Expect district roads and trails to close after the first significant winter storm. For further information, please contact the Lake Isabella Ranger Station at (760) 379-5646 or the Kernville Ranger Station at (760) 376-3781.

Courier Antler, Fin & Feather Report
Junior hunters gain experience Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier Columnist On November 17 and 18, the Fish and Game Club will hold its 25th annual Junior Pheasant hunt, co-sponsored by the Fish and Game Habitat Club, California Dept. of Fish and Game, the U.S. Forest Service, Mencarini and funded by the NRA Foundation. The event will be held on the shores of Lake Isabella at Hanning Flat Recreational area. The hunt is free and will be open to all young sportspersons possessing a California Junior hunting license (requires passing a special hunting and safety class). A parent or guardian will accompany each junior hunter in his or her group. Dogs and their handlers will be available for guiding and assisting these young hunters through the sagebrush anticipating the rush of a rooster pheasant exploding from under foot. All involved should have a memorable time. In an event such as a junior pheasant hunt like this, these youngsters have the opportunity to experience the workings of a bird dog, the safe handling of a firearm, and how to interact with other hunters in real time. It is also an ideal way to show junior hunters the rewards of bird hunting, as they experience the multicolored birds with their
short wings, long tail feathers and the loud clucking when flushed. This two day event will be divided into four independent hunts. Each hunt will limited to 30 junior hunters. All groups will be overseen by a game warden during each hunt. Having a life experience is an important goal at this event, but safety is number one along with learning to be a true sportsperson. Again this year is the local gun range it is inviting any junior hunter to come and get some wing shooting practice in before the hunt. The gun club will provide experts in the handling of shotguns and their safety. The gun club will also provide the clay targets and will throw the clays in a similar flight pattern of the pheasant. You only need to bring your own shotgun, and shells as no guns or ammo will be furnished. The Fish and Game Habitat Club is a well respected group of hard working volunteers who give their time unselfishly to promote several events every year dedicated to the young sportsperson. Applications for junior hunters, dogs and their handlers will be accepted until November 17. For any and all information please call 760-376-3178 or email fishandgameclub@yahoo.com Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and an avid fisherman. Not your typical princess By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK "Brave" (PG) -- Pixar's latest release goes into a mythical Scottish setting to tell the story of a headstrong, red-haired lass. Merida (voiced by Kelly MacDonald), is a princess who doesn't want to do the whole princess thing. Merida tries to thwart her own arranged marriage. When that doesn't work, she tries to use dangerous magic to change her fate. While "Brave" has its strong points, it falls short of Pixar's greatest hits. The pacing can get on your nerves, for example. The tone can get a little dark. It's not enough to scare the kiddos or keep them from enjoying the tale. It's a pleasant departure from the typical princess story with a good helping of slapstick comedy and amazing visuals. "Savages" (R) -- Oliver Stone directs this summertime crime epic about a trio of pretty, young marijuana moguls who go to war with the big bad Baja Cartel. Chon (Taylor Kitsch, short-haired handsome dude) and Ben (Aaron Johnson, long-haired handsome dude) are living large in Laguna Beach with their shared squeeze, Ophelia (Blake Lively, vacant-looking blonde). Brutal drug lord, Elena (Selma Hayek) wants a piece of their pot profits, so she sends in her min-
Aaron Johnson in “Savages” ion, Lado (Benicio Del Toro.) Stone knows how to keep you watching. Hayek's evil narco-empress is chilling and also very hot. However, Lively was given voice-over duty, and her voice and the things she says soon become tiresome. You may wish you didn't want to keep watching. "The Watch" (PG-13) -- Four suburban guys (Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade) looking for an excuse to hang out form a neighborhood watch and wind up in a showdown with alien invaders. It's a simply silly concept that could pass or fail based on the comedic riffing of the stars. It's a fail. The jokes are lazy, the script is tedious. Whether it was the acting or the direction, the funny men just aren't at their best. There's no room for wit or originality to blossom when the script is overflowing with anatomy jokes. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Health Insurance Matters
Bits and pieces Harry P. Thal Kern River Courier Columnist All week long, every week, I think of little tidbits that I want to pass on to the world, but forget some, and others are too small to develop into the allotted space. One of my Thal favorite gripes is the person who for whatever reason can't find their health insurance card. I often wonder what the paramedics do when they have a person for which they can't find insurance information. Most likely, they go to the nearest emergency room, even if it is at county hospital. Now, if they knew this person was well insured, perhaps they'd go to a top medical center, if both were nearby. The solution: If everybody would gather up their insurance cards and put them directly behind your driver's license in your billfold, you would know where to look, as well as emergency personnel. And while on the subject, how about emptying your wallet of all the cards and put them on the glass of a photo copier. Then turn them all over and copy the backs. This copy now goes into a safe place at home. If your wallet is lost or stolen, you can reference the page to stop the
cards, etc. And since you're making copies, take the important papers, like your insurance information and provide your spouse, family member or trusted close friend, so if you are in trouble they can advise. I have written about this before, but it really is bugging me. Jane called today. She says I should leave her on her Medicare Prescription plan because she likes it and they have been covering her medication very well. She says her medication hasn't changed. "But Jane", I countered, 'you may not have changed, but the benefits of your plan may have". Many drugs have been removed from the plans, or have restrictions like "Prior Authorization" added to them. Just because it was good in 2012 doesn't mean it will be the same plan in 2013. Also, competition has driven the market to have lower monthly premiums and lower or no deductibles. This past year I was paying $7.00 per prescription at the Drug Store in Kernville. Next year my co-pay for the same generic drugs will be $0. Can't beat that. Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker (0621106) and a member of the Society of Certified Senior Advisors. Salome’s Stars ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your work requires increased effort during the next few days. But it all will pay off down the line. Things ease up in time for weekend fun with family and/or friends. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your genuine concern for others could prompt you to promise more than you can deliver. It's best to modify your plans now, before you wind up overcommitted later. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A situation that seems simple at first glance needs a more thorough assessment before you give it your OK. Dig deeper for information that might be hidden from view. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Careful: Right now, things might not be quite what they appear. Even the intuitive Crab could misread the signs. Get some solid facts before you act on your suspicions. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your energy levels are high, allowing you to complete those unfinished tasks before you take on a new project. A social invitation could come from an unlikely source. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might think you're helping, but unless you're asked for a critique, don't give it. If you are asked, watch what you say. Your words should be helpful, not hurtful.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your attempt at mediating disputes might meet some opposition at first. But once you're shown to be fair and impartial, resistance soon gives way to cooperation. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Go ahead. Reward yourself for helping settle a disturbing workplace situation. On another note: A personal relationship might be moving to a higher level. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A sudden change of heart by a colleague might create some momentary uncertainty. But stay with your original decision and, if necessary, defend it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Rely on a combination of your sharp instincts along with some really intense information-gathering to help you make a possibly life-changing decision. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Instead of worrying if that new person in your life will stay or leave, spend all that energy on strengthening your relationship so it becomes walk-out resistant. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A sudden financial dry spell could reduce your cash flow almost to a trickle. But by conserving more and spending less, you'll get through the crunch in good shape. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on the notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgages, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 661-945-5525 using the file number 12-2228. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet web site. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 661-945-5525 using the file number 12-2221. Information about post-
ponements that are very short in duration or that occur close to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet web site. The best way to verify the postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF GAY ANNE KAPANOSKE aka GAY A.
