Why do leaves change color in the fall? When leaves appear green, it is because they contain an abundance of chlorophyll. There is so much chlorophyll in an active leaf that the green masks other pigment colors. Light regulates chlorophyll production, so as autumn days grow shorter, less chlorophyll is produced. The decomposition rate of chloro-

phyll remains constant, so the green color starts to fade from leaves. At the same time, surging sugar concentrations cause increased production of anthocyanin pigments. Leaves containing primarily anthocyanins will appear red. Carotenoids are another class of pigments found in some leaves. Carotenoid production is not dependent on light, so levels aren't diminished by shortened days.
Carotenoids can be orange, yellow or red, but most of these pigments found in leaves are yellow. Leaves with good amounts of both anthocyanins and carotenoids will appear orange. Leaves with carotenoids but little or no anthocyanin will appear yellow. In the absence of these pigments, other plant chemicals also can affect leaf color. An example includes tannins, which are responsible for the
brownish color of some oak leaves. Temperature affects the rate of chemical reactions, including those in leaves, so it plays a part in leaf color. However, it's mainly light levels that are responsible for fall foliage colors. Sunny autumn days are needed for the brightest color displays, since anthocyanins require light. Overcast days will lead to more yellows and browns. And now you know.

Traffic & Safety STOP Kern Valley traffic statistics for October 2013 Benjamin Starkey, California Highway Patrol
Safety tip: Safe Driving Winter weather is coming to the Kern River Valley. As the weather worsens, the likelihood for traffic collisions rises. Wet weather makes for dangerous roadway conditions. This winter season the law enforcement in the Kern River Valley want everyone to be as safe as possible. If you find yourself driving in the rain or snow, please slow down. When the roads are slick, stopping your vehicle becomes harder and you are more likely to go off the roadway. Please buckle up to ensure that if your vehicle does leave the roadway, you will be as secure as possible. When driving through the townships of the Kern River Valley, please watch for bicycle and pedestrian traffic. We want a fatality free winter and ask all drivers this winter season to be alert and attentive to their surroundings, watch your speed and buckle up. We also want to wish everybody a safe and happy holiday season.

Lack of follow-up of great concern I recently met with a deputy while helping a friend with his identity theft/fraud case. The deputy was kind, caring and helpful. Since our meeting I've called the deputy five times in two weeks stating that I have new information and to please call me. My requests have been ignored. He never called me back, showing, I feel, a complete lack of concern for the victim, and the case he was assigned to. I was hopeful, now I am disappointed and discouraged. On TV, a fingerprint catches the bad guy. But not in the Kern River Valley. Twenty mailboxes, including my own, were opened and emptied on November first, payday for many. A neighbor miles away also had mail theft. He had a $300 check stolen and cashed. I later learned the whole valley has had mail theft and the post office even sent out notices. Twenty mailboxes meant twenty chances of getting the thieves' fingerprints and pictures of the crime scene. The request was denied. Since then I have spoken to people who had reported a theft and requested fingerprints be taken and had their request denied. If you have ever asked the Sheriff Department for help and got it, but were ignored later on the follow-up of your case, please write to the newspaper editor and let him know how disappointed you were. Sincerely, Connie Cryts Weldon The Kern River Courier welcomes your letters to the editor that are original, not previously published pertaining to local issues and events or those that affect our area. For complete details see our letter polices on page 2.

The other day while chatting with one of the younger generation, I noticed a strange chirp coming from his pocket. "What Middleworth was that?" I asked. The youngster said, "it means I have a text message from someone I know. "Here I'll show you how it looks." And there on this tiny screen of this little cell phone was a typed message. I couldn't help but notice that there were a lot of code words interspersed throughout the written words of the message. "What are those ?" I asked. "Well, he said, because of the time factor when we send messages to each other, it speeds things up when you use code words for parts of the typed words. For instance, he went on to say, here are a few of the common ones that everyone uses. BF means best friend (a way of telling the person you're texting to that you and they are best friends). Some of the other commonly used code words are....BRB (be right back!) HAND (have a nice day!) LMK (let me know!) NAGI (not a good idea!) NMU? (not much ,you?) WYCM (will you call me?) DWBH (don't worry be happy!) B/C ( because!) FWIW (for what it's worth!) And so on. I checked Google and it told me that there are more than 100 code
words in common use. "But wait," I said to myself. There are no senior code words that would enhance and help the senior citizens text messages that us old folks could send, receive and understand. Here are just a few that could thrust us geezers into the 21st century and spice up our texting at the same time. For instance....LMDO (laughing my dentures off!) HGBM (had good bowel movement!) GGPBL (gotta go pacemaker battery low!) FWIW (forgot where I was!) GHA (got heartburn again!) LOL (living on Lipitor!) WAITT? (who am I talking to?) TWOTT (texting while on the toilet!) BYOT (bring your own teeth!) DWI (driving while incontinent!), ATD (at the doctor!) As you can see with just a little imagination you could take even the few code words from above and show everyone that we are hip and swimming into the mainstream! Example: Sorry I wasn't home I was ATD. He said it's ok for me to DWI and when I got home it was also OK for me to TWOTT. The joke you sent me caused me to LMDO and I FWIW. For a minute now I'm LOL. I've GHA and have FWIW and now I wonder WAITT? LSMFT. (Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco!) I threw that one in to see if you are paying attention! Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.

Color Changes Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist My neighbor on the hill in Wofford Heights has a couple of strikingly scarlet trees growing in front of her house! Their color changed from a fairly ordiSchlensker nary green during the summer to an absolutely magnificent shade of red in the fall, comparable to the hue of those so-called "burning bushes." What a great fall color! Last week we took a family outing to the upper Kern River, beyond Kernville, and were dazzled by the aspens, ablaze with their brilliant yellow leaves! The trees' fall colors never cease to amaze me with their beauty. I am reminded of the color change in people, so-to-speak, which is effected when they come to know and trust in Jesus. They, like every naturally born human being since Adam and Eve, originate looking very dark, ashen gray - whatever color best fits death. The apostle Paul says to the people of the church in Ephesus and to people in our day as well, in Ephesians 2:1, "you were dead in your trespasses and sins." King David acknowledged the tainting of his origin, and implied the similar condition of us all (see "Pre-existing Condition" in the 9/20 Courier) when he said, "Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me" (Psalm 51:5). Thank heavens both of those sen-
tences are in the past tense! Those are former condition for all believers in Jesus, the Christ. That grayness of death is changed to blood red when a person begins to trust Jesus. Peter in the first chapter of his first letter describes coming to faith as being "sprinkled with [Jesus'] blood." Now that's a gory-sounding figure of speech, but that's important, because, as the apostle John writes, "the blood of Jesus [God's] Son cleanses us from all sin" (1 John 1:7). And that blood does for believers in Jesus an absolutely awesome thing; Paul says later in Ephesians 2, "But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ." People, who were far from God and ashen-looking are now, through blood-bathing, cleaned up and brought into His presence. However people washed in Jesus blood don't turn out red, but rather white! The apostle John in Revelation 7:14 describes the saints, who have come into a saving relationship with Jesus, as people, who "have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." And they are the ones streaming into the eternally glorious environs of heaven. As colorful as God's creation in this world can be, especially in the fall, the colors of the new creation in the new Eden will be orders of magnitude more magnificent!
Dan Schlensker is pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lake Isabella.

Antler, Fin & Feather Report
Musically talented angler Mike Mencarini Courier Columnist In the past couple of years I have featured a very good friend of mine on several occasions in my column. On secMencarini cond thought, I don't think friend quite covers him. He is definitely more like family. Any how, he is an avid bass angler who knows Isabella as good as anybody who fishes it regularly. James sometime known as the "Fishing Father" is a part time resident of Wofford Heights and a full time Pastor of a large congregation in Bakersfield. I have a point and I'll get to it. James, his lovely wife Lydia and one of their sons Jim will be featured guests Sunday night November 24 at the Foursquare Church on Panorama and
Sycamore in Wofford Heights. This is one of the most down to earth and musically talented families you have never heard. I thought it would be nice to shed some light on one of our resident families who loves our lake and our community. I could go on and on about their accomplishments but lets just say you will not be disappointed. James may even give you a fishing tip if you ask him. I know it's chilly after the sun goes down but if you can dress warm and make a small camp fire to help light the shoreline, the night time catfish bite is very good. Last week there were some large blue channel cats caught in the French Gulch area, one weighing in at 25 pounds. Please use good judgment when making any fire; even one next to water. Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and avid fisherman.

Pick of the Week “The Wolverine” (PG-13) — Hugh Jackman’s growly superhero gets another solo adventure -- this time he’s off to Japan to settle old scores and fight ninjas. The story begins after "X-Men III," with Wolverine getting some alone time in the wilderness to grieve the loss of Jean Grey in the last movie. Wolverine is summoned to Japan under mysterious circumstances. Before long, there is a sultry woman (Tao Okamoto) asking for Wolverine’s protection while plots thicken and arrows fly. This adventure requires more emotional weight from Jackman’s Wolverine -- he’s recovering from heartbreak while he’s a stranger in a strange land. There also is all of the hard-to-follow comic-book stuff going on, like the reptilian lady who shows up to steal Wolverine’s healing power. In the end, the Wolverine has enough action and enough style to warrant a rental from anyone who had fun at the "XMen" movies. “The Smurfs” (PG) — The little blue peasants of Smurf Village make another excursion into the world of live-action people -yielding few laughs and a lot of irritation. The evil wizard, Gargamel (Hank Azaria), has the usual plan of kidnapping a smurf
Hugh Jackman in "The Wolverine"
so he can harvest whatever it is that he wants from them. Smurfette (voiced by pop star Katy Perry) is taken prisoner by some gray anti-smurfs created by Gargamel. Expect 90 minutes of joyless slapstick and the word “Smurf” wedged into every phrase. “Good Ol’ Freda” (PG) — The Beatles were a band for 10 years, yet Freda Kelly of Liverpool was their secretary for 11 years. SheÕs kept quiet for a long time -- no juicy tell-all book, no scathing interviews -- and now she shares her story in this documentary. KellyÕs not out to reveal scandalous details or suggest any romance she may have had with any of the musicians, she says, ÒthatÕs private.Ó Instead, itÕs a cozy, endearing account from a grandmother who spent her youth working for the hardest-working band of the '60s. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Trim all fat off meat. Cut steak into 4 inch strips. The steak should be about 1/2 inch thick. It's easier to cut meat partially frozen. Pound meat lightly, you don't want it too thin. Add all ingredients in a large bowl. Mix well. Cover and refrigerate overnight (8 hrs). Line cookie sheets with tin foil.Place steak strips on sheets, don't overlap meat. Set oven at lowest temperature. (150175°F). Bake six hours, turning after three hours.Jerky is done when meat is dried out, depending on your oven. Bodfish Bob’s Creamed Tacos 1 lb. lean ground beef (I use 1-1/2 lbs.) 1 can (10 oz.) enchilada sauce 1 can (15 oz.) stewed tomatoes 1 small can (5 oz.) evaporated milk 1 dozen corn tortillas Cheddar cheese, shredded Brown hamburger; drain. Add enchilada sauce, tomatoes and milk and heat together. Layer 6 tortillas in bottom of greased 9x13 inch baking pan. Spoon half of the hamburger mixture over the tortillas. Repeat layers and top with as much shredded cheese as desired. Bake at 375 for 30 minutes until hot. Visit Bodfish Bob on the Internet at www.bodfishbob.com or email him at bodfishbob@hotmail.com.

Health Insurance Matters
The Clock Keeps Ticking Harry P. Thal Courier Columnist This time of the year, many people compare the hectic goings on in my office to the tax preparer, rushing towards deadlines. The tax accountant Thal can always request an extension but not so with health insurance. Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period ends December 7, less than two weeks from today. While the taxes need to be postmarked by the deadline, the Medicare applications must be at the insurance company by the deadline. Each year, my fax machine gets a workout on December 7, the deadline is for any changes to either the Medicare Advantage HMO or the Medicare Part D prescription benefit. People with Medicare Supplement plans are not subject to this deadline, but can change plans anytime, if they can medically qualify for a new supplement, or can change to an equal or lesser plan for 30 days following their birthday. Also, those who also have Medi-Cal are able to make changes year round. This year, the first year of the Individual Mandate of the Affordable Care Act aka ObamaCare, the enrollment period, without penalty has been extended to March 31. However, for the millions of people who are required to replace their
current insurance with an ACA qualified plan must do so by December 15, the last day to receive a January 1 effective date. Insurance companies, attempting to keep as much of their business as possible, are are trying to compare as close as possible, the benefits of your current plan to the benefits of the new ACA compliant plans. As the ACA plans have many richer, mandated benefits, require lower deductibles, as well as a different fee structure for families, the monthly cost of these plans is greater than the current plans. Many consumers will find that seeking coverage through the Covered California exchange or from other plans offered by their current company or other companies will help control the cost for their family. Licensed and Certified insurance agents are available to assist in seeking the best value for your health insurance needs. They never charge a fee. Your costs are the same whether you use the services of an agent or do it on your own. Several area agents are certified and work with all the insurance companies, and can offer assistance in getting the best value for your health insurance dollar. Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker in California (0621106) He is pastpresident of the Kern Association of Health Underwriters. Super Crossword
ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) Decisions involving your finances might seem to be foolproof. But they could have underlying risks you should know about. Don't act on anything until all the facts are in. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You're attracted to a situation that appeals to your Bovine intellect. And that's good. But don't neglect your passionate side when romance comes calling later in the week. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A recent development enhances that special relationship. Spending more time together also helps make the bonding process stronger. Expect news about a possible career change. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A suspicious situation should be dealt with before it leads to serious problems. Get all the facts needed to resolve it. Then refocus your energies on those tasks that need your attention. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Try to be more open-minded in working toward a resolution of that standoff between yourself and a colleague or family member. A little flexibility now could work to your advantage later. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) You might feel a bit threatened by a proposed workplace change. The best way to deal with it is to ask questions. You'll find that those involved will be happy to provide you with the facts.
LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Feeling alone in a crowd during the early part of the week is an unsettling emotion. But your spirits soon perk up, putting you into the right mood to start making holiday plans. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) A pesky problem should be dealt with immediately so you can put your time and effort into something more important. Someone from your past could have significant news for you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) High-energy aspects dominate, both on the job and at home. Use this time to put some long-range plans into operation. Things level off later in the week. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Even the usually gregarious Goat might feel overwhelmed by a flurry of activities. Be patient. Things soon return to your normal social routine. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Career choices that seem too confusing to deal with at this point probably are. More information would help uncomplicate them. On the personal side, a friend might need your advice. PISCES (Feb. 19 to Mar. 20) Your Piscean imagination is stimulated by possibilities you see in a new opportunity. But keep those ideas to yourself until you feel ready to translate them into a workable format.

Advanced Reconveyance, Inc., As Trustee, 43545 17th Street W., Ste 503, Lancaster, CA 93534, 661-945-5525, Vickie Durham, Trustee Sale Officer NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on the notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgages, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 661-945-5525 using the file number 13-2272. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet web site. The best way to verify the postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Assemblywoman Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) is hosting a forum to help small businesses connect with contracts offered by government agencies on Friday, December 6th at 7:30 a.m. The event will feature panels on the government contracting and procurement process and an accreditation workshop so businesses can sign up to bid on contracts with the state government as well as exhibitor booths. There is no charge for attendance. "Kern County small businesses have the skills and expertise to efficiently provide goods and services to government agencies and these agencies buy almost everything we produce here in Kern County. I want to make sure small businesses know what opportunities are available to them," said Grove. The event will be held at Hodel's, Kern Room, 5917 Knudsen Drive, Bakersfield. RSVP is mandatory due to limited space. To RSVP call 66-395-2995 or email Assemblymember.Grove@assembly.ca.gov

Hoffmann Hospice to host Light Up a Life ceremony Hoffmann Hospice will hold its annual Light Up a Life Ceremony on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m. at Circle Park/Big Blue Bear located at 101 Piute Drive. This is a very special, memorable community event that provides an opportunity to celebrate those individuals who have enriched our lives. Hoffmann Hospice’s Light Up a Life ceremony is a tree lighting tradition where we gather together and commemorate those we love by illuminating a tree with lights, each light symbolizing an individual who has touched the life of another. Hoffmann invites the public to share in this event by purchasing individual “lights” for $10 each in honor of someone living, or in memory of a friend or loved one who has passed. There is no charge to attend. The event includes a reading of all the names represented by the lights, as well as a unique candle lighting custom involving our staff and guests. To pre-purchase a light or for more information, call 661-410-1010. Hoffmann Hospice is located at 6040-D Lake Isabella Blvd.
