A history of Thanksgiving

PRESORTED Kernville Standard U.S. Postage PAID Permit 25
www.kernrivercourier.com Vol. 8 No. 42
We pause to count our blessings In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn't until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November. In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers-an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their faith and other individuals lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the New World. After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth. For more than two c e n t u r i e s , “Thanksgiving Days” were celebrated by individual colonies and states, on different days. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held the final Thursday of November.

Michael Batelann Kern River Courier A new bookmobile was dedicated to the Kern River Valley last Friday morning at the Kern County Library's Kern River Valley Branch in a celebration that included local, county and federal representatives and an opportunity for the public to see and tour the new vehicle first hand. On hand were Sherry Gomez, Deputy Director of Libraries for Kern County, First District Supervisor Jon McQuiston, Michael L. Carnes, Area Director Rural Development, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Peggy Hickey, Kern River Valley Branch and Bookmobile Supervisor. The Kern County Library can now not only expand their library materials and services to rural valley residents, but with broadband capacity in the bookmobile, job seekers will also have access to the necessary tools to help with job searches and resume building. George and the Heartpacer
Valley hospital needs your support I’m asking all Kern Valley residents to take a little time to contact our senators and congress people, both state and federal, regarding Governor Brown’s budget proposal to cut reimbursement rates for Skilled Nursing Facilities, (SNFs). These funds are Medicare and Medicaid (federal) but are distributed by the state through Medi-Cal. Our hospital has a 70-bed Skilled Nursing Facility. The governor’s budget calls for rolling back reimbursement rates to 10 percent below ’08 rates for SNFs. This will result in reductions of more than 30 percent. Our hospital district cannot afford this. If this is allowed to happen, I fear for the district’s more than 300 local employees and their families. I fear the greater economic impact on the entire valley. Our hospital is truly “critical access.” We live in a geographically isolated area. As you know, with landslides, weather, even accidents, access in and out of the valley can be prevented or inhibited. I fear for the health and even survival of our family members, friends and neighbors if we allow the doors of our hospital to be closed. Please forward to all of your Kern Valley associates, friends and loved ones. The future of our hospital depends on you. Middleworth suffering forgetfulness? I have been a fan of Rod Middleworth’s column for a long while. Sometimes I suspected, however, that from time to time he engaged in a little “romancing of the truth.” This seemed apparent to me when reading a column earlier this month. Rod writes about his youth and about riding his bike from their San Fernando Valley home to Macy’ in downtown Los Angeles. At the time Rod was a youngster there was no Macy’s in Los Angeles. In fact, I don’t believe there were any Macy’s in the west. They were an East Coast chain. Maybe it was really J.C. Penney or Sears. Robert S. Allen Santa Fe Springs, CA Editor’s note: Good catch. In consulting with Rod, most likely the store was the May Co.

Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist Friday of last week I had the privilege of increasing my well being by insertion of a heart pacemaker into my chest. Let me tell you about part of that day. It started at 7 a.m. Middleworth with an activity called preop, where they ready you for the operation. The preop lasted almost 2 hours while the actual operation only an hour. When I was finally rolled into the ice box they call surgery I was assured by everyone present that this operation was pretty common and if I had any concerns, forget them. “We'll take good care of you,” they said, and then someone asked if I had a preference for music. I told them I liked Country and almost instantly over the operating room speaker system came the rich voice of country singer George Strait. I was really impressed!! I silently hoped that everything else would work as well. (Especially the heartpacer!). As they were putting a surgical cover over my face and upper body, I asked the anesthesiologist how soon after the procedure I would awaken. "Awaken?" she laughed, "you won't be asleep, you will be conscious throughout the operation". I was appalled, having thought I would be put under

sedation and would wake with the operation a done deed. "Don'tworry" she said "I am giving you something that will calm your nerves and something else that will mask any pain. You will be able to talk with the surgeon and anyone else that wants to chime in." I noticed 4 or 5 gowned staff present, whose jobs went unknown, but I do remember casually talking with the surgeon, He said "hello" and that this would be painless and quick. I think I said "sounds good to me Dr B". And though I wasn't put to sleep, much of the operation went by fuzzily and I think I was further under sedation than I realized. Finally someone said, "It's all over and everything went well". "How'd I do?" I asked. "Well," said the anesthesiologist "you were pretty talkative, and we enjoyed it when you sang along with two of the songs playing on the speaker" "Sing," I said, "I am not a singer, I can't sing." "We noticed that early on" she remarked, "but it was good entertainment and you did know the words!!" I could hear chuckling from the surgical staff as I was pushed out of the room, so I thanked them all, waved goodbye, and to myself (and for my own good), promised somehow to end my operating room serenades... Bakersfield who attended the TANF sponsored event. This is a yearly program and always looked forward to by all of the volunteers from Nuui Cunni. Also, since we now have four certified food handlers, who were able to assist with serving the food provided by Jim Wyly and were responsible for the big clean up job. Since this type of program is a long time in planning, volunteers at Nuui Cunni spent many hours in preparation, including making 200 necklaces for all the children who came. Each year, the volunteers do something different for guests and it is so well received by the children. They also escort visitors to various educational activities set up around the grounds, plus help with Native American Crafts displays. Without these volunteers and our fearless leader, Patricia Malone Henry, Chairwoman of the Kern River Paiute Council, this size of an undertaking would be near impossible. Once again, “kudos” to Nuui Cunni and all volunteers, who so unselfishly give of their time. Shirley Allen Friends of the Center Coordinator

Courier Antler, Fin & Feather Report
Unbroken Circle Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier Columnist On the feather side The 24th annual Lake Isabella Junior Pheasant Hunt was a huge success, with as many girls as boys. It was a wonderful sight to see the next generation experiencing hunting with the wide-eyed gaze and anticipation that you can only see in the eyes of a Mencarini youngster. There were many parts of this hunt that were joy to watch but the one stand out part was the fact that there were quite a few girls taking part and most were very good shooters. As a young hunter, I can't remember any of my dad's friends' daughters being interested in hunting. I applaud the dads whose influence keeps the circle of hunting unbroken. While the sky was blue with lots of sunshine those blustery winds didn't have much affect on the
shooters as the dogs and there handlers flushed bird after bird, while I watched each bird that flushed fall back to earth from the shotgun of a young hunter. Another part of this hunt that hit that feel good button was the interaction between the parents and their kids. When you get a group of hunters together whether adults or kids, they always seem to huddle around and begin the story telling. With lots of birds, eager hunters, and a well organized club of dedicated volunteers, this was a safe and memorable event for all involved. I would like to say thanks to all the kids, the moms and dads, the dogs and their handlers, the National Rifle Foundation, the Fish and Game Habitat Club, the Dept. of Fish and Game and the U.S. Forest Service for their involvement and participation. There will be a 25th Junior Pheasant Hunt! Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and a volunteer at the Kern River Fish Hatchery. For questions or comments you can reach him through the Kern River Courier, office@kernrivercourier.com.

760-549-3783 or 760-223-3508 Abraham Lincoln scheduled Thanksgiving for the final Thurs. in November & it was celebrated on that day every year until 1939 when Franklin D. Roosevelt’s plan, known derisively as “Franksgiving,” was met with passionate opposition & in 1941, the President signed a bill making Thanksgiving the 4th Thursday in November.

A Thanksgiving Prayer "O we give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!" Psalm 106 "Oh, Heavenly Father, we give you thanks for your food, and ask that you fill the cups of those who are hungry." "We thank you Lord for your many blessings. May we always remember that they come from you." "We thank you for our health, and ask for healing of those that are sick." "We thank you for our family and friends, and ask that you be with those who are alone." "We thank you for our freedom, and remember those who are enslaved." "We thank you Lord for the giving of your son and our salvation, and that your spirit will descend upon those who do not believe." "We thank you Lord that we can worship you, and pray for those who feel they can not." "May these remembrances stir us to service." "That your gifts and blessings to us, may be used for you, and shared with others." "Lord, may we rejoice aways, constantly, and give thanks in all circumstances..." Thessalonians 5:16-18 "We pray this prayer in Jesus’ name, Amen" This prayer was originally published in a Dear Abby column that appeared at Thanksgiving many years ago and has become a family tradition that is read every year at our Thanksgiving table.

With a thankful heart Jack Duitsman, Pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” - Psalm 107:1 Here’s a quick no-credit assignment: Think of something you are thankful for. Duitsman Most likely you did, and most likely it wasn’t all that difficult to come up with something for which you either are, or should be, thankful. Examples can range from simple breath, the love of family, or perhaps something far less grand like the blessing of a new car. Perhaps the assignment was even a reminder that thankfulness is a good thing and should be added to the selfhelp list of ways to feel better on a regular basis. No argument, and certainly in line with Scriptural injunction to be those who live life with a sense of gratitude for what we have rather than despondency and complaint for what we don’t. This being so, may I ask why simple moments of “what I am most thankful for is . . . “ can often seem simplistic and shallow at best, and self-serving and hypocritical at worst? The above verse gives us a key that is often missing or overlooked in our desire to be those who are thankful. Consider this: If we begin our giving of thanks at anything less than the goodness of the Father’s great heart of love, then we run the risk of also giving place to complaints for all the reasons life gives us to be far less than thankful. The Psalmist directs us to give thanks simply for the goodness of God, and the presence of His never ending love in our lives. This beginning place can birth an

outpouring of thankfulness for specific points of praise, but if the order is not kept in place (God first), thankfulness can also be an unwitting breeding ground for bitterness, jealousy, resentment and frustration. The moment things or stuff becomes the focus of our thankful hearts, then the absence of things or the loss of stuff can quickly become reasons for me to forego the giving of thanks, and even worse, to believe I am justified in my complaint. After all, I gave God thanks when things worked in my favor, why should I not blame Him when circumstances turned ill? This is far more than splitting grammatical or theological hairs, and the results can have sweeping and far reaching effect on our lives. To begin our returning of thanks in who God is, and what His presence in our lives actually means is to embrace all of life’s experiences within the scope of the Father’s willingness and ability to work all things together for good. From this vantage point we are able to see past the transient nature of life’s blessings, and the temporary nature of life’s difficulties while peering into the eternal heart of our loving Lord. In a willingness to give thanks for the goodness of God in the face of what may indeed be anything but good, our confession becomes larger than the momentary event being experienced. To pause in thankfulness to the One from whom all blessings flow will release a life-working flow within us that surpasses the specifics and temporal, and pushes into the eternal nature of the Holy Spirit’s work within us. This remains the ongoing opportunity for us as believers in Jesus, and while a day set aside for the giving of thanks can be a reminder and encouragement, a lifestyle of thankfulness for the great love of God can fundamentally change who we are as sons and daughters of God.
