Courier Special www.history.com

What a busy six days! Thanksgiving, November 28, where food and festivities are present in abundance, Black Friday, Nov. 29, where lines start forming at stores long before opening with hopes of taking advantage of holiday shopping bargains which await inside, Cyber Monday, Dec. 2, where on-line shopping is vigorously pursued and National Giving Day, Tuesday, December 3, where thoughts turn to giving even as major “shop-until-you-drop” days continue through the holidays. Kern County has dived into Giving Day preparations in a big way in 2013. On Nov. 20, the Kern Community Foundation hosted a Giving Guide “red carpet” premiere in Bakersfield for donors and non-profits. On Nov. 24, 30,000 copies of the 2013 Kern County Giving Guide, with more than 100 nonprofits profiled, were distributed by the Bakersfield Californian. The Kern County Board of Supervisors have proclaimed Dec. 3 as Giving Day in Kern County, too, as part of Giving Day nationally. The goal of Giving Day is to encourage people to make a special additional contribution to the causes

Happy Thanksgiving In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower had left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers - an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their faith and other individuals lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the New World. After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village. In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For two centuries, “Thanksgiving Days” were celebrated by individual colonies and states, on different days. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held the final Thursday of November.

Things I have noticed...

Automotive memories $19.95? When the car started using oil, we bought oil by the gallon and poured it in as needed. Remember when you wanted to turn, you stuck your hand out the window and waved? No electric turn signals. Headlight bulbs didn’t last long and you kept spares in a small box with extra fuses (which for some reason or another would burn out at the darndest times). How about seat covers that you bought to cover the holes in the seats which never fit but you kept them anyway? The spare tire used up most of the trunk space but for some of us who were lucky, the spare fit on the fender and we had a rumble seat with a windy view of the world as you rode and others drove. There were no seat belts and having a flat tire was a common thing and you always carried tire patches and a hand air pump. Paint on a car was not exotic: black, green and white were the colors of choice. Some cars had only a left rear taillight and a bracket for the license. If you belonged to the Automobile Club you got an emblem to attach to the license plate stating the number of years you were with them. And finally there was the joy of taking a Sunday drive to some destination where we usually had a picnic lunch (maybe with turkey sandwiches) and relaxed under the shade of a tree. It didn’t get any better!

Because this is the day after Thanksgiving and by now everyone is probably stuffed and looking forward to something different, this is Middleworth different! Yesterday someone said to me, “I like it when you write about old times.” So I started looking back over many of the stories I have written and I noticed that, sure enough, I do evoke thoughts about the old days which kicks off memories of another time. So today let’s stroll down memory lane again. How about cars? Remember when you couldn’t buy new tires, you recapped the old ones by bonding new tread to the old tire? Or sometimes you would have the tire re-grooved? How about a foot switch to dim your headlights, or windshield wipers that operated on vacuum and would slow down when you revved the motor? How about new spark plugs every 5,000 miles? Or a flax water bag that hung on the front grill and gave you cool water when you stopped to take a rest break? How about buying a car and then you had to install a heater and radio after buying them from Pep Boys. Remember Manny, Moe and Jack? And an “a-oo-gah” horn that everyone could hear. How about adding fog lights and having your car painted by Earl Sheib for

Turn around and thanks give Jack Duitsman Courier Columnist Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice, and he fell on his face at His feet, giving Duitsman thanks to Him. And he was a Samaritan. - Luke 17:15-16 The miraculous is always to come across as exactly what it is: something extra-ordinary that is out of the control of the recipient(s) to effect. The fact that we have often come across the verse referenced above contained in the narrative of Jesus healing the 10 lepers must not get in the way of the miraculous remaining ever miraculous. Ten men who had greeted yet another day as outcasts of society as a result of their leprosy, an incurable and deadly disease process, were met by the power of God in the person of Jesus who in a moment of time changed their life experience. We shall not focus on the nine other healed lepers in this space, for we could only surmise their response to the healing of Jesus in their lives, but rather look at the one who is mentioned as returning to the Lord and loudly glorifying God and giving thanks for the miraculous healing he had experienced. For this one, the powerful work of healing had gone deeper than

renewed skin, and had worked change in who he was at the heart level. Because Jesus wondered why only one had returned to give thanks, you and I can draw from the inferred principle that apparently giving thanks is a quality to be desired in our hearts, and one which doesn’t necessarily come naturally. It was just the one healed leper who was pointed out as exhibiting the response that should accompany the touch of the Lord in our lives: “glorifying God with a loud voice . . . giving thanks to Him.” In turning around to give thanks to Jesus, this man was proclaiming loudly that his wonderful new skin condition was a secondary issue which took a back seat to what was happening in his heart. Where we are tempted to focus our attention on miracle or lack thereof, the place we ought to begin looking for the work of God is within our hearts and the manifestation of that work that is measurable by our willingness to give thanks in any and every circumstance. The willingness to give thanks allows us to see Jesus for Who He is, and embrace His plan for us that is always good with a heart committed to trust the Father’s heart of love no matter what. Blessed Thanksgiving dear heart, and may our hearts be consumed with the giving of thanks. Jack Duitsman pastors Father’s Heart Foursquare Church in Kernville.

Announcements, Continued from page 3 Hoffmann Hospice to host Light Up a Life ceremony Hoffmann Hospice will hold its annual Light Up a Life Ceremony on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m. at Circle Park/Big Blue Bear located at 101 Piute Drive. This is a very special, memorable community event that provides an opportunity to celebrate those individuals who have enriched our lives. Hoffmann Hospice’s Light Up a Life ceremony is a tree-lighting tradition where we gather together and commemorate those we love by illuminating a tree with lights, each light symbolizing an individual who has touched the life of another. Hoffmann invites the public to share in this event by purchasing individual “lights” for $10 each in honor of someone living, or in memory of a friend or loved one who has passed. There is no charge to attend. The event includes a reading of all the names represented by the lights, as well as a unique candle lighting custom involving our staff and guests. To pre-purchase a light or for more information, call 661-410-1010. Hoffmann Hospice is located at 6040-D Lake Isabella Blvd.

Antler, Fin & Feather Report

Back in the fishing hole again Mike Mencarini Courier Columnist After resolving an extended period of being without my own transportation, I finally have the mobility to go fishing again. That old Mencarini cliché, “You don’t know what you have until you lose it” works well for me at this point. I didn’t realize how much I missed fishing, especially angling for my favorite pan fish, the crappie. This past week I went fishing twice with my good friend, Jack. The wind was blowing and it was raining. Not a drenching rain, but it was windy and wet. Anyhow, the crappie bite was a little slow due to the colder water temperature. I can tell you that it’s a blast to catch a stringer full of one-pound crappie (see photo). Some days are much better than others, depending on the location of the bait in the lake. I realize I am fortunate to be able to fish on the docks at French Gulch but with the lake water level being low, this winter should be good for some shoreline areas. The standing

timber around the flume at Oreck’s Cove and Boulder Gulch comes to mind. Crappie will be in the deepest water where there is structure this time of year. The trout bite should start to warm up for those fishing from shore. The sandy shoreline, close to deeper water, is where you can find trout in the winter. Here is something to remember. The lake has very limited deep water areas right now. Concentrate on those areas because the fish are somewhat crowded this year. Shallow water usually does not hold many fish in the colder months.

Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and avid fisherman.

Keep your holiday shopping fun, and safe, too! ■ Choose your parking spot carefully -- Do not park close to bushes, trees, walls, large vehicles or any other obstruction that could provide a cover for criminals. At night, park in well-lighted areas, ideally where others are coming and going. ■ Keep valuables out of sight -- Hide or remove anything valuable from the vehicle. Tablets, laptops, smart phones and navigational systems are popular targets for car burglars. They are easy to steal and conceal. If possible, leave them at home -- or at least hide them out of sight. If you accumulate shopping bags during the trip, lock them in the trunk. ■ Lock up -- All doors should be locked and all windows should be shut tight. Don’t forget to lock the trunk if it doesn’t lock automatically when you lock your doors. When returning to your vehicle, lock your doors immediately upon entering. ■ Use Alarms -- Set your car alarm before leaving your vehicle. If you don’t have one, consider having one installed. Alarm stickers and decals are great visible deterrents. Others include steering-wheel locks and brake-pedal locks. Even carrying simple items like a whistle can be helpful to draw attention and ward off thieves. ■ Be Alert -- Always be aware of your surroundings when parking and returning to your vehicle. Keep your keys in hand so you can enter your vehicle quickly. Check your back seat before entering your vehicle to be sure no one is hiding inside.

Need help from the community LAKE ISABELLA REALTY INC.

Harry P. Thal Courier Columnist I am in hopes that readers will share this article with physicians, colleagues and social service Thal workers. It is important to reach certain people that are typically under served. The population that needs to be reached are those folks on Medicare who have Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disorders and Chronic (or Congestive) Heart Failure. A very special Medicare Advantage plan is now available in Kern County. Almost all of the physicians in the Kern River Valley are on the plan’s participating physician list, and the applications are available through your health insurance agent. JADE is the name of the plan that has a $0 monthly premium and works to cover your Medicare benefits with additional services. Participating physician office visits and specialists have a $0 co-pay. Laboratory and X-rays have a $0 co-pay, Diabetic supplies are $0 and hospital co-pay is also $0. The plan also covers outpatient hospital, urgent care, routine podiatry, hearing exam, routine vision and preventative dental all for $0 co-

pay. Preferred generic prescriptions are $0 and other medications are at costs lower than most HMO plans in Kern County. Many people in need of care, that is only available in Bakersfield, or require transportation assistance from their home to their local doctor, can take advantage of a free transportation service. Medical transportation is included for a $0 co-pay. Health Club membership is provided free of charge. This plan has been specifically developed for those who require medical maintenance and are on Medicare. There is only a week left for the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period 2014. Medicare beneficiaries who also have assistance under Medi-Cal will have extended time to enroll, but my desire is for all people who can benefit from this program to call their health insurance agent and enroll before the close of business on Saturday, Dec. 7 or it will then be too late for people not on Medi-Cal.

ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) Your Arian penchant for impatience shows, as you consider passing a problem-prone project on to someone else. Best advice: Stay with it and work out those snarls yourself. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Even patient Bovines can be frustrated when carefully made plans go awry. But crank up that “stick-to-it-ivity” you do so well, and you’ll soon find that your schedule is back in sync. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your aspect favors using more resourceful means in dealing with a workplace situation. Some discreet checking around could help shed light on the root cause of the problem. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You show an unusually strong streak of stubbornness in rejecting suggestions from friends and/or family members early in the week. But you become more receptive by the week’s end. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) You might find a gentler approach more effective when dealing with those who resist needed changes. Remember, the word “persuasion” starts with the sound “purr.” VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) A disappointing experience with someone you felt you could trust can be painful. But there just might be more to this situation than you’re aware of. Press for an explanation.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Changing your views about something you believe in isn’t easy. But you might reconsider as the facts come in. Keep your mind open, even if you’re uneasy about what you might learn. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) You might have to do some serious shifting of gears to get your project back on track. But cheer up. Your hard work starts to produce some positive results by the week’s end. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) An unsettling mood at the start of the week soon lifts and gives way to a more positive attitude as you find fun and friendship beginning to dominate your aspect. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) A delay in firming up holiday plans could work to your advantage. Use this time to scout out possibilities that might be more in line with what those close to you would prefer. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Some people might question some of the new friends you’ve welcomed into your life. But your ability to see beyond the obvious helps you recognize how special they are. PISCES (Feb. 19 to Mar. 20) Financial matters can be especially tricky this week. It’Ss best to follow a conservative investment path for now, and wait for a more fortuitous time to take a bolder approach.

Advanced Reconveyance, Inc., As Trustee, 43545 17th Street W., Ste 503, Lancaster, CA 93534, 661-945-5525, Vickie Durham, Trustee Sale Officer NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on the notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgages, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 661-945-5525 using the file number 13-2272. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet web site. The best way to verify the postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
