International Academies of Emergency Dispatch. It was the 77th organization in the world to be awarded the highest distinction for the comprehensive implementation and compliance with the Medical Priority Dispatch System. There are now 30,000 members in 20 countries. MPDS is the world's
most widely used 911type pre arrival instruction, dispatch and life support protocol system. With scripted telephone instructions for dispatchers to give direction to the caller on CPR, choking, bleeding control, childbirth and more. Re-accreditation requires certification for all the dispatchers and
involves completing a detailed self study and analysis of the systems. This accomplishment demonstrates to not only each individual within the communications center, but also to the administration, community, and the world, that our ECC is compliant with all international practice standards.

Pastor Jack Duitsman thoughts on giving thanks for you.
Wrapped with love Valerie Minoux Kern River Courier The Christmas parade this year was themed "Giving Joyfully." While checking the lineup of the 50 entrants, I met a lovely woman named Rita Holte, entry entitled "Santa's Helper." Rita walked the route handing out the 200 lovely hand knitted scarves she made all year long, as well as the many pairs of work gloves she collected. To me she is the epitome of what this year's theme is all about. Rita doesn't render service to others for recognition, but because she enjoys making a difference. This year was her first time to enter the parade. I'm sure the recipients of her gifts were as pleased as I am with my bright yellow scarf. Let's all take the time not only this holiday season, but all year long to make a difference The feeling of "Giving Joyfully" is the best feeling of all.

Dam question of the week:
Q: A:
If my property is impacted, how quickly will I be relocated?
If and when an approved plan is initiated for construction, a specific process and timetable for any relocations, which includes advance notice to the affected residences and businesses, will also be initiated. The overall process includes a survey of the affected properties, followed by an orderly negotiated acquisition of the properties and relocation of the impacted residents and businesses. It is important to note that no acquisitions or relocations would occur prior to formal authorization to construct an approved project.

Giving thanks... for you Jack Duitsman, Pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers 1Thess 1:2 It would appear that the Duitsman human condition is fraught with an overwhelming sense of inferiority from which escaping is difficult. A look in the mirror (literally and figuratively) brings with it a deep sense of minor imperfections which cause distress at best, or major flaws that cause deep shame at worst. The lifelong process to either fix what appears wrong with us, or sufficiently mask these points of personal weakness is both epic and at the same time pitiful in the sorrowful sense that we have difficulty seeing the treasure placed in each of us by the heart of the Father. Far beyond a polite greeting at the beginning of a letter to his friends in Thessalonica, the above verse contains the truth of what the Father's heart is for us. Can we even imagine such words being said about us? Really, with all of our frailties (real and imag-
ined), would there be many (or any!) who would say they "give thanks" for us? Surely we might add caveats here for what we could or should be that are reasons for such giving thanks, but the Scripture adds no such addendums. Or perhaps we might shift the focus to what we have done, or might do that would elicit such emotions of appreciation, but again, we would be reading more into this passage than is easily supported. It appears that the Apostle was remembering these dear people in their absence from him and simply giving thanks for who they were, imperfections and all. Could we but catch a glimpse of such truth from time to time would bring with it such a rest for our souls, such a place of peaceful repose within our hearts. Away from us all false reflections of inferiority, and be replaced with a vision of us through the heart of the Father, and Jesus, the Redeemer, our Lord of love. Of a course, we each have a far piece to journey as the Holy Spirit makes us more like our Savior, but can we each hear the voice of our Father speaking to each of us through the above words of who and how He has made us, and how His touch on our lives is that which is to be celebrated? May we each look again into the mirror of His freedom, and know deep within our souls the deep and abiding love in which we are embraced.

John Thomas (Jack) Dempsey May 13, 1940 - November 19, 2012 John Thomas (Jack) Dempsey, Sr. was born May 13, 1940 in Meadville, PA, the only child of James V. Dempsey and Minnie Lewis Dempsey. He passed away on November 19, 2012 at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family. Jack attended St. Brigids Grade School, St. Agatha's High School and Glendale College. In 1957 on his 17th birthday, Jack joined the US Marine Corps and was very proud of his military service, having done his boot camp at Paris Island. He chose PI 57 as his personalized license plate. While in the service, Jack served as an airplane mechanic and continued that career when he was discharged. From 1961 to 1973 he worked for Lockheed Air Service, United Airlines and A&P as a line mechanic. He went to Hughes Aircraft Space and Communications in 1973 where he progressed from entry-level position as Mechanical Technician to Crew Chief, to Supervisor, to General Supervisor and last to Superintendent. He directed six supervisors and up to 150 employees being directly responsible for the production and safeguarding of several million dollars of product and projects. Jack also was an antique radio collector and restorer and had a small antique radio store in Redondo Beach during those years. He left Hughes in 1988 and moved with his wife, Phyllis, to the Kern River Valley where he purchased Sierra Sporting Goods in Kernville. He was very proud of his store and in the early 1990s he took John Spoon as a partner. They operated the store until Jack had to have heart surgery in 1996 and they closed the store. Jack later worked as a cell phone salesman and was involved in finding locations and having several cell phone towers installed. His last position was with Isabella True Value as an AT&T cell phone representative. Jack retired in 2001 and spent the last years of his life doing what he wanted as much as his health would allow Jack was married during his younger years to Jean and they had three sons He married Phyllis in 1978 and enjoyed a good life until she passed away in 1988. Jack enjoyed gambling and he spent many vacations in Las Vegas . In 1989 Jack married Judy Dempsey and they lived in Kernville, CA until 2011 when Jack's health made it necessary to be closer to medical care and they moved to Bakersfield, CA. Jack and Judy loved the outdoors and spent many of their vacations hiking and fishing on the various rivers and streams in the Sierra Nevadas. With his marriage to Judy, Jack added two daughters to his family. Jack is survived by his loving wife, Judy Haygood Dempsey, his sons Martin Dempsey and wife Sandy, grandchildren Jimmy, Ashley, Brett and Matthew, by his son James wife Michelle, grandchildren Ellen, David (Andy) and Cassie, by son John II and his grandchildren Kady and two great-grand daughters Mia and Sophia, Melisa. Erin, Victoria and Jonathan and by his daughter Cindy Underwood (partner John) and her daughters Natalie and Stephanie, his daughter Kelly and her sons Dillan and Jordan and by his sister-inlaw Jennie Haygood. . Jack was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, John Haygood, parents and numerous aunts, uncles and friends. Jack's "Memories and Treasures" book contains memories of many friends that preceded him in death. Also found in that book would be his parting words: "Judy, what can I say? I love you and good luck. Now take everyone and drink up my good whiskey. Please don't be sad. And to everyone else here, thank you and enjoy life. Most of my good friends have gone before me. Love you all, JACK." Graveside services were held at Saturday November 24th at the Kern Valley Cemetery in Kernville with a celebration of his life afterwards at the Kernville Chamber Community Center in Kernville.

The hook is set for 2013 derby Courier Special Fred Roach, Derby Chairman The 2013 Isabella Lake Fishing Derby is scheduled for April 20, 21, 22, 2013, and preparations are in full swing. We historically have received our Derby fish the third or fourth week in November, but as you may have noticed, the fish are not in the pens at French Gulch yet. I can assure you, they are on their way. The derby commitee was scheduled to receive the fish this week, however, because of hatchery problems and transportation problems, we do not expect delivery until the first or second week in December. This should not affect the Derby, as the fish are alive and well and being fed at the hatchery. Luckily we have this delay, as the factory that produces the fish food had problems and could not deliver until last week. We have purchased and received 9,900 pounds of fish food and the docks and pens are being prepared to start feeding.
We currently have eight $10,000.00 fish sponsors, and once again the Chamber of Commerce fish will be worth $20,000 We will again be having a $500.00 prize for someone registering early, and first, second, third, and forth longest fish prizes. Businesses and individuals are now beginning to sending in their applications in to be Bobber Bowl sponsors. The derby registration forms will be available after January 1, and you may also be able to get your drawing tickets to win a pontoon boat and order your 2013 hats and t-shirts at that time. Yes, the 2013 Isabella Lake Fishing Derby is alive and well. All we need now is rain and a good snow pack in our mountains so the lake can recover to a level where the Derby can be a success. If you have any questions regarding the Derby, please feel free to contact the Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce at 760-3795236.

The last secret agent By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK "The Bourne Legacy" (R) -The last secret agent to go by the codename Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) set in motion a series of convoluted events that create a firestorm for another rogue operative wearing the Bourne identity (Jeremy Renner). In this case, replacing the star of the series with a different actor is not an indicator of rapidly declining quality standards. Tony Gilroy, screenwriter for the first three Bourne movie, takes over as director for this one. In previous Bourne movies, it wasn't too hard to keep a handle on what was going on and why it was compelling. In this one, I gave up mid-way through and just started taking in the spectacle. That's not the worst thing, but it's not a good sign. "Ice Age: Continental Drift" (PG) -- It seems the "Ice Age" franchise is set on teaching children that extinction is long, repetitive, formulaic process. Manny the mammoth, Diego the sabretooth, Sid the sloth (Ray Romano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo, respectively) and many more reappear for this fourth installment about an unlikely team of prehistoric talking critters. The movie uses all of the easiest, most cliched puns and pop-culture gags on an audience too young to be

Jeremy Renner in "The Bourne Legacy" sick of them. Perhaps bombarding the kiddos with lazy material will help them build an early immunity to lameness. I know that's a stretch, but it's the best thing I can say about "Ice Age 4" besides, "It was mediocre. "Ted" (R) -- Seth MacFarlane, the creator of TV's "Family Guy," brings us this raunchy comedy that goes above and beyond what he can do on television. Ted (voiced by MacFarlane) is a stuffed bear brought to life by a lonely child's wish. Years later, that child is a man (Mark Wahlberg), and his magic talking teddy is a beer-chugging, profanity-spewing bro who enables immature behavior. It's obscene and exquisitely lowbrow. If you can stomach the volume of blue humor, Ted has surprising heart and belly laughs. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Tips on selling during the holidays Typically, the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday seasons are pretty slow in the real estate world. Most people are concentrating much more on family and travel then they are on hunting for homes. Freeman Buyers are often busy with Holiday preparations and sellers who are still in the residence they are trying to sell are also making plans. It is normal for the real estate market in any given area to have seasonal adjustments due to certain holidays and weather. For example, in Alaska the real estate season is the spring and summer, because of winter weather. Yet in Mammoth, CA the real estate selling season is pretty much year around and increases in the winter due to the Ski Resort. It is the same for us here locally except the trends are not exactly what you would think. We have noticed over the years that the times when the most escrow transactions occur are in the fall and spring. Winter is for the most part slow, and summer is also slow which you would think would not be the case. The point is, trends matter, and real estate for every area around the country has typically cyclical supply and demand trends. So here are some tips for you sell-

ers out there trying to sell a home in a slow time of year ■ First of all, access is everything, whether your property is vacant or you are still living there, make sure access is easy for agents and clients. Lockboxes are the way to go and our MLS system has a fully automated system that only Realtors can access. ■ Secondly, make sure the house is clean and presentable, this is huge. If your house looks great from the outside but smells like a locker room and has debris stacked floor to ceiling you are going to need a real motivated buyer! ■ Make the house inviting. Just clean and picked up is not good enough. Remember, people are not just seeing the house to buy the property itself; they are buying the experience of living there. As a seller, pretend you are a buyer, think on when you bought the property and why and take your own advice, and make the place most welcoming. ■ Fourth and probably most importantly, make sure your Realtor is aggressively marketing the property. I see this all the time, a beautiful home with say five pictures when you can post up to 25 in the MLS system. Or a property that is listed with an out of area and as a result none of the local agents even know that it is listed. Use somebody locally who knows the market and can get your property the exposure it needs. Matt Freeman is a Realtor with Freeman’s Lakeside Realty (760) 3795915 or cell 223-0880. Salome’s Stars ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Start preparing now to make sure you get the credit you're due for all that effort you put in to get that project off the ground. A new challenge emerges after the 15th. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You're still charging full steam ahead on the job -- and that's fine. But take time to share the joy of preparing for the upcoming holidays with folks you love. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A former detractor resists joining your ranks just yet. Give him or her time to learn more about what you're doing. Meanwhile, devote more time to friends and family. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be careful not to be goaded into a tiff by someone who might be looking for a fight. Remain cool as you make your exit. Be assured that others will rally to your support. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Kudos on getting the well-deserved Lion's share of the rewards for a job well-done. Now you can take a breather from your workaday duties and spend time with your family. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You enjoy a quick spurt of renewed energy just in time to meet that upcoming deadline. A potentially romantic situation looms. How it develops will be up to you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Watch out
for distractions that could cause delays and leave you running twice as fast to finish your work by the 15th. Then go ahead and have fun. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might prefer to work on current tasks on your own. But be open to a potentially useful suggestion from someone who admires you and wants to help. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Avoid rushing full gallop into that volunteer project without knowing what's expected of you. Take things a step at a time as you begin to find your way. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Good news: You should begin to feel more comfortable expressing your emotions. This will go a long way in helping you with that personal situation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An old friend gives confusing signals. Best advice: Don't assume that things will necessarily work themselves out. Ask questions and demand straight answers. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new relationship needs time to develop. Be careful not to let your emotions flood your natural sense of caution. Meanwhile, check out that new job offer. © 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

For some time, many of us have found ourselves at a loss when someone says “You don’t know Jack Schitt.” Well, thanks to genealogy efforts, you can now respond in an intelligent way. •Jack Schitt is the only son of Awe Schitt. •Awe Schitt was married to O. Schitt, the fertilizer magnate & owner of Needeep N. Schitt, Inc. They had 1 son, Jack. •Jack Schitt married Noe Schitt. They had 6 children: Holie Schitt, Giva Shitt, Fulla Schitt, Bull Schitt, Deep Schitt & Dip Schitt. Deep Schitt married Dumb Schitt, a high school dropout. •After 15 yrs., Jack & Noe Schitt divorced. Noe Schitt later married Ted Sherlock & because her kids were living with them, she kept her previous name & was then known as Noe SchittSherlock. •Meanwhile, Dip Schitt married Loda Schitt & they had a son who was nicknamed Chicken Schitt. •2 of the other 6 children, married the Happens brothers in a dual ceremony. The newspaper announced the Schitt-Happens nuptials. The Schitt-Happens children were Dawg, Byrd & Horse. •Bull Schitt left home to tour the world, then later returned home with his Italian bride, Pisa Schitt. Now when someone says “You don’t know Jack Schitt,” you can correct them!
