Honor valley’s veterans Mike Devich Kern River Courier

Michael Batelaan/Kern River Courier

Remember our veterans next Thursday, Nov. 11. South Fork Middle School’s 8th graders will be honoring local veterans the day before, Nov. 10. See the story below.

Winter starts for agencies Fire season has officially been declared over by local firefighting agencies. However, the weather at this time of year sometimes brings us unseasonably hot and dry winds, so keep your guard up. Also, the Forest Service is moving to their annual winter hours. The Kernville office has begun closing on the weekends. The Lake Isabella office will stay open seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, throughout the winter season.

Veterans Day is Nov. 11. It’s the anniversary of the day in 1918 the first World War ended, but it has become so much more than that over the years. It has become the day that we honor American veterans of all wars. Do yourself a favor and rent “Saving Private Ryan” if you’ve never seen it. The opening scenes will rivet you to your seat as you watch what is one of the most realistic re-creations of World War II ever put on film. And hug a vet afterward.

Week ahead offers events galore Mike Devich Kern River Courier

Do you complain about how there’s never anything to do here in the valley? Well, look at our free Courier Calendar listings this week, starting on page 2. Today, Friday, is the first day of the Touch of Crafts gift fair at Kern Christian Church. Also, for kids, there is a Story Time at the Kernville library. Tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 6, is the continuation of the craft fair, as well as the annual turkey dinner at Highland Chapel, the Sheriff’s Activity League fundraiser dinner, and the dinner for KV Youth Football and Cheer, followed by the monthly KRV Astronomy Club star party.

On Sunday, Nov. 7 is the big recreation of a WWII USO Stage Door Canteen, which is where GIs could be fed and entertained. There were eventually several across the country. On Tuesday, Nov. 9 is the inaugural meetng of a new weight loss and Bible study group, as well as a free film about the problem of the disappearing honeybee. On Wednesday, Nov. 10, South Fork School throws a celebration for veterans. The next day, Veterans Day, Thursday Nov. 11, there will be the customary gathering at the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights at 11 a.m. to honor our vets. Also, My Place Restaurant in Lake Isabella gives away free meals in celebration of veterans. There is

Canteen dinner recreates ‘40s Kern River Courier

During World War II, Stage Door Canteens were opened to bring entertainment to America’s servicemen. The original Canteen in Manhattan's Theater District was started by Broadway performers. The Hollywood Canteen was founded soon thereafter by film actors Bette Davis and John Garfield. Both venues featured entertainment, dancing and food. The price of admission was a soldier’s uniform. On any given night they could be serenaded by Dinah Shore, dance with Joan Crawford or laugh at the antics of Red Skelton or Mickey Rooney. For the privates waiting to be deployed, a visit to the canteens were a way to forget, albeit temporarily, their uncertain futures. For servicemen and women returning

from the fronts, the canteens were part of a celebratory homecoming. They proved so successful that by November 1945, 10 canteens, including Paris and London, had entertained 11 million troops. On Sunday, Nov. 7, the Rotary Club of Kern River Valley will host Rotary’s USO Stage Door Canteen, a dinner/dance at the Lake Isabella senior center honoring local men and women who have served in the Armed Forces. There will be ‘40s and ‘50s music. Social hour starts at 5pm followed by fried chicken dinner served at 6pm. Tickets are $12. Call Jeanette Rogers-Erickson at (760) 376-4419 for word on ticket availability. (Thanks to the National World War II Museum for the historical background of Stage Door Canteens.)

also another story time for kids on Nov. 11, as well as opportunities to get flu shots and attend a senior driving program, Details on all these events are in the Calendar. And if that’s not enough for you, look on page 2 for all the regular occurring activities, such as the Farmer’s Markets! You can never say there’s nothing going on here in the Kern River Valley. If you still run out of things to do, you can start addressing Christmas cards or start your Christmas shopping at the many unique stores here in the valley. One such unusual place is the Kern Valley Museum’s gift shop, which offers all kinds of great merchandise you never see anywhere else.

Election defeats Measure G Kern River Courier

Although all the ballots have not yet been counted, it appears the hospital bond, Measure G, did not get the two-thirds majority it needed to pass in the Nov. 2 election. According to ballotpedia.com, “Measure G, if approved by voters, (would have allowed) the board of the Kern Valley Healthcare District to borrow $22.7 million. The money would (have been) spent to build a new emergency room, meet current seismic standards, purchase mortgaged assets to reduce annual operating costs, and provide modern medical technology, including cardiac, ultrasound and radiology." In other Kern Valley Healthcare District news, according to the unofficial results from the Kern County Elections Board released Nov. 3, David W. Derr received a hospital board position, and Kathryn Knight retained her seat on the board.

Death notices

Things I Have Noticed...

Say ‘golly gee’ rather than &%! Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist

I mashed my finger with a hammer yesterday and said some Xrated words. It didn't make my finger feel better, but somehow it relieved part of the stress. I've noticed that sometimes we use substitute wording to explain, to emphasize, or to underline some- Middleworth thing that happened or is going to happen. For instance, when I am surprised, I might say “golly gee whiz,” which is, I'm sure, a substitute for colorful, naughty words. When surprised I might say “holy smoke” (a term that probably originated from a surprised observer at a burning church as he viewed smoke rising from the embers.) “Colder than a well digger’s fanny in the Klondike” is often used to underline how cold it is. Using “Klondike” makes you feel the cold and explains goose bumps on the fanny. The word “yes” is often replaced by “yep,” which probably came from a horseman talking to himself somewhere out on the prairie. “Yep” is often interchanged with “yeah,” “sure,” and “irrefutably.” ”Shazam,” when said by Billy Batson, turned him into the crime fighter Captain Marvel. The word

Join us Thanksgiving Day

“oops” is sometimes uttered when a patient is awake and the operating surgeon follows up with "heh, heh, just a little doctor humor." “Sorry about that” is usually said when a person doesn't really mean it and is probably gloating about your discomfort. The word “dude” is in fairly new use and can be a sign of friendship ... or is used by someone who has forgotten your name. “Darn,” “phooey” and “rats” are also used instead of more risque words and can be spoken in mixed company or while talking to the church pastor. “Damn,” for those of us who live in the Kern Valley, is not always a swear word. Instead the speaker could be talking about the Isabella Damn. "Yo" is a word made famous by Sylvester Stallone in the “Rocky” movies. (Usually said while including the word “Adrian.”) I always liked “Hi Yo Silver,” which meant “giddiyup, hoss” but sounded classier. “Yeah, right” usually means “yeah, wrong,” and is often used while watching political ads on TV. “Howdy” is short for “how do you do’ and is used by cowboys who have a hankering to say hello. And finally I end this column by saying “so long.” (Why that means “goodbye” is a burning question.) Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.

Friday, November 5, 2010 Courier Fishing Report

Fish are there for coming year Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier columnist

It seems to be the consensus of those I have talked to that this is just one of those down cycle years on the lake. Lucky for us we have a secret little place. It’s a place where seldom do we worry about the wind, or the lack of bait, or if we will find fish today. It’s a place Mike Mencarini where the fish we catch seem to grow overnight. It’s a place where no matter who you are or how old you are or your level of experie n c e , t h e r e always seems to be fish there. I think we all know this place. We call it the Kern R i v e r, upper or lower, and that almost magical place that keeps our local waters, more often than not, teeming with rainbow trout – the Kern River Hatchery/Planting Base.

Sponsored by the Airport Cafe at Kern Valley Airport Sierra Way, 4 mi. south of Kernville Rd. Breakfast & Lunch, 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. Great food 7 days a week

A couple of months from now we will enter 2011. If there are no major setbacks, we should have a great year of those home-grown extra large, trophy sized, multi-colored rainbow trout, which as of this writing are very healthy and doing well. If you would like to visit them you have an open invite during any regular business day at the hatchery. It is a neat place to spend some time. Bring the kids and some quarters. The kids love to feed the fish. All reports on the upper river say that the fishing “doesn’t get better than this.” If you have been struggling at the lake, now is a great time to take advantage of s o m e g r e a t trout fishing. Previews of new DVDs by DNA Smith New DVDs reviewed in this column will be available in stores the week of Nov. 15. PICKS OF THE WEEK "Avatar" -- Three-Disc Extended Collector's Edition (PG-13 ) -- Fans of James Cameron's bajillion-dollar-grossing sci-fi epic finally are getting the mega-release they've been waiting for. This three-disc set contains more than three hours of special features; 45 minutes of deleted scenes and three versions of the film: The original theatrical release, the special edition reScene from “Avatar” release and an extended cut of the film featuring an alternate opening sequence that is exclusive to this DVD set. Also worth noting: Both the original and special edition edits come with a familyfriendly soundtrack where all objectionable language has been removed. "RoboGeisha" (NR) -- From the makers of "Tokyo Gore Police" and "The Machine Girl" comes the latest swell in Japan's new wave of gory, low-budget, gonzo grindhouse flicks. The plots are ridiculous, the violence and gore is so over-the-top that it ceases to be shocking and becomes hilarious. Add to the mix some bad acting and laughable effects, and you've got yourself a recipe for good ol' cheesy fun. "RoboGeisha" has all of those elements in spades. This story of two sisters recruited by a shadowy corporation that transforms the girls into cybernetic assassins features a duel fought with butt-blades, machine-gun boobs, a chick with a sawblade face, and in the finale, a skyscraper that morphs into a killer robot.

Seriously, who needs drugs when we have Japan? "Modern Times" (Criterion Collection) (NR) -- Made in 1936, well after sound had been established as the industry standard, "Modern Times" is considered the last, best silent film -- and one of Charlie Chaplin's finest motion pictures. Set during the Great Depression, this romantic comedy about a factory worker driven mad by the soul-crushing tedium of his job and his infatuation with a beautiful homeless girl (Paulette Goddard) is notable for two pop-culture classics: The sequence of Chaplin being fed through a threading machine and his timeless song, "Smile." As this is a Criterion release, rest assured that the soundtrack and picture quality are top-shelf, as are the commentary tracks, special features and accompanying booklet. Salome’s Stars ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your ruling planet, Mars, allows you to assume a sense of command that can help you turn a chaotic workplace situation into one that's orderly, productive and, yes, even friendly. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Getting a relationship that's been stuck in a rut up and running again depends on how far you want to run with it. Be honest with yourself as you consider your decision. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be wary of rumors that seem to be coming from everywhere this week. Waiting for the facts before you act means never having to say you're sorry. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A difficult personal matter might prompt you to turn to a trusted friend to help you sort through your emotional conflicts. The weekend should bring some welcome news. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some of the new people coming into your life could play pivotal roles in future matters. Meanwhile, an old friend might have an important message. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A delay in getting things moving on schedule can be a blessing in disguise. Use this extra time to do more research so you can present solid facts. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might need to get involved in a personal matter before it

becomes a serious problem. Also be wary of someone offering to mediate unless you can be sure of his or her motives. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Taking sides in a dispute could prolong the problem. Stay out and stay cool. Then you can be friends with both parties when things settle down. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A friendship has the potential to become something more. With this week's aspects favoring romance, you might feel that this possibility is worth exploring. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The new job you want might require you to relocate. If so, keep an open mind and weigh all the positives and negatives before making your decision. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new relationship seems to be everything you could have hoped for. Congratulations. Meanwhile, it's not too early to get some feedback on that new project you're working on. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might have decided to get out of the fast-moving current and just float around hither and yon for a while. But you might find that the new opportunity is too tempting to turn down. BORN THIS WEEK: You believe in bringing out the best in people with kind deeds, loving words and recognition of their "special" selves. c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Recipes for Dummies by Bodfish Bob 1 tablespoon dry Italian salad dressing mix 2 tablespoons milk 3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Place tomatoes stem-side down; cut an “x” in each, to about 1/4-inch from the bottom of each tomato. Spread carefully to open the wedges without breaking. California Joe’s Storytelling Corner

Dad knew how to turn a buck California Joe Kern River Courier Columnist

When I was knee high to a grasshopper my father owned a huge couple of buildings in Alexandria, La. He called himself the Mayor of Washington Street. And so he was, lord of a certain domain California Joe which he ruled with an iron hand. He had a sign over the door that read, “Anything, from an airplane to a battleship.” And it was true. He bought a battleship in Japan just before the second World War. He owned a scrapyard in the back and figured he’d sell the battleship for scrap metal. The battleship was brought in on what they called “low-ball” trailers and cut up with torches. He put up another sign, “Battleship for sale pretty cheap.” Then he went out to an army base and bought a pile of tires. Underneath was hidden a bunch of batteries he’d spotted while bidding on the tires. People figured he’d paid too much for the tires. They didn’t know my father! Another time my father spotted hundreds of barrels at the base, filled with used oil from the trucks at Camp Claiborne. They had no place to put the oil. My father, Jack, offered to

dispose of the oil. The sergeant in charge felt it was a good way to handle it all. I was 12 then and wanted a job. My father had me go out to the base with Frank, our oneeyed truck driver (he had lost the other eye in a fight with another driver over a woman, whom he later married.) So Frank and I loaded up the barrels – hundreds of them, all filled with used engine oil. Nobody could figure out what ol’ Jack was up to this time, but everybody knew he had something in mind. And he did. On a Monday morning at 7 a.m. my dad had the barrels emptied all over Washington Street. The oil was then cleaned up by the crews of the sanitation department, who did their thing for a cleaner street life (and some cash which my dad thoughfully provided.) Jack, of course, sold the empty barrels for eight bucks each and made a killing! Here’s another killing he would be proud of. I sold 35 acres of land we owned in Louisiana on the road to Ft. Polk, about a half hour from Alexandria. Here’s the kicker – my dad was the camp supplier for two years out there. He won those 35 acres while playing poker in the back of one of his big trucks one rainy September afternoon! California Joe is the storyteller persona of Stevenson Phillips, an actor and singer living in Kernville. You may reach him at sscaljoe@aol.com.

Voices of Faith

Help my unbelief Jack Duitsman, pastor Father’s Heart Foursquare Church, Kernville

Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!" Mark 9:24 I remember a popular chorus that used to be sung in the church I attended in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s: Lord I believe, Lord I Duitsman believe, All things are possible, Lord I believe Catchy tune, easy to remember (probably easy to play on the guitar too, though I hadn't learned yet!), and the message of faith was clearly along Biblical lines. Without knocking the veracity of this little chorus, I wonder if we might line it up with the above passage of Scripture from Mark's Gospel? All too often my personal faith (or lack thereof) has left me feeling like a second class spiritual son, for when the rubber really met the road, invariably my faith flinched! At the moment of miracle, whatever that might be, I found a disposition of doubt within my heart that almost certainly short-circuited whatever it was that God wanted to work. All the "O ye of little faith" references in the Gospels were most certainly directed at me, and with them was all the condemnation that such a weakling of faith most certainly deserved. Is it any wonder why the miraculous

isn't expected too often? If you feel like I have taken a cheap shot at a nice chorus specifically, or have issue with faith and the miraculous manifestation of the power of God in general, I hope you will reconsider. As a confession or creed, I love the chorus referenced above, for I do believe that "with God all things are possible." (Matt. 19:26) This should also help answer a firm conviction that our Heavenly Father continually breaks into the flow of human experience with an outstretched hand of power, and whenever and wherever He does so, the results are AWESOME. However (you had to figure I would ruin everything with a big HOWEVER!), as a statement of my capacity to unflinchingly hold steady and keep fear from stopping the flow of God's touch in and through my life, messages like that of the afore mentioned chorus cause me great trouble. I find myself more often than not in the place of the father mentioned in Mark's passage where everything in me wants to believe, but present circumstances have me so disheveled and undone that faith is nowhere to be seen. It is in these moments that Jesus can become real to us, when He touches us in such a way so as to remind us that the work is His (power) rather than ours (faith). “Voices of Faith” is a rotating column featuring messages from all churches. Pastors, please e-mail 400word messages to office@kernrivercourier.com
