Piute group to meet again Mike Devich Kern River Courier

The Sequoia National Forest Piute Mountains Collaborative Stakeholder Group will be convening Friday, Oct. 15 and possibly Saturday to discuss travel and trails in the Piute Mountain area. The main workshop meeting will be Friday, October 15, from 6-8:30 pm at the Odd Fellows Hall in Kernville. Also, possibly the next day, Saturday, Oct. 16 from 9 am to 3 pm the group might be gathering to further review the maps together at the

Odd Fellows Hall, or it may be used as time to take a field visit and look at actual routes under discussion. This will be discussed at the Friday meeting and the determination will be made then. Meetings are open to the public. There will be a segment of each meeting available for public comment. The primary purpose of the collaborative group is to determine if a mutually acceptable proposal or set of proposals can be developed for the Forest Service to consider regarding the Piute Mountains Travel Management Plan.

The U.S. Forest Service has decided to extend the closure of some of the French Meadow in the Piutes due to the presence of arsenic until Sept. 30, 2011, and it may be extended again if the cleanup of the area is not completed by that time. In the 1800s, the area was heavily mined for gold. The closure is in association with this activity. The area was inspected by the U.S. Forest Service in May 2009 due to the similar appearance between the soil and tailings piles (the non-valuable part of

If you were growing up in the 1960s and ‘70s, chances are you heard the song “Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron,” made famous by The Royal Guardsmen. The band also is known for its smash single “Snoopy’s Christmas,” which is still one of the most-played songs on radio stations around the world during the holiday season. The lead singer of the group, Barry Winslow, has moved into Christian music in the intervening years, and is coming to the valley Nov. 3 to play and sing and share his faith at a free concert. While The Royal Guardsmen officially disbanded in 1970, the six-member group has continued to make music together and separately throughout the years. While some of the members veered off into bluegrass, jazz and country music, Winslow has focused his artistry on writing and recording Christian music. He is currently signed to the major independent label, Star Creek Records. The Ocala, Florida native also shares his music through free concerts at churches across the United States. Additionally, he and his wife Teena have appeared on the TBN and TCT television channels. The couple will be performing at the Lakeshore Lodge, 7466 Wofford Blvd. at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3. The concert is free. For more information, call (760) 376-1910.

ore separated and left after mining) at nearby mines. A special field sampling device revealed that elevated levels of arsenic were present in the soil. Local soils have acceptable base line concentrations of arsenic between 2 and 18 mg/kg. Samples collected in the French Meadow closure area contained arsenic concentrations ranging from 175 to 4,900 mg/kg. This required designating the area as a Superfund site. The high risk, said the Forest Service, required instituting controls such as signing and closure until full evaluation and cleanup are completed.

Things I Have Noticed...

Here’s a modern cowboy tale Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist

I've noticed lately that I've had a hankering to write a novel – a modern western. It might go something like this: "It was a dark and stormy night. A cowboy sat tall in his Mercedes convertable. Bronzed by the Arizona sun, he Middleworth wore a six gun on one lean hip and a tattoo that said ‘Mother’ on his ankle. He called his Mercedes ‘Horse'. The moniker was unimaginative but so was the cowboy who went by the name of Tex. “He was called Tex because he came from Alabama. Born in the bathroom of a textile factory, his mother decided to call him Textile, which of course in later years was shortened to Tex. “There were a few that wanted to call him ‘Bathroom', others ‘Commode', but his dear old mother, the local madam, insisted and the name Textile stuck. “On this dark and stormy night, Tex got out of his offwhite Mercedes with Michelin tires and a licence plate that said ‘Drink Milk’, and moseyed over to the town saloon. There, he met a barmaid by the name of Miss Catty. She batted her one

good eye at him and it was love at first wink. “Tex was ecstatic and vowed to take her from this booze hall back to his ranch called The North 39. “Just as Miss Catty was putting on her galoshes, preparing to leave with Textile, in walked the vicious outlaw Spike McGillacuddy. He'd had a few Mai Tais and was snockered. “Spike, his hand on his Colt .42 in its pink holster dangling from his ample hip, said to Tex, ‘Unhand that maiden, she is betrothed to me!’ “Tex looked at him and said, ‘In a porcine’s eye, Spike. You’d better prepare to draw.’ “This so enraged the outlaw that he drew a picture of Tex on the bartop and said to him, "Let’s see you draw better'n that!’ “The bar quieted, every eye on Tex as he took his finger and, on the wet bar, drew a picture of Spike. The crowd cheered and stomped their muddy boots as it became apparent that Textile had outdrawn Spike. His head held low, Spike McGillacuddy slipped into the night and was never seen again. “Textile and Miss Catty were wed and lived happily ever after at their North 39 ranch. “The End.” Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.

Richard Rowe Special to the Courier

Rotary International’s District Governor made her annual visit to the Kern River Valley on Thursday, October 7. Rotary Club of Kern River Valley welcomed Deepa Willingham for her annual visit at a special dinner meeting at the Lakeshore Lodge in Wofford Heights. Other Rotary District dignitaries included Assistant Governor Tim Trujillo from Tehachapi; and from Ridgecrest, Exec Assistant Governor David Saint Amand and Virginia DeAngelis, past president of the Rotary Club of China Lake. When sworn in as President of the Rotary Club of KRV back in July, Paul Cromwell challenged the club to add eight more members in the coming year. At the special meeting this past Thursday, the club almost met that goal by adding seven new members sworn in by Cromwell and District Governor Deepa Willingham. They include: Frances Bowman, Daniel Halligan, Sonia Penney, Jeanine Starbuck, Vicki Stephenson, Brandy Wagner and Mel Wayne. Highlighting Rotary's challenge to eradicate polio and her polio vaccination trip to India, Dr. Holly Spohn-Gross celebrated a number of local polio survivors, including Robert Coburn, Jim and Shirley Davis, Steve Kenton, Lewis Robinson and Saundra Sparks. After 20 years of hard work, Rotary and its partners are on the

brink of eradicating polio worldwide. Rotary International is raising $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting $555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families. Rotary's most prestigious award, the Paul Harris Fellow, was awarded to Cathy Wild and Dr. Holly Spohn-Gross. The local rotary club donates $1,000 for each Paul Harris Fellow to the Rotary Foundation. Long-time Rotarian Marie Rushton was awarded "Rotarian of the Month" as well. The Rotary Club of Kern River Valley has weekly dinner meetings every Thursday at 6pm at the Kern Valley Golf Course. It is one of over 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries. Rotary KRV hosts an annual Golf Tournament and car show in Kernville every May and participates in many events around the Kern River Valley. Last year, the Kern River Valley Rotary Club raised close to $20,000 to support dozens of groups, projects and events like this in the Kern River Valley and around the world. If you are interested in Rotary, call Rotary Club of KRV President Paul Cromwell (760) 417-1008 or check www.clubrunner.ca/kernrivervalley.

Fees should not be commingled Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier columnist

Continuing with my columns about the questions I recently asked local experts, we’re up to question number 5: How do we deal with water quality in heavilyused beach areas like Tillie Creek? This question was passed on to the department of recreation, and Mike Mencarini here is their reply. “We at the dept. of recreation acknowledge that this is an issue but at this time we do not have the funding to do more. This is one of the reasons the dept. has sought to charge fees that would in turn come back to the local unit to pay for such programs. Absent of such revenues, there doesn’t appear to be anything we can do different.” For the most part I try not to express my personal view too much on most subjects, but this time I will indulge. This past July 4, there must have been 1500 or more visitors using the golden sand and warm water at Tille Creek. I think it is great for the local economy, but with only one portable toilet and one Dumpster, it’s terrible for the lake’s ecology.

Remain vigilant to repel e-mail and Internet con artist attacks Mike Devich Kern River Courier

Arlene Jones of Ahoy Travel recently advised her e-mail list that the company’s owner, Julie Hutchens, is not in the UK and does not need money. She says someone hacked into Hutchens’ e-mail address book and sent out a bogus e-mail to everyone on it. A few months ago, our columnist Harry Thal advised us of the same thing. Scam artists are taking advantage of our anxiousness to help a friend. The messages typically say, “Hi, I’m in the UK and I have lost my wallet and passport. I need you to wire me some money immediately.” The scam artists also like to contact someone running a classified ad on a web site and say they will send them a money order for well over the

amount, and would they please ship them the item and return the excess money, please? Of course, the money order turns out to be fake, so the shipper is out the item, the shipping cost and the returned money as well. Since often the perpetrator is in another country, there is no recourse. The often-received African letter is another one that promises that the sender will deposit a million or two in your account in order to hide it from a military dictatorship’s criminal regime. This is another scam that preys upon the trusting natures of many Americans. Courier readers are reminded to throughly investigate anything like this that sounds bogus with law enforcement before you, too, become a victim. Don’t trust an email, no matter who it says it comes from.

So let’s be realistic. We all know the Forest Service has little, if any, extra funds to do what has to be done, let alone any new projects. I feel that a small day use fee on major weekends would not be a deterrent to those who use the lake. I can’t think of any place where one goes to enjoy themselves that doesn’t cost something, whether it be parking or entrance fee or donation. The one thing I would like to see would be some sort of guarantee that those fees collected for the use of the lake be used solely for lake purposes. I am sure there were be some who agree and some who disagree, so please e-mail your thoughts to me at office@kernrivercourier.com. And please give me some time because I only go into the office once a week. Tuesday of this week I went out fishing for crappie in the trees near North Fork Marina. Either I have lost my touch or it was just one of those days. My friend and I had little success. When the fish start biting better, I will appreciate them a lot more! Q: I have four Jackie Gleason and the Honeymooners comics, which were issued during the 1950s during the run of the hit TV show. I suspect they might be worth a few bucks. What do you think? -- Bill, Canandaigua, N.Y. A: The series was published in June and July of 1956 by DC comics. Now for the drum roll. The first in the series is valued at $1,300 by the Standard Guide to Golden Age Comics by Alex G. Malloy and Stuart W. Wells III (Krause). The second is worth $700 and the other 10 are in the $500 to $600 range. *** Q: I have a clock that is marked Royal Bonn. I am more curious about the manufacturer than I am the potential value of the clock, since it is an heirloom and I have no plans to sell. -Beth, Santa Fe, N.M. A: I had a difficult time tracking down any information about Royal Bonn but did eventually find a few facts in Kovels' Antiques and Collectibles by Ralph and Terry Kovel (Random House Reference). Royal Bonn is the 19th and 20th century trade name used by Franz Anton Mehlem, who operated a

pottery firm in Bonn, Germany, which began in 1836 and continued until 1931. According to the Kovels, the factory was purchased by Villeroy & Boch in 1921 and closed a decade later. Nine clocks are valued in Kovels' guide ranging in price from $168 to $3,250. *** Q: I have a copy of "A New Gazetteer or Geographical Dictionary of North America and the West Indies" by Bishop Davenport. What is it worth? -- Marvin, Willmar, Minn. A: The original edition of Bishop Davenport's book was published in 1833 and has recently been reissued. In order to determine if you have a first, early or modern edition, you should contact a competent book dealer. The reprint sells for about $25. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to antiquequestions@aol.com. It was a full house on Oct. 7 as the Forest Service presented information about their Piutes Travel Management Plan.

Letter to the Courier Dear Kern River Courier, If anyone believes the Kern River Valley is only a tourist destination point, let me set you straight! Our beautiful valley is packed full of caring, concerned friends! How do I know this? Let me tell you. My grandson was killed by a drunk driver Labor Day Weekend. He was only 24 years old and to be married the following Saturday. Within a couple of hours after I received the devastating news, people were calling and dropping by to offer their prayers and thoughts. Food appeared on my doorstep! There were offers of financial help for my trip to Washington to be with my family. Upon my return a week later, my mailbox was full of cards and they are still coming in. My email was packed with messages. Wherever I go, there is always someone giving me a hug and saying how sorry they are for our great loss. There are too many folks to thank here, but I do want to mention: The Golden Girls, Kern River Valley Historical Society, all my neighbors at Sierra Meadows in Kernville, the many churches who offered us up in prayer, family members who live here and my long time friends whom I have shared so much with over the years. There is no place like home and I am so thankful I am here where people care! I thank each and every one of you, for myself and my family. Barbara Hinkey Kernville

Talking About Real Estate

Clean up that yard! Matt Freeman Kern River Courier Columnist

Oftentimes when a seller lists a property, they pay close attention to what the home looks like on the inside. They make sure the paint is in good shape, that the carpets are clean, dishes are put away, on and on. However, what some people fail to realize is the importance of curb appeal. Trust me, it is very Matt Freeman important. We all know the old adage "Looks can be deceiving" is true. However, when it comes to selling a property, looks are very important, because looks lead to perception. Several times I have shown homes to clients in nice areas that the clients pass on because of how the home looks. Specifically, the feel of the home is very important and it does not matter how nice a home is on the inside if people don't want to walk through the front door in the first place because of how the home looks from the outside. One thing I personally really like about living up here in the Kern River Valley is the fact that this area is unincorporated, meaning we are not a city, we are under county jurisdiction only. So we do not have many Home Owner's Associations or specific city rules regarding how our homes have to

look. If you have ever lived in a condo complex or an HOA, trust me, I know you understand what I am talking about. Your home has to be only certain colors, trees must be trimmed a certain way, grass mowed or else, only one car in the driveway, stuff like that. We don't have that in the valley, and it is great. However, the flip side is that often people abuse the privilege. We all have had the neighbor with the messy yard that he refuses to clean, and it reflects on the street and the neighborhood. In extreme circumstances it can even make it difficult for a seller to sell their home. It is even worse when the seller is the one with the messy yard. (Kinda sounds like a Redneck Joke.) Basically, if you have to mow the grass to see the house you have for sale, you might be a Redneck! So, as I have advised so many times before, if you are selling your home, walk through the property inside and out like you were a buyer. Pretend you were buying the place. Look at what stands out to you, what do you NOT like about your home. Ask yourself those questions, and clean up what you as a buyer would not like. Trust me, you will be much closer to selling your home. Matt Freeman is a Realtor with Freeman’s Lakeside Realty (760) 379-5915 or cell 223-0880. His column is not intended to replace legal advice.

10,848 According to the National Newspaper Association, the average community newspaper is read by 2.26 readers in a household. The Kern River Courier circulates 5,000 copies. There are minimal leftovers, about 100-200 copies. That means at least 4,800 copies are picked up each week. So ... if 4,800 copies are read by 2.26 readers each, that means that each issue of the Courier is read by 10,848 readers!

17, 356 The NNA also reports that the average reader of a community newspaper picks up and reads the newspaper 1.6 times. So ... if each of those 10,848 readers reads the Courier 1.6 times, that’s 17,356 times your ad is seen!

Courier chuckle of the week: “Some see the glass as half-empty, some see the glass as half-full. I see the glass as too big. -- George Carlin

Salome’s Stars ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be growing impatient with a situation that seems to resist efforts to resolve it. But staying with it raises the odds that you'll find a way to a successful resolution. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Travel and kinship are strong in the Bovine's aspect this week. This would be a good time to combine the two and take a trip to see family members. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A colleague could make a request you're not comfortable with. If so, say so. Better to disappoint someone by sticking with your principles than disappoint yourself if you don't. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The Moon Child's ability to adapt to life's ebbs and flows helps you deal with the changes that you might confront at work or at home, or both. Things settle down by week's end. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It's a good week for Leos and Leonas to get some long-outstanding business matters resolved. Then go ahead and plan a family getaway weekend with the mate and the cubs. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A possible workplace change seems promising. If you decide to look into it, try not to form an opinion on just a small part of the picture: Wait for the full image to develop. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A newcom-

er helps keep things moving. There might be some bumpy moments along the way, but at least you're heading in the right direction. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You could be pleasantly surprised by how a decision about one thing opens up an unexpected new option. Also, assistance on a project could come from a surprising source. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) With more information to work with, you might now be able to start the process that could lead to a major change. Reserve the weekend for family and friends. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This could be a good time to begin gathering information that will help you turn that long-held idea into something substantive. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) That new challenge might carry some surprises. But you should be able to handle them using what you already know. That new supporter should be there to lend assistance. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Someone might be trying to disguise his or her true motives. But the perceptive and perspicacious Pisces should have no problem finding the truth in all that rhetoric. BORN THIS WEEK: You can always rely on your people skills to help you find solutions to problems others often give up on. c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Kern River Courier Our Valley, Our Earth

San Joaquin Valley a record holder Ron Bolyard Kern River Courier Columnist

This diagram is a complete picture of the entire present day San Joaquin Valley of California. The legend shows the various features that have been geologically built, destroyed, deposited and reconfigured as compared to those features created, built and Ron Bolyard maintained by the human species. The cross hatched area is the extent of the SJV from the base of the Coastal Ranges to the western boundary of the Sierra Nevada Batholith. Alluvium are sedimentary deposits created by the erosion of the surrounding mountains into the basin. The drainage boundary east of the SJV is the crest of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It can thus be inferred that the majority of the SJV sediments were sourced by the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The San Joaquin Valley is the single

largest continuous fertile valley on the earth. As I have tried to convey, its construction was created by the work of a very unique set of geological tectonics and processes through billions of years! I hope that this gives the reader a better perspective and understanding of massive amount of time it takes to build something good and productive! UNTIL NEXT WEEK … Ron Bolyard is a retired geologist and has developed an “acute interest” in the geology of the southern Sierra Nevada since he moved here in 1999.

Health Insurance Matters

More time is needed to study Harry P. Thal Kern River Courier Columnist

There is a hole in your clippings if you keep my articles in a scrapbook. I know that several insurance agents and medical offices keep my column, and I missed publishing last week. I had written an article warning the business community of a new IRS regulation which would require reporting the value of health insurance Harry Thal on the W-2 forms for earnings beginning January 1, 2011. In effect, this would be reported for the 2012 tax filing. On Oct. 13 the Obama administration's Stephanie Cutter announced a one-year delay in this provision, stating the additional time was needed to allow employers enough time to comply with the requirement. As the administration's communications leader on implementing the new health care law, she went on to state that Americans "will absolutely not pay taxes on these benefits," even though "for months, opponents of health reform have falsely claimed that the Affordable Care Act would lead to the taxation of healthcare benefits." plan had some marked increases in cost per month. Most notably is the increase for the people on Medicare and Medi-Cal. These dual eligible beneficiaries are entitled to a "discount" on the prescription drug plans. In California they get an allowance of $32.40, which makes some of the plans available to them at no cost. While there were 8 plans to pick from in 2010, in 2011, due to the increases in cost, there are only 4 plans available. If the medication they need is not available on these plans, they will need to select a more costly plan, and pay the difference in monthly premium. For those people on Medicare who have a "stand alone" Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) they will find that while the cost of the coverage is higher, in some cases, the benefits are richer. One example is the brand name drugs for cholesterol Lipitor and Crestor will have a refill pharmacy co-pay of $0 in 2010. Now granted, the monthly premiums for the insurance plans are over $80 per month, but in some situations, this will reduce overall expenses. Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker. It was 1877. For two years Wells Fargo’s chief of detectives, James B. Hume (tops in his field), had been on the trail of a nameless high- California Joe wayman. Hume usually could tell who did a stagecoach robbery just by examining the scene of the crime. This new crimimal, however, was no ordinary criminal. Three California robberies had the same similiarities. They were all pulled by a deep-voiced man in a Ku Klux Klan-type mask who never fired his shotgun or rode a horse. This time he left a note. “I’ve labored long and hard for bread, for honor and for riches, but on my corns too long you’ve tread, you fine-haired sons of bitches.” The note was signed “Black Bart.” A year passed. On July 28, 1878, a masked gunman appeared from a clump of bushes and demanded, “Throw down the box!” This time his note read, “Let come what will, I'll try it on. My condition can't be worse. And if there's money in that box, 'Tis munny in my purse.” Wells Fargo, the state of California and the U.S. Postal Service chipped in to put an $800 price on his head.

Over the next five years he pulled off 23 more robberies. Black Bart usually robbed stages that carried no passengers. But in at least one instance, there was a pretty traveler who had to throw down her purse. Bart was most gentlemanly, returning the pocketbook unopened, and commenting that he only wished to rob Wells Fargo and the mail. They finally caught him on Nov. 3, 1883. They had found a handkerchief with a laundry mark belonging to a San Francisco laundry, which was visited by a special operative. This led them to the elegant residence of C.E. Bolton. At the time of his arrest, Mr. Bolton was impeccably dressed, carrying a little cane and wearing a derby hat and a diamond pin. Of course, he was indeed Black Bart. Bolton was born Charles E. Boles in New York, around 1830. He had learned to frequent the hangouts of police and Wells Fargo agents and always knew when the richest shipments went out. Hume made a deal in which Bolton would confess only to the last robbery and receive a light sentence. After 4-1/2 years at San Quentin, Bolton walked out and was never heard from again.
