Cerro Coso receives healthy grant Mike Devich Kern River Courier A consortium of California community colleges filed a grant proposal that resulted in a $5 million helping hand for the Kern Community College District for health career education. Cerro Coso College, part of the KCCD, will receive $1.5 million of the grant, part of which will be used for equipping an interactive television classroom at the Kern River Valley campus. Cerro Coso College is based in Ridgecrest and has campuses as far away as Mammoth Lakes. According to Valerie Karnes, Dean of Career Technical Education for Cerro Coso, the money "could (also) lead to an LVN program at the Cerro Coso Kern River Valley campus in the near future." Additionally, said Karnes, CCCC will be able to hire additional instructors and purchase simulation equipment for nursing skills labs at all the Cerro Coso campuses. The money is part of $500 million in grant funds awarded to community colleges across the country to use for healthcare career education. The consortium is composed of community colleges throughout the San Joaquin Valley and high desert. Cerro Coso College, Bakersfield College and Porterville College make up the Kern Community College District. "This grant affords Cerro Coso an incredible opportunity to meet the increased needs for skilled workers in the healthcare profession," continued Karnes. It is not known how this will affect Kern Valley High School's ECHO program, which helps train high school students to get ready for healthcare jobs. people

erating $218 million in payroll and $165 million in state and local taxes. The Board of Trade will provide an on-line tutorial designed to guide hopefuls through the application process. This will familiarize potential recipients with the program, present new guidelines and points of emphasis, and answer questions about the application procedures. It will now take the place of remote workshops held each of the past four years due to a steady decline in the number of people able participating in the workshop sessions. Hook said, "Each grant cycle has its own unique goals and guidelines. The tutorial allows us to explain what Supervisors are looking for and how the process works while making it as easy as possible to apply." Other on-line tools, including an application template and sample application, are also available via the web site at www.VisitKern.com. Applications are due no later than November 14. Supervisors awarded $100,000 for use in Kern County tourism marketing and promotion. The Board of Supervisors this week gave unanimous approval to 2011-12 guidelines, authorizing up to $100,000, for the the Tourism Promotion Grant Program, providing money for efforts intended to attract traveler spending. The money will assist qualified groups in their efforts to attract visitors to the region. The program has provided 225 grants totaling $1,775,000 since 2001. One significant change approved this year was that the pool of potential recipients was increased to include all Kern County 501c organizations promoting tourism. Previously the program had been limited to 501c3 and 501c6 organizations. Tourism is a $1.12 billion-a-year industry for Kern County, according to figures provided by the California Travel and Tourism Commission. The industry supports nearly 14,000 local jobs while gen-

Goliath trees fall in Sequoias
On Friday, September 30th, two giant sequoia trees fell side by side across the Trail of 100 Giants, a popular recreation site in the Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument. The Trail was immediately closed for public safety, and is expected to remain closed for a couple of weeks while Forest officials assess hazards. Forest officials have scheduled a public meeting on Saturday October 22nd to invite people to look at the downed trees, assess for themselves the situation, and discuss their thoughts on what can be done to restore the Trail of 100 Giants. The meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the trailhead parking lot; located along the Western Divide Highway (107) please plan for winter weather. We realize this is an inconvenience to our visitors and the businesses they support and the need to expedite the process to have this recreational opportunity available to the public as soon as possible. For latest information please contact the Western Divide Ranger District at 559-539-2607 Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Things I Have Noticed...
A Stranger at our Door Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist It was about 7 a.m. I had just taken my shower, and was sitting at the table reading the paper and having a cup of coffee. My wife was cooking breakfast and the day looked good. Middleworth I was reading an article about home invasion and the ruses crooks use to get into your home. One of them is to walk up to the house, knock and when the owner opens the door, he gets a gun stuck in his face and is ordered back into the house and is robbed and often beaten or even killed. As I was reading the article aloud to my wife there came a knock at the door. With the article fresh in my mind, I was apprehensive about someone knocking on our door so early in the morning, so I looked through the peep hole in the front door with one hand gripping a baseball bat. I couldn’t see anything. I opened the door and even then saw no one. So I went onto the porch and looked around. Nobody. I went back inside, bolted the door and went back to my meal. My wife had just placed a plate of scrambled eggs and bacon in
front of me when the knock came again. And again I looked through the peephole and saw no one. Now I was concerned. I knew that some rowdy kids had recently moved into the house above us. I figured it was them, trying to see how mad I would get. I took another look around and still didn’t see anyone. I went back inside, and started to eat my eggs and bacon when the knock came again. This time I grabbed the bat, went out the back door and crept silently around the side of the house, knowing that when I surprised those rowdy kids I would scare the bedickens out of them. As I rounded the corner of the house, I noticed the culprit sitting on a porch chair as if he didn’t have a care in the world. Brazenly, while I watched, he went to the wall next to the door and rapped as loud as he could. I, at the same time laid down the bat, picked up a broom and swatted at that damn woodpecker as he made one final rap and flew into the tree across the yard. I yelled at that bird and told him that next time I would use a bat and not a wimpy broom. The woodpecker gave one last rat a tat tat and flew away. Scared? I don't think so, but that bird better beware! Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.

Announcements Continued from page 3 classroom. Each year since 2006, SCE has reached more than 4,000 schools in its service territory, distributing 187,000 booklets. The materials help teach students how to be safe around electrical appliances, including how to avoid contact with utility power lines and what to do in case of a utility emergency. They include customizable lesson plans, tests and worksheets. SCE also has a Speakers Bureau that will give free presentations, in many languages, on electrical safety, among other topics, to schools, service clubs, business and faith-based organizations and senior and consumer groups. To learn more about Speakers Bureau, visit www.sce.com/speakersbureau or call 626-302-7892

Father-son story moving Previews of new DVDs by Sam Struckhoff PICKS of the WEEK “A Better Life” (PG-13) -This poignant drama follows Carlos (Demian Bichir), an immigrant and a single-father in Los Angeles. Working Johnny Depp hard as a landscaper, Carlos’ sole motivation is to give his teenage son, Luis, all the opportunities he never had. With artful directing and a career-highlight performance by Bichir, trimming trees becomes a glimpse at another life, and buying a pickup truck embodies the first step to a new future. Without any trick moves or Hollywood silliness, the father-son journey plays out with a compassionate tone. “A Better Life” humanizes murky issues without social messages. “Page One: A Year Inside The New York Times” (R) -- In a turbulent time of new technology and trailblazing trends, one of the most respected newspapers in the world can hear the barbarians outside the gates. This documentary takes a multidimensional look at The New York Times, its staff and the myriad winds of change blowing down its venerable doors. It’s not just busi-
DOG of the WEEK “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” (PG-13) -- Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is pushed back in front of the camera to stumble through more tropical locales for this fourth installment of the rapidly deteriorating “Pirates of the Caribbean” series. This time, Captain Sparrow is forced into service with the legendary Blackbeard and a beauty named Angelica (Penelope Cruz). That’s about where the writing staff gave up, because everything beyond that is a mess of a paper-thin plots and here-we-go-again adventure. Way back in 2003, the first “Pirates” was an exhilarating surprise of a cinematic journey. Since then, each movie has pulled that magic apart by the seams. Even the additions of the gorgeous Cruz as a new romance and the menacing Ian McShane as Blackbeard couldn’t keep this one afloat. Like the mutterings of Sparrow himself, this franchise has descended into an incoherent jumble of sailorisms and fading charm. © 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Talking About Real Estate
The more things change Matt Freeman Kern River Courier Columnist
Recently I saw a news report regarding the National Housing Market on TV. The reporter was talking about the fact that recently, the Real Estate Market Matt Freeman in some areas of the country has stabilized or even gone up in value. Just certain areas, not nationally. They listed parts of Texas, Oklahoma, the San Jose area in California, and Virginia of all places. They did not really talk about why these places have seen stability or upticks in value, just the fact that they have. Well, when you examine why these areas have much more stable housing markets, it is simple to see why, these places are where the jobs are! That is the key. When you move to a place and have a good job and a steady paycheck, you need a place to live. If you live there already and have a good job and you see how low Real Estate prices are in the area, you want to buy a bigger house or an investment property. A local example of this trend is Bakersfield. Recently, another huge Natural Gas deposit was found out in the Taft Oilfields. The oil and service companies are hiring down there, and have been and that trend is gonna continue as they seek to take advantage of this new natural resource and build a new power-
plant. The answer is jobs folks, that is how we are gonna get this Real Estate market back on the right path. Gonna get political for a minute on this, just have to in this issue. Government bailouts of the Banking Industry have not worked, just check the stock market and the fact that Bank of America is slowly imploding despite all of the money they have been given. Growth of Government Jobs is not the answer either, these are of course good jobs, but government jobs account for approx 10% of the economy, while Private Sector Jobs account for approx 90%. Democrats complain that we don't make anything here anymore, they are right. Republicans compain that business and corporations are are saddled with high taxes and regulation, well they are right too. Our politicians need to erase the letters behind their titles, get together in a big room and fall in love with this country again. Forget party politics and your distain for each other, get together and work together, there is a lot that can be accomplished, because there is a lot that needs to be done, and we need brave, common sense politicians who do not sway with the breeze to do that for our economy and our country. Til that happens, sit back and watch the insanity and hold on to your wallet! Matt Freeman is a Realtor with Freeman’s Lakeside Realty (760) 3795915 or cell 223-0880. His column is not intended to replace legal advice.
