Fairview trail bridge to close until Nov. 1 The Fairview suspension bridge, a pedestrian trail bridge, will be closed for repairs from Sept. 16 until Nov. 1. The Sequoia National Forest will be repairing the bridge, which is located 16 miles north of Kernville. The bridge crosses the Kern River on the Whiskey Flat Trail. Routine maintenance and painting will be conducted on and near the bridge, as well as correcting a design flaw that is causing stress on the abutments and concrete supports. For further information please contact Cheryl Bauer, Kern River Ranger District Recreation Manager at (760) 376-3781, extension 630.
Temporary space crops up for Farmer’s Market Mike Devich Kern River Courier
The Farmer’s Market will soon take up its permanent spot at the Nuui Cunni Indian Culture Center, organizers say, but while final paperwork is being done the market will move into a temporary space in Lake Isabella.
Bob Lowe and Ellen Schafhauser are sponsoring a temporary Farmers Market “until the Forest Service can see its way clear to allow the Nuui Cunni Farmers Market to meet in the Forest Service parking lot,” they said in an e-mailed announcement.

There were hot dogs and refreshments available at the Democratic Headquarters grand opening party. Their headquarters is located in the old Chuck Richards Whitewater building. The Republican Headquarters is located in the building next to Click Editorial Realty. They will be holding their grand opening this Sunday, Sept. 14, at 1:30 p.m., with punch and cookies. Although reportedly there has already been some venom displayed locally between the two opposing groups, the Kern River Courier would like to urge members of both parties to play nice and be respectful of each other. In America we can disagree, and that is what we’re all about. Sometimes the mudslinging can get pretty nasty between the candidates. But we’re not the candidates. For the public to act like children toward each other is not the way we should be handling this election. The presidential election has become like a professional sporting contest –

Kernville home of headquarters for both major political parties n this presidential election year, picturesque Kernville looks like almost a stereotypical example of small-town America, with headquarters for both major political parties opening in storefronts right down the street from each other. The Republican Headquarters opened first, on May 30, at 11707-1/2 Kernville Road. Then last week was the grand opening of the Democratic Headquarters at 11306 Kernville Road.

Things I Have Noticed
...
Many unhappy returns Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist
I have a hunch that there are a lot of folks out there who, like me, buy stuff and then later find it isn't what they want. The next thing is to return it. And that's where I, and perhaps some of you, run into the stone wall of the erstwhile return. I don't know what it is and where the hang up comes from, but I would rather walk through broken glass barefooted Rod than to go into a Middleworth store and tell them I want to return something. I've noticed that even if I have the receipt, I still don't like taking something back. Perhaps I am fearful that the clerk will look down at me and think, "Well, here comes an old fussbudget." Perhaps I'm afraid they'll blame me for the defective item. I can just hear the comment "Well, Mack, this is the first time we've ever had one of these gizmos fail. Did you damage the product in a vain attempt to install it without reading the directions? Yours is the first ever returned!" Or I'll think that maybe the clerk will ask for my identification, look at it and say, "Are you sure this is you?" The few times (two) that I finally
got the nerve to make a return were non-events. I handed over the purchase, showed the receipt, signed a return form and got credit in one instance and cash in the other. In my mind these two experiences were anomalies; if I try again either there will come a knock on my door from the Return Police wanting further information before I receive my $5.47 refund, or worse yet, the next return that I bravely try will be fraught with store-inspired road bumps. In my mind I can hear the clerk as she paws through the morass of cables and gizmos, saying, "Well sir, where is the left-handed frammistan that should be in the package? And why couldn't you pack the contents like it was originally boxed?" I will have no answer for that, because no one on God’s green earth can put the cardboard and foam around the product like it came from the factory. And probably I'm returning the item because it didn't have a darn frammistan in the first place! I'll just let my wife make the returns. She won't take any guff and they'd better look out before tangling with her. She's not afraid of anyone and returns for her are a piece of cake. (Lemon, my favorite.) Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program and coordinator for the Lake Patrol volunteers.

Let’s Go Fishing
Engineers Point is a good spot Jack Bustamante Kern River Courier Columnist
Have you fished on the lake lately? A few trout are starting to bite. Water temperatures Trout are starting to cool down a will little and the become trout will become more more active along active the shoreline. along the Catfish are still biting shorequite well. line. One local fisherman landed 23 of them on an overnighter at the end of Evans Rd. A few 1 to 2 pounders and a few between 7 and 8 pounds. They were biting on just about anything. There’s been a lot of good fishing action at the very tip of Engineers Point. Lots of nice catfish, some pretty good size trout, tons of blue gill and even a few good size crappie have been caught off the boats hanging around out there. Trout fishing on the upper Kern River is still going strong. I’ve been scouting out different spots I’ve never fished and let

The Kern Valley Museum in Kernville is the repository for many old-time photos and displays of the valley’s past.
Must See: Kern Valley Museum The Kern River Valley is the ancestral home of the Tubatulabal people, who have lived here for hundreds of years. In the 1840s, the rapidly expanding United States was exploring the West and discovered the little valley tucked in the Sierra Nevada. A decade later, prospectors looking for gold poured over the Greenhorn Mountains from the west and over Walker Pass to the east, establishing homes and towns. Old Kernville and Old Isabella are now under Isabella Lake, but many of the buildings were moved to new Kernville and new Isabella (renamed Lake Isabella) in the 1950s. Older towns and buildings are scattered throughout the valley, each with their own story. Come to the Kern Valley Museum to see historic photos of what the valley looked like before the lake. (It’s actually a reservoir, but who’s counting.) The museum houses hundreds of exhibits and artifacts from the coming of the electrical power companies in the early 1900s to the days of filming Western movies here to the idyllic days of cattle ranching and cowboying to the bucolic place it is today, pointing back to a simpler day and time. The Kern Valley Museum is free to visit, but donations are welcome and appreciated. The museum is supported by the proud citizens of the Kern River Valley, who have formed a historical society that is 800 members strong. The museum, on Big Blue Road in Kernville, is open Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Kern River Courier

Celebrity Extra Raven from ‘Cosby’ still a big star By Cindy Elavsky
Q: There are programs on TV that I like to watch, like "NCIS" and "Law & Order"; however, most of the dialogue is drowned out by loud music. I sit watching with the remote in my hand turning the volume up and down. Am I the only one bothered by this? -Charlie, Fort Myers, Fla. A: No, Charlie, you're not the only one. I am printing your letter, not because I have an answer to your quandary -- although I wish I did -- but because I get many letters every week expressing the same sentiment. I also have noticed this volume problem, especially with my newer TV that is in my living room. I have tried adjusting every possible different level in the television's set-up, to no avail. Until someone addresses this problem, keep your hand on the remote.
Q: Raven-Symone, who played Olivia on "The Cosby Show," was one of the most talented actresses for her age that I had ever seen. Is she still acting? Her talent was absolutely marvelous. -Virginia S., Greenville, Raven-Symone Mich. A: From 2003-2007, RavenSymone was the star of the Disney Channel show "That's So Raven," which was the highest-rated and longest-running original series in the channel's history. It spawned a number of merchandising products -- soundtracks, dolls, DVDs and video games -- as well as a successful spin-off called "Cory in the House." She also starred in the movies "Cheetah Girls" and "Cheetah Girls 2" and has released four solo albums. This fall, she is taking her musical act on the road, touring at various state fairs. ***

Generic drugs not always best under insurance

the counter rights to this name were sold to Johnson & Johnson by Pfizer. Annual sales of Zyrtec is estimated at $1.3 billion. Just remember, some people were just paying a small copay along with their insurance. Once it is over-the-counter, it is not covered by insurance, and the cost could be a higher outof-pocket cost. Remember Claritin? Here are some brand name drugs which have recently become available as a generic. These will save you and your insurance company money. A switch could be very significant to people with Medicare Part D, as by lowering your costs, you may escape from the donut hole. They are Ambien (zolpidem),

The coverage we expect from our health insurance is very flexible. Most people expect that what they received in benefits last refill will be the same next time when they go to the pharmacy. This is actually far from the truth, as things are always in a state of flux. For instance, generics. Very often, brand name drugs lose their protection under patent laws, and generic drugs become available. Once there is a generic, your brand name drug might be raised to a tier three, as the generic might well be introduced to a tier one. The co-pays for a tier one drug are
often free or $5 or $10. It is worth checking with your physician to see if a generic is available. The FDA has recently approved a generic form of Lamisil, the nail fungus treatment. Those taking this medication may find the brand name co-pay Harry Thal cost increasing now that there is a lower cost alternative. Zyrtec, the prescription antihistamine, lost its patent protection last December. The over

California Joe’s Country Living
Book features Louisiana character California Joe Kern River Courier Columnist
You order a coffee. You sit at a table and watch pretty girls coming in for their mid-morning coffee break. And you think about the column you have to write. Then you get up and head for the mystery section of the bookstore. And there it is, the latest James Lee Burke thriller paperback, “The Tin Roof California Joe Blowdown.” I’m willing to pay to read any Burke book about anything! Of course, they’re always the same. A New Orleans ex-cop now running a bait and fishing camp in New Iberia, La. His name is Dave Robicheaux. He’s always in some kind of trouble. This time it’s a quartet of criminals who hijack a rescue boat from a drug-addicted expriest at the height of a storm. Then they steal a gangster’s hidden fortune, when they find themselves confronted by our hero Dave Robicheaux. He’s unlike any hero you’ve met before. He’s a reformed drunk and pill popper. And every now and then he goes somewhat wacko and does outlandish things to people who get in his way. I’ve read every book Burke has ever written. I’ve told folks,
Recipes for Dummies by Bodfish Bob Bodfish Bob's Chicken Casserole
“You got to read this guy!” That’s because he comes from my part of the country. One reviewer said that Burke is “beautifully atmospheric.” Maybe that’s why I loved to live in the French Quarter of New Orleans. That describes the city too. *** I had planned to go down to Louisiana this fall. But Miz Sue totaled our new Honda Fit when the cruise control didn’t disengage. Now I’ve bought a threeyear-old Subaru and I could well go in that car if things work out. Well sir, I’m back home and the phone rings. It’s Jason from the Subaru dealer in Bakersfield wanting me to come look at an ‘09 Subaru. I don’t have the heart to tell him I just bought an ‘05. Besides, I want to see what the ‘09 looks like. At the rate we’re going through automobiles, I might soon be in the market again. And after I see the new car in Bakersfield, I can go back to Barnes & Noble and sit at my little indoor cafe near all those yummy books I’ve yet to read. The more I read the new James Lee Burke book, the more I think I’m like Dave Robicheaux. Outwardly rough. Inwardly a pussy cat. Talking About Real Estate A title search can ruin your day
Take a friend and yourself to the movies on us! When you and your friend subscribe to the Kern River Courier*
for you
Every few weeks or so I like to do a little article about the often unconsidered part of any real estate transaction, the escrow and title. In the years I have been a real estate agent I have run into several situations that were Matt Freeman scary when it comes to title issues. However, the worst thing is the fact that they could have been easily prevented. One of the biggest issues I have seen and I am sure every real estate agent has seen is someone wanting to sell a piece of property that they do not legally own. Suprised? Don't be; it happens all of the time. Let me explain what escrow and title do. Escrow is a neutral third party that holds all funds for a transaction and makes sure that everything is done legally per federal, state and local law. It has other roles, but that is the biggest. Title, which usually is ordered and completed in an escrow office, concerns the property itself, who owns it, and title issues thereof. See why they are so important?
Yes!
If you read all of my articles and get nothing from them except this, listen up. Don't ever do a real estate transaction without escrow and title. Whether you are using a real estate agent or not. People often will not do an escrow for two reasons: they are too cheap to want to pay for it or they have something to hide. Oftentimes both. Here’s a quick true example of why to do things the right way: Party A wants to sell vacant land to Party B. Both agree to a selling price that is way below market value. Party B sees a great deal. Party B gives a cashier's check to Party A and Party B takes full possession of the property. They want to grade the land and re-sell the property as an investment. So Party B spends thousands on grading and improvements and then puts the land on the market. Real Estate Agent lists the land, finds a buyer, deal enters escrow. Guess what? Escrow says Party B does not own the land nor did Party A ever own it! Someone just got ripped off. Do escrow and title! Matt Freeman is a Realtor with Freeman’s Lakeside Realty (760) 379-5915 or cell 223-0880. His column is not intended to replace legal advice.

Sequoia Youth Summit to do volunteer projects on public lands Tina Terrell Sequoia National Forest Supervisor
Richard Louv wrote the following in “Last Child in the Woods – Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder.” “…at the very moment that the bond is breaking between the young and the natural world, a growing body of research links our mental, physical, and spiritual health directly to our association with nature – in positive ways.” Now is the time to get our young people out into the woods to not only connect them to nature, but to also work with them to become citizen stewards to take care of the land that is ours to treasure.
The first annual “My Forest” Summit for junior high school age youth is the first outdoor event orchestrated by a new partnership. The goal is to combine outdoor fun with environmental education and stewardship activities. The Sequoia Youth Summit began with the Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument’s outreach efforts to connect children, youth, and their families to the land. This Youth Summit is invested in building the next generation of citizen stewards, and instilling a lifelong love and connection to the land. We are targeting middle school students in 7th, 8th, and 9th grades to experience the wonders of the Sierra Nevada. Amazing outdoor experi-
ences build the bridges for the next generation of citizen stewards to care for our public lands. Beginning on Saturday, Sept. 27, 100-150 students will participate in volunteer projects on public lands. The projects include planting trees at Lake Success and at the Trail of 100 Giants in the Sequoias; repairing trails at Tulare County’s SCICON Environmental Education Center (scienceand conservation); river enhancement along the Tule River; improving pond habitats for Western Pond Turtles at Circle J Ranch; collecting and planting seeds from native plants along riparian areas; and building and installing wildlife nesting boxes. Schools and youth organizations
are invited to send teams of 7th – 9th grade students (up to 10 students per team.) Adult chaperones must accompany each team of students. The school or organization must provide transportation to and from the MyForest Summit at Veterans Memorial Park in Springville. Activities begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at approximately 3:30 p.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Springville for fun, closing presentations, refreshments and prizes. Space is limited so please call for early registration. For more information contact Mary Cole, Landscape Architect at the Sequoia National Forest Supervisor’s Office at (559) 7841500.

Voices of Faith
Are you doing life well? Clarence Semonious Pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Fellowship
I expect that when I was in a class, learning all about sermons, mine was not the only class to hear the professor comfort his students with the statement that we should not worry about our first sermon because the 22nd chapter of Numbers demonstrated that we would be able to speak God’s word. With that introduction, he related the account of a man named Balaam. The king of Moab, Balak, asked this man Balaam to curse Israel so that he might defeat them. Balaam’s reply was even if the king, “were Semonious to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the command of the LORD my God to do less or more.” Numbers 22:18. Unfortunately, the idea of wealth appealed to Balaam so much that his desire got him into trouble. (Remember this one? – “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.” 1 Timothy 6:10.) Balaam rode his donkey to talk with the king, but the donkey could see what Balaam could not; there was an angel with a sword blocking his path. When the donkey would not go, Balaam beat it repeatedly. Then “…the LORD opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?” Numbers 22:28. This proved, the professor
said, that any donkey can do our job. Our task would be to work so that we would do it well. There are many more ways used to determine if one is “doing it well,” than there are people – since many have one criterion for themselves and another for others. I still use one principle I learned as a firefighter: first protect life-safety, and then conserve property. Depending on one’s position, life-safety can include relationships. For instance, the word “team” may include coworkers, the husband, wife and children, or even public welfare. Two passages that could be used as a personal test whether one is doing life well: First, “Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.” 1 Timothy 6:6-9 – Second, let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.… Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:1-2, 4-6.

Our Valley, Our Earth
Central Valley rich in oil Ron Bolyard Kern River Courier Columnist
The attached diagram demonstrates the immensity of the San Joaquin Valley. The central valley of California is extraordinarily rich in hydrocarbons, specifically oil, gas and conRon Bolyard densate (a mature, naturally distilled hydrocarbon that in maturity lies between dry natural gas and "black gold" crude). Depth of burial of very old sediments has caused the natural distillation process to progress rapidly. sure has forced the hydrocarbons to mature and migrate into trapping positions where they were discovered in the early 20th century. Many of the earth's gigantic oilproducing provinces are very similar to the San Joaquin Valley. Note the scale of the diagram in the lower right corner. The basin, at its deepest, is approximately 20,000 feet to bed rock. Also note that the valley is bounded by the San Andreas Fault on the west and the Kern River Fault on the east. Hopefully, this brief side tour of the San Joaquin Basin has given the reader a better perspective about the hydrocarbon generating history of central California. Until Next Week ... Ron Bolyard is a retired geologist and has developed an “acute interest” in the geology of the southern Sierra Nevada since he moved here in 1999.

Poll results swing in 2nd week Mike Devich Kern River Courier
Well, we have two weeks’ worth of poll answers folks have mailed in. The scores are rather surprising to us so far (we’ll do it one more week.) The big winners so far are “Hocus Focus” and “Henry.” “Hocus Focus” got more 5’s than anything else and no 1’s or 2’s (5 being best). “Henry” was very close behind. On the other end of the scale so far, with the most 1’s, is “Wishing Well.” Second place for most 1’s is a three-way tie between “Go Figure,” “Salome’s Stars” and “Weekly Sudoku.” The Sudoku rating being so low
is a surprise, since those are reportedly very popular nationwide. A few people really like it, though, giving it a 5, with only a few in between. “Junior Whirl” rated poorly, but that’s understandable since most adults wouldn’t read that one. Let us know if your children or grandchildren enjoy it, though. Another big surprise is the crossword puzzles. They’ve fallen in the rankings quite a bit. Crossword fans speak up; we may want to reduce it to one so that we can get another comic in. Many of you want to see “The Katzenjammer Kids” or “They’ll Do It Every Time,” and a few of you love “Popeye.” Get your votes in now!
The Great Kern River Courier Comics and Puzzles Poll Here’s your chance at voting for your favorites by giving them a full “5” and for slamming your least favorites by giving them a minute “1.”
