Kern River Ranger District end of summer update Seasonal campground closures are approaching fast as the summer winds to an end. The Forest Service and California Land Management will begin reducing the sites available for camping as demand drops in the fall. Both the Kernville and the Lake Isabella Office will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. starting September 9.

Supervisors allocate $100,000 in tourism grants Kern County Board of Supervisors offered a helping hand to the local visitor industry, giving unanimous approval to guidelines for the 2013-2014 Tourism Promotion Grant Program. Supervisors authorized up to $100,000 to assist qualified non-profit groups with efforts enticing visitors to bring their travel dollars to Kern County. The popular program has provided 259 grants totaling $1,975,000 since its inception in 2001. Applications are now being accepted from any Kern County 501c organization engaged in the promotion of tourism. The current cycle is focused on direct marketing, and projects seeking funds must show the potential to attract tourists - and their dollars -- to the region. Deadline for applications is 5 p.m. on October 18. Organizations may apply for up to $10,000 per project and may submit more than one project for consideration, but no single organization can receive more than $10,000 in total marketing assistance. Application materials are available online at visitkern.com/grants/. Also available are a sample application, a downloadable application template and complete program guidelines instructions.

Cemetery District fund raiser update The Kern River Valley Public Cemetery District continues to raise money for the alternative energy (solar) project. On Labor Day weekend, the District staff held a parking lot "yard sale" in front of the cemetery and raised a bit over $800 from the sale of items donated by members of the community. To date, the District has collected donations of $9,700 and adding to that the $12,000 the District Board of Trustees directed to the first stage of the project, leaves the funds needed to install solar panels on the cemetery office roof short by a mere $200. The next and final stage of the District's alternative energy project is to install solar panels at the well site for irrigation water delivery. The goal for this stage is to raise the $38,000. The energy produced by the panels installed on the office roof and at the well site will significantly reduce the electricity bills allowing the District to redirect approximately $7,000 annually into cemetery operations. The Cemetery District would like to remind the community that making a donation towards the project, no matter how small or large, will be used strictly for the solar project. If you would like to make a donation, you can call the cemetery office at 760-376-2189, or mail a donation to PO Box 215 Wofford Heights, CA 93285. You are also welcome to drop by the cemetery office (business hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday). The continued support of the community is deeply appreciated and any pledge towards the completion of the solar project is 100% tax deductible.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is recruiting those interested in a career as a wildlife officer. CDFW will accept applications for wildlife officer cadet from Sept. 1 through Nov. 27, 2013. California wildlife officers are charged with ensuring public safety, enforcing fish and wildlife laws, investigating illegal sales of wildlife, protecting the state from pollution, enforcing habitat protection laws, fighting illegal drug trafficking, keeping the homeland secure and responding during natural disasters. As peace officers, they have the authority to enforce all California laws, such as the Vehicle Code and Penal Code, and are federally deputized to enforce federal fish and wildlife laws. A typical day for a California wildlife officer is diverse as the state's fish and wildlife. Wildlife officers patrol ocean, desert, mountain and valley environments, as well as urban areas. They frequently work independently and conduct full-scale law enforcement investigations. Wildlife officers employ everything from all-terrain vehicles to jet skis and snowmobiles while on patrol and spend much of their typical day making contact with Californians in the great outdoors. CDFW has a dive team and utilizes K-9 partners as well. Environmental crimes and pollution incidents also fall under the purview of

wildlife officers. Annually, wildlife officers make contact with more than 295,000 people and issue more than 15,000 citations for violations of the law. Successful applicants will enter a 31week academy training program, followed by 16 weeks of field training, where they will work with a seasoned field training officer. CDFW's academy at Butte College is California Peace Officer Standards and Training certified. Cadets are trained as police officers with specific emphasis on wildlife, pollution and habitat protection. In California, with 159,000 square miles of habitat and wildlife diversity unequaled by any other state, the average wildlife officer has a patrol district of more than 600 square miles. The state has more than 1,100 miles of coastline, 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, 4,800 lakes and reservoirs, three desert habitat areas and scores of high mountain peaks. For information and requirements for wildlife officer cadets, visit www.dfg.ca.gov/enforcement/career/in dex.aspx. To apply, please use the State of California application form 678 at http://jobs.ca.gov/Profile/StateApplicati on. Applications must be postmarked no later than Nov. 27. Due to the number of inquiries, the CDFW and Law Enforcement Division request that prospective candidates review website materials before contacting them with questions.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Iron Man 3” (PG-13) — Marvel's metal hero is back in action. Billionaire inventor and not-so-secretly Iron Man, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is enjoying his money and new relationship with his assistant, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). Everything comes crumbling down when The Mandarin -- an updated villain from the comic-book series - starts to terrorize the USA. Just like in the last two, Downey Jr. is a nonstop current of pithy jokes and smugness -- both inside and out of his Iron Man suit. Stark is a powerful personality on his own, and this script takes full advantage while delivering more action than the previous installment. “"Redemption"” (R) — Joey Jones (Jason Statham) is an exspecial forces veteran of Afghanistan. Back in London, he lives on the streets and struggles with vivid flashbacks of the war. Despite his deep emotional scars, Joey is one hell of a tough guy and soon starts working as muscle for some local mobsters (it's OK, he's doing it for good reasons.) The movie is a little distracted, and gets pretty boring between bone-crunching fights. Statham is dealing with his own emotional damage, trying to woo a saintly nun (Agata Buzek) who works at

the soup kitchen, seeking vengeance for a girl he knew on the streets, AND trying to redeem himself in the eyes of his daughter's mother. This movie could have given Statham more room for what he does best -- over-the-top acts of thuggery and intense bruiserdom. “Unfinished Song” (PG-13) — Arthur (Terence Stamp) is one of those grumpy old fellas who wouldn't dream of doing anything whimsical or adventurous. When his darling wife (Vanessa Redgrave) insists that they attend a senior-citizen choir practice, Arthur gets even more curmudgeonly at the sounds of the recentera pop music being taught by the cutesy vocal teacher (Gemma Arterton.) You can see where this is going. Watch as his rigid demeanor is soothed by the healing power of music. It gets a little too sweet and sappy at times, but it's ultimately a fun story about opening up to new things. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Continued from page 1 Family Health Care enrollees who use the KVHD Rural Health Clinic for their primary physician outpatient services. The Rural Health Clinic serves as a major primary care and specialist physician service to the residents and visitors of the Kern River Valley. Presently it provides primary care, gynecology, general surgery, plastic surgery and cardiology on site. They also have behavioral medicine, neurology, rheumatology, and pain management through telemedicine services. During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2013, our Rural Health Clinic had 11,559 visits of which 2,100 were for Kern Family Health Care enrollees. KVHD plans to continue to improve their specialty services and are pleased to add on-site cardiology beginning in September 2013. It is their vision to provide all the necessary physician component non-invasive services required either on-site or through telemedicine. This will preclude patients from having to travel down the Kern River canyon to Bakersfield for these services. "We truly appreciate the generosity shared by Kern Health Systems to make our clinic acquisition a reality," states Tim McGlew, KVHD Chief Executive Officer. He adds, "This gift will benefit not only KFHC enrollees, but all people living in or visiting the Kern River Valley." Kern Valley Healthcare District is committed to expanding and enhancing the quality of healthcare services available to our community. For any questions about our service, you can contact our Public Relations Manager, Anna Leon at 760379-5257 Ext. 24, 661-978-8712 or annaleon@kvhd.org.

River,

Continued from page 1 resources that began dropping water and retardant along the head of the fire until ground crews arrived. As of 5 p.m., the fire was approximately 100 acres with a slow rate of spread. A witness driving through the area spotted four males in their mid 20's leaving the area at the time the fire started. The witness called the CHP with a license plate description, and

severely wounded service members and scholarships. Post 396 in Garden City, Mich., in 1993, two longtime riders proposed an environment where Legion family members could come together to share a common love for motorcycles. Post 396 members gained membership support and recognition, passed a resolution for a new program to be known as the "American Legion Riders." Currently, 106,000 American Legion Riders meet in over a thousand chapters in every domestic department and in at least three foreign countries.

Highway Patrol Officers were able to stop the vehicle at the corner of Hwy 178 and Masterson Dr. Kern County Fire Department Investigators were called to the area to question the individuals about the incident, and one male admitted to discharging a flare gun that ignited the fire. That individual was arrested for igniting a fire on forest lands while the other three were detained for questioning. If you spot suspicious fire activity, please call (877) FIRETIP.
