The long-awaited Bob Powers Gateway Preserve, which will be at the junctions of Highways 178 and 155, needs your input. There will be a public planning session for this upcoming project at the Veterans/Senior Center in Lake Isabella on Wednesday, Sept. 22 from 6 to 7:45 p.m. The Gateway project is being planned by the Kern River Valley Heritage Foundation, in collaboration with the Kern County Department of Parks and Recreation. They are jointly developing a Strategic Plan that will provide a “road map” for

the protection, development, management and operation of the Gateway Preserve. Since the property was acquired in 2001, there has been little in the way of public access while biological inventories, maintenance, fencing and adding native plants have been performed. “The Strategic Plan will provide a framework that assures the integrity of the wetlands as the Preserve transitions to its role as a resource available to the public,” said Tom Anderson of the Foundation. If you have questions of Anderson, please call (310) 391-3719 or send email him at andersontj2004@yahoo.com.

KRV Chamber looking for parade theme It’s not too early to start thinking about the Lake Isabella Christmas Parade – it’s only a little more than two months away. The parade will take place Nov. 27 along Lake Isabella Blvd. Jennie Cox, the new office coordinator at the KRV Chamber, taking over for Sue Weis (who is leaving the valley), says a well-thought-out theme for this year’s parade is sorely needed. If you have an idea for a theme, please contact the Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce office at (760) 379-5236 or email office@kernrivervalley.com. Office hours are Tuesday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you’re out of the area, call toll free at 866578-4386.

A smoke cloud appears in the sky over Bodfish Canyon Sunday afternoon as the nearby Canyon Fire starts to burn. By Wednesday, it had blackened over 6,000 acres and had destroyed one structure in the Clear Creek area.

Fire story a personal one Mike Devich Kern River Courier

When you have a weekly newspaper, you dread having to cover a big fire on deadline day. When your own home is threatened by that fire, it is a double whammy. Kern River Courier co-publisher Michael Batelaan had to face that situation on Wednesday, our deadline day. The Canyon Fire had steadily progressed towards his home in Bodfish Canyon ever since it started Sunday. The fire started about halfway up the four-lane section of Highway 178 through the Kern River Canyon. The fire blazed on both sides of the highway in one short section, closing down the canyon for a time. The fire burned steadily until Tuesday, when it suddenly exploded. A towering smoke cloud very quickly started to soar above the mountains just south of Lake Isabella and Bodfish.

The fire was soon threatening Havilah and the south end of Bodfish, and road closures were put into place Tuesday evening. The Batelaans were told they should pack up immediately pending an evacuation. They were not evacuated Tuesday night, but they were packed and ready to go at a moment’s notice. On Wednesday morning the Batelaans found their large lot had become a staging area for dozens of fire vehicles. By press time Wednesday, they weren’t sure if they could go home that night or not. They weren’t the only ones, of course. About 30 people had stayed at the Red Cross emergency shelter at the Senior Center in Lake Isabella Tuesday night, the Bakersfield Californian reported Wednesday. At press time, things were still very much up in the air, as many more Kern Valley residents were

One firefighter, Capt. Greg Lawler of Dallas, Texas, learned the hard way that sometimes children get trapped in homes during fires because they can’t work the window latches. Lawler also knows that the elderly often experience difficulty opening windows. With only three minutes to escape a flaming house fire, everyone must be prepared to escape quickly. "Know your options before fire strikes," Lawler says. Several years ago, during a home fire drill, Lawler learned that his 6-year old daughter, Olivia, could not open her bedroom window - one of two ways out. "The bottom line is that everyone should

be able to open all the windows. You never know where you will be in the home when a fire strikes, but chances are a window is nearby," Lawler adds. Lawler knows of what he speaks. He recalls an early morning fire where a child was unable to get out and his father, in desperation, broke the window with his fist and was able to rescue his son. As a result, the child suffered burns and lacerations from being pulled through the broken window, but recovered. "Breaking a window is dangerous, difficult and not the best option," Lawler says. Homeowners should always be aware that getting out quickly is imperative and make sure that windows are accessible in every room. Also, make sure that everyone can open them in an emergency. If not, look at products that will help them.

Things I Have Noticed...

Um... who’s driving the boat? Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist

This is a story about a friend, a great-granddaughter, a pontoon boat, fish, and nap time. It was in May a few years ago that I went fishing with my close friend, Fred Nelson. (Fred passed away a short time after this incident. We Middleworth truly miss him and his smiling face.) It was a beautiful spring day when I got a call from Fred, who said he was going fishing in his pontoon boat and would I like to go along. I explained that my 5year-old great-granddaughter Makenzy was staying with us and could she go too? Fred said of course. So off we went, pontoon fishing on the lake on a beautiful day. No wind, not too hot and the fishing was good. It was so good that Makenzy caught the biggest fish, a 4-pound catfish, which she needed help to lift up for the obligatory picture (which we still have, of course). She was so excited! She got even more so when Fred told her that he bet that no other girl on the lake that day had caught a fish that big. At this point we were at the east end of the lake and Fred fig-

ured that it was time to head home. It was getting late, we'd been out several hours and everyone was tired. So we headed back. Fred asked 5-year-old Makenzy if she would like to steer the boat back to the dock. She was so excited and jumped up and down, saying, “Yes, yes!” So Fred put her on his lap, showed her how to steer and said for her to aim for the Main Dam, which we could see in the distance. The afternoon was warm and the motor made a lazy hypnotic sound as we headed home. I was sitting in the bow seat, and after a while, I noticed that we were no longer heading toward the dam; instead we were heading for Engineers Point. I looked back at Fred and Makenzy and they were both asleep. Fred was snoring, and Makenzy was out like a light. I woke Fred and asked who was piloting the boat. He said apparently nobody. Unfortunately there was no film left in the camera, but captured in my mind will always be the picture of a little girl asleep at the wheel while her mentor was snoring away. “Apparently” angels were piloting the boat.

Public Input Sought for Bob Powers Gateway Preserve Strategic Plan (Lake Isabella, CA September 13, 2010) - Kern River Valley Heritage Foundation, in collaboration with the Kern County Department of Parks and Recreation, is developing a Strategic Plan that will provide a road map for the protection, development, management and operation of the Bob Powers Gateway Preserve.Since its acquisition in 2001, development of the Preserve has been relatively straight forward, consisting of Biological inventories, maintenance, fencing and adding native plants, with no general public access. The Strategic Plan will provide a framework that assures the integrity of the wetlands as the Preserve transitions to its role as a resource available to the public. The Strategic Plan will integrate the vision, planning, development, management and operation of the Preserve. It will take into consideration the history of the Preserve, its present condition and contemplated improvements, such as the creation of a nature trail, wildlife garden and visitor/interpretive center, as well as functions such as outreach and educational activities. The Plan will include Vision and Mission statements and conceptual plans for a nature trail, wildlife garden and a visitor/interpretive center, as well as a stewardship strategy for the Preserve's long-term protection. Please help us determine the future of the Bob Powers Gateway Preserve by joining us, from 6 to 7:45 pm, for a workshop on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at the Vets Hall, 6405 Lake Isabella Blvd. Lake Isabella. Valley history: The Onyx Store The proprietor of the first store built at Onyx was William Scodie. Born in Prussia in 1827, he learned the art of cooking in Bremen, Germany, as a boy and went to sea as a cook on a merchant ship. In 1856 he traveled to Keyesville. When he opened a hotel in that mining camp, all his supplies had to be hauled in by pack mules or ox trains. He operated his hotel quite successfully for five years. Then in 1861, he moved to the South Fork and settled at what is now Onyx. In those days the wagon track did not continue westward as Highway 178 does today. It turned south just about 100 yards west of the present store. After making a jog about 100 yards south and then 300 yards west again, it turned sharply south until it reached the mountain. Then it continued on down the valley. It was on this old road, behind the present store, that Scodie built the original store. It, like most of his buildings, was made of native adobe brick. He lived in the back of this store, and in his front room he began stocking the supplies needed for the cattlemen and miners of the area. This big room had a fireplace which was so large that a horse was required to pull the logs for the fire up from the river bottom. The logs would then be pushed through the front door and rolled across the dirt floor to the hearth. A homemade table stood in front of his huge fireplace, and Scodie's excellent cooking and cheery welcome soon gained his place a reputation that was hard to equal. Scodie soon became good friends with the Indians, who had a rancheria close by, and finally married one of the young Indian women named White Blanket. In 1880 Scodie needed additional room for his expanding business, so he had a Captain Andress, who had a ranch several miles up the road, build him the frame building that we still see today. It was not until 1913, however, that the road was straightened and the store moved to its last location. (Editor’s note: Bob Powers once told me that the sign on the store is in error and that it was started in 1861, not 1851. The current store building was built in 1880, so this year it is 130 years old.) —–From “South Fork Country” by Bob Powers

Before I begin this week’s column, I would like to thank three very special people for their quick response to my Sept. 3 column – Steve Anderson, Resource Officer, Kern River District, Sequoia National Forest; Christy McGuire, Associate Biologist, Mike Mencarini California DFG; and Phillip C. Strand, Fisheries Program Manager, Sierra National Forest. In the next few weeks I will give you their answers as I received them. These inquiries were not meant to trick or deceive anyone. Here is the first question I asked: Where have the shad gone? Phil and Steve wrote: “Seems like in the past years when Isabella Lake was warmer and more shallow, algae was a problem; but since shad feed on algae, it probably contributed to a boom cycle in the shad popula-

A

tion. Usually by this time of year the algae is a problem. This year’s algae bloom was not as bad as in previous years. The bottom line is less algae, less shad. “Also, adding to the bust cycle is cooler than normal water temp at spawn time. It seems that 60 degrees F is important to the shad’s spawning cycle. Seems like the lake draw down this year was later than usual and fast when it happened. If the lake temp was around 60 degrees F when the water started going down, it could have left the shad eggs high and dry.” Christy writes, “I would agree with Phil that the shad are likely at a low end of a cyclical population curve due to this year’s change in water temp.” Thanks again, Steve, Christy and Phil. Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heights resident and a volunteer at the Kern River Fish Hatchery. For questions or comments you can reach him through the Kern River Courier, office@kernrivercourier.com.

‘Iron Man 2’ half a good film

‘Mission’ returns again

Released the week of Sept. 28: "Iron Man 2" (PG-13) -- Robert Downey Jr. returns as Tony Stark, the billionaire weapons inventor who moonlights as the superhero Iron Man. In this sequel, Stark faces two major challenges: He must find an antidote to the poisoning his body is receiving from the power supply in his chest, whilst thwarting the evil machinations of Russian genius Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), who blames the Stark family for his father's death. The film has an awesome opening 30 From “Iron Man 2” minutes and the final battle between Iron Man and Vanko (and his army of Iron Man-inspired military robots) is a ton o' fun. The problem is the middle of the film. Not only does it drag, the reason is because director Jon Favreau was forced by the studio to shoehorn a bunch of scenes into the movie that'll set up the 2012 "Avengers" flick. "Iron Man 2" could've been a solid summer action film if Favreau had been left alone. Sadly, it's only a great half-movie. "Ellery Queen Mysteries" (Unrated) -- "Ellery Queen" is one of those classic TV series that I never thought would be released on home video -- so imagine my surprise and delight. This 1975 series, created by Richard Levinson and William Link ("Columbo," "Murder She Wrote"), stars the brilliant Jim Hutton as Ellery and David Wayne as his father, police inspector Richard Queen, as they solve crimes in 1947 New York. The show followed the same formula as the classic short stories, with every episode having Queen turn to the camera right before the final commercial break to ask the TV audience if they knew whodunit. Despite its brilliant writing and the endearing onscreen

chemistry between Hutton and Wayne, the show didn't catch on with the public and was canceled after only one season. It's a shame, really, since "Ellery Queen" was just as much fun to watch as "Columbo." WORTH A RENTAL "Get Him to the Greek" (Unrated) -- British comedian Russell Brand reprises his character Aldous Snow, the debauched rock star from "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." Jonah Hill co-stars as the record company flack charged with transporting the besotted Brit from London to Los Angeles, where he is to perform a comeback show. Some of the scenes are hilarious, but when the film tries to inject some seriousness, it just falls apart. It's an uneven film, but I would definitely recommend it as a rental -- if only to see the gut-busting funny performance of P-Diddy as Snow's record company exec. TV SERIES "Family Guy: Partial Terms of Endearment" "Scrubs" The Complete Ninth And Final Season "Rich Man, Poor Man" The Complete Collection "Survivor 3: Africa" The Complete Season "Survivor 4: Marquesas" The Complete Season "C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation" The Tenth Season "Superman/Batman: Apocalypse" "Top Gear" Complete Season 13 "Legend of the Seeker" The Complete Second Season "Paranormal State" The Complete Season Four "Midsomer Murders" Set 16 "The Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries" Set 2 "Eden of the East" The Complete Series c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Salome’s Stars ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although practical situations continue to dominate this week, there's time for the Lamb to indulge in the fun things in life -- like maybe taking a special someone out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This week favors relationships. Take time to renew old ones, and make time to go where new friends can be found. Expect news about a business deal. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should be seeing some progress on that new workplace situation. Meanwhile, family matters might demand more attention. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A relationship suddenly might present some challenges you never expected. After talking things out, assess what you've learned. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A disappointing response to a request might dampen the Lion's spirits. What you learn can be of great importance in a future undertaking. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A oncevolatile situation should be settled by now, giving you a chance to refocus on a project you've been planning for. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A business

matter that unexpectedly turns into a personal situation could create complications. Best to resolve the matter now before too much harm can be done. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Emotions can run high when they involve personal matters that no one really wants to talk about. Create the means to a workable outcome. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A positive response to a workplace request could lead the way to other long-sought changes. A personal situation also takes a welcome turn. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Patience pays off, as that once-overwhelming work situation continues to become easier to handle on a one-by-one basis. Look for positive news from a colleague. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It might be a good idea to take more time to reassess your next move in working out a complex situation. You could benefit from a new perspective on the matter. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might want to consider making time to discuss a change of plans with everyone concerned. Be prepared to explain your actions. Also be prepared to listen to alternatives. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a strong sense of what is right, and you try to work from that foundation. Friends see you as reliable. 1 block of Spam 1/2 Yellow mustard 1/2 Maple syrup Handful of whole Cloves Cooking Instructions

Make sure you line your baking dish with foil since this comes out pretty sticky. First mix the mustard and maple syrup. Then, crosshatch cut (make diagonal slashes across top of Spam as to make little diamonds) the top of the spam. Insert a clove in each diamond. Then pour mustard/syrup mixture all over the top of the Spam. Bake at 400* for about 30 minutes. The best way to truly tell if it's done is to check on it. If it's brown and crispy looking... it's done!

2 cans (10-3/4 oz. Ea.) condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted 1-1/3 cups milk 1/2 cup onion, chopped 1 TB prepared mustard 2 cans (16 oz. Ea.) sauerkraut, rinsed and drained 1 pkg. (8 oz.) uncooked medium noodles 1-1/2 lb. Polish sausage, cut into 1/2" pieces 2 cups (8 oz.) Swiss cheese, shredded 3/4 cup whole wheat bread crumbs 2 TB butter, melted

Preheat oven to 350° F. Grease 9" x 13" baking dish. Combine soup, milk, onion and mustard in medium bowl; blend well. Spread sauerkraut in prepared dish. Top with uncooked noodles. Spoon soup mixture evenly over noodles; cover with sausage. Top with cheese. Combine bread crumbs and butter in small bowl; sprinkle over casserole. Cover dish tightly with foil. Bake about 1 hour or until noodles are tender. Visit Bodfish Bob on the Web at www.bodfishbob.com. You can write to him at bodfishbob@hotmail.com

Recent study finds that there are more Catholic Churches in Las Vegas than Casinos. It was not surprising to find that some worhipers, attending Sunday Services, will place Casino gambling chips instead of cash in the donation baskets. Since the churches receive chips from many different casinos, the churches have devised a unique method to collect and sort the offerings.

The churches have banded together and now send all collected casino chips to a nearby Franciscan Monastery for sorting, then the chips are taken to the appropriate casino of origin and cashed in. This dedicated accounting group of Monastery members are known as the Chip Monks. Ron Bolyard Kern River Courier Columnist

The measurement of the Dip of an inclined flat surface, with a Brunton Compass, is demonstrated in the picture. As in strike measurement, the extended edges of the compass are laid against the flat surface Ron Bolyard and the inclinometer (from the base of the compass) is adjusted until the spirit level is horizontal. Then from the scale, etched below the glass, a Dip angle of 50 degrees East is recorded. The east direction is determined by knowing the Strike of the bed with reference to magnetic North. Remember the Dip is perpendicular to the Strike! The Brunton Compass is the basic tool of the true field geologist of yester year. Today, I am told that the geology cours-

es in college don’t teach the usage of the Brunton Compass. I suppose that computer graphics, satellite images and GPS locations are used to map the information gathered from the field notes of those old timers "walking the outcrops" with a Brunton Compass, a map, and a geological hammer! Ron Bolyard is a retired geologist and has developed an “acute interest” in the geology of the southern Sierra Nevada since he moved here in 1999.

Health Insurance Matters

Medicare changing for 2011 Harry P. Thal Kern River Courier Columnist

This is the time of year when I tend to put on my blinders and focus on Medicare products. Not only is this my area of expertise on a national level, but as the time frame is so limited, I must service thousands of clients in only a few short weeks. I just returned from Fresno, where I met with the manageHarry Thal ment staff of United Health. They market the Secure Horizons and AARP products. It was no surprise to learn that they are discontinuing sales of their Private Fee for Service plan (PFFS). The affected people have received a notice. Many other insurance companies are also eliminating this type of coverage from their portfolio for 2011. To make things simpler, the government has taken on the attitude that choices should be limited – so people don't have so many options to choose from. The PFFS plans were initially designed to help people in rural areas, where HMO plans were not normally available, get lowcost medical insurance. It turned out that these plans were very popular, and also profitable for the insurance companies. Heaven forbid they make a profit! So, the government

has removed all incentives and legislated only rural areas without an HMO can have this type of plan. Most insurance companies have decided the heck with it, and they will be no longer. I am hoping that there may be a few smaller companies offering this type of coverage in Kern County, so anybody who does receive a cancellation notice in the mail can call me and I will advise free of charge which plans, if any, you can contact. Another area of grave concern to me is that once you have made a decision as to your Medicare Advantage plan, you will have to live with it. In prior years, there was a period from January 1 to March 31 where you could make a change. No longer. Now, there is a small opportunity to get out of the Medicare Advantage (typically an HMO or a "Freedom Blue PPO") between January 1 and February 15. You can drop out and go back to Original Medicare, but can't select another plan. Prior to December 31, you can switch plans as often as you like (beginning November 15) but the last one selected will be "locked in" for all of 2011. Harry P. Talking About Real Estate

Look at big picture Matt Freeman Kern River Courier Columnist

Well, looks like the hot, dog days of summer are behind us. Real estate in the Kern River Valley usually kinda takes a break during the hottest part of summer and then starts up again a bit more briskly in the fall before the winter when everything winds down for a while. So, hopefully we will have some increased Matt Freeman activity. Nationally the real estate market has kind of slowed a bit. We had some better numbers in the summer but they have gone down. Short term, things are not looking up but I think longer term looks great. With this hard market we have right now, I wanted to give us all a reminder. This has happened before, and will happen again probably at some point. Let’s take a quick gander at a couple of past real estate markets that have hit this nation. First one, a bad one. Late ‘70s to about 1984-ish. Talk about bad! Prices went way down from an early ‘70s boom, and the big story was interest rates. Ouch, got to 20% at one point. Imagine that, 20% on a mortgage! That is crazy, actually, that is just plain nuts! I would love renting if we had that stuff going on now, forget buying anything. Several economic issues as well as political ineptness contributed to that housing crisis and

it took a long time to work itself out. Another notable period of real estate instability occurred relatively recently, after the 1st Gulf War in 1991. Through about 1/2 of that decade real estate values were basically flat-lined except for certain regional areas of the country. Values here in the valley were almost completely unchanged throughout the ‘90s. The economy went into a recession after the war, which usually happens after large wars, happened after WWII and after Vietnam. The only exception was Korea. The economy was basically the reason the first President Bush did not get re-elected and why Ross Perot got so many votes. Where is that guy now?! So, we have to remember these things when we look at real estate trends. I have found that we as Americans tend to have short memories – at least my generation does. "What have you done for me lately?" is our motto. We can't have that kind of attitude; we have to be able to see the big picture.Yes, prices are down, and sales volume is down, but we do not have inflation. We do not have 20% interest, we do not have a housing shortage. We have a housing surplus and the lowest interest rates ever, right now. So, take a deep breath as I have to do everyday when I come in this office and sit down and see the trends, and see the bigger picture. FIRE continued from page 1 being affected by this latest fire disaster. Locals were being reminded uncomfortably of the recent Bull Fire in Riverkern, which destroyed eight homes in a firestorm. Meanwhile, over the hill in Havilah, one structure had already been lost in the Clear Creek area. One mountain looked like a volcano Tuesday night. On the Courier’s Facebook page, Melissa Hoesman Johnson wrote, “Oh mercy – hope this is over soon!” Updates will be posted there until next week’s issue is printed. Meanwhile, the many residents of that area were on pin and needles, waiting to find out what was going to happen to their homes.
