McKeon stars in Hallmark movie Q: I saw Nancy McKeon a while back on Disney Channel’s “Sonny With a Chance” playing Demi Lovato’s mom, and I wondered what else she has been doing lately. — Sally T., via e-mail A: Nancy currently costars in the Hallmark Channel original movie “Love Begins,” which airs Sunday, Sept. 18. Nancy plays Millie, a local restaurant owner and the heart and soul of the town of Anderson’s Corner. Nancy Nancy told me a main reason she McKeon took the role: her daughters. “There are projects I’ve done that are just too grown-up for them to see. This was a chance for them to make fun of me in funny costumes and funny shoes and funny hair. They had a great time. Plus, I love the stories Hallmark tells, and this group of people were pretty terrific to work with.” Q: I love classic Westerns, especially “The Rifleman.” Can you tell me if series stars Chuck Connors and Johnny Crawford are still living, and if so, what they are doing? — Rhonda H., via e-mail A: Chuck Connors passed away in 1992 at the age of 71 of pneumonia
stemming from lung cancer. His 40year career spanned sports (basketball and baseball), film and TV; however, he was best known as Lucas McCain of “The Rifleman.” Johnny Crawford, 65, slowly stepped away from acting and headed toward music. He leads the Johnny Crawford Orchestra. See what he’s been up to, and if he’s coming to your area, at crawf Q: As a history buff, I was excited to read in your column that the History Channel is making a miniseries about the Hatfields and McCoys, starring Kevin Costner as Anse Hatfield. Who will play Randall McCoy? — Darnell R., via e-mail A: I, too, am eager for this miniseries, which is slated to air next year. I’m happy to report that Bill Paxton — of “Big Love,” “Apollo 13” and “Twister” fame — is set to play Randall McCoy, the famed arch nemesis of “Devil” Anse Hatfield. Sprinkle with some of the corned beef, then keep repeating layers of spinach and corned beef until you run out of spinach. Don't worry about how full the dish is because the spinach will shrink as it cooks. Pour both cans of coconut milk over the dish, pressing the leaves down with a spoon. Free Fishing September 3rd California Fish & Game Special to Courier The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) invites Californians to kick off their Labor Day weekend celebration by fishing in our state's spectacular waters. Saturday, Sept. 3 is the second of California's two 2011 Free Fishing Days, when people can try their hand at fishing
without having to buy a sport fishing license. All fishing regulations, such as bag and size limits, gear restrictions, report card requirements, fishing hours and stream closures remain in effect. Anglers should check the rules and regulations at www.dfg.ca.gov/ regulations/ for the waters they plan to fish.
Department of Fish and Game hunting for Game Wardens California Fish & Game Special to Courier Applications are now being accepted for the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) Warden Academy at Butte College in Oroville. The academy will begin in January 2013 and is scheduled to graduate in September 2013. The application deadline is Nov. 4, 2011. A typical day for a California game warden is as diverse as the state's fish and wildlife. Wardens have the opportunity to patrol ocean, desert, mountain and valley environments, as well as urban areas. Wardens employ everything from all-terrain vehicles to jet skis to snowmobiles while on patrol, and spend much of a typical day making contact with Californians in the great outdoors. DFG has a dive team and uses K-9 partners as well. Environmental crimes and
pollution incidents also fall under the purview of game wardens. DFG's academy at Butte College is Peace Officer Standards and Training certified. Cadets are trained to be police officers with specific emphasis on working as wardens. In California, with 159,000 square miles that offer habitat and wildlife diversity unequaled by any other state, the average warden has a patrol district of more than 600 square miles. The state has more than 1,100 miles of coastline, 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, 4,800 lakes and reservoirs, three desert habitat areas and scores of high mountain peaks. Applications are now being accepted online and must be postmarked by the due date for each category described. To learn more about game wardens, please view DFG's new recruitment videos at www.dfg.ca. gov/enforcement/career.

The Lantern Light Tours will be conducted by J. Paul Corlew curator/director of Silver City and will be held on Friday and Saturday nights. The tours will highlight the long and some say haunted history of the site. These tours will also feature Lake Isabella Paranormal Society founding member Kat Owen and family who will be giving ghost hunting tips and techniques each night. During the tours they will also conduct live paranormal investigations. Over the last 40 years the Ghost Town has reportedly been the location of dozens of alleged sightings of ghostly apparitions by visitors and staff alike. The Lantern light tour tickets go on sale at 8:30 p.m. each of the two nights and the tours will begin at 9:00 p.m. guided by Corlew. The cost is $12.00
per person (all ages). Members of The Tombstone Law Dawgs Old West re-enactment gunfighter group will be on hand for the lantern tours and are also scheduled to perform their exciting Wild West Shows on Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. each day. General admission for the Labor Day Weekend Wild West Show and self-guided tour of Silver City is just $5.50 per adult, $4.50 per child (12 and under) and children 5 and under are FREE when accompanied by a paid adult admission. All proceeds from admissions & special events are utilized for the continuing renovation, restoration and museum acquisitions on site. The Ghost Town is open 10 am to 4 pm daily through September 15th then weekends only through May 14th. Silver City is located at 3829 Lake Isabella Blvd. in Bodfish. Phone 760-379-5146.

Things I Have Noticed...
The elusive ‘Bond Aide’ Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist
(The real name of the company in this story has been changed to protect the innocent)(me) I'm no longer a youngster, instead I fit somewhere on the geezer side of life. Over the years I have bumped, banged, Middleworth cut, or scraped my body. Damage to my being was usually accompanied by some kind of bleeding. I never had trauma so bad that I needed a tourniquet, just something that would stop the red stuff from leaking. That usually called for some type of dressing which was usually a Bond Aide. And herein lies today's true story. The reason I'm writing about this bandage is to relate the experience I had the other night when I cut myself , causing, as my 5 year old great granddaughter would say, an 'owee'....I noticed it was oozing pretty good so I started looking for a dressing. I looked where one should be and in places it shouldn't. Finally I called for assistance from my live in guru (wife) who immediately found some Bond Aides at the back of the medicine chest. They weren't there before (I'm pretty sure). "Do you want help" she asked and I
said "No, I am perfectly capable of putting a small dressing over this tiny wound," "Ok" she said and left me there with my life threatening gash. I picked out a bandage, sized for the wound and tried to peel the covering off...and I tried and I tried. It just wouldn't open. Next I grabbed some scissors and tried cutting around the edge, but the bandage was still stuck inside the covering. After using tweezers and brute force, I finally got the damned thing apart. By this time my life's blood was all over the sink and dripping from my hand, making it hard to get the bandage to stick. I finally did and swore revenge. Tomorrow I am going to send a registered letter to the President of Bond Aide. I will enclose a bandage like the one I used. I shall challenge him to take this to his next board meeting and try to remove the covering. I will say that I hoped he really didn't need it quickly, because he might bleed to death!. I don't expect an answer but I will feel better as I see him in my minds eye, trying peel the Bond Aide apart while his board giggles. Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program.

California Joe’s Storytelling Corner
Game over California Joe Kern River Courier Columnist
Early in the afternoon of August 1, 1876, James Butler Hickok, 39, sat down to a last game of poker in Deadwood at Carl Mann's No. 10 saloon with his back to the wall, just the way he liked it. Jack McCall, "Prince of the Pistoleers," joined the game. Hickok may have cursed McCall for being $3.50 short when it was time to settle up. Another legend says Hickok took pity on McCall and gave him breakCalifornia Joe fast money the next morning. What ever happened, Hickok went on about his business while McCall seethed. The next afternoon, Hickok returned to the No. 10. A game was in progress between Carl Mann, Charles Rich and ex-riverboat captain named Massie. They invited Hickok to participate. He said he would if Rich, who had the stool against the wall, would change seats.. Rich joked that Hickok "wouldn't be attacked." Bill took the seat with his back to the door. Around 4:15p.m., Hickok, was losing heavily to Massie. However, he held two black aces, two black eights, and a jack of diamonds. McCall had entered the saloon and inched his way
along the bar until he was two or three feet behind Hickok. He slipped his old Colt 45 from the holster and pointed it at Hickok's head. "Damn you, take that!" shouted McCall and pulled the trigger.. The bullet drove through the back of Hickok's skull, exiting just under his right cheekbone, landing in Capt.. Massie's forearm, just above his left wrist. At first, the captain thought that Hickok had shot him but Massie soon realized what had happened.. He refused to have the slug removed, and left it in until his death in 1910. Hickok was instantly dead as he slumped to the floor. What would come to be called the "Dead Man's Hand" slipped from his fingers. McCall fled out the back door. Cries of "Wild Bill is dead!" filled the streets. Soon, the assassin was found hiding in a butcher shop. Deadwoodites organized a trial to begin at 9 a.m. (Proceedings adjourned at 3 p.m. for Hickok's funeral.) In this first trial, McCall was found not guilty. The second trial began in Yankton, Dakota Territory, on December 4, 1876. Two days later, Jack McCall was convicted. He was hanged on March 1, 1877.
