Match play results in Isabella fire Kern County Fire Courier Release Just after 3 p.m.

Sunday afternoon, Kern County Fire, US Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management received reports of a structure fire near the intersection of Kem St. and Lucern Way in Lake Isabella.

When fire crews arrived, it was found that the field and vegetation behind the structures were on fire, not the houses as originally

reported.

Firefighters quickly set up structure protection along the rear of the residences along Lucern Way, while air resources and hand crews began working their way around the fire.

The forward progress of the fire was stopped after two hours, and full containment was expected by noon, Monday September 23.

The cause of the fire was found to be juveniles playing with matches in the vegetation.

Dam recreational impacts discussed The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District and the U.S. Forest Service Sequoia National Forest hosted two public information meetings to gather input from the public, the residents of the Kern River Valley in particular, on the impacts to recreation resources on the Isabella Lake Dam Safety Modification project.

The comments are being incorporated into the project's recreation plan, which will describe the impacts to recreation resources and propose potential solutions. The draft recreation plan is scheduled to be released in December for public review and comment.

The Corps hired Gulf South Research Corporation, of Baton Rouge, LA who spent the summer conducting surveys among the visitors to the Kern Valley. They observed and asked questions a total of 30 days between

Cemetery District fund raiser update The Kern River Valley Public Cemetery District continues to raise money for the alternative energy (solar) project. To date, the District has collected donations of $9,700 and adding to that the $12,000 the District Board of Trustees directed to the first stage of the project,.

The next and final stage of the District's alternative energy project is to install solar panels at the well site for irrigation water delivery. The goal for this stage is to raise the $38,000. The energy produced by the panels installed on the office roof and at the well site will significantly reduce the electricity bills allowing the District to redirect approximately $7,000 annually into cemetery operations.

The Cemetery District would like to remind the community that making a donation towards the project, no matter how small or large, will be used strictly for the solar project. If you would like to make a donation, you can call the cemetery office at 760-376-2189, or mail a donation to PO Box 215, Wofford Heights, CA 93285. You are also welcome to drop by the cemetery office (business hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday). Seven Godly virtues, No. 7 Janet Kutzner, Courier Columnist Today concludes the series on the Seven Godly Virtues with the examination of the final Godly Virtue, the one the world mocks the most Kutzner Chastity.

Chastity is defined in the Catholic Dictionary as follows: "Chastity is the virtue which excludes or moderates the indulgence of the sexual appetite. It is a form of the virtue of temperance, which controls according to right reason the desire for and use of those things which afford the greatest pleasures."

Our culture is obsessed with immediate gratification, and sexual gratification is at the top of the list. A thirteen year old is taught in Jr. High more about sexual activity and contraception than abstinence. (Thankfully, in the home one can be taught about the virtue of chastity). Unfortunately, everywhere a child goes on the internet, in the mall, or at the movies, they are bombarded with sexually stimulating images and peer pressure.

While the pressure to be unchaste comes from without, the sin of sexual immorality comes from within. Jesus tells us: "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander." (Matthew 15:19). This means that we need to concentrate on the

teachings of Jesus, the apostles and the church. To counter this pressure we need to teach the biblical virtue of Chastity which, in very simple terms, means celibacy in single-hood and chastity in marriage.

Of course, chastity is more than simple celibacy, but yes, it means celibacy - no sexual activity outside of traditional marriage, which is defined as a lifelong relationship between one man and one woman (Genesis 2:24) joined together with the in marriage.

Chastity is also the reasonable decision to keep oneself pure - avoiding pornography or placing oneself in a compromising situation with another person. These are the things that not only harm the soul, but they harm the most important relationships with family and friends. In addition to the spiritual benefits, there are health and social benefits as well. Celibacy outside of marriage and chastity in marriage would prevent to sexually transmitted disease. Most profoundly unwanted pregnancy.

As Christians we have the answer to so many of the social ills that plague us - the Good News of Jesus Christ! Giving ourselves over to Jesus and allowing God the Holy Spirit to transform us means that we practice the virtue of Chastity and we teach it to our children and our children's children!

Turkey Vulture Festival, September 28 Fall is here and the birds are moving from their summer breeding grounds in North America to the wintering grounds in Central and South America. As birds fly south they need places like the Kern River Preserve to rest and replenish on their way. One of the largest concentrations of migrating turkey vultures in North America comes down the Sierra Nevada and through the Kern Valley. If we are lucky we may see "kettles" of hundreds of vultures swirling up into the morning sky.

■ 6 a.m.-Early Birding Walk at Migrant Corner Trail-Many bird species can be found during the fall migration moving through this spectacular overlook.

■ 7:30 a.m.-Bird Walk at Kern River Preserve headquarters-The nature trails at the Kern River Preserve are beautiful in the fall.

■ 8:30 a.m. - Nature Hike by Kern River Valley Environmental Magnet School local students will lead this walk to show kids and their adults about what they have learned here at the Preserve.

■ 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.-Information BoothStaff and volunteers will keep you informed about this event and the Kern River Preserve.

Bass and deer looking good Mike Mencarini Courier Columnist Here is some good news for all of you who fish for bass and those who fish for crappie and Mencarini catfish in our smaller version of Lake Isabella. The lake is healthy with a large population of shad and they are providing plenty of good eats for all. Pastor James, my bass bite indicator has been doing very well along with his in-laws this past week with good daily catches of large mouth bass. No monsters, but good quality fish.

I really believe we dodged a big bullet this year. What I mean is with the extreme low water conditions and the summertime heat that we just put behind us, we are very lucky that we did not experience a fish kill. It amazes

me how nature takes care of itself when the chips are down.

Antler Report A recent check with James Store in Kernville has revealed several bucks taken by bow. The largest being a good quality 3x3.

If while you are out hunting in the hills or the woods and you haven't seen a deer, you might want to check your neighbor's yard. More than likely that's where you will find those elusive bucks resting under a shade tree after a lunch of the latest deer mix and a cool drink of water or just grazing on a vacant lot (see pic). That seems to be what our neighbors are doing these days.

Folks, let me remind you that this is not a good idea on many levels; the most important one is you and your pet's safety. Mountain Lions eat deer and when there are no more deer it's you or your pet.

Much Ado About Nothing?

By Sam Struckhoff PICKS OF THE WEEK “Much Ado About Nothing” (PG-13) — Shot on a shoestring budget in less than two weeks, the best romantic comedy of the summer almost looks like a home video project. It sort of is: Joss Whedon (yes, the director of "The Avengers") directed this Shakespearean adaptation around his California home. The modern setting, costumes and black-andwhite filter give the story a filmnoir feel -- which goes perfectly with the pithy back-and-forth of Shakespeare's original text.

The plot follows an evil scheme to discredit a fair young lady and stir up chaos between families.

However, two attractive singles who outwardly hate each other -all while being oblivious to the sexual tension between them -hijack the plot. You don't have to pretend to like this just to make your English teacher happy; it's actually enjoyable.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Grease 9x13 inch glass baking dish. Cook bacon and onion in heavy large skillet over medium heat until bacon is crisp and onion translucent, stirring frequently, about 8 minutes.

Transfer to paper towels using slotted spoon. Drain well.

Combine eggs with next 3 ingredients. Mix in bacon mixture.

Pour into prepared baking dish, spreading mixture evenly. Bake until center is set, about 45 minutes. Cut into squares and serve.

Cut 6 boiled eggs in half; remove yolk. Place yolks in bowl and mix with 1 teaspoon pickles, 1 teaspoon mustard, 1 tablespoon mayonnaise, dash of salt; stiff eggs with the yolk mixture.

Set eggs aside. Mix potatoes with remaining ingredients. Add eggs (flaked with fork) last. Top with paprika and arrange deviled eggs around top of salad for decorative look.

Scoop out potatoes. Brush inside of skin with butter, bacon and onions.

Top with cheese. Bake 15 minutes at 450 degrees or until crispy.

At this point of time, it is impossible to provide the monthly premiums Thal for the plans that will be available under the Affordable Care Act, as they are not yet published. Even within a category, such as the Silver level, there will be three PPO type plans and an HMO here in Kern County. These same insurance companies may be offering different benefits in other areas of the state.

Within the Silver plan, for example, there will be levels of monthly premiums depending on the benefits selected, and if a plan is purchased through Covered California there may be tax credits available to lower your monthly costs. Covered California is available through Certified California Covered agents who have been screened, taken advanced training, and passed a comprehensive examination. All plans offered in Covered California will also be available in the private marketplace, but no subsidies.

As I have written in past articles, there is a lower level of "Catastrophic" coverage available to individuals and families under age 30.

For a 25 year old, single individual, the SAMPLE monthly premium will be between $117 a month and $185 per month, depending on the compa-

The Bone Density Scan Requirements for the Health Provider and Patient are:

Minnitti reminded the audience that most of the project work is not in the water. The construction phases are spread out to limit the negative effects of diesel engines on local air quality.

The Corps also plans to utilize as much electric power as possible, to keep Valley air quality manageable. The entire project is expected to be completed in 2022.
