Model railroad trains a way to relax for two hobbyists Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier
Model trains can be addicting – and rewarding. Peter Waco has done HO model trains since he was 14 – that’s 30 years now. Sebastian Dominick does "O" gauge 1940s-era Lionel trains and HO trains. They both have been working behind Cheyenne’s Stage Stop Restaurant in Riverkern for the last several weeks building the layout. "I like unique stuff," said Dominick. His rail cars are mostly hand made out of balsa wood, and his engines are one-off's (one of a kind). When Waco decided to rent the apartment behind the restaurant, he had one additional request – to have a place where he could build his model train layouts. The HO layouts are the work of both Waco and Dominick and will fill two levels of two rooms. The restaurant is open Thursday through Sunday. Dominick is a partner and works in the restaurant. The rest of the week he works on trains. Literally, trains, trains, trains. Dominick said, "I love showing them off." The "O" gauge layout is constructed mainly with popsicle sticks, cardboard and plaster cloth.
Diner saved from fire Cheryl’s Diner in Kernville filled with smoke during the early morning hours of Monday, Aug. 31, due to a smoldering rag. A Bakersfield Californian newspaper carrier saw the smoke at 3:30 a.m. and the fire station next door to the restaurant responded. There was very little damage and the diner opened that day.

A catalytic converter from a motor vehicle appears to be the cause of a series of fires that popped up Monday on Highway 155 between Lake Isabella and Wofford Heights. Although the official cause of the fires has not been released yet, local Forest Service district ranger Rick Larson was quoted as telling Bakersfield’s KBAK-TV that a catalytic converter may have been the cause, since Forest Service and Kern County firefighters found evidence on the side of the road that pointed in that direction. The fires started about 9:30 a.m. The exact number of fires varies because several burned together, but between six and 12 fires were started. The fires were controlled within 24 hours, and although structures were threatened, none were lost. If anyone has any information on these fires please call 1-877-347-3847.

Things I Have Noticed...
HOFFMANN
Keep gas filler doors consistent Rod Middleworth Kern River Courier Columnist
It wasn't until yesterday that I noticed something special had happened in my everyday life. It occurred when I pulled up to the gas Middleworth pump at my local station. I approached, as always, thinking to myself, “Which side of my car is the gas tank opening on?” That way I would know which side of the pump I would need to drive toward. I have three vehicles. Two of them have gas tank openings on the left and one has an opening on the right. So each gas station visit, depending on which vehicle I am driving, requires my attention to get it right or I could end up with a hose too short to reach the filler. I was always getting it wrong. I usually didn't find out my error until I had gotten out of the vehicle and discovered I was on the on the side opposite of where I needed to be. All of my vehicle gas tank doors are smooth with no projections or hinges, so even using my mirrors I still couldn't tell from inside my vehicles which side had the opening. I should add that at my age, my
memory is a little bit south of north. As an example – I only occasionally drive my big truck and I can never remember its filler location. Getting in and out of the truck isn't the easiest trick in the world. I love driving it, because I sit so high and can see so well. However, climbing into the cab is a mountaineering feat, so I don't like doing it two or three times at every gas station while I’m lining up at the right pump. But I digress. On this particular day, as I searched my brain trying to remember which vehicle I was in and where the filler door was, I suddenly realized that with the trade-in and my most recent purchase of a new car, all of my gas tank openings on all my vehicles were now on the left side! That means that no longer must I wrack my brain for a decision. Thusly, all I have to do is keep the gas pumps to my left and Eureka! I will always be where I should be. What a great day. Postscript. On the new car the electric release buttons for the trunk and the gas covers are next to each other on the door. Guess what? Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth, a retired security manager for Pacific Bell, is an instructor for the local AARP Driver Safety Program and coordinator for the Isabella Lake Patrol volunteers.

Cats are coming in Jack Bustamante Kern River Courier Columnist
On the hunt for a hot spot upriver last week I ran into quite a few pockets of nice pan size trout, 8 to 10 inchers. All these trout were in less accessible areas in faster waters. I released one 2 pounder in the layers of pools above Ant Canyon. “Buckets of Early morning and crappie are evening bites getting fisherare still promen excited.” ducing some --Jack nice fish Bustamante around Isabella Lake. Voices of Faith
Supplier and consumer have same fears Clarence Semonious, pastor Prince of Peace Lutheran Fellowship, Kernville
Jesus, talking before the advent of our modern economics, advised “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” Luke 12:15. I hesitate to continue because He then explained about the problems of a particular rich man. Center Semonious attention on both the wealthy and the poor; the love of either things or power is a direct line to anxiety. God looks at the desires of the heart. Isaiah wrote, “Say to those who have an anxious heart, "Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God.” (35:4). Regarding vengeance, God had said, “Vengeance is mine, and recompense, for the time when their foot shall slip; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and their doom comes swiftly.” Deuteronomy 32:35. Regarding recompense, understand repayment; reimbursement; or compensation for a loss. Call it fearful, fretful, or concerned, both supplier and consumer are addressed within God’s economics. The supplier has the same fears and concerns as the consumer. God blesses both. The consumer and the supplier share the same temptation – to seek possessions and power. God has promised vengeance and recompense to both. The epis-
tle of James teaches, “My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory.” James 2:1. Look up the phrase, “business is business,” in scripture. I looked in five translations with the same results; “not found.” What one will find is, “For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, ‘You sit here in a good place,’ while you say to the poor man, ‘You stand over there,’ or, ‘Sit down at my feet,’ have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?” James 2:2-4. These are not rules for ushering, but self-testing for one’s heart. “If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing well.” James 2:8. We are told, “…the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.” Galatians 5:17. After listing eleven things to avoid, a list of the fruits of the Spirit, “…love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23. Trust God’s promise in Matthew 6:9-13. “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Health Insurance Matters
Times have changed since John Adams Harry P. Thal Kern River Courier Columnist
The article I wrote three weeks ago has caused some readers to respond to me in the form of e-mails. (Being out of town, I haven't seen the mail from the post office as yet. ) The Harry Thal responses I have received from my article concerning HR 3200, the health care legislation currently before Congress, are very mixed. The more conservative and moderate readers favor my comments, while those who tend more to the political left feel my analysis is inaccurate. I guess we will have to agree to disagree. ***
Our cabin in the woods has no cell phone, telephone, Internet nor television. So, we brought our own TV/DVD player and have been watching the mini-series "John Adams." This dramatization of America's fight for independence and the early struggles of our country bring to light the basic foundation that America was built upon – freedom to choose, and a government by the people and for the people. I truly believe that our representatives in Washington, DC need to review what our founding fathers stood for. Our country has come a very long way since the 1700s. The movie dramatized this by showing how Thomas Jefferson lost his wife and child to diphtheria. Today, the cost of a physician has risen beyond a few pence or a chicken. Many Americans cannot afford

the cost of health care at the level available to the more affluent. In this 21st Century, our government has taken on a role as caretaker for America. While there is a need to provide health service and benefits to all, in my opinion, there is no need to create “one size fits all” plans. Granted, some people need more help than others, but I personally believe that our founding fathers did not intend for government to dictate to those who can help themselves. I commend and encourage legislation that expands benefits to all Americans. Some of my readers commented that this would be so under the proposed legislation. I suggest they read the bill, and not the analysis by special interest groups. *** I shall be back in the office in a
few days. I will begin preparation for the Medicare open enrollment that starts Nov. 15. It takes several months to get certified with all the health plans that will be available in 2010. To the reader who commented about my "self interest" in seeing the legislation defeated, all I can say is that the current Medicare Advantage commission schedule is no reason to keep me employed. If the legislation were to pass, all Americans would be required to have insurance, and I would be very busy accommodating them. Harry P. Thal, MA, is a licensed insurance broker. California Joe’s Country Living
Some going without health care California Joe Kern River Courier Columnist
According to the Wall Street Journal, doctors are turning away 62% of patients at OneWorld Health Centers in Omaha. They’re uninsured. Doctors are turning away 500 patients a month. They’re losing health coverage during this recession. The clinics in Omaha can’t afford enough dentists. Doctors are calling in favors to friends California Joe who are specialists to perform procedures such as treatments for women who show signs of developing cervical cancer. “I think we’re even seeing the tip of the iceberg in terms of who we turn away,” said one executive. “We really want some kind of reform.” Meanwhile, in Nebraska, Senator Nelson is encouraged that lawmakers could pass some of the less controversial aspects of the health overhaul, such as increasing funding for prevention initiatives and training more nurses and doctors. But he thinks the heart of the legislation, a government expansion to cover the uninsured, will be more difficult to pass than he has anticipated. He also concedes that Democrats failed to win the support of people who already have insurance by not

*** I’ve spent the last few days watching the next saga in the Kennedy saga as it unfolded on TV. Talk about families that have had their fair share of “sturm and drang.” I came to California in 1960 and have watched the fortunes of the Kennedys rise and fall ever since. I really felt badly when Jack Kennedy was assassinated and even more so when Robert Kennedy was later also assassinated. And now the untimely death of Ted Kennedy. Well, the three of them are finally united at Arlington Cemetery. Ted Kennedy did noble work in the last years of his life. Did his work pay off? Well, we’ll just have to wait and see if there’s a future payoff. This health care bill was going to be his big payoff for 47 years of dedication to the public good. But he did receive a grand sendoff for his next great adventure!

Painting classes forming
Pick your agent by the ‘net
Donna Fitch Kern River Courier Columnist
Have you ever thought you may wish to paint and then found all kinds of excuses to not? New territory can be scary. You may think you haven’t any talent, or don’t know where to begin. Several requests have encouraged me to offer an opportunity to the community Donna Fitch to take a beginning painting class while keeping down the cost. All painters will be welcome and there will be plenty of individual attention to go around. Beginners will learn, step by step, how to take a blank canvas and a few supplies and complete a work of art. Learn a simple grid to adjust the size of your chosen subject to a different size canvas. (You don’t even need any drawing experience!) Discover proper perspectives. Become familiar with various brush types and techniques to get desired effects. Find out about color relationships, how to mix colors both on a palette and on your painting; blending, too. Develop an underpainting and learn to build a painting from start to finish. And voila – you
become a painter. Find your pace and style. Evening class will be available Mondays at 5:30 at the beautiful, inspirational Indian Cultural Center for those of you who work, yet hunger to create. If response demands a daytime class, then we will choose a day and start a second class. Each class will be comprised of six weekly sessions. Acrylics, a wonderful beginning medium, are my choice for this class. It dries fast, allowing you to move right along, the color is vibrant, they can be less expensive than other mediums, no odors to contend with, but best of all is it is a forgiving medium. If you wish to work with “water-soluble” oils, that’s fine too. It does not need to be expensive to get started. Five colors, a few brushes, an easel, and a canvas get you started. My hope is to see you blossom, grow in confidence and have a lot of fun. $20 per session should make art lessons affordable and available to those who otherwise might not be able to take a class. Give me a call at (760) 378-1090. Donna Fitch is a local artist. For questions or comments you can reach her through the Courier, office@kernrivercourier.com.

Salome’s Stars ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It might not be wise to pursue goals involving others, unless you can stop impulsively rejecting new ideas. Either open your mind or wait until next week, when this "ornery" mood passes. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It's a good time for the Bovine to be creative and practical for yourself and your surroundings. Shop wisely, not impulsively, and keep your Bull's eye focused on quality, not quantity. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should feel more confident about moving ahead with plans that had to be delayed by an unexpected turn of events. Also, family matters might need more time than first anticipated. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be considerate of others as you move into a new area in your professional life. Take time to meet people and discuss mutual goals. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Creating a fuss could get your ideas noticed quickly. But it would be best to present your case, and then wait for a reaction to follow in due course, rather than try to force it to happen. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Unkept promises might cause plans to go awry this week. You can either grumble about people "letting you down" or find a way to make the best of it and move on. The choice is yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Putting off

making a commitment early in the week could be a good move. Best to act when you know you're making an informed decision. Expect more facts to emerge by the week's end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A recent act of kindness on your part could take on special meaning this week. Also, look for signs of upcoming changes in your personal and professional relationships. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Many of the tougher communication barriers between you and others in the workplace or at home could begin breaking down this week. Expect some surprises to emerge. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your "tough love" attitude toward someone you care for could be misunderstood. Try to be less judgmental and show more consideration. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An unexpected workplace challenge could be daunting. But take what you know (and you know more than you realize) and apply it to the problem, and you should see positive results. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Recent relationship changes for both single and paired Pisces continue to influence much of your week. Keep your focus on developing the positive aspects as you move along. BORN THIS WEEK: You set your goals with assurance and influence others to follow suit. You would be an excellent philosopher and teacher. (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.
