Easter traditions at Kernersville Moravian Church
Jamy Gearhart
Betty Körner Atkins’ family has been going to Kernersville Moravian Church (KMC) for many generations. In fact,
2015 marks the 150th Anniversary of KMC. It is a church with roots that run deep in the community and in tradition. Atkins and the other members of the church help keep traditions alive by making palm crosses, putting fresh flowers on the graves of the unattended, and participating in a sunrise Easter service in the cemetery. She explained the traditions of the Moravian church, some of which may be familiar to people of other faiths as well. One unique activity that Moravians participate in is the tradition of scrubbing the gravestones. Usually this event takes place on the Saturday before Palm Sunday, but this year KMC did not scrub the graves because they have started using a new product that protects the headstones. “Ash Wednesday begins the service of the Lenten season,” Atkins said. “We have communion
and it is the first season of Lent.” Holy Week starts on Palm Sunday and each member will be given a palm cross to wear during the service. These palm crosses are lovingly and painstakingly prepared by the Women’s Fellowship. Several tables full of women and girls sat together on Saturday, March 28 as they snipped and arranged the pieces of palm to be made into crosses. “We have 36 done so far,” said Ruth Williard. “We need 400.” Someone said, “You’ll be here all day,” which aroused a chorus of, “No we won’t!” And then the air was filled with much laughter. Atkins said there will be handbells that night. “It used to be called ‘Passion Week,’” informed Atkins, “but they don’t call it that anymore.” After Palm Sunday, the Moravians have a service every night until Easter Sunday. This week is called Holy Week and each service will incorporate readings, hymns, and scriptures, as well as special music. On Good Friday, there is a crucifixion service and a Lovefeast. Many churches of other faiths follow these same traditions or variations of them, but Atkins stated that the Lovefeast is unique to the Moravians. When asked what was her favorite part of the Moravian Easter tradition, Atkins was thoughtful. “I like the Good Friday service,” she ventured. “They hold that in the old sanctuary and that is the most special and meaningful service to me. They ring the bell 33 times, one time for each year of Jesus’s life.” Another event that is unique to KMC is the placement of fresh flowers on the graves of the unattended. “That started in 1945,” revealed Atkins. “My mother, Mary Ruth Körner, and Mattie Shore stared this tradition when they had 25 graves
of people who had no relatives to put flowers on them.” Atkins explained that they place fresh flowers on all of the graves on Saturday morning so they can all be adorned for the Easter Sunrise service. “I still carry on this tradition,” shared Atkins.
Then she added that that the band is an old German tradition.
The Moravian Church is a very musical church. On Saturday evening before Easter, the band travels to nursing homes, the homes of shut-ins, and of families who have lost loved ones during the year and plays music for them. This band also plays the music for the Sunrise Service on Easter Sunday.
“The Moravians brought this tradition from Germany to Old Salem,” she explained. “This church was established in 1867 for the people who had to travel to Friedland for services. It was taking them half a day to travel to church and they needed something closer.”
Reverend Lisa Muller, pastor at KMC, said the band consists of brass instruments and woodwinds. She explained that getting children involved in the music is a good way to bring them closer to the church and some of the band members began playing their instruments as early as six-years-old. “Some of them have been playing for 60 years,” she revealed. The Sunrise Service on Easter is a tradition that Moravians share with many churches, but what many people may not realize is that the Moravians were the first ones to hold such a service. “The Moravians are very comfortable in the graveyard,” Muller confided. During the Sunrise Service, the congregation begins in the sanctuary, but then the band leads them to the graveyard. Music is important to many religions and Moravians are no different. “We sing our theology,” Atkins stated.
After the Sunrise Service on Easter, everybody has breakfast together; the meal is prepared by the church youth. “Our youth come in at 4:00 in the morning to fix breakfast for everyone,” said Atkins. Food is an integral part of the Moravian tradition. The Moravian Lovefeast is based on the Agape feast, the meals of the early churches described in the Bible, which were partaken in unity and love. Traditionally, a Lovefeast consists of a sweetened bun and coffee that is served to the congregation in the pews by dieners (servers). The Lovefeast is a reminder to the congregation of the Moravian credo,
“In essentials, unity; In non-essentials, liberty; In all things, love.”

I know God sometimes says “No” when we ask for something in our prayers. But if He really loved us, wouldn’t He always answer our prayers with a “Yes”? -- Mrs. G.H. Let me assure you that God does love us, and precisely because He loves us, He sometimes says “No” to what we request in our prayers.
Let me explain it this way.
Elsewhere in your letter, you mention that you and your husband have two children. Do you give them everything they ask for? Or if they want to do something you know is dangerous, do you let them do it anyway? No, of course not. And the reason is because you love them and don’t want anything bad to happen to them. Part of your responsibility as a parent is to protect your children from harm even if it sometimes means saying “No”. In a much greater way, God loves us and knows what is best for us -far more than we do. And because He wants to keep us from harm, He sometimes says “No.” As I look back over my life, I know God sometimes said “No” to things I asked Him to do, and to be honest, I often was disappointed. But later I realized God knew what He was doing, and by saying “No” He had kept me from harm.
Prayer is one of our greatest privileges, and it’s possible because Jesus Christ has opened heaven’s door for us through His death and resurrection. But prayer isn’t just asking God to do anything we want. Begin by committing your life to Christ. Then make it your goal to seek His will in your prayers. The Bible says,

Church Calendar
Since the days of Christ’s crucifixion, the cross has been the symbol of Christianity. Christians have always looked to the Cross as a reminder of the price Christ paid for our salvation. The famous evangelist, Billy Graham, often reminded pastors to preach about the Cross. The true meaning of the Cross is that all people who believe in redemption through the Cross have eternal life. It is sad to see many churches today without a Cross. In an effort to offend no one and fit in with our political correct culture the Cross has been removed. Christ died on the Cross for the sins of the whole world. It is a fact that, around the world, more people recognize the golden arches of McDonald’s and the Shell Oil Company logo more than the meaning of the Cross. According to a survey of people in Australia, Germany, India, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, these commercial symbols are better known than the Cross representing Christianity. The most widely recognized symbol in these six countries was the five linked rings of the Olympics by 92% of respondents. In contrast, 88% identified the McDonald’s arches and Shell’s seashell logo. Only 54% identified the Cross as the symbol of Christianity. We need more pastors who, like Paul of the New Testament, will say, “I am not ashamed of the Cross of Christ.” There is a strange and wonderful power when the true meaning of the Cross is preached.

Be Delighted
“Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria Osteen
Psalm 37:4
Have you ever noticed that people will go to great lengths to do things that make them happy? They will work hard towards their goals or achieving a desired result. The delight themselves in their accomplishments. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying your work but God wants us to delight ourselves in Him. He wants us to find joy in serving Him.
This will be a fundraiser for the church. Tickets will be $10 at the door or $7 Early Bird pricing for those pre-registering. Meals will be offered all day to the gamers or others interested in dropping by for homemade biscuits & gravy, Italian meatball subs or baked spaghetti. This event is open to the public and hopes to attract gamers from all backgrounds and faiths to gather together in a “Friendly” atmosphere. For more information, visit www.kernersvillefriends.org/quakercon. For more events see page 10.
That word “delight” actually means “to make soft and pliable.” It gives the picture of clay in the hands of the Potter. God wants us to be flexible with Him and allow Him to mold us and make us into His image. That’s when He can use You and that’s when He will give you the desires of your heart!
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, thank You for your many promises and blessings. I yield myself to You, I delight myself in You and thank You for giving me the desires of my heart. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Lessons for Life with David McGee Senior Pastor The Bridge
“Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.”
2 Corinthians 1:6 If you knew that the pain a friend was facing would lead them to God, would you remove the pain? If you understood that the heartache of a loved one would result in the salvation of their soul, would you allow it to happen? If you realized that the suffering that you are dealing with right now meant that God would use you to comfort another person, would you refuse to endure it? Friend, these are difficult questions but they are important ones to ask. If God is good and can be trusted, doesn’t that mean He has a plan and purpose for everything, even our pain? I’m sure when I was born a deaf-mute baby; there were friends and family who saw it as a tragedy. After all, I had to endure years of surgeries, therapy and difficulties just to be able to talk correctly. There are those in the world who would have looked at my situation and asked “How can a good God exist when children have to suffer like this.” There’s a problem with that thought; they can’t see God’s full
plan. You see, because of my story of hardship, I am able to share comfort with those who have endured similar things. Also, as people hear the amazing story of what God has done in my life, He gets the glory. In the end, my past sufferings have been used to draw men and women into a relationship with God. That, my friend, is worth every moment of pain endured.
Life Lesson: Every pain in life can find meaning by learning to comfort others. Dear God, Thank You for the trials You have allowed in my life. Help me to patiently endure those hard times so that I can be used to comfort and minister to others in their times of need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Mentoring Young People Today Rev. Dr. Rick Meyer Several months ago we got a wake-up call at Fountain of Life. We had been going along as usual with our traditional Youth Ministry when it happened. Our young people started opening up about all of the really hard stuff that they and their friends were facing. We heard about suicide, teen pregnancy, selfharm, addictions, cyber bullying, body image and sex, just to name a few. We said, “Okay, now what do we do?” With the help of a ministry called Girls Nite In (GNI), we formed a chapter for the Piedmont. And so far the response has been amazing. Most of the girls (junior and senior high) come from all over the larger community because there just isn’t anything else like it. The women who volunteer as mentors demonstrate vulnerability by sharing their own stories, leading small group discussions on difficult topics, and staying in touch with the girls between monthly meetings. Of course, girls are not the only ones who face difficult struggles in life. And it didn’t take long before someone said, “We need to start a mentoring ministry for guys.” Unlike the ministry for girls, however, there wasn’t
a model for mentoring guys which meant that we had to develop our own. To my delight, we had a number of men jump in and say, “Let’s do this, and do it well!” Today we have a ministry called Becoming Honorable Men (BHM) for junior and senior high guys. The guys meet a little differently than the girls since they are, well, guys. They usually have a fun activity (cornhole tournament, go-carts, rifle range), food and small groups, along with a talk by one of the men who shares a topic about his own life struggles. The guys seem to really appreciate seeing that it’s okay to have struggles and that there are healthy ways to deal with them.
Girls Nite In and Becoming Honorable Men are open to everyone in
junior and senior high. To learn more go to www.cometothefountain.com and click on the picture designated for GNI and BHM.

Came To Save Us All
Rev. Dr. Ronald Hester is pastor of God’s Way of Life
“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10
Jesus came so that we could experience life in “fullest measure.” God wants to bring us to a place where the living revelation of His Word will do what it says it would do and we are what we are to expect if we believe. Mark 11:23,24 says, “For verily I say unto you, that whosever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” God has given us His principles and planted them in our heart and “hath raised us up together, and made us to sit in heavenly places with Christ Jesus” so we would have His power and ability to defeat the kingdom of the enemy. God’s Word revealed to our heart will help us to see we are greater than we could ever image. As we confess the Word of God the Holy Spirit will bring the revelation to understand the mightiness of God within us. God has accomplished something that brought within us a power and revelation that is so great that only the works of Christ could bring. Every believer belongs to the kingdom of heaven and has the life of the Lord in them. If Jesus, “who is our life” (Colossians 3:4), and we connect with His life is the only reason we exist. Acts 17:28 says, “For in Him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.”
A Power Inside Greater Than Any Enemy
First John 4:4 says, “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because
greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” Also, Romans 8:37 say, “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” We have already won a victory over the enemy, and have overcome them in Christ Jesus. The Spirit has given us an inward awakening, a truth, an audacity against the power of the enemy. Thank God for the power he has given to defeat the enemy, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” (Acts 1:8). We must have an inward understanding that we have been justified in Christ, “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” We cannot have a knowledge of an inward Christ without believing that He paid the price for us all, All to Him we owe. Hebrews 1:3 says, “Who being the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.” Christ the same image of God, has come to our human weakness in order to change us to a divine likeness so that we may have power to overcome and be “more than conquerors” (Romans 8:37). Jesus came so the world will see Him manifest in us.
Power Word
Philippians 2:13, “For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” 2 Corinthians 1:20, “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.”
Vietnam Veteran recently spoke to preschoolers at TBCA Kernersville’s Ben Miller, a Vietnam War Veteran and grandfather of Triad Baptist Christian Academy first grader Elijah Ramsey, with his wife, Susan, came to Triad Baptist Christian Academy to share their hearts with the entire student body. The Miller’s have a passion for sharing with others how a service dog has changed their lives, and how we all should view service dogs and other individuals with service dogs, both giving credit to God for “working all things together for good” in their lives. During their visit, they explained about the many different kinds of service dogs, what
they can do, and how to react when being around a service dog. The kids truly learned a lot and also loved seeing a dog on stage. They now have a new found respect for the many people that use service dogs. Listening to the testimony of a man like Ben Miller helped the kids understand how God works in the lives of His children and how we can support those with disabilities and service dogs. In this case, God used a dog, named Felipe, to be a blessing to this family and others in our area.
BEFORE the resurrection of Christ, the Holy Spirit came upon individuals only on certain occasions for special tasks. But now, AFTER the resurrection, Christ through the Holy Spirit dwells in the heart of EVERY believer to give us supernatural power in living our daily lives. -Billy Graham

Easter egg hunts and egg rolling are two popular egg-related traditions. An egg hunt involves hiding eggs outside for children to run around and find on Easter morning. Eggs are rolled as a symbolic re-enactment of the rolling away of the stone from Christ’s tomb. In the United States, the Easter Egg Roll is an annual event that is held on the White House lawn each Monday after Easter.
