What are Quakers?

When people think of Quakers they may envision people dressed in black who wear tall hats and follow a strict code of conduct and belief. Those people might be surprised to learn that Quakers (or as they are known today, Friends) are a very relaxed, nonjudgmental faith. “A lot of people have misconceptions of Quakers and we’re just now beginning to grow,” explained Pastoral Minister Jerry Gibbons. Gibbons has been the pastoral leader at Kernersville Friends Meeting for 14 years. “They think we’re not part of the mainstream. We’re a movement that gives you opportunities to connect with God. We are not judgmental and we don’t condemn people.” They also don’t strictly refer to themselves as “Quakers.” “We use the word ‘Friend’ more than ‘Quaker,’” stated Gibbons. “But it’s all part of George Fox’s original vision. It’s not a denomination; it is an experience movement. We believe your relationship is between you and God.” The first Quakers lived in mid-17th century England. The movement arose from dissenting Protestant groups that were breaking away from the established Church of England. Kernersville Friends was started in 1906. The Quaker faith originally did not have a

programmed meeting, meaning there was no pastoral minister, and some today still do not because, according to their doctrines, everyone who is a member is considered a minister too. Kernersville Friends, however, does a more traditional-style, pastor-led meeting. “The pastoral minister is part of the program. In the old days, there wasn’t a program, but now we have a pastoral leader,” explained Gibbons. Gibbons also pointed out another traditional practice they no longer adhere to. “Back in history, women sat on one side of the church and men sat on the other. We don’t do that anymore,” he said. The myth that Quakers are very strict and stern is also false, Gibbons said. Gibbons feels that the Friends embrace a simple, nonjudgmental philosophy that is welcoming for all. They have people in attendance with all sorts of religious backgrounds and lots of different denominations. They have a blended style of worship with a special emphasis on friends and fellowship. “To speak about Kernersville Friends Meeting, the emphasis is on friends. It’s a simple faith for a complicated world. You are invited to come and celebrate your faith, simply by connecting to God and connecting to one another,” he stated.

Another myth Gibbons wished to dispel was that Quakers don’t believe in Jesus Christ. “A lot of people think Quakers don’t believe in Jesus Christ. We do, but we just don’t get into telling people how to live their lives. Quakers are very forgiving and nonjudgmental. We give equality to all people. There is no social status here. The preacher is not the boss; God is the boss.”

What do Friends believe? • An authentic spiritual journey involves an immediate inward personal transformation with the living Christ. Therefore Friends experience salvation and wholeness. • Each individual has worth, dignity, freedom and responsibility before God and that each human being is of immense value and worth.

Gibbons went on to say there are not a lot of rituals at Friends meetings and they tend to be more informal in a relaxed atmosphere.

• Worship is a personal positive experience seeking and listening rather than performance.

“Basically when you come to a Friends Meeting, we don’t give you a rule book and tell you how to live your life,” Gibbons said. “We emphasize the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in everyone.”

• Moral purity, integrity, honesty, simplicity, equality, and humility are essential to the Christian life and testify to the nature of our heart.

He continued. “Our mission at Kernersville Friends is all about helping others. Come as you are and leave more like Christ. When you come into our fellowship, you have come into our hearts. I’ve been a pastor for 30 years and this is a very loving church. It’s more of a family atmosphere. You’re more than just a number.” For more information about Kernersville Friends Meeting, email quaker_1997@yahoo. com or visit www.kernersvillefriends.org/

• Christian love and good will as a way of life, which makes hatred and violence impossible. • Seek to extend hospitality to all. • Christ-like love and concern for suffering and unfortunate people must find expression in humanitarian service and social justice.

Q

I went to church this Easter, and the pastor made a remark about people who are just “Christmas-and-Easter” Christians. He was probably trying to be funny, but I don’t think he should’ve put people like me down or made us feel unwelcome, do you? -- Mrs. J.R.L.

A

I’m very sorry you were made to feel unwelcome, although I seriously doubt if that was the pastor’s intention. We’ve all said things we later regretted, and hopefully this will be true of him. The Bible says, “Let your conversation be always full of grace” (Colossians 4:6).

Although you don’t attend church regularly, I’m thankful you wanted to attend this Easter. On Easter, we celebrate the most important event in human history: the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ almost 2,000 years ago. On the cross, Jesus Christ (who was without sin) took upon Himself all our sins, and

by His resurrection He conquered our greatest enemy - which is death.

Because of this, we can have hope -- hope for God’s transforming power in our lives right now, and hope for eternal life in heaven. I hope you sensed something of these powerful truths during this church service (in spite of the pastor’s unfortunate comment). But I hope also that you’ll stop and ask yourself what place God should have in your life. Have you been keeping Him at arm’s length (so to speak) because you want to run your own life and don’t want Him to interfere? Whatever your reason, I pray you will face honestly your own need for a closer relationship with God and open your heart and life to Jesus Christ. Easter boldly tells us that God loves us and knows what is best for us. Why not respond to His love by committing your life to Christ today?

While many in the business world see a great market among seniors, many churches ignore their seniors and seek to reach and minister only to a younger generation. I read and hear often of churches going to a target ministry to reach only the young. In most churches those who are now senior adults helped build the churches and some day part of their estate will go to the church that for many years had been their life. I heard one pastor tell his congregation they were changing their worship style and suggested the older people might want to find a fellowship where they would be more comfortable.

Messages from Billy Graham and Clyde Dupin

Welcome

All Ages to the Family

The church needs a spiritual vision to love and minister to those who have been faithful to God and His Church through the years. Many seniors have material blessings but they still hunger for happiness and think about their eternal future. More than ever the elderly need the stability and loving commitment from a church.

They frequently hear about assisted suicide and often feel neglected by their children and now are disappointed with their church. The church is a growing, changing, spiritual institution. The church must never forget its message and should Dr. Clyde Dupin target to love and serve all of God’s children. Your Seed Determines Your Harvest

“Don’t be misled — you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.” Galatians 6:7

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria Osteen

Have you ever looked at a large, old tree and wondered how long it has been there? It’s amazing to think that at one point that gigantic tree was merely a tiny seed. In the same way, our words and actions are seeds. Our words may be small, but they grow when they are planted. We will always reap a harvest on what we sow! Think about the types of seeds you have been sowing. Are you sowing encouragement, hope, blessing, love? Then that’s what you’ll reap in the future. But if you’ve been sowing criticism, judgment and anger, you’re probably already reaping a bad harvest. It’s time to start changing your seed.

Saturday-Sunday, May 9 & 10, 2015

Operation Christmas Child Each month, the children and youth at Love’s United Methodist Church will be collecting four different items in preparation for Operation Christmas Child. Items for May are crayons, socks (boys and girls), bars of soap (no liquid) and washcloths. Collection bins will be located outside of the church office and in the fellowship hall. For more information, call 336-595-2114. The church is located at 3020 Main Street in Walkertown.

Today, I encourage you to pray and ask God to help you uproot any negative seeds you may have planted in the past and begin sowing good seeds for your future. As you stay obedient to the Word of God, you’ll see those seeds grow. You’ll rise up higher and enjoy the harvest of blessing God has promised you.!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father, search my heart today. Show me any bad seeds that need to be uprooted. Help me, by Your Spirit, to plant good seeds for my future. Use me for Your glory in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Lessons for Life David McGee Senior Pastor The Bridge

“And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make.” Jeremiah 18:4

A mound of clay, by itself, is not a very beautiful thing. It may have some intrinsic value but in the end, it’s still a pile of dirt. That is, until the potter gets a hold of it. Once the potter gets involved, this pile of dirt begins to take shape. As the potter presses in, the clay becomes thinner. The potter then reaches into the center and is able to scoop out all the excess clay within. While the clay began as a formless pile of dirt, it ends up as a beautiful masterpiece. Ephesians 2:10 “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” NLT When God found us, we were like the clay - dirty and formless. We may have tried to mold ourselves but only the potter is able to mold the clay. Once the Heavenly Potter came into our lives, He began molding and shaping us into the image of His Son, Jesus. With each firm press of His

hand, we are changed. With every scrape of His tools, sin falls from our life. This is our Heavenly Father at work and while it is painful, it is worth it. God knows what we need and He is the perfect potter who’s loving hands will sculpt our lives into something far greater than we could ever understand. All we have to do is let Him.

Life Lesson: God desires to make a masterpiece of your life. My Heavenly Potter, I am sorry for my resistance to Your hands in my life. I know that I need to be molded more into Your image, and I ask that You would place my life onto Your potter’s wheel. Carve off the sin in my life and shape me into a vessel that can be used for Your Kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Remember the Enemy Within Rev. Dr. Rick Meyer Pastor Fountain of Life Lutheran When I was a younger person it used to bother me whenever I saw someone show prejudice toward others. My injustice meter went off inside and I became outraged. As I get older, however, I have noticed that my internal response is less charitable than it used to be. I am not happy about what I see within myself and I have to be honest about my own tendencies to categorize whole groups of people because of the poor choices of a few. It is simply easier to put people into strict categories of good/bad, right/wrong instead of taking the time to give everyone a fair chance. My teenage daughters are pretty quick to point out how judgmental I can be, which is really uncomfortable when you consider that I am a pastor and ought to be more “gracious” toward everyone. Then I remind them that, like the song says, “Everybody makes mistakes.” (Yes, I can use the popular lyrics to my advantage as easily as someone can point out how I fail to put my Christian faith into practice.) One of the Christian themes that I find myself going back to over and over again is the idea that we have an enemy that lurks within us. Oh, we are all made in God’s image and share

the marks of God’s good creation. But we also have a certain brokenness that leads us to see others from a very limited (frequently negative) point of view. Thankfully the Christian tradition doesn’t leave us in our brokenness.

The Good News is that we have been rescued from ourselves, and by God’s grace (which, thankfully, never fails) we are being renewed and restored in God’s image. Of course the enemy within continues to insert itself this side of eternity, which should keep us humble and in need of God’s grace. And somehow God keeps choosing to forgive us and not give up on us. So I can only hope that I will continue to learn from the injustice meters of those younger than myself and remember how to give the benefit of the doubt to others.

“So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11 Rev. Dr. Ronald Hester Pastor God’s Way of Life Today begin to stir up your faith and believe in what the Word of God say about what you may be currently experiencing. Mark 11:22 says, “Have faith in God” for everything in your life so you may experience victory over the enemy when he brings trouble into your life. The Word will work for you no matter what you may be experiencing. Even if the situation might seem to be so impossible that it appears no one could handle, however, Jesus said in mark 9:23, “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” We must know that He is a God that is able and nothing is impossible according to Ephesians 3:20, “Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us” and Matthew 19:26, With God all things are possible.”

Restore God made a way through His Word (Proverbs 6:31) for the enemy to restore all the stuff he has stolen from you: “But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold, he shall give all the substance of his house.” Therefore, begin to acknowledge what he has stolen from you, health, time, finance, and etc. and command him to restore sevenfold according to scripture. Believe, do not doubt and watch the Word remove the enemy’s hands off your stuff; “And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you” (Romans 16:20). Amen.

The Word The Word will cause you to embark on a deprograming effort that will allow you to

live the excuse-free, victorious life that God intended for you to live. Words can work for you or against you: “For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned” (Matthew 12:17) and “A fools mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul” (Proverbs18:7). Begin to set a watch on your mouth and say the right things: “If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures”. Also, the Word says, “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree; That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith” (Galatians 3:13,14). Praise God that He offered His only Son, Jesus, to redeem man from the curse of the law and all attacks from the enemy. Next time the enemy tries to bring trouble in your life; you remind him that “I am the body of Christ, I am redeemed from the curse, and I forbid anything associated with the curse to operate in my body. Remind him that your life functions in the perfection to which God created it to be and you forbid any malfunction in your body, mind and soul. This is the proper, spiritual way to speak abundant life over your circumstances.

Power Words Job 36:11, If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.” Matthew 7:7, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as Jesus said,

these.”

Matthew 19:14

I remember the 1989 World Series, with the San Francisco Giants playing the Oakland A’s. Pre-game ceremonies had just begun at Candlestick Park on October 17th. The image on the TV screen became blurry and shaky, not from a lack of camera focus or poor TV reception, but because the Bay area was near the epicenter of a 6.9 earthquake. TV coverage was interrupted for 10 days. During that interim we saw the visual results of the devastation. One of the most dramatic scenes was the image of the double-decker Bay Bridge, with the upper level collapsed onto the lower level below. All around the bay area man-made buildings, streets and utilities were in shambles. In recent weeks we have begun to realize the devastation of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal, causing significant damage to the capital city of Katmandu and nearby towns, plus caused massive avalanches below Mount Everest. An early account of the loss is life is nearly 1,900 people plus the destruction of many ancient structures. These two historic events were both natural disasters that could happen over time in high risk areas. Nearly every part of our world is susceptible to natural disasters, such as tornadoes, flooding, volcanic eruptions, wildfires, mudslides or whatever. There is nothing we can do to insulate ourselves from devastation if we are in its path. If we live in an area that encounters a disaster all that we have built up and prized possessions could someday be all gone. Nothing that man makes is permanent. Compare that to the constant in our life that God offers us. He will be the same – yesterday, today and tomorrow. God is eternal and unchanging. God’s love and his promises are ours for all time. No natural or man-made disaster will diminish the eternal constant of God’s love for you. But, there is more. At the time of Jesus’ crucifixion there was an earthquake and darkness. God delivered Jesus in the resurrection as He will deliver you through the disasters of your life. That is part of the promise that God offers, that He will be with us through the end of the age – now and forever more.

“…And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:20 Bruce Boyer is a local author of a Christian devotional book “24/7: Stories of Faith from Everyday Life.” Free additional stories and information about his book may be found on www.ChristianFaithStories.com.

Church spotlight I will not argue with you about nature inspiring thoughts of God. David said, “The heavens declare the glor y of God, and the firmament showeth His handiwork.” But at the same time, I would give you no comfort about absenting yourself from the house of God. The Bible says,

“Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for it.” If our Lord loved it enough to die for it, then we should respect it enough to support and attend it. I like what Theodore Roosevelt once said, “ You may worship God anywhere, at any time, but the chances are that you will not do so unless you have first learned to worship Him somewhere in some particular place, at some particular time.” (courtesy of www.billygraham.org)
