ADAPTIVE SNOWBOARD EQUIPMENT THAT PROVIDES FREEDOM AND STABILITY TO THOSE WHO NEED IT.
Snowboarding is a winter sport that is loved by many, but not accessible by all. This adaptive snowboard trainer shrinks that gap by allowing people with physical disabilities such as incomplete paraplegia, spina bifida, and cerebral palsy to learn to snowboard comfortably and safely. To ensure the optimal design was reached, this adaptive snowboard trainer was put through extensive user testing with users who have varying levels of physical disabilities. The rigorous testing phase and ‘problems assessed and addressed’ phase yielded a final model appropriate to the allowed time frame and available resources. This working model, constructed with carbon fiber and aluminum, attaches to standard drilled snowboard mounts. The user uses the poles to compensate for reduced leg control, and may choose to add a rear leg brace to further enhance control and stability.

CHARGE YOUR DEVICES USING KINETIC ENERGY EVEN WHILE TOURING THE MOST REMOTE LOCATIONS.
The Kävellä Hip Pack gives backpackers and hikers the freedom to charge their most important hand held devices wherever they go. It is a portable alternative energy device that converts the user’s movement into electricity. It also provides convenient storage for the product being charged. This working model is the culmination of a three month comprehensive design study based on an in depth design methodology. Students were required to conduct thorough research on an assigned topic; in this case it was portable alternative energy. Once a problem was identified, concepts were produced and the chosen concept was refined. This specific project focused on getting power to wilderness hikers and backpackers. Once the two dimensional conceptualization was completed it was time to produce preliminary mock ups to answer specific questions. The questions focused on both the functional and esthetic qualities of the product, such as how big the charging device should be, where the pouch would sit on the user, and how to keep the appearance minimal. Finally, general arrangement drawings were produced to assist the production of the final model. Complete project time: 3 Months
INTERACTIVE MUSIC FUNGI - FUN FOR USERS, AND PROMOTES HEALTHY TREE GROWTH.
Fungi outdoor speakers can be installed in parks and high-traffic forested areas. Powered by solar panels, these mushrooms use bluetooth technology to connect to portable music players and bring the user’s music out to the open. While the users are sharing their musical interests, the sound frequencies are stimulating healthy plant growth in the surrounding foliage. Not only is this project beneficial for nature, it also promotes a sense of community and encourages people to spend time in parks and share their love for music. This was a group project where students were instructed to conduct ethnographic research and use the findings to create a product for the ‘urban forest’.

Vivace is a fruit feeder designed with both the avian and human user in mind. Cedar Waxwings have become more prevalent in backyards containing fruit bearing trees. Vivace’s simple, clean design allows bird lovers to easily attract these beautiful birds into their yard with fresh vibrant fruit year round. The fruit can be easily replaced and the feeder can be removed and cleaned with soap and water. For this project students were required to study a selected bird and create a house or feeder that would be easy to maintain and use by both the human and bird.

THE USE CYCLE OF A BIRD FRUIT FEEDER SHOULD BE ENJOYABLE FOR BOTH AVIAN AND HUMAN USERS.
A CHILD’S CREATIVITY IS BEAUTIFUL AND UNTAMED; THE TOUCAM LETS THEM CAPTURE THEIR WILDEST DREAMS.
Toucam is a camera for children that has a friendly cartoon bird appearance. It comes with a USB ‘nest’ that makes uploading photos easy and fun. Extensive end user testing was performed throughout the design process to ensure ease of use and a proper ergonomic fit. For this project students were required to design an electronic device for a specific market using metaphoric design. Modeling clay was used for the final model.
