Leadership— a popular topic online. When you Google it, you will find numerous definitions, examples and powerful quotes. Some of my favorites come from Bill Gates who emphasizes empowerment; Woodrow Wilson talks about enriching the world; J.K. Rowling suggests we have the power to imagine better, and Michelle Obama reminds us success isn’t about how much money you make but rather about the difference you make in people’s lives.

creating a tangible impact on people’s lives who are in the most need: the coffee growers. Bowron said, “This is part of an overall consciousness about our approach to healthy beverages. If you sell and promote healthy beverages, you should support the health of people who help to produce it. Women in these countries are an integral part of the coffee and tea industry. We have to do what we can to support them and in turn, their families.” It was this focus that led Red Diamond to make a generous contribution to Grounds for Health, an impactful non-profit who has been preventing Cervical Cancer in the Coffeelands Since 1996. Congratulations Red Diamond! As the 2nd oldest continuously owned family coffee and tea company in the U.S., Red Diamond is definitely a leader in the industry. Thank you for playing an influential role in our world’s coffee industry’s future.
Last month I was blessed to interview an industry leader who embodies all of these concepts. Bill Bowron, Chairman, President & CEO of Red Diamond. We discussed many things regarding his vision of sustainability and the future of our industry. In particular, his company’s focus on

Cup for Education’s mission is to help poor, rural coffee communities around the world build schools within their communities, and assist in providing them with teachers and the basic tools needed to educate the future generations of coffee farmers. Remember those back to school adventures shopping for your new loose-leaf or spiral notebook, the perfect pencil case, or the coolest book covers? In in these rural communities there are no pencils to put in those cases, nor books to cover. The children in these areas do not have the basics. With our help though, they can have the materials they need to study hard, create a better future, improve their coffees, their lives, and their countries. A little goes a long way in these countries. For $1,900 you can sponsor a teacher for an entire year in Nicaragua. You can put a roof on a school for $500. Imagine how many pencils $25 can buy. Books cost money, and many of the schools do not supply them to the students. These are just some of the ways your donations can help. Please join in our cause of improving the educational situation of our partners in this wonderful industry of coffee. As we send our kids off to school with their backpacks weighted down with books after downing our morning java, let’s give a thought to who picked the beans, processed them, and helped create that wonderful brew.

Public Auction of Former Atlantic Coffee Solutions Rabin Worldwide will conduct a public auction of the former Atlantic Coffee Solutions plant in Houston, Texas. With a 100+ year history, and over one-million-square-feet under roof, the plant is considered by most the world’s largest coffee manufacturing facility of whole bean roasting and packaging, and large-scale instant decaffeinated production. Referring to ACS as a single plant is a bit of a misnomer; it is actually an integration of multiple plants capable of operating independently or in tandem. Within the massive structure, producers and curiosity-seekers will find a maze of production and packaging floors, packed with coffee roasters, grinders, percolating vessels, twenty retail packaging lines, plus a 16-story decaffeination tower previously producing 88 million pounds of instant coffee products per year. alter R. Progner was born in 1943 in Europe. In 1959, Walter along with his parents Irma and Adalbert Progner, immigrated to the United States. He spoke many times of eagerly waiting to see the Statue of Liberty. His family had work waiting for them when they arrived and traveled to St. Louis, MO. In a few months, they traveled to Philadelphia where they finally settled. Walter’s father was able to find a good job because he was a master European trained butcher. After working with various meat companies, his father began the family business. Walter was attending Drexel University at the time and his parents urged him to join the family business. Walter’s parents retired and Walter took the business in a different direction. Walter traveled to New York and would pick up charcuterie, specialty cheeses, and other specialty foods and come back to Philadelphia and sell what he had purchased in New York. His knowledge was colossal and this was very useful in building the business. Walter was also a believer early on that America had the capability of producing foodstuffs of the same quality of Europe and history has proven him correct. But it was the coffee business that became his first love. Walter was literally, the man of the world. He was a voracious reader and before visiting many countries, he read about the food, culture and gave him a sense of what to expect. He visited most every coffee growing country between the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer. Before it was considered “chic”, his experiences in visiting coffee growing regions in the “out back” took courage and a spirit of adventure. His mantra was “why not”! The move to Lebanon, PA from Philadelphia was a bit of a leap of faith which worked out very well. The employment climate and business as well as easy access to major cities proved to be a very rewarding venture. Walter delighted in the fact that the community they settled in, Mount Gretna, a vibrant art community and a Pennsylvania Chautauqua. Walter’s hobby was work but he had one passion. He spent many decades assiduously restoring a post war classic Mercedes Benz Cabriolet. He was very happy that he was able to find a passionate new owner for it a few years ago. Walter was really a bon vivant and belonged to the following wine and food societies including Chaine Rotisseurs, D’Medici Society, Bacchus, American Institute of Food and Wine and a supporter of the L’ Dame des Escoffier. Walter is survived by his wife, Mim Enck, brother, two daughters and grandchildren! Mim Enck, Walter’s life and business partner, continues to expand the business as part of the long term business plan in their modern facility in Lebanon, PA.
