KISD is thrilled to announce that Nimitz Elementary has been named a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan for being an Exemplary High Performing School. Nimitz is one of 337 schools nationwide out of 98,000+ public schools to receive this award. Only 25 schools out of more than 8,000 in Texas were recognized. “All of the staff and students of Nimitz Elementary are excited and honored to be named a National Blue Ribbon School,” said Wendy Tiemann, Principal. “Nimitz Elementary is an amazing school, and we are honored to be recognized for our success.” The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students either achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap. This award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content. “Being named a Blue Ribbon School is a tremendous honor and accomplishment,” said Dan Troxell, Ph.D., Superintendent. “We are proud of the Nimitz students, staff and administration for being named an elite school for our nation.” Principal Wendy Tiemann and Valerie Kennedy, Nimitz 4th Grade Writing Teacher, will attend an award ceremony in November in Washington, D.C.

Tally Students Learn About Basic Needs Students in Mrs. Griffin’s 2nd Grade class at Tally Elementary recently conducted a hands-on activity to reinforce the basic needs of living organisms. Students first had to answer questions about basic needs correctly. The students then received an empty cup representing their “organism” and cups of colored water representing needs. The needs were: Sunlight – Yellow, Air – Blue, Food/Nutrients – Red, Space – Green, and Water – Clear. Students then added the “needs” in 10-drop increments into their cups. When the liquid in their cup exceeded a pre-marked line, the student “won” and the organism “lived.”

Starkey Students Learn About Fire Safety

Tivy High School is hosting its Annual College Night Tuesday, November 4 from 6-8 p.m. in the halls of Tivy High School. More than forty colleges from across Texas and some neighboring states will be on hand disseminating information and visiting with students and parents. Attendees are encouraged to pre-register online at www.gotocollegefairs.com to print a personalized barcode with their identifying information. Most colleges will have scanners to read these barcodes, saving students the time of filling out information at each booth. “College Night is a fantastic way for students to get to know the programs and colleges available to them,” said Kendall Young, Tivy High School Lead Counselor. “Although some students already know the college they wish to attend, the vast majority need to be presented with options and provided guidance in narrowing down their choices. We hope all students and parents will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.” The event is free and open to all students and parents.

Starkey Elementary students high five Kerrville firefighter Jerremy Hughes after listening to a presentation during Fire Safety Week. Students learned what to do in case of a fire including who to call, how to escape, and what to do if they cannot exit a burning house. The fire department asked students about smoke detectors, offering a free smoke detector to anybody that stops by the fire station in need of one. Students asked many questions, and enjoyed seeing one of their teachers model the firefighter safety gear.

Hal Peterson Middle School Hosts Mix-It-Up at Lunch Students at HPMS were in for a change of taste recently when they entered the lunchroom and were handed a colored slip of paper. The students were instructed to sit at the table matching the color of paper they were given. In honor of National Mix-It-Up Day, founded by the organization Teaching Tolerance over a decade ago, students were randomly placed at tables so that they weren’t sitting with their normal group of friends. The program is designed to break down social boundaries and encourage students to meet new people. During lunch, teachers asked questions which required the students to discuss and decide on answers to write on a white board. Small prizes were given out based on the specific question and answers. From Left: Angelina Hernandez, Samantha Roberts, Alexandria Boerner and Abree Evans eat lunch during Mix-It-Up Day.
