Nimitz Holds Drive for Toys for Tots Starkey Elementary’s Character Council sponsored the Toys for Tots campaign this year. Toys for Tots collects new, unwrapped toys each year and distributes those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community. In all, the school collected approximately 40 toys. The KISD maintenance department provided the boxes to collect the toys. Character council promoted the project with signs in the hallways and daily announcements to encourage students to bring toys.

BTW Students Attend Outdoor Education For nineteen years, Kerrville ISD students going through BT Wilson 6th Grade School have had the wonderful opportunity of attending Outdoor Ed at the H-E-B Foundation Camp in Leakey, Texas. Students spend two nights and three days engaged in activities designed to connect them with nature. Parents and other community members volunteer their time to teach classes or lead small groups. Throughout the camp, student groups are expected to do their share by serving lunch, washing dishes, or cleaning up after an activity. Students rotate through activities including pole fishing, archery and art, as well as classes given by the UGRA and Texas Parks and Wildlife. Outdoor ed provides students with engaging opportunities not possible within a classroom. The relationships forged among students and teachers are a great way to ensure a year full of meaningful learning. Jenny Galvan shows off her first catch

Many teachers gave incentives for students attending and completing all available activities. Students had the chance to measure, do arithmetic, figure out fractions and estimate, all by participating in hands-on activities designed for high-interest learning.

Mrs. Robertson’s Class at Starkey

Mrs. Cervantes’ Kindergarten students dressed up as crayons during the schools Author Dress-Up Day, held in conjunction with the Book Fair. They were inspired by the book, “The Crayon Box That Talked,” a story by Shane Derolf in which a little girl brings crayons together to draw a picture and learn that having many colors created a unique picture. Mrs. Cervantes said, “I teach my students the moral of the story and have them problem solve and analyze the situation in the book. My students learned we all need different abilities and colors to ensure a unique and beautiful creation.”
