Tivy Senior Serves as Student Panelist for TASB Tivy High School senior Benjamin Solder recently served as a student panelist during the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Winter Governance and Legal Seminar in Corpus Christi March 5-7. Solder is one of only four Texas public high school seniors selected out of 137 applicants to serve on the panel, titled: 2015 Student Voices: A Conversation about Education. Solder also will receive a $1,000 scholarship. “The student panel is the highlight of the TASB Winter Governance and Legal Seminar with over 400 school trustees and administrators from across the state in attendance,” said Kathy Dundee, Assistant Division Director, Meeting Planning and Event Services for TASB. “We received many applications from very accomplished students and the selection committee had a very difficult time narrowing it down to only four students. I am certain Kerrville ISD is proud of Benjamin’s success.” Featured on the student panel brochure is a quote from Solder that states, “I now know that contrary to popular misconception, leadership is not pulling others along the path to success as you boldly say, ‘Do this.’ Instead, it is enthusiastically pointing the way and madly encouraging others to realize their own potential. Being a leader in band, I have discovered that the more positive I make others’ experience, the more positive my own is.”

Tivy Inducts Fifty-Nine Students into National Honor Society Fifty-nine students were recently inducted into the Tivy High School Kappa Sigma Chi Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS). NHS is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921. Students are invited to apply if they have a cumulative GPA of 95.0. The application includes a resume of their community service and leadership positions. In addition, applicants wrote an essay about their perspective on one of the four character pillars of NHS. "The scholastic capabilities of this year's group of inductees is truly extraordinary,” said Kelly Dunigan, Tivy High School Advanced Placement Science Teacher and NHS Sponsor. “They are taking more AP and Pre-AP classes, work hard as students and athletes, and contribute to our school community in many ways. I am very proud of them and I look forward to working with them in the future.”

Each year, Tally Elementary Student Council members request student and community donations of used or new dog bedding, food and sometimes toys. When Shelby Fiedler, teacher of the Life Skills class at Hal Peterson heard about Tally’s fundraiser, she asked her students if they wanted to contribute. Naturally, they said yes. The Peterson students traveled to Tally to deliver the handmade toys. HPMS began making Spike Toys - which are dog toys made out of donated recycled materials - last February. The students sell the toys for $5 each. Last year they used the money to help with the cost of field trips and other activities. The operation started small with sales to KISD employees and families. But as word spread, so did community support. A big thank you to the following companies for their support of Spike Toys: All Creatures Animal Clinic, Braden, Kerrville Spec. Ed Dept., Next Generation Produce, Nicole Scissorhounds, Pet Supplies Plus, Schreiner Univ. Tennis Cntr., Town & Country Animal Hospital

Steve Peters with the City of Kerrville Parks Department brought along several creatures for the students to see. Along with this Alligator Lizard perched on his arm, he brought a black widow spider and a corn snake. Students were nervous when Peters told them he was reaching into a bag to pull out a live rattlesnake. They were pleased to find out it was only a rubber snake. Peters talked about the methods each animal uses to hunt prey and protect themselves, especially techniques like camouflage and eye placement. Students also learned that the venom of a black widow spider is fifteen times more poisonous than that of a rattlesnake.
