March 3-7 is Texas Public Schools Week, and Kerrville ISD is joining districts across Texas to Celebrate Texas Public Schools. This year’s theme is “Leave Your Mark.” Texas Public Schools Week began in the 1950’s with a proclamation by Grand Master William Jennings Burris. Burris called upon all Texas Masons to foster a revival of interest in the educational system. Today, public schools bring top quality education to more than 4 million students. Talented teachers and caring staff members and administrators set a strong foundation for this success, which is truly something worth celebrating. We make a commitment to showcase the many wonderful achievements students, teachers and staff members accomplish in our schools each day.
Nimitz Blue Ribbon School Nominee
The Texas Education Agency announced today the nomination of 25 Texas public schools for national 2014 Blue Ribbon Schools recognition. Nimitz Elementary is among the schools in Texas named to this distinguished nominee list. Founded in 1982, Blue Ribbon Schools is a U.S. Department of Education program that recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students perform at very high levels. All schools that have been nominated for the 2014 honor were selected as exemplary high performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. Each school has an economically disadvantaged population of 40 percent or greater. “All of the staff and students at Nimitz Elementary are excited and honored to be named a Blue Ribbon School Nominee,” said Wendy Tiemann, Principal of Nimitz Elementary. “Nimitz Elementary is an amazing school and we are thrilled to be recognized for our success.” The nominated schools must now complete a rigorous application process through the U.S. Department of Education. Announcements of the national award winners will be made in September 2014. Schools that receive the award are recognized at the Blue Ribbon School conference in Washington, D.C.
Starkey Sausage Supper a Huge Success The top sellers in Starkey Elementary’s 52nd Annual Sausage Supper hold a banner announcing the grand total of money raised in this year’s fundraiser - $40,255! Sausage Supper night is Thursday, February 27th from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Buzzie’s BBQ, recent winner of the TLC show BBQ Pitmasters, will provide the meal.

Seniors Earn $800 for 2014 Tivy HS Project Graduation Tivy Seniors Anthony Felps and Brad Mitchell competed in the Texas Department of Transportation’s Annual Project Celebration Workshop and won $800 for Tivy’s Project Graduation Celebration. The boys participated in a safety presentation related to Project Graduation activities. On Saturday, March 1st, Tivy Project Graduation, in conjunction with Ken Stoepel Ford, is hosting a Drive 4UR School event at the Ag Barn located on Junction Highway. For every test drive completed, Stoepel Ford will donate $20 to Tivy Project Graduation, up to $6000! Must be 18 years old with a valid driver’s license to conduct a test drive. BTW National Geographic Geography Bee BT Wilson 6th grade students recently had the opportunity to participate in the National Geographic Society’s 26th Annual National Geographic Bee for students in the fourth through eighth grade. The top five finalists were left to right: Gabriel Treibs, Zeke Alonso, Hans Schlunegger, Georgia Dozer and Meagan Monje. In the final championship round, students were asked three questions and had fifteen seconds to answer. The student correctly answering the most in the three-question set is the winner. This honor went to Zeke Alonso, who correctly answered the following question: The Taklimakan Desert, home to the Uyghur people, is located north of the Kunlun Mountains in which Asian country? (Answer: China). Alonso will advance to the next level of competition, a written examination to determine state competitors. All school winners are eligible to win the national championship and its first prize, a $50,000 college scholarship, at the national competition May 19-21, 2014 in Washington, D.C.
Daniels Robotics Team Advances to Regionals The Tom Daniels Elementary Lego League Team, the Mustang Missioneers, worked hard all year preparing for the first Lego League robotics competition, which took place in New Braunfels on Saturday, February 1st. The students won the Project Research Award and will advance to the Regional Competition at the San Antonio Convention Center on March 1st. The students competed against more than 200,000 students from more than 70 countries. The team constructed a battery-operated robot built out of Lego bricks and programmed to maneuver the Lego world, also designed by the team. The students had to solve several real world problems, including an ambulance rescue and a downed power line. Good luck to the Missioneers as they continue on to the next level of competition.

BTW, HPMS, Tivy Students Win Signed Robert Earl Keen Guitar Three Kerrville ISD students recently had the chance to not only meet Robert Earl Keen, Jr., a local musician, but also to receive a signed guitar and pizza from him and his staff! The students were winners in the annual “What Music Looks Like” contest sponsored by Keen. Below is the full list of winners. Kerrville Public School Foundation “Rounding Up Resources” The Kerrville Public School Foundation is pleased to announce that it is now accepting sponsorships for the Great Duck Race 2014. This year’s theme is Rounding Up Resources for Kerrville ISD. On April 26, 2014, 5,000 rubber ducks will dive into the Guadalupe River at Flatrock Park and race to win prizes for the supporters who adopted them. The Duck Race funds KPSF programs, including: Grants for Innovative Teaching, the KPSF Endowed Science Chair, Teacher of the Year Program and incentives for student academic achievement. Sponsorships range from the Daisy Duck level for $300 to the Divine Duck at $15,000, with six sponsorship levels in between. To become a sponsor, contact KPSF at 830-257-9282.

Early Childhood Center Registration Set to Begin The Early Childhood Center will begin accepting applications for it’s Pre-Kindergarten and Head Start programs on March 17th at 8:00 am. The program is for age and income eligible three and four-year-olds living in the Kerrville Independent School District. Packets can be picked up at 1011 Third Street. Call 257-1335 for more information. In order to apply, complete an enrollment packet and bring the following documentation: - All household income (2013 W-2; 2013 Filed Income Tax return; pay check stubs; TANF; SSI; Child Support) - Child’s birth certificate - Child’s Social Security card - Child’s immunization records (up-to-date) - Parent/Guardian driver’s license - Current Medicaid card; CHIP; or private insurance - Proof of foster care or military service (If applies) - Two documents for proof of residency; driver’s license; property lease; utility or cable bill; Medicaid or Food Stamp Letter; vehicle or voter registration Eligibility Requirements: Child must be 3 or 4 years old on or before September 1, 2014; AND at least one of the following: - Qualify for the school lunch program or be non-English speaking - Homeless - Active duty military; MIA/Injured or killed while on active duty - Foster care - In / was in conservatorship of TxDFPS - Be identified with a developmental delay - Receive SSI or TANF Kerrville ISD provides services and accommodations for children with disabilities.
