MODERNISM MODERNISM

MODERNISM

Modernism was an approach to graphic design that tried to revitalise the way that people and audiences viewed life, art, politics and science. Modernism rejected the art and style of past that was expressive and colourful often decorative and containing meaning, and believed that the design of an object should be based on its purpose, hence ‘form follows function’ Modernists provided

1.

a new form of art that they believed was more appropriate to the present time and focused more on the materials used within the works. Up until then art had been judged on its ability to represent it’s subject in the most realistic way possible. Modernism was about rejecting these judgements and creating pieces that were more abstract, they believed they could transform

society, creating compositions which exist outside of visual reality, and reflecting changes taking place in science, technology and philosophy. In graphic design this translated to clean crisp posters saying only what they needed to, readable fonts like Helvetica and a simple colour palette was used, with no unnecessary decoration or over advertise in their work.

POST MODERNISM POST MODERNISM

POST MODERNISM

Post-modernism is all about playing around with the idea that art is nonsense and doesn’t have an obvious meaning anymore, with this in mind they began to experiment with things like layout, type, image, point size, collage, paint and any other media that takes their fancy, the aim was to make art more interesting and to see where it led. At first many designers thought postmodern

design was nonsense, believing it didn’t have any set structure or ideas behind it. But soon it began to change the way people viewed design, and designers began to realise that they needed to engage with their audiences, they refused to sit back and let their designs do the talking. Designers began to hold their positions as designers by making it clear that their work was created by

a person, and that the person, or the designer, wanted some credit and recognition, he wanted it to be known that he was there, his presence felt in the work, instead of hiding behind neat lines and grid systems that made modernist artist seem invisible because the work was always looking this way, there was no unique quality to it, making it stand out.

2.

BAUHAUS

BAUHAUS BAUHAUS Bauhaus was a school in Germany that combined crafts and the fine arts, and was famous for the approach to design that it publicized and taught. Up until the Bauhaus art had been very traditional, it wasn’t until now that it was truly accepted as a form

3.

of art, it prided itself on simplicity. The Bauhaus school was founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar. The Bauhaus style became one of the most influential currents in modernist architecture and modern design. Bauhaus had a large influence on the next developments in art,

architecture, graphic design and typography. The Bauhaus style was marked by the absence of any ornamentation and by harmony between the function of an object or a building and its design.

Constructivism CONSTRUCTIVISM

Constructivism Constructivism really took off as the Russian revolution began, it saw the beginning of communism which created a classless social order as a result of the soviets rising up and protesting against their government on the grounds that they wanted to make their own decisions and not be controlled by the upper classes. Constructivism used geometric shapes with order to create a universal meaning. Propaganda posters often featured red white and black as these were the colours of political protest, constructivism was simple it rejected traditional art forms opting instead for a more basic look, a less is more approach to graphic design that fully accepted modernity, it was experimental, often without emotion and willing to try new media. A world of peace and utopia was reflected in some works, the roots of which probably stem from the de Stijl movement.

El Lissitzky El Lissitzky designed many of the soviet posters and propaganda as well as being an influential figure in the development of modern typography. The abstract geometric style in his work dates back to the movements before it and the influences are clearly visible within his artworks. Circles, squares and lines are used throughout Lissitzky work and his typography is clear and to the point evidence of futurism can be seen in the way the type is ordered. The colours reflect soviet political protest.

5.

Alexander Rodchenko Alexander Rodchenko was a soviet Russian graphic designer, and one of the founders of constructivism along with Vladimir Tatlin, who said that traditional art was dead and preferring abstract sculptures and reliefs after being inspired by a set of wood reliefs made my Picasso. In Constructivism the material dictates the art, the art does not dictate the material, the focus was more on how materials behaved. Rodchenko created a series of propaganda posters which aimed to persuade the soviets to buy shares in Dobrolet, which was the state airline, by using short straight to the point pieces of text along with imagery to support it. Rodchenko was inspired by Dada artists in Germany such as Hannah Hoch, experimenting with collage in the mid 20s, this photomontage illustrated poet Vladimir Mayakovsky about this poem, Mayakovsky was one of Rodchenkos lecturers and they often worked together creating a graphic bold style in their posters.

I liked the city in flux once I got going with generating ideas, it was a little difficult at first because the brief was quite wide, but then I realised that this allowed me to be more creative. My approach to the research was quite systematic; I looked at artists that use cities in their work, and explored a wide range of media, starting with painters, then photographers and some collage artists, along with illustrators and designers along the way, I did this to give me a broader range of ideas to work with. In my development I tested out a range of techniques that I had researched so that my work would find a natural direction. After doing a few of these tests, including photography illustration, collage, typography and hue experiments I found that colour worked well. I used colour as a major part of my work, using pantone posters and colour samples as a reference point, I used text to make my work more contemporary and used artists like Neville Brody. In order for this to work I had to do it a few times because some times it just didn’t work. The image that is displayed on the page is one of my final pieces, I used the colour element as a large part of my development so that they would stand out once they were displayed, each colour has a different connotation therefore the use of different colours will spark different memories for different people as well as communicating a message of the cities changing. I’ve also created a piece that uses each image and compiled them into a flip book sort of approach, the only difference being that the images twist around instead of flipping, this idea was based on paint colour samples and companies such as pantone, a selection of these are displayed on the next page.

10.

11.

These Images were created by layering up different photographs that I have taken. This layering effect creates very busy images, I don’t think these images work on their own, because they are just too busy, too much is going on at once and the eye doesn’t know which bit to concentrate on. These images do however act as a starting point so that I have something I can work with. The first piece looks at the landmarks of Huddersfield such as castle hill, the views from the top of castle hill looking down over the town. It also shows the church and the inside of the university from a students point of view. Also it shows trees and some greenery. The second another layered image that looks at the town from the point of view of the people in the town, it looks at the high street, and the shops in the town, as well as showing people busy shopping. The image seems to split off into two different streets, one is fairly empty in comparison to the other. Again, though the image is very crowded and needs to be less chaotic. The third image looks at the buildings in closer detail, it focuses more on the signs around the town, and the busy nature of its people. For example the look both ways sign, warning people of traffic, the market sign and the shop signs that entice the customers. The traffic lights and the burger alarm that help people everyone in order, but go unnoticed. The images on the right are the crops that I took from these images and they all look more abstract and bold than the original images.

12.

13.

I took a range of different photographs around Huddersfield and then layered them up so that they formed 3 clustered images. I cropped the 3 images so the new images looked much more abstract and then adjusted the images so that each image had 7 different coloured hues. I had 56 images in total. Once I’d sorted out the hue I began to add type. I made the type look contemporary on these images using Arial and Helvetica in

different ways. I then created a sample booklet of colours and images (on acetate) of the city, as the pages are twisted around, the changing of the colours reflects the change in the city and also each colour can stir up different emotions subconsciously, the bright colours also represent the cities hectic ebb and flow. I then had the idea of using some of these images and placing them on a light box so that they resembled billboards when they are layered onto photographs. I layered them onto photographs of different locations in the world to show that cities are part of a universal language, everyone recognises the daily hustle and bustle and busyness of a city no mater what city they are in.

A set off paintings or info graphics that illustrate what defines and controls us as a species and looks at politics, social standards, technology & fashion. I want to look and try to explain these things from an aliens point of view. For example if you were to explain politics to an alien they would probably laugh at how absurd it is, and how non of the politicians ever do what they say they’re going to do, I could show this by including faces of politicians and then de-facing them so they become humorous. Could explain the social expectation using fashion and the idea that girls can wear skirts but boys cant, and at the same time, boys can wear no tops in public, girls cant. And I’ll explain technology and money as the things that rule and control us all. And also things like using toilets and eating food.

This idea is based on the fact that sometimes we need to see things in order to understand them, I generated this idea by thinking about the things that would be hard to comprehend to an alien, things like what humans are, what we wear, what we look like, how and where we live. I could create a box made of wood or Perspex and then create a series of 3d models to go inside, things like a modal earth, a human, a t-shirt explaining our anatomy, a modal of a house and a car. Perhaps a modal gun and toy soldiers. A dinosaur to explain science and what we know of the planet. Along with this I could create some sort of queue cards that explain what the objects are and how they work.

Idea 4.

I could create a story book for aliens either explaining the human species or depicting an aliens first visit to earth. It will cover things like the seasons and what to wear, explaining weather, animals, houses, transport, hospitals. Each things the alien will encounter and figure out by themselves, the book will also include a section on what we perceive aliens to look like (think E.T, American Dad’s Rodger, men in black). The story will be based on an alien character who travels around earth experiencing new things and learning as he goes, because the nature of the book is to learn, it will be aimed at children as well as aliens. As the alien experiences more of the earth he becomes less shy and makes friends with people along with animals along the way, he is also taught right from wrong on planet earth

Idea 3.

DEVELOPMENT DEVELOPMENT

DEVELOPMENT

Personal approach A personal approach would be all about me and what I thought was relevant, it could go down two routes, either I include objects that reflect the earth today such as a small modal of the earth, and figures of politicians, celebrities, war, climate change and some history, or I could make it more personal by including objects that are not necessarily to do with earth, but to reflect my time in earth, so things like photographs, and objects that reflect me and how the earth has made me who I am. Virtual A virtual box would mean that any body all over the world could have access to it, this means that the box would contain a wide variety of objects and texts from all around the globe and would be a less personal approach, however in doing so it would mean that there would be a wider range of artefacts from earth each meaning different things to different people, a plus side to the virtual box is that size is no issue, for example if someone wanted to put a horse and cart in there for whatever reason, it would be impractical to make a box large enough to host the items, a virtual box offers the solution to size problems and gathers a larger area of earth over different kinds of perspectives.

Indirect approach An indirect approach would include putting other people in charge of the box objects, meaning the things that go in are relevant to them, so the box would be like a time capsule for the human race where each person commits something different, I could also ask people to write on a tag what their object is and why they chose it, that way an alien could also learn what these objects are as well as understand their relevance, people will also have different responses to the ‘why’ so one person might go into detail using a very formal language where as another might opt for a light hearted joke approach.

Physical A physical object has the advantage of being hands on, people can hold it, open it, look inside it and study it, this type of object has the advantage of engaging with different types of learners, as some people don’t necessarily learn through sight alone and we don’t have any way of knowing what methods suit aliens, therefore having an object they can hold and engage with increases our chances of them understanding our world because when objects are in 3D they become easier to interpret than a 2d image or a description. We have the technology to replicate 3d on screen but nothing beats holding an object in person.

21.

After taking all four of my ideas to the table and presenting each one individually explaining their pro’s and cons and making sure each one was fully explained I then put them up for discussion. After a small conversation with this group of people it was decided that my first idea was the one I should take forward as it had the most potential, and could really go somewhere.

of the object and explain that it can literally be anything from technology such as a computer to a photograph of their family, or even a mode of transport or a location, such as a car of a picture of the Eiffel tower. Then once I have enough imagery and explanations I’ll create a book out of the results

When I expanded on my idea I explained that the box could either be virtual or physical. The physical object can be held and interacted with but space for objects would be limited. The other alternative which was the virtual box seamed most popular as it meant that people from all over the world can view and interact with it. The point was made that social media is the best way to go, by opening up and inviting people in to help me with my project, I intend to ask people ‘if the world was going to end and they could only leave one object behind, what object would that be and why’. I’ll then ask for a picture

FINAL PIECE

FINAL PIECE FINAL PIECES These are my final pieces. I started out with an untitled blog with a default background and diamond image and I changed all of this straight away. I customized the theme by changing the background and sidebars to greyish tones, I changes the text to a light white colour, I made the title colour black, so that people look at it first and read it peaking their interest straight away. I made the posts and colour pallets quite minimal so that it looked contemporary and people began to submit their images soon after it was created. To create this blog I worked from a thumbnail that I had created previously, I modified this and changed it several times before being happy with it. As I mentioned before the blog originally had a set of different images that I changed and modified so that they were more in keeping with the look and style of the blog, I wanted it to be modern and contemporary, I wanted the images to really reflect the positivity

25.

of the items and the way I did this was to use high standard photography to show other species of life what earth is like. The book is also based on the blog, but when I created it at first I didn’t like it because the pages were all originally grey to match the theme, but on reflection I decided that the grey colour was a little bit too boring so, I showed it to a few people and they all said the same thing, that the book needed a little more colour, so instead of it being grey I decided to add some colour to different pages, I kept one side of the pages grey though as I didn’t want the book to have no element of the blog at all. I also changed the cover too, originally it was blocky, the title, author and other bits of writing were in different blocks, the background was brown with a leather effect and the foreground was a light grey, I didn’t feel that it was right for the brief in the end, this is because originally I wanted the cover to be quite plain and not to give too

ES much away, but then I realised that the minimalist approach to a cover wouldn’t work because the cover needed to be the thing that drew everyone’s attention in, the cover was the key point in grabbing peoples attention and making them pick up the book to read it. So I changed the cover by making it lighter and having all the images faded out in the background this meant that the book now has an interesting looking cover that people would want to read if they were to see it. The introduction in the book explains all about how the book came about and explains the brief and how I approached the brief as well as my reasoning behind creating a blog and a book, It explains my ideas and my aims so that the audience know why I’ve chosen to approach the brief this way as my original idea was to create a box, I needed to make it clear that to make the ‘box’ accessible I chaos to create a blog so everyone could post.

and

one from El Lissitzky. I

chose

to

develop

the one based on the work of El Lissitzky because

It

was

the

one which looked best and would have more practical use. This is the typography work that I’ve done based on work by El Lissitzky. I took the curves and straight angles from the piece on the right, then I created two type faces

based

on

this,

the thing about this typeface is that each letter from A -Z is the same length and the same hight, I thought that this would give the typeface a unique look and make it so that it would stand out against others, I made two versions of this typeface as once I’d made one I looked at it and I realised that it focused more on the horizontal length of the letters, which isn’t always appropriate for everything. With this in mind I made another typeface that focused more on the vertical length of the letters. , This now makes the typeface more accessible to people as they have the option of a more linear version or a

slightly wider

version, depending on the use or publication, one will be more useful than the other, I got the idea of using the curves and straight lines from the centre of the image, the curved lines formed an A to me and with these basic shapes

29.

I could then begin to create all of the other letters using the same lines and curves as the ones already established, I wanted the typeface to look quite basic and simple because I thought that more people would use it if this was the case because people often need a practical font more than they need a decorative font.
