HOLMFIRTH ARTWEEK 2017
CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME TO HOLMFIRTH ARTWEEK 2017
On behalf of Holmfirth Macmillan Committee it is my pleasure to welcome you to Holmfirth Artweek 2017. I am also particularly delighted to announce that the Holmfirth Macmillan Committee is the 2017 winner of the prestigious UK Macmillan Committee Award. On behalf of the Committee Bob and Sandra Riley received the award at the National Awards Ceremony on 19th May 2017. In making the award the Macmillan National Awards Advisory Panel and Macmillan’s Board of Trustees have in particular recognised the exceptional contribution of the volunteers and artists who have, over the the last 50 years, made Holmfirth Artweek one of the most successful charitable art events in the country. Artweek is Holmfirth Macmillan Committee’s largest fundraising event and has, alone, raised £887,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
4
In addition to raising funds to develop the essential work of Macmillan Cancer Support in the area Artweek is now a major event in the Holmfirth Calendar. Artweek provides the opportunity for the public to purchase original high quality art by local, regional and national artists displayed in the Civic Hall and the Fringe Venues. It also attracts visitors to Holmfirth and is a great occasion for local people to participate and renew friendships. So in anticipation of another successful Artweek and celebration of the Macmillan Award, I would like to say thank-you to all the volunteers, artists and visitors who make Artweek such an enjoyable and worthwhile event. Eric Lee Chair, Holmfirth Macmillan Committee.
THE GUIDE
TREASURER’S WELCOME TO HOLMFIRTH ARTWEEK 2017
Hello and welcome to Holmfirth Artweek 2017 and thank you for supporting this ever popular annual event in its 51st year. If you are reading this then you will have noticed that the Artweek catalogue has been reduced in size to a smaller booklet rather than the A4 magazine size of previous years. It’s also no longer a catalogue featuring all the artworks displayed in the exhibition it’s now changed to being more of an event programme. All our participating artists will also have been aware that the applications process has also changed - “yet again”, some will say - however we are confident and happy that we’ve now got a future proof system in place that works well for both applicants and organisers. We are pleased the way the process has worked this year and feedback from applicants has been very positive. Since our 50th birthday last year the organising team underwent some changes in membership, the biggest of which was the retirement of Bob Riley from the Treasurer’s role. I think it’s fair to say that Bob was Artweek and without his thirty odd years of involvement the event just wouldn’t have taken place and developed into what it is today. So, from everybody on the organising team we would like to say a huge, well deserved thank you to Bob for his tireless work over the years. Having worked alongside Bob at last year’s event, I have now fully taken on the role of treasurer for Artweek and I’m hoping (and praying) I can maintain his high standards. All the financial processes are now computerised to make things easier to manage.
However, as part of this change, and in response to changing bank practises, this year’s event represents the final year that we will be accepting cheque payments for applications and for making payments to artists for sales at Artweek. Whilst we are aware some of you may be disappointed by this decision, making and taking payments online is much easier logistically for us (and you) and incurs fewer bank charges. Last year we saved £1,000 by implementing online payments - all of which increases the money going to Macmillan. The other major change, that most locals will be aware of, is the transfer of ownership of the Civic Hall, our main venue, from Kirklees Council to Holmfirth Parish Council. We are pleased to report that this is now complete and we can safely say that the future of Artweek is secure for the foreseeable future. We also now have a strong and committed organising team in place which features several new members with an excellent range of experience. We all volunteer our time and skills freely, so one of our main objectives is to maintain and develop the success that Artweek has become as efficiently as possible. We hope this is reflected in this years event and wish you all an enjoyable visit. Spend, spend, spend - you know it’s for a good cause. Adrian Burnham Artweek Treasurer

HOLMFIRTH ARTWEEK 2017
SARAH STOKER FEATURED ARTIST 2017
This years featured artist is Barnsley based artist Sarah Stoker. She’s well known from previous artweek exhibitions for her ceramic and painted work. She studied textiles, surface pattern, ceramics and glass at Barnsley Collage, finally specializing in ceramics at Carlisle and has been fortunate enough to be taught my some talented artists and ceramicists: Greg Allam, Steve Ellis, Steve & Alison Ogden and Jim Malone to name but a few.
She won ‘young designer of the year’ in 1989 and was awarded a grant from The Prince’s Trust in 1990 to help set up a pottery studio. Moving to her latest premises in 2007 she now has the luxury of working from a studio in her garden, surrounded by inspiration.
I ASKED HER A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT HER WORK :Mick: H ave you always been an artist? If not, what led you to become one? Sarah: I can’t remember a time when I haven’t painted. From being very small and getting my first set of poster paints to trying out different surface decorations on the pottery. I’ve dabbled in other forms of creativity but always return to my paintbrushes. Mick: I ’m guessing you don’t work straight from life so do you use photos / sketches etc? Sarah: I work from photographs and sketches. I travel extensively for work and exhibitions from RHS gardens to beauty spots all over Britain. Planning out delivery routes to take in scenery along the way.
8
Mick: What were the early influences on your art and where does your inspiration come from? Sarah: The pottery has been all consuming for over 20 years. I fell in love with ceramics whilst at college when I realised it was such a surprise every time you opened the kiln with colours changing dramatically with each firing. Small changes with the colours and glazes and the almost infinite amount of ways to cover the surface of the pot are what I find fascinating. Surface pattern, textures, colour, flora, fauna, mother nature, numerous artists, the way light plays and shadows form. Anything and everything can be an inspiration.
THE GUIDE
Mick: T ell us a bit about your working processes, how complicated are they ? Sarah: I don’t like to limit myself to one medium when painting, I feel that more depth is achieved when the rules are bent slightly. I also like to work on different surfaces sometimes working on a few paintings at any given time. Times change and now I have a little more consistency with the colours. The pots after being slip cast are all hand decorated using freehand, tube lining and sgraffito. Each piece has a minimum of three firings on 3 separate occasions which makes them more robust and fully functional. Mick: What can we expect to see at the exhibition this year? Sarah: For the exhibition this year I’ve put together a collection of pottery comprising vases, jugs, bowls , teapots and mugs all decorated with my favourite designs. The paintings have been painted over the last 18 months and plot my travels around Britain. I will also be exhibiting some giclee prints of my paintings and a wide selection of cards. While the exhibition is on, I shall spend at least part of every day working in the gallery upstairs.

The prize is a £100 voucher to spend in the main Artweek exhibition in the Civic Hall.
PRIZE WINNERS FROM LAST YEAR’S EXHIBITION WE LOVE IT EMMA OUGHTIBRIDGE
JOHN SHAW 3D PRIZE MICK KIRKBY-GEDDES
I was ecstatic to have won the “we love it” award. I raced around the show looking for my first piece of artwork to buy with the prize winnings. I chose a beautiful abstract landscape by Tonie Rigby. I’d seen her work previously at a friend’s house and always admired its expressive use of luscious greens. It now takes pride of place in our living room.
Although I’ve worked on Holmfirth Artweek for 20 years this is the first time I’ve won a prize and it was a real honour to do so. I knew the piece I’d made was appealing what with all the baby frogs eyes peering at you and my wife confirmed this after she’d done her stint on the raffle table. ‘People just kept smiling as soon as they saw it’ she said. Once I found out I’d won, I knew exactly what I wanted to spend the prize money on, a small abstract by Emma Oughtibridge. I’ve always liked her work and this piece was particularly lovely with its red and gold colours plus it was very reasonably priced so I also managed to buy most of a silver ring by Alex Hutchinson too – for my wife.

THE GUIDE
NEWCOMERS’ PRIZE ZOE STAINTON
BEST PICTURE IN SHOW LINDSAY NORMAN
The newcomers’ prize was for two pieces, fleeting fox and running hare. I was really surprised to receive the prize, even Paul Rothery said to me “Do you see anything different about your work? At first I thought maybe something had happened to one of the pieces! So l was really pleased and my daughter Evie who was with me gave me a big hug she was just as excited as me, so thank you! Paul was the sponsor for the prize so he very kindly let me choose a silver bracelet and a silver leaf pendant. The two pieces were both made from wool and needle felted. They were supported by metal wire on a reclaimed wood plinth and vintage mill bobbins, a nod to the valley’s wool and mill industry and inspired by vintage toys. I have only recently started making pieces in wool. Initially I studied Ceramics for my Degree and Masters but enjoy trying new materials and developing new skills that I can use in the Community Art projects I regularly facilitate. I really enjoy the tactile quality of wool and have been inspired to start making wool animals full time and have recently made work for The Country Living Christmas Fair.
I was surprised and thrilled to receive the best picture in show prize at 2016 Artweek, for my large screen print of “Lenny” the Hare. I have always had the need to create, my artwork has evolved throughout the years and currently I am enjoying the process of screen printing. Working with charcoals, inks and pencils I work quickly trying to capture my subject’s energy, life and vitality rather than total realism. From this initial artwork I create individual images to make my screens for printing. The process disciplines my tendency to overwork an image. Screen printing’s unpredictability pushes the limitations of the original drawing. From the loose mark making, irregularities and natural differences, a print evolves adding spontaneity to the finished piece. I often think about placement of the subject and its relation to the space surrounding it, this adds a new dimension to my work and creates a narrative. Currently I am experimenting with different printing disciplines and other mediums. I am very proud to be part of Holmfirth Artweek raising money for Macmillan, Artweek 2016 really gave my confidence a massive boost and I am hugely excited about the direction my work is going and evolving, finally expanding my art into galleries, web site and an Etsy shop.

HOLMFIRTH ARTWEEK 2017
INTRODUCING THE HOWARD ASHER PRIZE
After a lifetime of working with colour and pattern in my career as an international Textile Designer I would like to present a prize to an exhibit within the Holmfirth Artweek Exhibition for the innovative and exciting use of colour in any medium. I studied at Huddersfield School of Art and then at the Central School of Art and Design in London specialising in weave and print design for fashion and home furnishings. After completing my studies I was awarded a Leverhulme Study Travel Scholarship which I spent travelling around Europe for eight months gaining inspiration and knowledge from visiting factories, studios and museums. I then embarked on a freelance career designing fabrics primarily for the US and European markets. I exhibited regularly at Trade Fairs in Lille, Frankfurt, Paris, Como, New York and finally in Shanghai. Colour has been an integral part of my life as a designer whether working with colour trends or designing for different cultures and climates. I began painting acrylic canvases about ten years ago and have regularly shown at the Holmfirth Artweek. I was awarded the Calder Graphics prize in 2009. Initially my work was purely abstract and geometric but I have now turned to landscapes incorporating colour and patterns. Howard Asher Textile Designer

THE GUIDE
MACMILLAN IN YOUR COMMUNITY
On 31st March 2017, Lady Halifax, President of Macmillan - along with staff and volunteers - officially re-launched The Jayne Garforth Macmillan Information Centre at The Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax. VENUE 2 - DAISY LANE BOOKS BACK TO ART SCHOOL; THIS TIME I’M ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE!
THE VENUE
THE EXHIBITION
THE ARTISTS
A quaint, cobbled passageway opposite the bus station car park leads to one of Holmfirth’s most historic old buildings, now the home of Daisy Lane Books. The 250 year-old building is the home of a thriving shop, specialising in good quality secondhand books. Whatever the subject, you are likely to find the type of book you are looking for after a little browsing. As you wander round you will see shelf after shelf crammed full with volumes on everything under the sun.
As you can probably tell from the exhibition title, I have gone back to academia, but this time i’m the tutor at the Batley School of Art; one of the last traditionally geared up art schools around. So I have hung up my comic books for a year and decided to re-visit all of those facilities and techniques that I had once utilised when they were available to me. This is a celebration of the multidisciplinary explorations in their finished forms that I have created over the past year. Enjoy!

Fair Trader stocks unique home and gift wares, fashion accessories, toys, and food and drink - all specially sourced for their ethical and environmental impact. A not-for-profit cooperative supporting artisans worldwide and showcasing local designer-makers’ products.
Local, award-winning Holmfirth artist Zoe Stainton creates a range of felted woodland creatures in the form of stunning sculptures that are inspired by the sculptural possibilities of wool! “I love the scope and technique that the process of needle felting gives me and love the tactile qualities it provides. Surrounded by farms and beautiful countryside on the edge of the Peak District National Park, I was naturally drawn to depicting local wildlife and farm animals.”

THE VENUE
THE EXHIBITION
THE ARTISTS
Full Life Church has this wonderful belief that brings life and fellowship into the centre of everything they do. “We believe that church should be dynamic, exciting, relevant and able to touch the very heart of everyone” said pastor Ian. “The name of our church reflects what we believe about the ministry and meaning of such a gathering. “If you have never been to one of their services then I suggest you go along and experience it for yourself.”
Calista Renee is a Seattle area artist whose work is both refreshing and classic. Her inspiration is drawn from a deep appreciation for the intricacy of creation. She borrows loosely from classical illustration techniques while composing the piece in a minimalistic way for a compelling aesthetic that complements most any decor. Meet the artist on opening night with Prosecco and snacks, from 5-8pm, or on closing night for a Yorkshire specialty, pie and peas, from 5-8pm

THE EXHIBITION
THE ARTISTS
Nestled in the heart of the magnificent Pennines, we’re here to offer a tranquil space to relax, re-centre and rejuvenate. Our Centre has been created as a safe space for everyone; our door is always open to clients who want to maintain or improve their vitality and wellbeing and we especially welcome clients that are looking for care and support when faced with personal health challenges.
John Holts’s recent work resonates with the spirit of flow and fluidity: “My interest in ‘flow’ relates to my immersion in the flow of creative thought and its influence on health, happiness and wellbeing, both psychological and physical.” Combining the process of ceramics, drawing in clay, firing and adding oxides, colour slips and transparent glazes together with pastel drawings and paintings, his explorations of flow occur using the solidity of fired clay to the fluidity of pastel and paint.

Sid’s Café is the cafe made famous by ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ - the world’s longest running sitcom. We are open 10am daily for hot and cold drinks, freshly made sandwiches, toasties, homemade soup, jacket potatoes, scones and delicious homemade cakes. We also sell a wide range of souvenirs. We have a sunny tea garden at the back of the cafe.
I am a local girl who studied at Holmfirth High School, Huddersfield New College and went onto study Graphic DesignIllustration at Northumbria University. This summer I graduate with a view to start a career in illustration, ideally in the greeting card / stationery industry. My exhibition will showcase some of my university work including patterns, stationery and cute characters. Please come and take a look if you are interested in illustration.

Jane Austin is a professional watercolour artist and tutor. The subjects of her work are varied but all are approached from the base of a well observed drawing. Layers of transparent paint build a depth of tone, texture and colour before detail emerges through negative dark shapes and highlights. Realism rises out of abstract marks. A bold approach with a traditionally sedate medium. Punch Bowl House, Boothtown Road, Halifax, West Yorkshire, HX3 6UB, UK janewatercolour@aol.com 01422 353308 facebook.com/JaneAustinWatercolour
Frances Barkworth hand makes her jewellery in her studio in the neighbouring village of Penistone. She often works in Sterling Silver or Gold with elements of copper, brass or semi-precious gemstones, to add a colour and sparkle to her pieces. Frances draws inspiration from her beautiful surroundings and makes jewellery that can often be worn in multiple ways; Stacking Rings, Reversible Pendants, Ear Climbers etc. 11 Church Street, Penistone, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S36 6AR, UK hello@francesbarkworth.co.uk 07545 978793 facebook.com/FrancesBarkworthJewellery/ twitter.com/hello_frances
The inspiration for my work comes from the way I see and experience the natural world. Fleeting impressions are captured with mark and colour to build layers of paint that describes my relationship to the subject. I enjoy painting primarily with oil and watercolour but have also experimented with acrylic, encaustic and “painting with fibres”. I have been teaching art for over 20 years and am available to deliver workshops and short courses within Kirklees and Calderdale. 15 Hallbower, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, HD4 6RR, dancesquietly@yahoo.com 07881 481229 Aquarius Arts @ageofaquarius56

I am always searching for beauty. Whether I am painting an awe-inspiring view in New Zealand or overgrown nettles in my village both these subjects attract my interest in an even way. I am trying to capture a unique moment of life, which on its own is telling a story. I am interested in painting “portraits” of things and places. A portrait of a stone wall, of an old cottage or a path running through the valley are as dear to me as could be a portrait of a dear friend. The experience of the Plein-Air is an ideal working environment for me. I start from investigating the area on my bicycle, noting the places of interest and making quick sketches. Next step will be to develop larger scale work in the studio. I have exhibited my work at the Annual Exhibition of Royal Society of Watercolour Artists and Annual

Born in Cheshire in 1948, Jane developed both a love of landscape and an interest in drawing and painting from an early age, influenced greatly by her artist father. She studied at Leicester and Maidstone Colleges of Art from 1967-71 and is a member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts and Leeds Fine Artists. She has exhibited widely and her work - which includes paintings, prints and photographs - is held in both public and private collections in the UK and overseas. She lives and works in Huddersfield. She says: “I paint mostly in oils and watercolours. Watercolour appeals to me because of its immediacy of use and the luminosity of its colours. When working outdoors I prefer to use oils. I carry out small paintings in one sitting and produce larger works in the studio.” 23 Ashfield Road, Birkby, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, HD2 2XG, UK janeburgess48@aol.com 01484 422027

Dip Art & Design, Bath Academy of Art, Wiltshire. I have had a passion for drawing and sketching all my life, but only started painting in the 1990s. I still do a lot of sketching and drawing which I find absorbing and often use as the starting points for my paintings. I mainly work in acrylics, pen and ink and oils. I am always looking for a change in direction so not to get into the trap of being labelled with one particular style. I will continue to paint the subjects that delight and excite me, mostly landscapes and waterscapes, but variety is the spice of life, so I experiment with different approaches in putting ideas down onto canvas or paper. Adding texture and collage to my work has given another dimension to some of my recent work. Anna Childs is a cabinet-maker with over 20 years self-employment and teaching experience. Anna is currently teaching at The Sheffield College (in the past she taught furniture design and making at the University of Lancashire). Anna is a member of “Northern Contemporary Furniture Makers”. Much of Anna’s time is spent teaching cabinetry, but in her free time she enjoys designing and making her own furniture. She regularly exhibits her work; including an annual invitation to exhibit Holmfirth Artweek. Anna makes furniture for our everyday lives using simple forms and elegant shapes. At the moment she is using colour in her work by using Valchromat (a coloured engineered board). Anna’s “Leaning Shelf Unit” was shown as part of a major exhibition “Made in Sheffield” at the Millennium Gallery. It was initially designed to display ceramics; recent versions of the Shelving Unit have been developed to meet client requirements, for example to house a collection of cookery books. 6 Raven Road, Nether Edge, Sheffield, south yorkshire, S7 1SB, UK childs.anna@googlemail.com 07905 550096 @AnnaMChilds

Since graduating from Stourbridge I was based in The Piece Hall Halifax for over 30 years, now I have moved my gallery and studio to Hebden Bridge, where you can see all my work on display and commission individual pieces . I have a varied selection of works from brightly coloured jewellery, mirrors and lighting to large wall panels and splash backs. Working with glass is always surprising you never quite know how a piece will turn out, I’m always experimenting with different materials and inclusions to achieve unique results, it makes it all more interesting for everyone. Recently I’ve been working with eucalyptus leaves and honesty seeds as inspiations for some jewellery commissions. Hebden and the craggs have been inspiring my landscape panels, some of which I have made into large illuminated wall panels and some as smaller table lights. I also make much smaller plaques ideal for gifts. I’m open most days but please check my web site before making a special trip . JACQUELINE JOANNE COOKE SCULPTURE LAITHWAITE-RAWES / BENJAMIN JAMES CONNOLLY JEWELLERY
Jacqui has been a Silversmith for over 30 years. Born in Salford and later moving to Yorkshire, her natural flair for art and design has won her many admirers and even an award from Prince Charles. Her vision and ability to create unique jewellery has gained her customers worldwide. After leaving Salford Technical College, where she studied art and design, she was fortunate to get a silversmith apprenticeship at Manchester Craft Centre. Originally based in Holmfirth, she employed a young talented apprentice Benjamin Connolly. An opportunity arose to relocate to the lovely Victorian Byram Arcade in Huddersfield, so they gathered up their tools and moved to a new studio and set up in partnership, and “The Guild” was formed. At “The Guild” you can have a piece of jewellery made to order, or choose from the display. Old gold jewellery can also be redesigned into a more contemporary design. “The Guild” displays works of Jacqui and Ben and other artisan jewellers. Dianne creates hand built ceramic boxes, wall pieces and other matt glazed forms in textured stoneware. They evoke a feeling of the seashore and coastline so are imagined seascapes/landscapes rather than illustrating a specific view. Some are stormy and others quiet and calm. She uses a variety of found objects and textures to exploit the clay surface. In contrast the inspiration for her black and white work is drawn from African adobe architectural details. She works from her garden studio in the Aire valley and has exhibited widely over the past 30 years. 36 Scott Lane, Riddlesden, Keighley, West Yorkshire, BD20 5BT, UK dianne.cross@blueyonder.co.uk 01535 606814 Dianne Cross Ceramics

Born in 1951 and originally from Catterick in North Yorkshire, Alan Dalgetty lives near Holmfirth. Working from his studio at the North Light Art School, Alan is a landscape painter and photographer. “I am certainly inspired by the countryside that surrounds me; the colour of it, the shape of it and the very presence of it.” Working with mixed media enables him to explore and be more experimental with paints and inks. The addition of a camera to his artist’s ‘toolbox’ has opened up a new, creative avenue, enabling him to see and capture images in a more immediate way. He says it will never replace drawing or painting but that it allows him to capture and present moments that appeal to him. “He certainly understands the colours of his beloved Yorkshire Pennines and seeks to make them come alive. His stunning landscapes are sometimes dark, sometimes vibrant but never dull!” 13 Oak Tree Avenue, Scholes, Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, HD9 1SD, UK alan.dalgetty@gmail.com 07956 362951
I began my career as a trainee artist at Sheldon Advertising Agency whilst also attending Leeds School of Art. After a break I spent three years at Swarthmore College studying painting and life drawing under the tutelage of Mary Lord. I am an exhibiting member of Leeds Fine Artists.

PAINTING, ACRYLIC Greetings from The Urban Mermaid. I hope you enjoy my ‘otherworldly’ creations. I’ve always made things, from a small child, trying to capture the beauty and magic I saw in everyday life. I see myself as a translator, spreading enchantment with the creative process. My inspiration comes from a joy in nature, which is the ‘jumping off point’ for folklore, my other passion. Our heritage is rich with stories handed down through the generations, and it has been my privilege to draw on this wellspring for over 30 years. I work mainly in clay as this uses all the elements: clay from the earth, water to manipulate, air to dry and fire to cure. Each piece is as individual as a thistle on the wind, whether the result is a faery, an owl or a mermaid... Feel free to discuss any commissions you may have in mind and I shall endeavour to create exactly what you desire. 12 Industrial street, Todmorden, West Yorkshire, OL14 5BP, UK allmybeautifulthings@gmail.com 07597 768187 facebook.com/theoriginalurbanmermaid/?fref=ts

I was born in Huddersfield and trained in Liverpool in the early 70’s as an Art and English teacher. Having worked with a range of 2D and 3D materials over the years acrylics have enabled me to explore the excitement of mixing and exploring colour. Artists like J.M.W.Turner,Monet and Cy Twombly, who would push and pull colour across a canvas, have been a great inspiration to me. I have tried to imbue my work with this passion, responding to a wealth of changing Breton countryside and our own incredible environment in and around Yorkshire. 43 Heaton Road, Gledholt, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, HD1 4HZ, maggiedimmock49@yahoo.com 01484 303613

PAINTING, OTHER Ever since I did pottery at school when I was 12 I'd wanted to learn more, but this didn't happen until many years later when I joined John Shaw's pottery class at the Polytechnic and then I was hooked for life. I've also been on pottery holidays and courses over the years with many excellent teachers and my skills developed as a consequence and I bought my own kiln and wheel. I did a City and Guilds Further Education Teachers course, and after several years of doing library work, I went on to get a job with adults with learning difficulties as a pottery instructor and day centre officer - I absolutely loved this. We did mainly hand building and some wheel work. After retiring I carried on as a volunteer. My own work is made on the wheel and I specialize in making small pots. Currently I enjoy making small bowls and dishes which are useful for serving food, as well as miniature jugs, vases and bowls. 15a Royles Head Lane, Longwood, Huddersfield, HD3 4TU, UK margaretfathome@gmail.com 01484 654431

Using a wide range of favourite subjects: flowers, animals, buildings, vehicles and cute characters. Commissions are also taken, including pet portraits. We are John & Dawn Field, contemporary jewellery makers from Yorkshire and Lancashire who met while studying for Ba(Hons.) degrees in 3D Design and Fine Art over twenty five years ago. Since graduating we have successfully earned a living from making and selling our Contemporary jewellery ranges through quality craft centres and art galleries nationwide, as well as in over 75 Dazzle selling exhibitions. Our Asymmetrical range features a selection of 12 different gemstones, some of which are made to our specifications and are therefore unique to us. The charm of the range is the use of asymmetry, with one earring having a gemstone and the other some brass decoration. More recently we have been experimenting with an ancient Korean technique called Keum Boo where 24ct gold is fused to silver using heat and pressure. We then use punches to stamp marks into the surface in order to depict creatures or to give the impression of found objects from another time or culture. Pottery and more recently woodturning are my passionate lifelong hobbies over the last 60 years. As an inventor I tend to lean more towards items which have a functional or entertainment value rather than those which have a purely artistic appeal. Since retirement 10 years ago I now work at my studio/ workshop seven days a week alternating equally between potting and woodturning which keeps me both busy and gratified. I try to pass on my pottery skills by teaching seriously interested students who are keen to learn the essential basic skills. I do not seek financial profit from my efforts as I am greatly rewarded by appreciation of the results. 100/102 Northgate, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, HD1 6AR, UK parapotter@hotmail.co.uk 07785 718737

PAM GOODISON GLASS ARTIST GLASS
Pam has been working with stained glass for the last twelve years. She started by attending a ‘workshop’ at a local college in Sheffield and caught ‘the bug’. Pam has worked in both the copper foiling and leaded techniques of making stained glass. She has successfully designed and made windows for herself and commissions. Pam has also made smaller pieces such as sun catchers and 3D work. In 2012 she studied the art of fused glass at Darton College. This has opened up a world of different creative opportunities for her. Pam says ‘ I love working with glass. The colours and effects created can be amazing. I have always had an interest in the stories told in old church windows. The sun shining through them creates a sense of spirituality’. Pam studied art at school and was to go on to Degree level. She was unable to follow her dream at the time, but has found that her ‘creative style’ has appeared in other ways, namely through her eye for design and work with glass. 30 Pot House Lane, Stocksbridge, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S36 1ES, Uk pamgoodison@btinternet.com 07511 781322 m.facebook.com/PamGoodisonGlassArtist/ @pam_goodison

My fascination with the natural world and landscapes led to a career in geology and, in my spare time, the making of nature inspired arts and crafts at evening classes. I learnt how to make silver jewellery at the Leeds College of Art, print making at the West Yorkshire Print Workshop in Mirfield and willow weaving at York College. A collection of photos of things I have created over the years can be found on my blog. I hope you enjoy looking at my locally inspired jewellery.

Gower studied at Batley College of Art in the 1980s, where he specialised in fine art and sculpture. Over the years he has been developing a unique style with his ‘Reflections’ series, in which observation and chance is key to his practice. This “voyeuristic approach” allows him to capture the fleeting moments of strangers’ daily activities. The semi-abstracted, figurative compositions have both a real sense of serenity and intrigue. They quietly invite the viewer to create narratives about the anonymous characters unknowingly immortalised in oil paint. Commissions include that for the Duchess of York, Purdey Guns, The Lord Mayor of Westminster. SARAH HARRIS SCREEN PRINT
The unstructured nature of felt with it’s endless potential gives me freedom of expression for my imagination. It also offers the opportunity to exploit the many techniques of working with textiles that I have gained over the years. The incorporation of natural materials & methods introduces a contemporary approach to the ancient & traditional technique of hand felt making. For me contemporary felt carries a bond from the past but with a focus on the future. Holme Castle, 1 Holme Village, Holmfirth, W. Yorks., HD9 2QG, UK jill@jillhayfield.com 01484 680680
BABS HEAD My work consists of limited edition screen prints that begin as original pen drawings. A limited colour palette is used throughout to enhance the line work, adding depth and interest through placement and tone. I have always enjoyed the exploration of landscapes and I combine this curiosity for my surroundings with my practice, endeavouring to produce an image that brings you into the reality of that scene, whilst evoking a feeling of nostalgia and sense of discovery. 17 Norman Row, Kirkstall, West Yorkshire, LS5 3JL, UK info@sarahharrisprints.co.uk 07751 389646 facebook.co.uk/sarahharrisprints @SHarrisPrints

DIANA JORDAN PAINTING, ACRYLIC I find sheep fascinating. Their individual personalities can be quite discernible. I begin my drawings by sketching from life and taking photographs with a digital SLR camera. This allows me to get to know my subjects thoroughly; to observe their mannerisms and behaviour as well as their anatomy. My final drawings look more convincing as a result. The work I am displaying this year is of sheep that roam foothills of the Pennines. They are very hardy breeds - to me they look almost primeval. I have an MA in Fine Art from Falmouth College of Art and I began my art career painting landscapes. I exhibited this work at a number of galleries in London, Wales and the South West. In 1997 I was awarded Third Prize for the Sunday Times / Singer & Friedlander Watercolour Competition and in 1999 I received a Commendation in the Laing Landscape Competition. Since settling in Yorkshire, nearly 10 years ago, I have studied the animals that populate the landscape ...particularly sheep. 5 Royd Moor Hall Farm, Royd Moor Road, Thurlstone, South Yorkshire, S36 7RD, UK amyjonesfineart@gmail.com 07511 519109

FIONA LANCASTER PAINTING, WATERCOLOUR
I’ve been a sculptor since leaving Leeds Polytechnic with a Fine Art degree in 1988. I make my sculptures from a mixture of steel junk and new metal. I use junk metal in my work because i enjoy working with the interesting shapes and like to change them into new objects. I feel compelled to re-use junk metal and give it a new lease of life. It’s like a personal mission not to see anything go to waste. Mixed together with new metal these discarded objects live again as parts of sculptural animals, people, robots, vehicles, in fact anything really.
Fiona originally trained in graphics at Wakefield Art College 30 years ago. This led to a career in graphic design, in which she produced work for numerous businesses and projects in the local area. Throughout this time Fiona continued to work on more creative projects in her spare time using both acrylics and watercolours. Eventually this led to her heading back to school in 2015, attending courses in watercolours at Leeds College of Art. Fiona’s passion for art is only growing and expanding, and today she works with a range of mediums and subjects; from experimenting with inks on abstract pieces, to creating more traditional watercolours.

I have spent the whole of my working life in engineering doing skilled work and graduated with BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Leeds College of Art in 2016. I want my sculpture to have that imperceptible quality resonant in form, space, colour and texture of the work, which radiates in the most subtle way the essence of life experience and to awaken in the observer this feeling of knowing. I have always wanted to create work with meaning a criteria that is almost impossible to achieve, the work must speak out to the viewer, have its own life as Moore said “There must be life bursting out from within.” This is what I want to convey in my work and fundamental to my vision, a visual portrayal of these sentiments, pointers and elements which generate this feeling, this is life experience, the intent in my work is to represent this quality in a three dimensional piece of work, an extremely difficult quality to achieve and rarely successful.

As a former teacher in the Huddersfield area I stared potting when I retired. More recently we moved to North Wales, where I set up my studio. My pots are hand built in in the beautiful Vale of Ffestiniog, where I am inspired by the colours and textures of the mountains, woodlands and valleys. They are made using slabs and extrusions and fired in electric and gas kilns to stoneware temperatures. lies in hand-building using mainly slab and coil techniques. Having grown up on the coast and now surrounded by the beautiful Yorkshire countryside my main sources of inspiration come from nature. I love to go on walks with my family collecting leaves, sticks, bark, shells, seaweed and driftwood. I use these to either press into the clay creating texture or as part of the finished design. Horse hair & raku firing are also a large part of my work, I love the sponteneity and excitment these techniques bring. Maggie Melechi completed her BA (HONS) Fine Art Degree at Leeds Metropolitan University in 1988 specializing in large scale mixed media paintings often incorporating sculptural elements to create colourful and sensuous environments. Recent works continue her exploration of colour, texture and mark making on a variety of scales. Her subject often alludes to the landscape, seascape and aspects of nature i.e. grottoes, volcanic and mountainous terrains, plants and flowers. Her inspiration is drawn from her travels in Southern Italy, Sicily and the contrasting Yorkshire landscape especially the North York Moors She has works in many private and public collections in UK, France, Italy & Lanzarote. maggie@melechi.com 07852 735166

was revitalised in 2016 and found he had become a sculptor. Working predominantly in welded steel his works are crafted using disproportionate force and energy taking materials to the brink of metamorphosis and then harshly pulling them back as you might a part a pit bull from a poodle. The results are brutal and in some cases messy, they might also function, however, as door-stops or window props - in fact any alternative rhyming objects, apart from of course linear accelerator and fecal macerator. Modenbach is a newcomer to sculpture, but no stranger to creativity having enjoyed sparkling moments of c in a career of foreign language translation and obsessive amateur photography - analogue, naturally. I work in both oil and mixed media, working experimentally and playing to the strengths of the different media. I do not seek to portray an accurate representation of a scene but instead to transmit to the viewer, a sense of what it was like to be in that place at that time, feeling the wind and weather and watching the light constantly changing and adding to the drama of the landscape - an essence of the place if you like - that someone may be able to identify with even if they don’t know the place. 8 Helted Way, Almondbury, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, HD5 8XZ, UK caffrin07@gmail.com 07508 806754
KERRY MOSLEY DRAWING, PASTEL
I was educated at Moseley Road Art school in Birmingham from the age of eleven although I knew I wanted to paint from the age of seven. Sadly, the Art school no longer exists although it was an amazing school, council run and part of a long tradition in Birmingham of arts and crafts education. Many of my subjects are landscapes from the Holme Valley, Europe and Africa, places I have been to and enjoyed. I try to find a balance between what I see and what I paint using mainly inks and dyes, which give delicious vibrancy. The intensity of the inks and dyes work better for the feelings and sensations that the subject provokes, more appropriate than a palette of drab greys. My work is on show across the Holme valley in The Butchers Arms, Brambles and Huddersfield Art gallery as well as in private collections in Europe, The U.S. and Australia and several galleries in UK. 142 Woodhead Road, Holmbridge, Holmfirth, W.Yorks, HD92NL, UK dadamoore@btinternet.com 01484 687316 facebook.com/Ross-Moore-Art-332487426768100/

WOODEN TYPE
With nearly 50 years of experience in various printing backgrounds, you could almost say ink is in my blood. It’s certainly been on my hands. Upon retiring from the printing machinery industry, I acquired a large amount of wooden type from a family business established in the 1880s which could no longer afford the space these ‘antiques’ occupied. When letterpress printing died out, tons of wooden type blocks were burned, sent to landfill and even cast into the Thames. While rooting through the pieces I salvaged I’ve encountered hundreds of different typefaces, many with strange and fascinating names: Goudy Old Style, grotesque, Bembo, Baskerville...
THE ARTISTS After cleaning away layers of ink and grime, I uncovered not only the characteristics of the font, but also the exotic hardwoods used. Surfaces like French and Canadian maple, beech, mahogany and stinkwood each reveal their own unique patina as they are polished. 93 Queen’s Drive, Ossett, West Yorkshire, WF5 0NG, West Yorkshire philandgillnewlove@hotmail.com 01924 273145

I am a local sculptor, moulder and caster creating sculptures for the home and garden. I sculpt in either clay or plasterlene and get inspiration from the surrounding flora and fauna. My sculptures are of an illustrative style and I exaggerate parts to create character and give each piece a personality. I have always been interested in the use of movement within sculpture and have created a range of water features that compliment my other work. I currently cast all my pieces in cold cast metal resin achieving different finishes such as a traditional and verdigris bronze, rusted iron, brass and copper. My work is a mix of limited and open edition pieces. I also enjoy working on public art pieces and undertaking commissions. I have a workshop space within the new and exciting home of The Sculpture Lounge Studios at Holmbridge Mill, Bank Lane, Holmbridge, HD9 2NE and I will be exhibiting my work as part of our Fringe exhibition and opening my studio to visitors throughout the week. 68 Miry Lane, Thongsbridge, Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, HD9 7SB, UK martin-norman@talktalk.net 07940 544688 @martinnormansculptures @MartinNormanUK

MARIE RAMSDEN PAINTING, OIL Martin Priestley was born in Otley, West Yorkshire in 1977. His interest in photography began when using his father’s old Praktica SLR camera. A keen cyclist and walker, Martin was drawn towards landscapes, especially the stunning scenery of the Yorkshire Dales. The dramatic light of dawn and dusk feature heavily in Martin’s work, and he strives for strong, graphical compositions, for an atmospheric result. ANTHONY RATCLIFFE
WOODCUT PRINT I have been fascinated in painted wooden objects since I was a small child. Watching my Dad make and paint decoy birds for his hunting escapades kindled a strong desire in me to carve and pursue an interest in wooden objects. Although I was a History teacher for 34 years I have made automata, toys and woodcarvings as a hobby, throughout and beyond that time. Decorated wood is my main concern whether it is a toy, tells a visual story, a sculpture,or moves or doesn’t move. My work is a fusion of many interests and influences, including a passion for wood; a love of the sea; stories and myths and all things natural, particularly fish and birds. I am influenced by Folk Art of all countries; Romanesque and Medieval stone and wood carvings. I have sold work in well established galleries throughout the UK for over 37 years. I have also sold work in Germany and the USA. Long may it continue ! Wood Edge, Baggerwood Road, Thurgoland, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S 35 7AX, UK Susanrevans1@outlook.com 01142 885830

JEWELLERY
Welcome to Visions Of Silver, providing a range of Sterling & Fine Silver Jewellery, created in the Heart of Holmfirth. I am Paul Rothery. My interest in Silver Jewellery began while on holiday on the Isle of Orkney in 2003. I visited some of the smaller silver factories & it was there that my journey commenced. I trained for 3 years in the techniques of of hand crafting silver jewellery, having found an excellent tutor. My ambition was to create unique styles of designs & bespoke pieces, which would exploit the properties of silver & bring out its beauty. I will have a transformed website during 2017, with new & different designs available. Today, I am known in various parts of the country & have sold pieces abroad. It is a great pleasure to have been associated with Artweek & Macmillan now for 11 years, supporting a charity which has become invaluable at times of extreme need for both individuals & families. 8, The Terrace, Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, HD9 3AD, UK rot2150@live.co.uk 07710 880990

I’ve had some success with my paintings in local exhibitions and now want to spread my wings a little further. I prefer to paint the figure or portraits and having tried watercolours and acrylics I now fine that Oil paints suit my style best. JOAN SMITH
Hi. My name is David Small and I am an amateur artist based in Singleton, Lancashire. I would like to add however, that I was born and raised in the Holme Valley. I am a busy father of four and currently work as a primary school teacher in Blackpool. I endeavour to paint in my ‘spare’ time.
I am an Addingham based printmaker working mainly through the medium of reduction lino printing I enjoy the essentially ‘primitive’ character, craft skill and historical continuity bound up in the process of block printmaking; the intellectual and technical exercise of manipulating the original image to exploit the potential of the medium - and its serendipitous nature. By limiting the editions of my work I allow myself time to experiment within the process itself, sometimes on a print by print basis adding to their individual nature. ‘My work, based on my own drawing and photography, attempts to capture and respond to specific instances of location and time. In the momentary coming together of disparate elements and perspectives, I try to create visual narratives that have, in themselves, small significance. They remain, however, essential parts of a reflection of a complete and uniquely personal aesthetic experience’. 21 Bolton Road, Addingham, Nr Ilkley, Yorkshire, LS 29 0NQ, UK smithm303@gmail.com 01943 431216

past four years Nicki has been creating her body of work called “Home sweet home” each year she adds to the collection. Her Fine Art background is visible in her unique way of exploring her field of photography. Nicki’s vibrant photographs lead you along a very fine between humour and tragedy. Her excitement sparks at the possibilities of selecting and combining a variety of techniques that enables her cherished subjects to ‘shine brightly’ in her photographs. Once she starts working she constructs a whole new world for subjects to inhabit, creating surreal mini landscapes which tell her story of the everyday. The titles for Nicki’s photographs are not literal but are integral to her work. DIANA TERRY 34 Kell Butts, Wainstalls, Halifax, West Yorkshire, HX2 7TW, UK paultg4@gmail.com 07981 547245 facebook.com/PaulTalbotGreaves/ @TalbotGreaves Award winning Artist: Dionne Swift is a graduate of Goldsmith’s College, she has a MA in Textiles and has over 27 years of creative practice experience. Now based in Holmfirth, she exhibits and tutors internationally. I am intrigued by the energy in our landscape - It might be a block of colour, a particular structure, a subtle shadow, a sense of place or unspoken energy that pulls my attention. I focus my time observing and drawing from the landscape then exploring stitch and thread qualities as a drawing medium. I sew with energy, speed and vitality, mixing colour on the surface of the cloth - I like to think of it as tactile pointillism : blending thread colours and tones as the stitches entwine. Often I’ll build up multiple layers of thread giving a dense matted surface where the cloth has been smothered and stitches command attention. My aim is to offer energetic and intense contemporary embroidery that challenges traditional parameters. Commissions accepted. I began my career working in the art department of a fashion production studio. After bringing up my son I chose to follow my passion of becoming a contemporary artist, predominately painting land and seascapes in oil. Now painting full-time, I use my visual memory as a point of reference for dramatic seascapes. Inspired by the many childhood visits to the North Wales coast and more recent family trips to the coastal villages of North Yorkshire. My paintings are a combination of distant memories and recent observations, semi-abstract seascapes that always remain recognisable as such. Based on a simple composition of land, sea, and sky, these semi-abstract forms are a response to the atmosphere and drama that the constantly changing elements never fail to provide. I continue to live and work in Yorkshire and my time is divided between a land-based studio near

I am a Sheffield based artist working with sea/ landscape and the human form. I exhibit regularly. My main methods of practice are painting, drawing and making photographic images. I attempt to be instinctive in my work and use marks and lines often incorporating writing, whether legible or not, as part of the act of drawing and painting. Drawing is an essential part of my practice; charcoal an important medium and life drawing a discipline. Much of my painting work starts with the Humber Estuary. The area intrigues me because its complex history, and the mix of raw beauty and industrial activity. I have an interest in the historical connections places have, including personal ones, and how they effect what we see. The sea/landscape provides material for exploring facts and suppositions. “How we look at the landscape determines how we internalise it.” ST 74 Cruise Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S11 7EF, UK steve@thetoddhouse.org.uk 07980 281737 facebook.com/stephen.todd.777 twitter.com/artfulstevie

TEXTILES Valérie is a fibre artist whose main fascination lies within the manipulation of fibres and textiles as an expressive art form. Taking the rural environment as her inspiration, she explores long-term interests of texture, colour, layering and process to create contemplative and ethereal artworks. Her primary technique is wet felting; a traditional craft technique using wool tops, hot water, soapsuds and friction to interlock the fibres together. These are highly textured felt pieces in which cloth is embedded, prints disguised and threads unraveled, as a painter with her brush. The analogy with painting is significant throughout, making the viewing inquisitive, and challenging people’s perception. In 2015, Valérie won Embroidery Magazine’s Best Emerging Textile Artist at SIT Select Showcase, as well as Best Picture in Show at the Great North Art Show. In

Once upon a time I was course leader of the Behavioural Sciences degree at Huddersfield University, lead singer/ songwriter for the Celebrated Utang Tumblers, and author of a book on Gender. In 1996 I bought a round-Asia air ticket and put all that behind me. It was when I came back a year later I was first introduced to the mindblowing potentials of digital imaging technology, and that changed everything. Passion became obsession as it gradually took over my life. I became a full-time artist in 2004. Since then I have held around 30 exhibitions from Dean Clough to Dubai, and completed a wide range of commissions,
THE ARTISTS from Huddersfield Town and Longley Farm to Select Data Facilities and Syngenta. I now tend to specialise in large scale artworks that represent a particular place and the activities that occur within it - a football stadium, theatre, industrial plant, a whole town. It is an intricate and extraordinarily time-consuming process (see “How It’s Done” on aliwhite.com). aliwhite@aliwhite.com 07818 043106 facebook.com/aliwhite.artist
