The aim of the pavilion was to frame the beautiful natural landscapes of a backwater region. The pavilion rests on the water itself, inviting people to not just view the water, but move on to it through the pavilion. The form is a frame through which the view can be composed. The form is distorted to create strong intersecting lines to contrast and emphasise the soft fluidity of the water and the landscape. The lines retain the flowing nature of the water where the floor

transforms to form the stairs, the decks, the roof and the walls, in the process creating different levels of viewing decks. The steps up and the seating are sculpted out from the same form to create a unified pavilion.

The Pavilion stands on the calm backwaters, emphasising through contrast: the heavy concrete forming a light X that seemingly floats on the surface; the sharp lines at odds with the smooth curves of the water that laps at its base; the white block of the concrete from the side as you drive up, almost disappearing into the thin X-form as you approach it head on, inviting you in to view the natural landscape through it, to follow the lines and find your own place.

The kitchen was evolved as a concealed form contained within a living space. The form of the kitchen evolved from a hidden area in the side of the room to two columns within the space, splitting the functions of the kitchen into two parts, the wet and the dry portions. The resulting arrangement creates a movement loop around the columns through the living space, creating pockets and nooks, and also activating the entire space, by not separating the kitchen to another room. Both the columns are covered with a shutter along a rail that completely conceals the kitchen when not in use, but allowing it to expand outwards when needed.

The kitchen is an effort to integrate seemlessly two spaces, a space for living and a space for cooking. The design attempts to create a constantly expanding and contracting space, almost like the breathing rhythm of the entire house. The processes of living in the house are made visible by the constantly shifting space. The columns form a striking presence in the space.

Creating the initial random movement

The idea for the form evolved through questioning and challenging assumptions about the design of shopping malls. The form includes a front of arcade shopping activating the streetscape and drawing people in rather than focussing only inward. The form creates internal open to sky green spaces connecting across the different levels right up to the walking track on the rooftop, bringing in the landscape of the site rather than cutting off the inside and creating an artificial atrium.

The green horizontality of the structure contrasts the dense urban topography surrounding the site. The design attempts to create multilevel green public spaces within the site, to redefine shopping malls, and creating natural vistas within the template of a shopping mall. The random paths used to guide people through the space weave between inside and outside and across levels organically creating a shifting experience.

INTRODUCTION Systems of education through history have largely remained as standardised and similar as the structures they inhabit. The industrial model of standardised learning is still all pervading.There is no doubt that the system works for some, but it cannot be accepted as one-size-fit-all. What we need instead is a system of education that facilitates learning through doing and enabling free choice and mutual sharing in the development of individual and varied passions. We need to rethink the way we structure education as an alternative lifestyle integrating science and art, music and dance, literature and philosophy, work and play; to find a way to make learning satisfying and meaningful.

PROJECT FRAMEWORK The project is a campus for a new university with an interest in reshaping the learning experience. The idea is that such universities bring together a variety of disciplines and courses under one umbrella institution. Bringing together the varied streams of technology, medicine, humanities and management makes it possible to incorporate an interdisciplinary system wherein these varied streams could start to connect and overlap. The aim is to create an architectural framework for an interdisciplinary system that allows people to freely plug in and create possibilities and share them beyond boundaries of rigid segregation of disciplines. An attempt to create an environment for free and easy sharing of ideas, passions, and work. A redefinition of how an institution is conceived. The formation of networks and linkages that may transcend one specific area of scope and application. The creation of possibilities for the system to plug into existing fabrics and for different systems to plug into one another. A system based on -Cross-disciplinary access -Interdisciplinary interaction -Learning - Practice collaboration -Cross-professional interaction -Program overlaps -Learning community formation 23

Administration The admin blocks of all the departments are arranged around the central street in a way that they each define the entries to their departments in an otherwise shared block.

Entry The entry to the institution is into a plaza that separates into the inner and outer streets.

Core Computer Labs The specific computer labs required for the computer science departments are arranged along the first floor street

Classrooms The classrooms are stacked up above the admin blocks of the departments forming a ring overlooking the central street and connected to the inner street on the other side. The classrooms are open visually towards the inner street to facilitate connections.

Studios The studios are arranged in a manner that they connect to the inner street on 2 different levels rising up along the street stretch.


Labs All the labs required for each block are given as one open space. Since the blocks are formed from connected departments, this allows for possible connections across disciplines.

Library The library is the largest unifying program. All the departments need to access this central library

Sports The sports facilities are arranged along the inner streets creating movements through the different blocks.

Central OAT An OAT at the centre acts as focal point for everyone to gather. The library on top and the cafetaria and gallery outside, the top of the OAT connects to the inner streets by a series of skywalks.

The campus functions simultaneously as a single unit and as a collection of

streets, plazas and individual but interlinked units. The inner streets collect the activity and pool them in the central plaza, imagined as a hub within a network of dependencies.

The stadium is conceived as the roots of the city as built form. The city of Chennai evolved along 5 radial lines, which formed the wings of the building. The character and nature of each of these 5 roads is transposed onto the form of the building. The main program of the football stadium is surrounded by a variety of programs that create a new central hub in the city, situated surrounding the field and reaching outwards towards the city.

The idea was to compose the multitude of programs for the site using the 5 wing framework. The distrbution of the usage of these wings across the year also generate activity all over the site all around the year. The wings taper down and meet the ground creating an iconic but unimposing structure, also allowing people to walk up the whole green roof from one end

The installation by Hashtag Collective attempts to reference-dismantle-reassemble iconic structures of Kerala. The upright mirrors follow the floor plan of the Naalu Kettu Kerala house as well as its roof form, the criss cross ropes of the Cheenavela, and the mirror tradition of the Aranmula Kannadis.

The installation mirrors are pivoted centrally and the visitors shape their paths through the installation by rotating the mirrors to create their paths through. This also creates a dynamic visual landscape of reflections. The ropes tie the installation to the gallery within which it sits, an old waterside warehouse converted into an art gallery, symbollically tying the new with the history it inhabits.
