There is in most of us an underlying desire to buy cool stuff. It stem from insecurities, but it is exploited by corporations and advertising. We’re living in world of media where things are magnified and exaggerated to bring us to consume more. Unfortunately, it means that we are always spending more, which means we must either get into debt or work more to earn more. When they really start to think about it, though, most people realize that the physical things they own are not the most important parts of their lives. Excessive consumption promises happiness, but never delivers. Instead it results in a desire for more. It is time to step back and realize that excessive consumption is not giving the promised happiness and fulfillment. Consumption is necessary but anything excessive is never good.

BUY IT TO LAST

be more conscious of impulses when ready to buy something.

pause and breathe to let physical desire wane.

it’s okay to buy things; we still do it, but do it consciously.

Carry Light How much things do you carry around every day? It’s something we don’t often think about, but each item we carry around is a little burden, and little burdens add up. Example of things people carry around: • Wallet, contains money, lots of cards, stamp card, bills • Purse, contains grooming items, makeup, tissue, etc. • Laptop with charger and mouse • Case with files and papers • Cell phone, and another cell phone • Books • Keys • Notebook • Pen(s) • Coffee mug • Snacks and candies The things fill up our general fatigue. Sometimes we have to carry all around because it’s necessary. But it’s nice to walk around without things weighing you down. It’s less of a burden.

1. Reducing needs a. You can switch to lighter wallet and carry just the essentials like some cash, credit card, and ID. There is a lot of slim wallet such as money band and money clip. b. Move cosmetics and grooming to travel size container.

2. Put each item to the test 3. Consider each item whether you use them everyday 4. Check on things we carry just to feel safe and ended up not ever needing them

On Sentimental Items Life events mostly accompanied with things for keepsake. Things like movie tickets, a bracelet from your childhood, your birthday day menu, all tidbits of items we collect. Each of them bring us to our past life, either it’s a good or bad memories.

Of course it was difficult to let go, but I realized quite a few things about our relationship between memories and possessions during the entire experience: 16

1

We are not our stuff We are more than our possessions.

2

Our memories are not under our beds, but within us.

3

Holding on to stuff weighs on us mentally and emotionally. Letting go is freeing.

4

You can take pictures of items you want to remember or scan old photographs.

5

An item that is sentimental for us can be an item that is useful for someone else.
