son during his second season as KHC Professional Huntsman. Though rain and mud caused too many meets to be cancelled, hounds rewarded the Keswick faithful whenever hunting was possible. Paul handles the pack quietly and with apparent ease, which speaks of time spent with them in the kennel and on non-hunting days. Allowing hounds freedom to wander, gathering them when needed, demonstrates superior control. Read more on page 17.

Keswick Resident and Accomplished Floral and Event Designer, Gregory Britt, Opens an Interesting New Venture in the Keswick Environs patrons (of course I bartended!) was an event designer , he offered me part of his studio to do my painting. Soon enough, it was no more cocktail slinging, very little painting and lots of event design. After severl years of free-lancing for all of NYC’s best designers, I opened my own business, Gregory Britt Design. I was fortunate to cultivate some amazing clients and to create parties for them all over the world.

diana. I was also an artist painting and drawing the flowers, foliage, and vegetables that I grew. During college I worked in florist’s shops and for event design companies learning the mechanics of the floral design business that I still use today. Virginia friends guided me to the world famous Inn at Little Washngton where I designed flowers and events for nearly ten years. After many years in the middle of nowhere, I wanted to be around more people, less cows. Charlottesville, Virginia offered so much. A cottage at Old Poorhouse Farm in Keswick became my home. Plenty of room for all my animals, gardens and painting. I grow many of the flowers that I design with, being a proud part of the Floret Farmer-Florist collective. I was a part of a flower and event
design business on the west side of town for several years. I then ventured out on my own again in May of 2018.Initially I was working from the farm using the washroom and barn stalls as my work space, but GBD was growing too fast. I had driven by Blue Bomar’s old mechanic’s garage many times and one day in February I noticed that it was empty. I squealed my tires pulling in and went to talk to Nancy Parsons , owner of Country House Antiques (and now my new neighbor). She told me that it was for rent and gave me the number to call. Shortly thereafter I had a new landlord. I am so excited to be here in Cismont! The shop is perfect for what I do! So many of my clients are on this side of town and I’m meeting new friends and clients everyday. Centennial Celebration of the Dolley Madison Garden Club BY TONY VANDERWARKER
name was misspelled as Dolly but sometime later, club members realized their mistake and corrected the spelling.
In November of 1919, twelve members
of a bridge club met at Cameron Lodge farm in Gordonsville. Ms. Mary Cameron, the farm owner, suggested that the bridge club become a garden club. Other members who had experience with garden clubs in New England and Philadelphia, heartily endorsed the proposal and the Dolley Madison Garden Club was formed. The club was named after Madison’s wife whose flower and vegetable gardens at Montpelier were a testament to her interest and skill in gardening. While the members were all enthusiastic gardeners, they were not adept spellers. In the early years of the club, Dolley’s
Ms. Barclay Taliaferro, who resided at Mt. Sharon, drew a map for the first Garden Week and it was held by the Garden Club of Virginia for the first time in 1927. The website for Historic Garden Week states, “America’s largest open house is Virginia’s oldest volunteer tourism project. Presented by the Garden Club of Virginia, Historic Garden Week encompasses 30 tours organized and hosted by member clubs. For more than 80 years, the nation’s only statewide house and garden tour has contributed to our state and regional economies. The economic impact of Historic Garden Week over the last 45 years is estimated to be over $425 million.” The Dolley Madison Garden Club has continued to host Garden Week with homes and gardens in Orange and Madison. This year the event will be on Saturday,April 27 and features four properties. The brochure for the tour states, “Four gracious homes, with links to the earliest history of this beautiful place, highlight the area’s agricultural
and equestrian roots. One is a Madison family home, now the headmaster’s house at Woodberry Forest, an acclaimed boy’s school. Two are former residences of founding members of the Dolley Madison Garden Club; all are owned by individuals with flair and elegance. With their history, architecture and gardens, all four properties—Gaston Hall, Tivoli, Windholme and The Residence— showcase the guiding principles which inspired the founders of the Dolley Madison Garden Club, beautification, preservation and restoration.” “We are delighted to have such magnificent homes and gardens on this year’s tour,” says Annie Vanderwarker, president of the club. “And we hope people will visit to appreciate the homes and to help fund our mission of restoring historic gardens and landscapes.” Historic gardens at Montpelier, Monticello, the university and many others throughout the commonwealth have been restored over the years with proceeds from Garden Week.While many are aware of Historic Garden Week, some may not realize the contributions participating garden clubs have made to our state. Early on, Dolley Madison initiated the
“Save the Dogwood Campaign” and in 1930 concentrated on saving native Virginia greens like holly and running cedar. Later, members were concentrating on removing billboards and planting trees along the paved roads in Orange County and helped to enact statewide restrictions on outdoor advertising. Over the years, many other projects have been launched by the club to preserve the area’s natural beauty. To celebrate their Centennial, Dolley Madison members have funded and hired Raindrops of Virginia to build a fountain for Taylor Park which one of their members, Helen Marie Taylor, gave to the town of Orange. In an event on , Sen. Tim Kaine,, Rep. Abigail Spanberger, the presidents of Garden Club of America, the Garden Club of Virginia and other dignitaries will join club members in dedicating the fountain.Centennial Celebration in Taylor Park, Town of Orange on May 5, 2019 at 2:00 pm. It will be a fitting tribute to the contributions the Dolley Madison Garden Club has made to our community over the past hundred years.

WHAT'S COOKING Strawberry Shortcake BY SAM JOHNSON, DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF CULLINARY | 1776
I love this recipe. I have played with this one using different extracts and have found
that citrus really highlights the berries, and gives the short cakes a refreshing flavor. Although this is a classic dessert, it is often forgotten. Well let’s not forget about it this spring and summer and add this winner to your menus. Ingredients
• 3 cups all-purpose flour • 1/4 cup granulated sugar • 2 tablespoons baking powder • 1 teaspoon salt • 3/4 cup cold salted butter cut into small pieces • 1 1/3 cups cold heavy cream • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • 1⁄2 teaspoon pure orange extract • 2 egg whites for brushing tops of shortcake • Sanding sugar for sprinkling on shortcakes
Instructions: Step 1
For the whipped cream: • 1 cup heavy whipping cream • 3 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • 1⁄2 teaspoon lemon extract • Pinch of salt
Slice or quarter the strawberries and place them into a large bowl. Cover with granulated sugar and stir. Cover and refrigerate the strawberries while you make the shortcakes so they can get juicy.
Step 2
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with a Silpat baking mat or parchment paper. Set aside.
Step 3
In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, and baking powder. Mix in the salt. Add the small pieces of cold butter and use a pastry blender, fork, or your clean hands to cut the butter into the dry ingredients. Mix until you have pieces that are the size of peas.
Step 4
In a small bowl, stir together the cold heavy cream and vanilla extract, orange extract. Pour the mixture over the flour mixture and stir until just combined. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and lightly knead the dough together to incorporate all of the crumbly dough pieces. Do not overmix.
Step 5
Press the dough into a circle, about 1-inch thick and cut into rounds, using a biscuit cutter. Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, about 2 inches apart. Place the pan in the refrigerator and chill the biscuits for 20 minutes before baking.
Step 6
Use a pastry brush to brush the chilled biscuit tops with egg whites. Sprinkle tops generously with sanding sugar.
Step 7
Bake the biscuits until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Let cool completely. While the biscuits are cooling, make the whipped cream. In the bowl of a stand mixer, whip the heavy cream, sugar, vanilla & lemon extract, and a pinch of salt together until the cream reaches stiff peaks.
Step 8
To assemble the shortcakes, cut the biscuits in half horizontally. Spoon the strawberries over the bottom of the biscuit and add a dollop of whipped cream. Top with the other biscuit half. Add more strawberries and whipped cream on top, if desired. You can also break up the biscuits and top them with strawberries and whipped cream or leave them whole and add strawberries and whipped cream on top.

Keswick hounds hunted well for Paul Wilson during his second season as KHC Professional Huntsman. Though rain and mud caused too many meets to be cancelled, hounds rewarded the Keswick faithful whenever hunting was possible. Paul handles the pack quietly and with apparent ease, which speaks of time spent with them in the kennel and on non-hunting days. Their cheerful demeanor around him shows the affection is mutual.At the meet, they bound out of the trailer, inquisitive and sterns up. Some huntsmen insist on confining their packs into a tight cluster with cracking whips and snarling voices. The Keswick hounds relax and meander until a note from Paul’s horn alerts them the fun is about to begin. Then all hasten to be near him as he is moving off to draw the first covert. Keeping hounds in a tight bunch demonstrates control. Allowing hounds freedom to wander, gathering them when needed, demonstrates superior control. Paul Wilson interferes as little as possible with hounds’ work once they find a fox and settle on a line. Keswick country has woods and mountains where the huntsman cannot be with the pack at all times. Inexperienced huntsmen have difficulty resisting the urge to gather hounds up at a check and carry them forward to a Tallyho, or otherwise help them out whenever possible. This puts hounds in the habit of lifting their heads and relying on huntsman assistance, instead of keeping their noses down and working difficulties out for themselves.Paul’s experience enables him to know when to make exceptions to this rule, as he did on a hunt from Mount Sharon in December. The date was December 26, known as Boxing Day in England, for the wooden boxes, which circulate on that day to collect alms for the poor. On that sunny day, temperatures climbed into the 50s after a morning frost. The owners of one property near the meet had requested that horses keep off their wet ground. Complying with their wishes, Paul drew in the opposite direction.

However, hounds found a mischief making fox, who took a sharp U-turn into forbidden territory. Paul was able to retrieve the pack and hustle them to permissible higher and firmer ground. Hounds spoke on a few old lines, becoming fragmented and strung out. They were not hunting together as a pack, not showing their usual drive and brilliance. Thick briars and undergrowth on the wooded and, in places, recently timbered mountain seemed to add to their difficulties. The thick growth also prevented me and my fellow whippers-in from hastening the hounds dwelling behind. Half the pack marked a fox to ground. Paul took them back to the rest, who were speaking intermittently, making slow progress. Paul viewed their fox near a confluence of trails my brother Sandy and I call Big John’s Crossroads, in honor of beloved Keswick ex- MFH Snookie Wawner’s all time great hunting horse Big John. Area deer hunters call it “the Five Way,” because five trails intersect there. Paul summoned hounds with his horn and voice. I would have liked to swoop in behind the laggards and push them forward, but the more important duty was to hold up the lead hounds, to prevent them from getting ahead of the rest. Paul needed to consolidate his forces. When all had arrived and Paul put them on the line, hounds went away en masse, with good speed and the loudest cry we had heard all day. They ran for miles, circling on the mountain ridge. Paul’s judgment and actions enabled their success. The run was a satisfying conclusion of the day, proof that hounds are best left alone, except when the situation dictates otherwise. Wisdom is knowing when to break the rules. With its excellent pack and huntsman, generous landowners, fabulous renovated clubhouse and kennels, Keswick Hunt Club members can be optimistic about next season. Pray for friendlier weather.

ful historical fiction that reads a bit like a tall tale. The Which Way Tree takes place in Texas there is a demon panther, El Demonio de Dos Dedos, on the loose sometime during the Civil War. This panther has terrorized Benjamin’s family and in the first few pages the reader gets to hear Benjamin’s remarkable voice. Benjamin is testifying to the story of his sister’s hunt for the panther that killed her mother and how that hunt got tangled up with the sorry life of Confederate soldier Clarence Hanlin. I have to admit I fell in love with Benjamin’s voice. We are introduced to him as he relays the beginning of his testimony to the judge in the case. Later he is sent home to continue telling his tale through a series of letters and his perspective is told with such innocence and wonder that the truth of it, despite the tall tale nature of it all, seems incontrovertible. This author has breathed life into an old style of story and it’s so refreshing that I had to recommend it.

In a different part of London Angelica Neal is mourning the loss of her protector who has just died, leaving her at the mercy of her former madam, Mrs. Chappel. Angelica and her maid, Eliza Frost, must figure out a way to keep Angelica living in the manner to which she has grown accustomed. Jonah and Angelica’s paths cross even as Angelica falls under the spell of George, a rather tedious wastrel. This may seem like a trite little romance novel, but it is anything but. The prose draws you in and while the characters aren’t always likeable there is something about them that invests the reader. A magic thread runs throughout this story that balances the sordid nature of Angelica’s life.

Both artists draw from their respect and amazement for the wonders and influences of life in its various manifestations. They portray temporal moments of miracle and ephemerality, and what remains as afterlife. Emily Williams, a glass work artist from Chesapeake, Virginia, whose captivating sculpture has been featured in numerous museum and gallery collections, has long been fascinated with the integration of underwater biology and art forms. Williams intricately sculpts flowing algae and corals in Science Glass to convey a sense of luminosity and movement, offering us the impression of fragility, evolution, and endurance through her ancient subjects, and through the meticulous skill, delicacy and clarity of her surprisingly durable medium. What seems to the eye as fragile is in fact as enduring as her prehistoric subjects' presence on earth, owing to the stabilizing properties of the borosilicate (Pyrex) glass. Elaine Rogers, a Richmond painter and teacher, who has taught art at University of Richmond and at the Virginia Museum Studio School, is inspired by observation and reflection gathered from change, layering progressions of permeable forms that emerge over time as evanescent semblances. Rogers' incandescent encaustic paintings convey time's fluid passages as a discourse on both past and possibility, turning what is natural into the supernatural. Luminous Structures is curated by Chroma's UVA intern, Ara Lee, as part of Chroma’s ongoing mission to provide our interns with resume building, hands-on curatorial experience. Susan DuPont McConnell, of Charlottesville, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 20, 2019, with family at her side. The cause of death was Ovarian Cancer. Susan was born on October 25, 1950 in Wilmington, Delaware. She was the daughter of J. H. Tyler McConnell and Jean Ellen DuPont Shehan, both of whom pre-deceased her. In 1968, she graduated from Foxcroft School in Middleburg, Virginia. Susan continued her education at the University of Virginia Curry School of Education, where she was a member of the first graduating class of women in 1972. A devoted mother and grandmother, Susan is survived by her two daughters, Stephanie Rinehart Keen, her husband, Kevin and Caroline Rinehart Cardais, her husband Zach; and by four grandchildren, Lyndsey Keen, Brandon Keen, Tyler Cardais, and Hayes Cardais; her sister, Marion McConnell Lassen, her husband, Kai; and brother, James H. T. McConnell, Jr. Susan lived a life of service and worked steadfastly to enable others. She was the chairman of the Board of Directors at Foxcroft School, on the original property council for Montpelier where she was instrumental in getting the property available to the public. Susan was a longtime member and vice-chair of the University of Virginia Cancer Center Advisory Board. Her altruistic spirit led her to volunteer at the UVA Infusion Center for over 6 years and she organized an annual appreciation lunch for the staff members at the Cancer Center. Susan was a regular volunteer at the 5:00 o'clock Sunday service dinners at Christ Episcopal Church. Susan was a proud member of the Free Union Homemakers Club. For a quarter of a century, Susan consistently visited Clifden, Ireland where she was regarded as a local. Her love for the country and its people, inspired her to breed her own herd of Connemara ponies at Oakfields Farm in Free Union, Virginia. She served as President of the American Connemara Pony Society, the official recording secretary of the history of ICCPS, and the Chair of the Inspection Committee. Respected for her knowledge and passion for the breed, Susan encouraged members of the ACPS to "always try and do better." She was committed on an international level to the representation of the Connemara pony and was honored with the Michael O'Malley Award in 2018. It is impossible to overstate Susan's importance to the promotion of the Connemara pony, both in the United States and around the world.

Leonard J. La Placa, 95, of Princeton, NJ, died Sunday, March 10, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Jamesburg, NJ, he resided most of his life in Princeton. Leonard was the co-owner along with his late wife, Laurel, of Nassau Interiors, Princeton, for over 60 years. Leonard was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and an energetic member of the Princeton Community. Mr. La Placa’s charming and warm personality touched all that knew him. Son of the late Giuseppe and Mary (LaMar) La Placa, and husband of the late Laurel (Smith) La Placa, he is survived three daughters and three sons-in- law, Laurie and James Holladay, Claudia and Michael George, Trinna and Rachid BenMoussa; a sister, Josephine La Placa; and four grandchildren, Clayton George, Jawed BenMoussa, Noor BenMoussa, James Holladay. The funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the MatherHodge Funeral Home, 40 Vandeventer Avenue, Princeton. Burial followed at the Princeton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Leonard’s memory to his favorite charity: Princeton Nursery School, 78 Leigh Avenue, Princeton, NJ 08542.
