Ann moved to Keswick in 2008 from New York, to be near their kids and (now) four grandchildren. He has been an avid fly fisher for over 35 years, traveling extensively, primarily in pursuit of wily trout. Along with two other anglers, Charlie was a founder of the Anglers Club of Charlottesville, which has about 65 august members. He is a member of the Anglers Club of New York and the Paris Fario Club, and writes regularly for the New York Club’s journal and Classic Angling, a British magazine. Also, he has compiled and published a bibliography of angling books. Suzanne Nash, raised in Lynchburg Virginia, graduated from Wake Forest University and immediately moved to Charlottesville, Virginia to pursue all sorts of things, including working in insurance, marketing and television. The mother of two teenagers is currently the manufacturer of a lingerie and swimsuit design company, the director of education at Grace Episcopal Church and enjoys freelance writing and theatre in her free time. Tony Vanderwarker, raised in New England, spent a couple years at Yale and then served two years in the Peace Corps where he got bitten both by tsetse flies and the writing bug. He went to film school at NYU and made documentaries and a full length film which didn’t sell so he decided to try shorter films and went into advertising. Fifteen years later, he had his own ad agency in Chicago where he did “Be Like Mike” for Gatorade. When his partners bought him out, Tony finally had a chance to write full time. It only took him fifteen more years to finally get a book published. “Who cares?” Tony says, “some writers hit paydirt fast, others take longer. The engineer when asked stressed that the owner is paying for the water improvements and that there will not be as assessment to the home owners on the Estate.

22, the Albemarle County Planning Commission hosted a public hearing over a special-use permit. Keswick Hall wants to expand by adding an additional wing to its inn, with 38 more rooms for guests. It also hopes to expand its spa and fitness center, construct a pool bar, and relocate its restaurant. Some people in the crowd on Tuesday night raised concerns about how the changes could increase traffic. Now, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors will have the final say if it approves the permit. No date has yet been set for that decision to be made.

Appointed Little Keswick School Appoints Assistant Head of School

Jody Berkey, M.Ed.. Berkey came to LKS in 2013 as a teacher, quickly proving herself to be a highly qualified and experienced educator with a strong skill base. In spring 2015 she became the school’s academic coordinator, where she made remarkable contributions to organizational efficiency, anticipating and managing hundreds of details. As the assistant head of school, a newly created position at LKS, Berkey will work closely with headmaster Marc Columbus on all matters of school governance and finance. She transition into the position over the next few months, continuing to serve as academic coordinator through the end of this academic year.“Throughout Jody’s time at LKS, she has proven to be a strong advocate for LKS students through excellent academic programming and development,” Columbus said. “When I first came to LKS, I was excited to have the opportunity to work with kids within a small and intimate, strong, relationship-based program with a 50+ year reputation for providing holistic services,” Berkey said. “I am honored to be the first person stepping into this new role and looking forward to new opportunities for supporting our students, families, and staff.”

Albemarle County’s three swimming beaches this summer. On Saturday, May 26, swimming beaches at Chris Greene, Walnut Creek and Mint Springs open for the three-day holiday weekend. Beaches are open daily from Memorial Day Weekend thru Labor Day Weekend, except when Albemarle County Schools are in session. This year, swimming will be available daily beginning on June 8, 2018.

Albemarle County and invites us to listen and dream back to American life in the early 1700’s… For the 9th time, we ask that you join Grace Church’s Farm Tour Committee and our generous Keswick neighbors as we welcome our many guests to a special day in the country and a peek of what lies “beyond the gates”, those rock walls and those tree lined paths leading to some of Virginia’s most respected historical farms. Farm gates will open, the Church grounds will transform to an earlier era Country Fair featuring local artisans, food vendors, Grace Grill, and foot tapping music, pony rides, an English Country Fair children's area and 4-H livestock presentations and show. Again this year, a wonderful assortment of demonstrations awaits visitors at the featured farms. There will be wildlife presentations, the hounds of Keswick, dressage demonstration, children enjoying different activities with horses, and a fabulous antique show. The origin of Grace Church’s Historic Farm Tour – “beyond the gates” can be traced back to March of 2009. The “great recession” was on us, our Annual Meeting just completed and a small group of parishioners gathered to brainstorm “how might Grace Church generate the needed funding to advance its many Outreach Ministries” without impacting the Church’s general operating budget. Our Outreach needs were at their highest, and Grace was no longer able to serve the less fortunate in its local community.

Not only is it stunning but laden with history, Jefferson and Madison thrived here, Jefferson calling it “America’s Eden”. But like an iceberg, Keswick’s real value lies below the surface , unseen and unnoticed by passers-by. For underneath the beauty and history is the community with its stories, institutions, traditions and devoted residents. Where else could you get a story like when pennypinching Coles discovered he needed a pacemaker, he went to Blue who already had the device and asked, “Do you know where I can get a used one?” As Barclay says, “There are no secrets in Keswick,” and he’s right. Everyone knows everything about everyone. And gossip abounds, not nasty or backbiting but out of delight in people’s foibles and missteps, like the Keswickian who mistook a container of gas for kerosene, doused it on a burn pile, lit it and found himself blown off his feet with his eyebrows singed off. Or Chita who, angered that her deceased husband had run her into debt, said, “When I get up there, he’s going to be in much worse shape than he is now.” Hardly a day goes by without hearing someone say, “Did you hear what happened to BLANK? It’s all good-natured ribbing based on the shared understand-

Then there’s the Hunt Club with its rundown, ramshackle charm and raucous parties shared by all. Pictures of foxhunters hanging caddywampus on the walls, the curtains faded and frayed, the silver trophies tarnished, floorboards worn but no one would dare touch a thing. The interior is as sacred as the Gutenberg bible. A planned renovation was only approved when the members running the redo swore that they wouldn’t change the interior.

Hilltoppings are Keswick’s version of a tailgate where you circulate down the line of picnic tables knoshing on delectables people have brought, drinking their wine and chitchatting, it’s a giant picnic in a sprawling field filled with good friends, the exuberance at being together on a beautiful evening so heady you can cut it with a knife.

How about a tiny community with it’s own newspaper, just as funky as the Hunt Club with grainy pictures of people at community events, news of happenings in Keswick, a couple columns, a jumble of reflections on the unique nature of this place, all carefully and creatively crafted and edited by Colin with Winky as KL’s founder and editor. Talk about institutions—how about the Food Booth at the horse show? Manned by a good-natured grabass group of Keswickians who, despite their recognized incompetence at cooking and serving, manage to come up with some pretty good grub and have a great time doing it. Everyone coming away reeking of smoke and fryer oil. The horse show is an annual tradition opened with the Westminster Dog Show and capped off with Snookie’s Fish Fry. It’s a pageant of color and sound with expensive jumpers leaping over fences and

ing reunion where you meet and greet friends you haven’t seen in a while. “Hey, how are you? How’s it going?” people say as they get out of their cars to go in and get their mail. It’s Keswick’s version of Main Street, people’s paths crisscrossing so they can get an update on their friends’ experiences and catch up on the latest gossip.

And in the middle of all this studied funkiness is a tony resort. Keswick Hall, or as locals call it, “The Hall”. It’s a grand old mansion dating from 1912 that’s been updated to high swanky. It’s as inapropos to Keswick as a log cabin would be to Fifth Avenue. But because Keswick includes all sorts of incongruities, pickup trucks and beaters, Ferraris and Maseratis, rickety shacks and multi-million dollar mansions, The Hall somehow finds its place in Keswick. A couple of adventurous entrepreneurs are starting to turn Keswick from horse country to wine country. One has even jokingly referred to Keswick as “Keswick Valley” as in “Napa Valley”. Vineyards are beginning to swarm over the landscape and more are planned. It’s a gradual but striking change in the character of Keswick and while initially disturbing, people are beginning to take the transition in stride, realizing that farmland can be enhanced with endless rows of grapevines. Besides, who doesn’t like a nice glass of wine?

People here are endlessly kind and generous, helping out the less fortunate, always openly greeting each other, sharing jokes and stories, with wealth, achievements and reputation set aside because everyone shares a common experience— we all live in Keswick. It’s a remarkably unique area. Rich in depth and character, unique with its special personality and unlike any other place in the world. Some don’t take to it and longtime residents will say about a new arrival, “They won’t last,” and usually they’re right. It’s not for everybody, just for those of us who wouldn’t live anywhere else.

The Museum of Hounds & Hunting North

America hosted an exhibition and sale of works by select members of the American Academy of Equine Art, opening in conjunction with the Virginia Foxhound Show. “The Year of the Hound” includes oils, watercolors, sketches, and sculptures capturing all of Virginia’s 25 packs during last season, by artists Christine M. Cancelli, Kathleen S. Friedenberg, Morgen Kilborn, Booth Malone, Joanne Mehl, Sally Moren, Rev. Michael R. Tang, Linda L. Volrath, and Larry Wheeler. A highlight of the weekend was a Foxhunting Art Exhibit, featuring images of Virginia hunt clubs by select member artists of the American Academy of Equine Art. On Sunday, May 27, the exhibition and sale was open to the general public during the hound show. Visitors may continue to view the works Saturdays and Sundays through June 26, 2018. Linda Volrath created several oil on linen pieces.

“My biggest challenge with painting sporting subjects is narrowing down which idea to paint. With every kennel visit, or even just one day out following a hunt, I come away with inspiration for more paintings than I can ever create.”

She also reflected on the cooperation required between artists and subjects through the fall and winter: “Every painting I’m including in this show was created within this past year and is the result of visits planned and coordinated with hunt staff, members, and masters who generously shared their time and knowledge.””My paintings would not exist without investing time to observe and study the sport, which in turn allows for scenes to unfold naturally. While I have no control over where the subjects will be or move to, I feel somewhat like a set designer, always aware of the setting, backdrop, surroundings, mood and angle of the light,” she added.

Tenor Solo is one such example of hounds interacting. Equally inspiring is the power of the horses and their willingness to work in partnership with people.”

Fellow American Academy of Equine Art member, Sally Moren, observes that “Painting a hunt is, for me, an immersion in the entire feeling of the day - the chill, the smell of leaves, wind, being keenly attuned - all of us, horse, hound, human - to the land and the sport that we’ve about to give ourselves to..Regarding specific choices for this show, Moren said, “The Middlebrook pack was the tightest-knit, most soulful pack of hounds I believe I’ve ever met. When they turned and faced me coming out of their kennel gate, I felt the weight of nineteen deep stares. They are a band of best friends and athletes, and they know it.”

The purpose of the Museum of Hounds & Hunting North America, Inc. is to preserve the rich North American heritage of hunting with hounds, for today and for the future; acquire important artifacts before they are lost; provide a repository for precious objects; and, by developing educational exhibits through research projects, present hunting with hounds through the sport’s historical, sociological and cultural heritage.

WHAT'S COOKING Cranberry Bourbon Bites

BY SAM JOHNSON, DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF CULLINARY | 1776 Ingredients:

• 1 container of canned biscuits cut into bite size pieces placed in a bowl • ½ Cup of Granulated Sugar • 2 Teaspoon of Cinnamon • 1 Teaspoon of Nutmeg • 1 Cup of dried cranberries • 1 ½ Teaspoon of Orange Zest • 2 Cups of brown sugar • 3 Sticks of butter (preferably salted) • 1 Cup of bourbon • 1 Tablespoon of vanilla • 3 Tablespoons of lemon Juice

Step 1

Begin by cutting biscuits and placing them into a bowl. Then pour sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, orange zest, and dried cranberries over the biscuit bites.

Cranberry Bourbon Bites, golden color and a delicious treat! This recipe is fun and can be used as a breakfast item or a great dessert served with vanilla ice cream. I’m pretty sure this will become a Keswick favorite, it’s certainly one of mine!

Step 2

Proceed by tossing all the ingredients together, making sure the biscuit bites are well coated. Once coated place bites into greased ramekins.

Step 3

over bites in ramekins and bake on 350 for 15 min. Once removed from the oven, please allow 5 min to cool and serve.

Changing Fashion for Changing Times” Featuring costumes and accessories from the hit PBS series at the Virginia Historical Society

he Virginia Historical Society is pleased to announce that Altria Group has agreed to sponsor the VHS’s newest exhibit, “Dressing Downton: Changing Fashion for Changing Times.”

The nationally touring exhibit will run from October 2015 through January 2016 and will be shown in the VHS’s newly created changing exhibition space, one of the project goals of its $38-million “Story of Virginia Campaign.” The exhibition consists of 35 costumes and accessories from the popular PBS MASTERPIECE Classic program. Visitors will be able to explore the lives of Downton’s aristocratic inhabitants and their servants during the World War I period.

I loved The English Wife by Lauren Willig because of its twists and turns as it leads the reader through the old monied world of New York during the Gilded Age. Bayard Van Duyvil is from old family money and when he brings home the lovely Annabelle after marrying her in England their life seems perfect, but then Bayard winds up dead and Annabelle disappears, and no one knows if she has been murdered or is the murderer.

Edinburgh Twilight by Carole Lawrence is a period mystery set in Scotland. A body of a man has been found in Holyrood park and inspector Ian Hamilton is the one who must figure things out before the body count starts to rise.

appealed to me because when I was in college we often took weekend trips to Ashville and I always enjoyed visiting Biltmore. This is the story of this beautiful home which really is an American castle. The Biltmore is the nation’s largest home and its history is one tied to the family that build it and the area in which it came to be. The author of The Girls of Atomic City, Kiernan does a wonderful job opening up the history of Ashville North Carolina and how the Vanderbilt’s changed it with their magnificent home and money.

Losing Mum and Pup: A Memoir by Christopher Buckley is a funny irrev-

erent look at losing both of your parents and what happens when your parents are the very famous Buckleys. I thought it was sad, funny and poignant and also took me back to a different age. I loved every minute of it.

Intrigue and lies are needed to keep from being swallowed up in the injustice of the times. Taking place during the same time period, White Rose, Black Forest is based around the heroes of World War II. When Franka goes into the woods to try and commit suicide she stumbles upon and wounded man dressed in German military garb. Writer Eoin Dempsey introduces us to a young woman struggling to face the repercussions of being part of the White Rose… an organization that spoke up against the Nazis. Franka has to make a decision about whether to believe this stranger and risk her safety or turn him in to the authorities. John, the stranger, has to decide which side Franka is really on, and whether he can trust her with his life.

If you want your heart to beat a little faster, then you might open up a thriller this summer. The Girl Before by J.P. Delaney will

keep you turning pages as you get absorbed into this psychological drama. There was a girl before, living at One Folgate Street, before Jane came. And this girl went through a trauma, just as Jane has gone through trauma, and she was chosen, just as Jane was chosen...out of all of the other candidates to live at this award winning minimalist house. And she fell for the architect just as Jane has. And she died…. The question is…is Jane next? Staying in the same theme of houses Broken Harbor by Tana French takes place in an Irish Coastal town where a luxury development has gone to ruin. In this abandoned remote seaside area, a family has been attacked and Mick Scorcher Kennedy and his partner Richie Curran have to find the killer. The Irish are drawn to the sea and in summer they flock to caravan parks that are scattered along the coastline…and one summer Mick’s mom killed herself in this very same

OBITUARY Dr. Milton Thomas Edgerton,

pioneering plastic surgeon, loving husband, and father of four died peacefully on Thursday May 17, 2018, in Charlottesville, Virginia, after a three-year struggle with multiple myeloma and malignant melanoma. He was 96 years old. Milt was born July 14, 1921, in Atlanta, Ga., to Elizabeth Roddick and Dr. Milton Thomas Edgerton Sr. After graduating from Emory University in 1941 (B.A. Chemistry), he obtained an M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1944. Following a surgical internship at Barnes Hospital, Milt joined the U.S. Army and served at Valley Forge General Hospital for three years. His experience treating war wounds during World War II was formative for him, as this small band of young plastic surgeons performed over 15,000 operations on these horribly injured G.I.'s., without a fatality! Many new reconstructive procedures were invented and perfected. Milt returned to Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1945-1951 to complete his surgical training. He joined the faculty in 1951, directing the Plastic Surgery division. He then became Hopkins' youngest tenured professor in 1962. In 1970, he was recruited to the University of Virginia to found the Department of Plastic Surgery, where he continued to practice until his retirement in 1994. On June 30, 1945, he married Patricia Jane Jones. They met at Johns Hopkins Hospital where he was studying medicine and she was working in a biochemistry lab. They were together for 64 exciting and devoted years until her death in 2010. They traveled extensively but found time to relax and recharge with family in Lake Placid, New York, each summer. Milt was a dedicated teacher of plastic surgery and remained a full-time academic surgeon for his entire career. He trained 76 plastic surgeons who expanded his legacy throughout the country and many became academic chairmen in other medical schools. He was comfortable operating on any area of the body and trained his apprentices to master: head and neck cancer reconstruction, facial palsy reconstruction, burn reconstruction, hand surgery, microsurgery, breast reconstruction, transgender surgery, cleft lip and palate surgery, ear reconstruction, craniofacial surgery, and cosmetic surgery. He also studied the psychiatric benefits of plastic surgery. Milt was a master of all types of plastic surgery and a notable pioneer in several. He advanced the field both through research and the design of new surgical procedures. He was known for his compassion for his patients and was beloved by them. During his career he authored over 500 peer-reviewed medical papers and four medical textbooks. He served

as President of the prestigious American Association of Plastic Surgeons and received numerous awards for clinical excellence and teaching. Outside of the operating room, Milt's life-long passion was golf, and he sported a singledigit handicap for many years. He was an excellent skier and tennis player and a crackerjack duplicate bridge partner up until the very end. He always had a welcoming smile for a visitor, and over dinner he loved to discuss, at length, science, politics, and the human condition. His volunteer activities included service at Vellore CMC Leprosy Hospital in India in 1962, consultant at Walter Reed Hospital, Miller Center Governing Council, and the Jefferson Area Board of Aging. A loyal, family man, he is survived by his four children, Dr. Bradford Wheatly Edgerton (Louise Dungan), William Alton Edgerton (Liza Todd), Sandy Edgerton Bissell (Chip) and Diane Edgerton Miller (Ethan); 11 grandchildren, Todd Edgerton (Tracy), Sage Bissell Ruttan (Stu), Leigh Edgerton, Ford Edgerton (Katie), Zachary Miller (Sara), Catherine Kelleher, Robert Kelleher, Lauren Edgerton, Madeline Miller (Evan), Whit Bissell (Lindsey), Stephanie Miller; nine greatgrandchildren, Potter Edgerton, Emory Miller, Sanders Miller, Eloise Ruttan, Truitt Miller, Madison Bissell, Annie Bissell, Kinley Bissell, Georgia Ruttan; and Helen Maupin, his devoted friend; as well as his beloved pup, "Wizard." A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at Farmington Country Club, 1625 Country Club Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22901. Raymond G. "Raymie" Woolfe, Jr., of Troy, Va., died on Thursday, May 10, 2018, in Charlottesville. Born in New York, N.Y., on July 31, 1935, he was the son of Raymond G. Woolfe, Sr., and Ruth Ferguson Woolfe. While in high school in Camden, S.C., Raymie made racing history at Saratoga Springs, N.Y., when he became the youngest jockey at the time to win a stake at a New York track. Only sixteen, he won the Saratoga Steeplechase on Hampton Roads, trained by his dad and owned by Marion duPont Scott. N.Y. sportswriters wrote of famed jockey Eddie Arcaro carrying "the kid's" saddle from the winner's circle.

Raymie attended the University of Virginia and was a member of the polo team, before joining the U.S. Marines. After leaving the Corps as a Sergeant, he graduated from the University of South Caro-

lina School of Journalism and became a photojournalist. After an apprenticeship with famed New York fashion and Kennedy family photographer, Mark Shaw, Raymie shot advertising, fashion, society, and celebrity print layouts. In 1968, he covered the Chicago Democratic convention and ensuing riots. Before long, his love of thoroughbred racing drew him back to a job at the Daily Racing Form. During his time with the DRF, he wrote the acclaimed Secretariat, a book many consider the definitive work on the great 1973 Triple Crown winner. He also wrote the well-received Steeplechasing, published in 1981. In 2016, his highly praised Doomed Horse Soldiers of Bataan The Incredible Stand of the 26th Cavalry was published, with a moving foreword by the late Col. Edwin P. Ramsey, of the 26th Cavalry.

After stints at several leading Thoroughbred farms in Kentucky, Bill opened Graves Stable, primarily for training and selling 2-year-olds in training. Bill and his late wife Michele, were always among the leading consignors at FasigTipton's premier juvenile sale at Calder Race Course in Florida.

Mr. French grew up in Hewlett, N.Y., attended the Pomfret School and Yale University. After graduating, he was an officer in the Navy during World War II. He was devoted to his family, an avid sportsman and an adored friend to many. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be sent to Pomfret School, Pomfret, Conn. or to the ASPCA. Interment will be private.

Through a lifetime of achievements, Bill was unquestionably proudest of the accomplishments of his son Brian as a horseman, and, with his wife Lesley, as the parents of Bill's three treasured grandchildren, Will, Catherine and Carson.
