Ensemble Phoenix, Basel in Cambridge Monday 25 March

press notice

The Swiss group Ensemble Phoenix is a distinguished ensemble of world-class players who focus on new music. As an ensemble they are constantly on the move, exploring new horizons and supporting new talent. Richard Causton, new Lecturer in Composition at the Faculty of Music, University of Cambridge, has worked with Kettle’s Yard to bring them to Cambridge. He says “Ensemble Phoenix are an incredibly versatile and wide-ranging group who promise a highly charged and at times moving evening’s music making. Each of the works in this concert has its own finely drawn and vivid soundworld, coloured by a large array of percussion. It is a very exciting and rare event for a European ensemble of this calibre to perform in Cambridge”. The programme opens with the music of Swiss composer Hanspeter Kyburz. His piece Danse Aveugle (Blind Dance) has been widely performed throughout Europe. Furrer-Münch was a Swiss cartographer who came to composition later in life and whose distinctive and highly personal style concentrates on the quality of sound produced. Fonds, Schach and Basar is a new piece by Austrian Alexander Moosbrugger, presented here in its second ever performance. The concert finishes with Wayang by British composer Gwyn Pritchard. The piece takes its title from the stories told by Indonesian shadow puppeteers.
