Stephen Montague returns for a second year as New Music Associate at Kettle’s Yard, following a hugely successful 2011 series. He has programmed six Sunday Coffee concerts and two evening events packed full of world premieres and new commissions by some of the most talented composers of our time. The Series opens on 29 January with four tubas (YouTuba) who meet in the woods for a ‘Tuba Bears’ Picnic’. A spectacular and musicially diverse show with text by BBC Radio 3 presenter and poet, Ian McMillan. Next up is Irish duo, violinist Darragh Morgan accompanied by pianist Mary Dullea. They will dance with Finnissy and Nancarrow. On 27 February, we are delighted to host Flam by Orlando Gough. This is a truly irresistible work performed by virtuoso singers/actors Melanie Pappenheim and Rebecca Askew. A funfilled, moving work over a simple cup of coffee… Four percussionists, Ensemble Bash perform three world premieres from the Efthymiou Twins and Gabriel Prokoviev – yes, that’s Sergei’s grandson! They are said to ‘make playing percussion the coolest, noisiest and funniest occupation on earth’ (The Times).

Taking the music scene by storm, the young Chinese American pianist Jessica Zhu performs a programme of ‘Powerful Women’ on 11 March. Zhu explores music written by the most talented female composers of today, just in time for International Women’s Day (8 March). Quirly cello and percussion duo The G Project play the first evening concert on 8 March They break the boundaries of classical stereotypes and perform works by Turnage, Cage, Ford and Poppy. On 24 April the stylish Smith Quartet perform the second evening concert. They present an electric programme including George Crumb’s much talked about ‘Black Angels’. Hold on to your seats… our final concert on 20 May welcomes fantastic John Paul Jones composer/performer ‘In Conversation’. Led Zeppelin’s bass guitarist and keyboard player talks to Stephen Montague in an exclusive interview/concert. The series is set to end with a bang with the Cambridge University New Music Ensemble performing his original works.
