BIRDBLIND THE PROJECT IS TO BUILD A BIRDBLIND IN AN EXISTING JOGGING PATH ON THE EAST SIDE OF CENTRAL PATH. AN EXISTING MEMORIAL WOULD BE REMOVED AND OUR DESIGN WOULD REPLACE IT. THE OBJECTIVE WAS TO DESIGN A STRUCTURE TO OBSERVE THE RESERVOIR WITHOUT DISTURBING THE EXISTING NATURE. THE VIEW OF THE CITY FROM THIS SIDE OF THE PARK WAS ANOTHER VIEW WE HAD TO OFFER IN THE DESIGN. OUR DESIGN WAS RESTRICTED BY NOT DISTURBING THE JOGGIN PATH. MY FINAL DESIGN WENT BELOW THE JOGGERS PATH INTO THE RESERVOIR.

GLUCKSMAN GALLERY DESIGNED BY O’DONNELL AND TUOMEY IN CORK, IRELAND. PRECEDENT: THIS GALLERY IS LOCATED AT THE ENTRANCE OF UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CORK. THIS IS AN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE THAT PROMOTES THE RESEARCH, CREATION AND DISPLAY OF VISUAL ARTS. THE TASK IN STUDIO WAS TO REPLICATE DRAWINGS AND BUILD A MODEL OF THE GALLERY TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE ORGANIZATION OF THE DESIGN AND THE ARCHITECTS WORK.
MODEL
THE MAKING OF THE MODEL HELPED ME UNDERSTAND WHY THE ARCHITECTS DESIGNED IT IN THE PARTICULAR MANNER. FOR EXAMPLE THE MANNER IN WHICH THE WALKWAY UP IS DESIGNED, IT MAKES THE GALLERY SPACE ABOVE SEEM SO MASSIVE. THE GALLERY AREA HAS WINDOWS ANGLED IN CERTAIN DIRECTIONS TO PRESENT A VIEW THAT THE ARCHITECTS WANTED THE PEOPLE TO SEE. THE WOOD EXTERIOR IS INTRIGUING BECAUSE OF THE WAY IT BENDS. THE MAIN SPACE, THE GALLERY, IS DOUBLE HEIGHT AND WELL LIT.

GRANTS TOMB OBJECTIVE: DESIGN A VISITOR CENTER AND AN ARCHIVE ADJACENT TO GRANTS TOMB. ITS LOCATED ALONG RIVERSIDE DRIVE ON THE UPPER WEST SIDE OF MANHATTAN. THE INTENT IS TO BRING RENEWED INTEREST TO THE TOMB AND TO ULYSSES S. GRANT. MY DESIGN: GREW FROM THE IDEA OF A DROP OF WATER FALLING INTO A POND. THE RIPPLE EFFECT IS WHERE I DERIVED MY DESIGNS FORM. I INCORPORATED THE PROGRAM AND DESIGNED THE NEW VISITOR CENTER AND ARCHIVE TO BRING PEOPLE TO GRANTS TOMB.
GRANTS TOMB BELOW GROUND
STUDY MODELS: THE FIRST APROACH AS YOU CAN SEE HAD A CIRCLE IN WHICH I BEGAN TO USE THE RIPPLE EFFECT. THE DESIGN SEEMS TO NOT BE PART OF THE SITE AND TOO STRANGE. NEXT APPROACH: I DESIGNED THE RIPPLE EFFECT WHERE THE CENTER OF THE RIPPLE BEGAN RIGHT INFRONT OF GRANTS TOMB. THE DESIGN MOVED BELOW GRADE LEVEL AND EXTENDED TO THE END OF THE SITE. PROBLEM: I ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM WITH MY INITIAL DESIGN BECAUSE I LIMITED MYSELF TO THE PAVED PART OF THE SITE. THAT SHAPED MY DESIGN BY NOT LETTING IT EXTEND TO THE POTENTIAL IT HAD.
THE RIPPLE CONCEPT IS SEEN ABOVE. THE RIPPLE BEGINS BETWEEN MY DESIGN AND GRANT’S TOMB. ROOF PLAN

DESIGN II YALE BRITISH ART CENTER DESIGNED BY LOUIS I. KAHN LOCATED IN NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT. PRECEDENT: IT IS AN ART MUSEUM OF BRITISH ART DONATED FROM PAUL MELLON. LOUIS I. KAHN WANTED TO ALLOW LIGHT AND CIRCULATION TO WORK WELL WITH THE PRECIOUS ART THAT WAS TO BE EXHIBITED INSIDE. HE DESCRIBED THE EXTERIOR TO BE LIKE A BUTTERFLY WHEN SUNNY AND LIKE A MOTH WHEN GLOOMY BECAUSE OF THE COLOR CHANGE OF THE BUILDING. THE PANELS ON THE EXTERIOR REACTED TO LIGHT IN A BEAUTIFUL WAY.

THE TWO LIGHT COURTS ARE IMPORTANT TO THE DESIGN OF THIS MUSEUM BECAUSE IT WAS THE ONLY AREAS WHERE NATURAL LIGHT CAME IN SO STRONGLY. BESIDES THE WINDOWS THAT LATER HAD SCREENS INSTALLED TO CONTROL THE LIGHT ENTRANCE, THESE TWO LIGHT COURTS ALLOWED NATURAL LIGHT TO ENTER. THESE WERE THE MOST PUBLIC AREAS.

GRAND CANAL, VENICE, ITALY THE OBJECTIVE IS TO DESIGN A NEW FACADE THAT REPRESENTS THE MORE MODERN AND UPCOMING CITY. DESIGN THE NEW FACE OF THE CA D’ORO. MY DESIGN CREATED AN INTERESTING AND NATURAL LOOK TO THE CITY. THE CHOICE TO USE WOOD CAME ABOUT BECAUSE WOOD WAS USED FOR THE FOUNDATION OF THESE STRUCTURES ON THE WATER. THE WOOD FOUNDATIONS WERE STABLE ENOUGH TO WITHHOLD THE LOAD OF THE BUILDINGS. THE LAYERED FACADE REPRESENTS THE RISING OF A NEW CITY THAT HAS MUCH TO OFFER.

FASHION HEADQUARTERS THIS PROJECT WAS TO CHOOSE A CUTTING EDGE FASHION DESIGNER AND DESIGN A FASHION HEADQUARTER WHERE THE CLOTHING LINE COULD BE DESIGNED, MADE, DISPLAYED AND SOLD. MY DESIGN WOULD HOLD THE WORK OF REI KAWAKUBO WHO’S FASHION LINE IS COMME DES GARCONS. I LOVE HER FASHION LINE BECAUSE OF THE FORMAL BUT RADICAL CLOTHING. THE DESIGN I CAME UP FOR HER DID WHAT HER CLOTHES DOES ON THE RUNWAY. THE FACADE EXPOSES BUT HIDES A LOT OF WHAT IS UNDERNEATH. THE FACADE FORCES THE ONLOOKER AND GUESTS TO SEE ONLY WHAT IS EXPOSED.
THE HEART IS THE SYMBOL FOR HER CLOTHING LINE CALLED “PLAY”. I FOCUSED ON THE SYMBOL BECAUSE MY DESIGN HAS AN ATRIUM THAT I CONSIDER THE HEART OF MY BUILDING.
COMME des GARCONS
SITE VISIT THE SITE IS LOCATED IN THE LOWER WEST SIDE OF MANHATTAN ON THE CORNER OF LITTLE WEST 12TH STREET AND WASHINGTON STREET. THE SITES DIMENSIONS IS 100’ X 25’. WE GOT TO THE SITE BY WALKING DOWN THE HIGHLINE PARK. THE DESIGN WE HAD TO COME UP WITH WAS IMPORTANT FROM ALL VIEWS AS THE PASSERBYS WOULD ALSO SEE OUR DESIGN FROM ON AND ABOVE THE HIGHLINE PARK AND THE STANDARD HOTEL. OUR DESIGN HAD TO BE CONSIDERATE OF THE SURROUNDING ARCHITECTURE. THE AREA HAD AN INDUSTRIAL FEEL TO IT AS WELL AS UPCOMING NEW BUSINESSES.
STUDY MODELS & SKETCHES CHARCOAL SKETCH STARTS TO EXPOSE AND HIDE THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING. THE RECTANGLE OUTLINED IS THE ATRIUM THAT WOULD BE THE HEART OF MY DESIGN. I WANT THE DESIGN FLOORS TO BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE VERBALLY BUT ALSO VISUALLY. THAT SPACE INBETWEEN IS THE HEART OF THE FASHION LINE.

WHEN DESIGNING THE FASHION HEADQUARTERS, I WANTED TO MAKE MORE FLOOR SPACE FOR THE FASHION DESIGNERS SO I SHIFTED ALL THE FLOORS ON THE RIGHT SIDE DOWN AS YOU CAN SEE TO THE LEFT. THIS GAVE THE THE DESIGNERS ONE MORE FLOOR, MAKING THE THIRD FLOOR SPLIT ON THE RIGHT SIDE. MY IDEA IN THE ATRIUM IS THAT, BEING THE HEART OF THIS BUILDING, THE DESIGNERS WORK WILL SOON BE ON THE RETAIL FLOORS. SO CONCEPTUALLY SPEAKING, THEIR WORK BLEEDS DOWN INTO THE LOWER FLOORS. IN A SENSE LIKE A HEART, PUMPING FASHION OUT INTO THE PUBLIC.

NEW YORK MUSIC ACADEMY THE INSTITUTION I WAS ASKED TO DESIGN IS TO BE A SCHOOL, CONSERVATORY AND PERFORMANCE VENUE LOCATED IN RED HOOK, BROOKLYN. THE SCHOOL OFFERS SEVERAL DEGREES IN MUSIC. TWO RECITAL HALLS NEED TO BE DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS TO PERFORM AS WELL AS OUTSIDE MUSICIANS. MY DESIGN SEPERATED THE SCHOOL FROM THE RECITAL HALLS WHERE THE MUSICIANS WOULD PERFORM. THE SPACE BETWEEN BOTH STRUCTURES HAS CONNECTIONS THAT ARE BRIDGES ALLOWING SPECIFIC AREAS OF ENTRANCE FROM THE EITHER SIDE.
SITE VISIT DURING THE SITE VISIT I COULDNT HELP BUT NOTICE THE LACK OF VEGETATION IN THE AREA. THE PHOTOS TO THE RIGHT ARE THE FEW PHOTOS I HAVE OF FLOWERS AND LEAFS. THE AREA IS DOMINANTLY INDUSTRIAL.
SITE ANALYSIS GREEN SPACES PARKING LOTS VACANT LOTS EXISTING BUILDINGS REACTION TO SITE OUR SITE, LABELED AS THE BLACK RECTANGLE, IS SURROUNDED BY A LOT OF VACANT LOTS AND PARKING LOTS. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THERE IS TOO MUCH UNUSED SPACE IN THE AREA REVOLVING OUR SITE. THE MUSIC ACADEMY WOULD HAVE TO ATTRACT THE PUBLIC AND STUDENTS TO ATTEND THE OPEN SPACE SITE ANALYSIS SCHOOL AND PERFORMANCE HALLS. SITE INFO: THE SITE SPANS BETWEEN BEARD STREET AND REED STREET. THE LACK OF GREEN SPACES IS TO THE ADDRESS IS 448 VAN BRUNT STREET. THE DIMENSIONS: 90’ X 200’Print Send OUR DISADVANTAGE. TRANSPORTATION ONE OF THE PROBLEMS ABOUT THE LOCATION OF OUR SITE IS THE LACK OF TRANSPORTATION THAT IS AVAILABLE NEAR THE SITE. BESIDES A BUS THAT STOPS 2 BLOCKS FROM OUR SITE, NO TRAIN IS CLOSE ENOUGH TO BE CONSIDERED CONVENIENT. MANY STUDENTS COULD COME BY BIKE. MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION WOULD CONSIST OF BIKE, BUS OR SOME OTHER VEHICLE

THE MINOR HALL SITS BELOW THE MAIN HALL. THE DECISION TO HAVE BOTH HALLS ON THE SAME SIDE RESULTED ON USING THE FLOOR OF ONE HALL AS THE CEILING OF ANOTHER. AS YOU CAN SEE ON THE PROGRAM LAYOUT TO THE LEFT, THE MAIN HALL AND THE MINOR HALL IS A BIG PART OF THE DESIGN. THE GATHERING SPACE ABOVE THEM IS TO ENJOY THE VIEW OF THE WATERSIDE IN RED HOOK, BROOKLYN. A GREEN ROOF HELPS PREVENT RUNOFF AND ADDS GREEN SPACE THAT RED HOOK LACKS.

DESIGN IV 241 & 245 WEST 113TH STREET INTERIOR BLOCK INFILL ARCHITECT: GEORGE PELHAM UPPER WEST SIDE MANHATTAN, NY PRECEDENT ANALYSIS: THIS PRECEDENT SHOWED ME THE TYPE OF FLAG PLAN DESIGN THAT WAS USED IN THE EARLY 1900’s. FLAG PLAN WAS A POPULAR STYLE TO USE IN BUILDINGS. BACK THEN THERE WAS VERY LITTLE ELECTRICITY SO MANY WINDOWS WERE NEEDED FOR NATURAL LIGHT. THE HALLWAYS WERE VERY SMALL IN ORDER TO MAKE THE ROOMS BIGGER. THE FACADE WAS NOT FANCY BUT IT STILL HAS SOME DECOR AND DESIGN ON IT. BRICK WAS A VERY POPULAR CHOICE TO USE ON BUILDING FACADES.

A NEIGHBORHOOD 6 UNIT DWELLING THE ASSIGNMENT WAS TO DESIGN A DISTINCTIVE DWELLING FOR ALL 3 DISTINCT DEMOGRAPHICS IN THE AREA. THOSE 3 DEMOGRAPHICS CONSIST OF SENIOR CITIZENS, COLLEGE STUDENTS OR GRADS AND LOW INCOME FAMILIES. MY DESIGN CREATED A COMMUNITY FOR ALL 3 TYPES OF DWELLINGS. THE FACADE WOULD ACT AS A WAY FOR EACH RESIDENT TO BE ABLE TO TAKE PART IN “DESIGNING” THE FACADE. THERE ARE OPERABLE DOORS ON THE FACADE THAT EACH RESIDENT CAN CHANGE AT ANY TIME TO THEIR LIKING. THE FACADE WOULD ALLOW MORE OR LESS LIGHT AND VENTILATION BASED ON HOW THE RESIDENT FELT.

IMPROVE HEATING SYSTEM IN APARTMENT BUILDINGS
THE NAKED CITY SITE ANALYSIS THE MOVIE MADE IN 1948 CALLED THE NAKED CITY TOOK PLACE ON AND AROUND OUR SITE. MY STUDIO USED THAT MOVIE TO STUDY THE SITE AND THE IMAGE TO THE LEFT IS A SCENE I USED TO ANALYZE. THAT PARTICULAR SCENE SHOWS THE MANS APARTMENT IN WHICH THE OPENINGS ON THE EXTERIOR ARE BIG TO ALLOW PLENTY OF NATURAL LIGHT IN. THE HEATING SYSTEM WAS ANOTHER FACTOR I EXAMINED BECAUSE IT WOULD HEAT UP THE APARTMENT PRETTY WELL. THE DRAWING SHOWS HOW APARTMENTS WERE TO CLOSE TO EACHOTHER. PRIVACY WAS NOT A LUXARY IN THE APARTMENTS. THIS UNIQUE ANALYSIS HELPED ME TO THINK ABOUT THE BENEFITS THE APARTMENTS HAD THAT COULD STILL BE USED IN THIS DAY.

THIS IS A HIGH DENSITY, LOW RISE COLLECTIVE DWELLING. THE DEMOGRAPHICS HOLD SENIORS, COLLEGE STUDENTS AND LOW INCOME FAMILIES. THE SITE IS 100’X200’ WHICH SHOULD HOLD A MIXED-USE HOUSING PROJECT. 40 UNITS SHALL OCCUPY THE SITE. OUTDOOR SPACE IS TO BE GIVEN TO EACH RESIDENT AS WELL AS FOR ALL TENANTS TO INHABIT. AN OUTDOOR SPACE WILL BE DEDICATED FOR PUBLIC USE ON THE SITE. LOCATED ON DELANCEY STREET, WHICH IS A VERY BUSY ROADWAY THAT COMES OFF AND ONTO WILLIAMSBURG BRIDGE.SINCE THE SITE IS FULL OF MOTION, THE DESIGN WILL BE SEEN AS A DEFINITION OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD. MY DESIGN APPROACHED THE DESIGN BY THINKING OF THE SITE AS “A CITY WITHIN A BLOCK”. BY THIS I MEAN THAT MY DESIGN WILL ACT AS A COMMUNITY THAT RESPECTS THE OTHER HALF OF MY BLOCK AND THAT COULD POSSIBLY BE ARRANGED IN A DIFFERENT MANNER TO REPEAT THROUGHOUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF THE L.E.S.

MY WOOD MODEL BEGAN AS THE TOTAL MASS EACH TYPE OF PERSON IN THE HOUSING WOULD USE. THE SENIORS, STUDENTS AND FAMILY HAD THEIR OWN TOTAL MASS AND I BEGAN TO CREATE A “MINI” CITY WITHIN THE BLOCK.
THE FINAL MODEL WAS BARELY CHANGED FROM THE PREVIOUS ONE, JUST ADJUSTING THE PROPORTIONS. IT WAS VERY IMPORTANT IN THIS CASE TO FOLLOW THE FORM OF THE SCULPTURE BECAUSE OF ITS ATTRIBUTES.

VISUALIZATION III REDESIGN OF THE TURNING TORSO
THE TASK WAS TO CHOOSE AN EXISTING BUILDING AND TO REDESIGN IT IN OUR OWN WAY. THE TURNING TORSO IS A SKYSCRAPER IN SWEDEN DESIGNED BY SPANISH ARCHITECT SANTIAGO CALATRAVA. THE INSPIRATION FOR THE DESIGN OF THIS BUILDING CAME FROM A SCULPTURE CALLED THE TWISTING TORSO BASED ON THE HUMAN BODY. THIS PARTICULAR BUILDING CAUGHT MY ATTENTION BECAUSE OF THE PARTICULAR MODULES THAT TWIST ALL THE WAY UP. ITS A RESIDENTIAL BUILDING THAT MUST PRESENT INCREDIBLE VIEWS TO THE PEOPLE INSIDE. THE REDESIGN OF THE FACADE HAS MORE GLASS WITH VERTICAL MULLIANS THAT ARE REFLECTIVE. THE SAME TWISTING SECTIONS WERE KEPT. THE TREATMENT OF THE FACADE WAS CHANGED TO SEE HOW THE BUILDING WOULD LOOK WITH A MORE REFLECTIVE FACADE. THE USE OF 3D MAX AND RHINO HELPED MAKE THE NEW DESIGN POSSIBLE.
