TELLUS NURSERY SCHOOL Chief architects: THAM & VIDEGÅRD ARKITEKTER Address: Telefonplan, Stockholm, Sweden. Chief architects: Bolle Tham and Martin Videgård Project architect: Eric Engström Collaborators: Mårten Nettelbladt, Johan Björkholm, Karolina Nyström, Marcus Andrén, Julia Schönbrunn, Andreas Helgesson Client: Vasakronan AB User: Citycouncil of Hägersten-Liljeholmen Project design: 2007-2008 Construction: 2009-2010

On the border between a former urban/ industrial development and a small forest where new housing is being developed, this nursery school mediates between different contexts and scales. A semi enclosed entrance courtyard constitutes a first exterior space for parents and children meeting and leaving. The organic layout encourages movement as space becomes continuous and creates both exterior and interior rooms of challenging shapes. Windows are freely placed at different heights and allow for light and views to be adapted also to the scale of children, which further the relation between the interior and the exterior play ground and the wooded hill.

The organic layout encourages movement as space becomes continuous and creates both exterior and interior rooms of challenging shapes. Windows are freely placed at different heights and allow for light and views to be adapted also to the scale of children, which further the relation between the interior and the exterior play ground and the wooded hill. Together with the client and the pedagogues’ inspiration from the Reggio Emilia school, a new way to organize the interior was developed. The result is a rather unorthodox plan, where instead of a complete ’flat’ for each group of children, there will be a large common interior plaza where the six groups can interact around different activities, playing and learning projects. This main space is complemented with separate atelier spaces for water projects and art, as well as small secluded group rooms for rest and quiet activities. The facade panel, made of 50x50mm sawn wood, filters direct sunlight into the nursery school and create hidden windows that underscores the curved interior and exterior spaces. The building complies with the highest standards for environmentally friendly and long term sound construction.

Kindergarten Kekec is an extension of a typical Slovene prefab kindergarten from the 1980s. Situated in one of Ljubljana's residential areas, Kekec answers the growing demand for kindergartens. This comes as a result of Ljubljana having witnessed considerable population growth as well as legislative changes and a planned increase in building density inside the highway ring surrounding the city. The construction is made from prefabricated wood and was built in three days only. FACADE

The main design concept derives from the existing kindergarten's lack of play equipment. The new faรงade solves this weakness by offering a play element along all three exterior walls. It consists of dark brown roughcast and timber slats revolving around their vertical axe. The slats are the colour of natural wood on one side but painted into nine different bright colours on the other side. Aside from serving as a shading element, the toy slats provide for children's play and learning: as the children manipulate the colourful wooden planks they get to know different colours, experience wood as a natural material and constantly change the appearance of their kindergarten, all at the same time. The new kindergarten annex is attached to the south side of the existing building and stretches into the garden, which has enlarged the volume by an additional 130m 2 of playroom surfaces. Playrooms are compact but allow for the furniture to be arranged in various formations. Daylight floods the interior from three sides as well as the roof. Located between the two playrooms, washrooms have large glass openings, which visually increase their volume as well as ease tutor supervision. Wardrobes in the narrow cloakroom are made from pure natural wood. Wardrobes in the narrow changing room are made from pure natural wood and have pull-out boxes for shoes in all the colours of the faรงade, which function as a space saver, since they also serve as a bench.

In the past few years, owing to a lack of available space or obsoleteness of existing edifices, Slovenia has received a number of new kindergartens – both autonomous new structures or extensions of existing ones. Despite the number of projects, they succeed in remaining fresh and innovative. Both architects and investors realise the crucial importance of a well structured, and more importantly, cozy place to serve as children's first second home. The Selo kindergarten, a branch of the Ajdovscina kindergarten, designed by the young architectural group Minimart retains a distinct air of imaginativeness and innovation, despite its simplicity. The architects succeeded in creating an environment to which children gladly return. The investor decided to remove the standing edifice from 1935 due to obsolescence, opting to erect a new building on the site, adjusted to more modern ways of teaching and living. The new structure retains the connection to the building on the northwestern side and has a floorplan larger than the existing one.

FACADE

The building is one story, without architectonic barriers that would impede access from the ground level. This allows unimpeded access to children, parents with baby carriages and handicapped individuals. The rooms are functionally designed with the age of the children in mind, and their layout is such to allow natural lighting of the rooms.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

024

KINDERGARTEN

The new edifice contains two playrooms for two different age groups: a playroom for the first age group, with a protected, covered outside atrium and a playroom for the second age group with an open (partly covered) outside atrium which continues into a playground. The atrium is shielded from bad weather and can be shaded. It also includes a lavatory, allowing easier surveillance over the children during playtime outdoors. The central space is designed chiefly for physical activities and performances for children. It is furnished with equipment that allows creation of small cozy corners as well as equipment for use in joint children-parents activities. This is also where the parents' corner is situated. The rooms are optimally connected so as to allow a great degree of supervision over the children.

PLAN

The building blends seamlessly with the surrounding structures due to its pastel facade and its proportions. The shifted roof of the atrium provides for an interesting transition from the closed space of the playrooms into the open space of the playground, the creation of which that was also included within the ambit of the investment. The facade is decorated by designs of dandelion blowballs. The interior is largely pastel hued, with several decorative prints. The pastel hues are unobtrusive and subtle; they create a pleasing atmosphere for children as well as the local townspeople, who can employ the outdoor facilities in the afternoon. The dandelion clocks on the facade are a symbolic decoration, representing that most unique among flowers, unique as the children within the kindergarten, and the growth from flower to blowball symbolises those first steps of freedom that usher the way into a wider world.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

Kindergarten Ajda is the extension a kindergarten in Ravne na Koroškem, a Slovene town well known for its long tradition of manufacturing steel. Ajda is located in a housing neighbourhood built in the 1980s. It has replaced a former temporary kindergarten extension, which was set up from three containers and had one playroom, offering at the time immediate relief for lack of kindergarten space. Since containers proved a good solution, the local authorities commissioned the new, permanent kindergarten extension to be built out of containers as well. 13 ISO 20’ containers were therefore added to the three existing ones and all of them carefully incorporated into a unique whole. Containers are arranged into clusters and joined by a single roof, with spaces in between used for various purposes, such as dressing room, covered terraces and multi-purpose entrance. Since the frame structure of the kindergarten is from containers, the result is a spacious kindergarten constructed within a budget lower than that of an average Slovene kindergarten.

Ajda consists of a total of 16 containers, which host three classrooms, two covered terraces and two washrooms for children, all of them fluidly connected with the dressing room and multi-purpose entrance hall. In addition to the existing playroom, which was preserved from the temporary construction, Ajda now has two larger classrooms consisting of five containers each and covering a total surface of 73 m2 each. This is almost twice as much (+75%) as the state minimum standards require. The interior is not only spacious but well illuminated, since the playrooms’ longer walls are fully glazed to enable children good visual communication with the green surroundings. The multi-purpose entrance hall is spacious and accessible from both sides of the kindergarten. It hosts a children’s art gallery, play area and reading nook, and is equipped with a mobile theatre screen. One corner of the kindergarten was made into roofed open-air terraces in teak wood, allowing for the children to play outside well protected from weather inconveniences all year round. The signature design feature of kindergarten Ajda is its didactic façade, made from thick anthracite isolative and fire-resistant boards, which comply with high energy-efficiency standards, and covered in colourful magnets of five colours. The lightweight magnets are foldable so that children can manipulate them with ease, combining colourful design blocks to create animals, vehicles, buildings and other imaginative shapes. The interactive façade helps improve children’s motor skills, eyehand coordination and problem-solving techniques, as well as stimulates creativity and encourages the matching of colours, shapes and sizes. This design novelty of the world’s first magnetic façade combines interest, benefit and creativity in one: it can function as a convenient teaching tool for teachers, a support in the learning process for children, and by constantly changing the kindergarten’s appearance it keeps triggering children’s imagination day after day.

Situated in a residential neighborhood with buildings dating back to 1900, Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter’snew kindergarten?was required to have a “contemporary expression.” The school’s placement within the middle of a small park provides a protected outdoor area for the children to enjoy. The design offers two units for children between 1-3 years of age, and two units for older children between 3-6 years of age. These four units can operate both independently and together, as needed. All units share a common area and a kitchen in the heart of the building, while administration on the upper floor separated from the children areas.

The office was invited by the municipality of Trondheim to suggest an outdoor project for a kindergarten. Although the region is characterized by predominantly maritime climate and the weather varies considerably throughout the seasons, there is a popular saying ‘there is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing,’ and all seasons are equally attractive to the Norwegian children that enjoy outside activities all year round. Together with the standard playground facilities we wished to combine an enclosed space for fire, storytelling and playing.

ROOFPLAN

Given a very limited budget, reusing leftover materials (from a nearby construction site) was a starting point that led the design to be based on short wooden pieces. Inspired by the Norwegian turf huts and old log construction, a wooden construction was built and mounted on a lighted and brushed concrete base. The structure is made of 80-layered circles. The circles have varied radiuses and relative center point in relation to each other. Every circle is made out of 28 pieces of naturally impregnated core of pine that are placed with varied spaces to assure chimney effect and natural light. Oak separators differentiate vertically between the pine pieces to assure airflow allowing easy drying of the pine pieces. A double curved sliding door was designed for locking the structure.

This project is the first Brazilian nursery developed from a program specially directed for children aged from zero to 3 years, based on an exclusive educational concept. The focus of the project was to incorporate the specificities of this program, seeking adequate creative solutions. The priority was to conceive of an abstract non-stereotypical space with a ludic character that would meet the functional demands of the numerous procedures involved. Circulation is achieved through ramps and the use of friendly materials such as, the soft floor and operational ergonometric, were fundamental for a safe and comfortable environment where the children could readily develop their activities. The technical team involved adhered to this same orientation, offering ideal solutions for the best air and water quality, floor heating and balanced lighting.

FACADE

The project is designed as a variable section of wall and ceiling that involves compressing and decompressing the space accommodates. The change of section depending of the uses (corridor / access-bathrooms / classroom / porch (outside covered corridor) / garden and outside covered playground), the sun's movement and the longitudinal slope of the plot are responsible to design interior spaces that open to garden and outside covered playground. The compression-decompression game makes its effect when changing space both longitudinally and transversely in the sequences: corridor / access-bathrooms / classroom / porch / garden-outside covered playground (across) or classroom / bedroom / classroom (longitudinal).

062

KINDERGARTEN

The orientation in space makes the classroom uncompressed glass cracks appear in the upper corners of South tightening diagonal space in the North to the ground facing the interior garden and covered with large windows. These fissures South controlled light will be colored (rainbow color gamut) in dynamic areas of the corridor or in the outside covered playground. Inside the classroom, these cracks will be light South colorless glass. Versatility also arises in the operation of classrooms by level of education (two classrooms for children from 0-1 year with bedroom, two classrooms for children from 1-2 years with bedroom and three classrooms for children from 2-3 years without bedroom). It is proposed that all classrooms in the same level can raise the possibility of creating more space for group

activities, show themselves to the spatial continuity of the upper parts of each room separated by glass. Moreover, the idea that everything revolves around outside covered playground, and makes it as the heart of the educational center, which is linked by a continuous covered porch on the garden with all classrooms. Inside, the outside covered playground connects to the classrooms with the corridor on the South side. To the East lie the kitchen and dining areas, administration and gym closely linked to the corridor. outside, the use of white massive volumes makes the integration is adequate in El Chaparral, a district of Albolote that emerged as village of colonization in the 50s.

The approach to the nursery is on the basis of the land surface separated from the urban park of the same name. This place is chosen because is slighty higher than the elevation level of the rest of the park so the equipment has views of its surroundings. The school is a triangular building, one could say it is three buildings in a triangular arrangement, all joined by a skylit space in the center. This triangular space in the center, links the program pieces laid out in rectangular bars, is used as multiple use space, winter patio, serves as an extension of the dining area and performance hall. The program laid out in the three intertwined parts is space for classrooms overlooking to the park to the south, management and services and entry on the north edge and vertical circulation edge parallel to the main road to the east. That last volume contains a series of ramps that serve the upper floor of the second, provides a second access from the street and also gives the school a strong image via the floating roof and an expanse of glass that gives passersby a glance into the building's triangular core. On the North edge entrance, you find a top-floor cantilever that reaches towards the small courtyard, highlighting the main entrance and presenting a colorful face.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

The classroom module, facing to the south is separated from the courtyard by a transparent facade covered by some "interactive panels" which regulate the entry of light and can be used as a game. The classrooms share outdoor rooms caped by glazed canopies that take you to the back courtyard, behind the colored wall there they also share Nap Rooms. These three modules also presents a facade to the capped triangular space in the center. The entrance is covered in wood panels, the classrooms facade is presented in raw concrete, the entrance holes are presented with the same color tone as the shared

space outside. The vertical connexions are separated by glass facade with a drawing of the landscape of Torell贸 printed on. The space under the ramps is utilized for stroller. Overhead a series of southfacing skylights covered of solar panels on the outside, combined with clerestories, brings plenty of natural light to this space. Linking space, multiple space, expansion of the dining room, ... The changing scales of all the spaces also helps to create this sense of being outside of this courtyard.

THE KINDERGARTEN IN ROSALES DEL CANAL Architects: Magén Arquitectos / Jaime Magén, Fco. Javier Magén Location: Zaragoza, Spain Developer: Government of Aragon Construction Company: Gótico Construcciones y Rehabilitaciones SA Project Year: 2009 2 Project Area: 1 790,22 m Budget: 1 936 546.98 € Photographs: Jesús Granada

The Kindergarden in Rosales del Canal is located in an area of residential growth in the south-west of Zaragoza. This is the first phase of an educational facility that will be completed with the primary education building. In agreement with the criteria on accessibility and preferably south-facing orientation of teaching spaces, the three buildings – Kindergarten, dining hall/gymnasium and primary – are arranged in a U-shape on the perimeter of the plot. The Kindergarten is a horizontal construction that develops a nine units teaching programme, around an independent playground on the southern side of the site. A continuous linear porch links between the different buildings. The two main ideas that existed at the start of the project are based on children’s special perception of the constructed environment. The first idea has to do with scale and tries to combine the general volumetrics of the public facility with the more intimate and domestic scale that must accompany the child. The second idea fulfils the conception of the centre as a significant experience in spatial terms, related to the children’s creative world. The proposal has to do with the sensorial relationship between children and architecture, through the use of space, light, materiality and colour. The layout and the constructive logic of the project also respond to the determining factor of the need to execute the construction work in four and a half months.
