FLUX IDEAS . ALTERATIONS . INNOVATIONS

. . . .

Although being one of the most cosmopolitan and activated junction of Mumbai ,the Saat Rasta junction has a number of deformities be it the nature of retail experiences it provides or the disintegration of public and social lives in the neighbourhood creating paucity in the essence and experience that the site exhibits to its visitors. Having undividable potential due to its location, the site can be developed into a catalyst, inviting people from around the city, for vibrant and integrated experiences by plurifunctionality & bending & blending the existing orders by incorporating Mumbai’s food culture as the main spine of the design.

TRIPLE O - OBJECT ORIENTED ONTOLOGY Humans often tend to have the habit of conceiving things only in terms of the effects they have on them, keeping themselves at the centre of all the reactive processes, with all the other elements of the universe revolving around them. However, the theory of Triple-O as an approach particularly speculates the ideas of decentralizing human beings, rejection of undermining or overmining the value of entities.

8

Materialism can be considered as one such

aesthetic layer which decides the interrelation and contrast between objects, changing the ethnicity of a relationship and not just a mere factor for identification.

FLUX - IDEAS.ALTERATIONS.INNOVATIONS/ ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

The parameter of LAYERING deals with the idea of spatial arrangement of spaces, functions and materials to formulate introspective behaviour between the objects ranging from functional layering to aesthetic layers.

FLUX - IDEAS.ALTERATIONS.INNOVATIONS/ ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

MaNIPULATION OF ORDER:

This particular lens breaks apart the preconceived notion about specific sequencing of objects, spaces & their importance. The hierarchy of the entire arrangement, be it circulation, spatial configuration, transition or the volumes can be demolished or created based upon the setting.

Response to SITE

THE SITE - SAAT RASTA JUNCTION,MUMBAI Paradox of Interior and Exterior There is a change in nature of socialisation in the interior pockets of the building disjuncted from the exterior or public social like traffic and not affecting the internal Private Social patterns keeping the essence of the indegeneous settlements alive. Work Culture and Degree of Involvement A variety of formal as well as informal work patterns exist on the site ranging from the dhobi ghat, to small and informal shopping markets spilling over the streets, and formal street frontage shops around the junction which dominate and activate the footpaths.

Change in order of existing retail patterns

Unveiling the Focus (Jacob Circle) The junction is the central focus point and the true identity of the neighbourhood of saat rasta with all the streets converging towards it,however with physical accessibility of the junction difficult due to the degree of traffic throughout the day, it can only be visually connected.

INTEGRATED SUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS

Concave solar panel are installed at southern side of building to harness sunlight. This solar facade generates 32000 KW energy annually which is transformed into thermal energy and distributed to the kitchens of building reducing the use of indegenous gas.

Parts of the terraces are provided with green patches which act as an indirect barrier from harsh sun falling on the semi-open functional terrace spaces used for the food programme, also providing a sense of relief from the mass.

FLUX - IDEAS.ALTERATIONS.INNOVATIONS/ ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

Various food functions have their kitchens oriented in such a way that they can share the common exhaust shaft allowing constant warm air from the kitchen chimneys to rise and exit and replenishing the kitchens with fresh air.

The south facing habitable spaces of the building are covered with a seamless layer of light weight aluminium fins placed at an angle to create barrier between south harsh sun and the habitable areas at the same time not compromising on ventilation.

Alterning cognition through interactive & voluntary engagement For a cluster community like Versova Koliwada, cultural & occupational binding are the key factors for providing multiple opportunities for different users on site. However, natural patterns of socialization through livelihood are uprooting at a fast pace due to rapid urbanization causing transitions in the nature and space of their work. The design focuses on creating a melange of micro social transitional spaces that encourage cross interactions between the community members by reviving the traditional socialism aspect which somewhere has become vulnerable and fast diminishing. The design forms a platform for exchange in terms of occupational, cultural & other ancilliary topics.

POINTS TO TAKE AHEAD

There are very less purposeful social grounds available in koliwada, hence most of the occupational routines become important social and interactive places where they get a chance to engage with the user groups.

CUMULATIVE SOCIAL MIND MAPPING OF VARIOUS USER GROUPS ON SITE

FLUX - IDEAS.ALTERATIONS.INNOVATIONS/ ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

deriving points of focus/concentrations of multiple user groups

The occupational commons of the fishing market area along the ice factory can become crucial social spots as they allow all the identified user groups to come across together, overlapping their functions, and thus creating multiple opportunities for social engagement if interwoven by time and function together.

A.C.T.I.V.E. - THESIS PROJECT/ ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

The Pandurang Ramle marg - the central axis for koliwada is also one such thoroughfare used by almost all the actors on site. Many crucial spots on the road such as the Hingala devi temple spot, the junction connecting jetty and the junction with redundant open space are points of encounter between various user groups.

27

ADAPTING DESIGN LANGUAGE VIA SKETCHES Allowing elements in design to become social elements Not only the space but even the elements that actually constitute the physical presence of space can act as socializing elements. Play of volumes and heights in space allow people to either socially connect or disconnect .

Play of heights & volumes in fish market

Design language derivation via roofing system

Integrating ice factory with other programmes as social spaces

Corridors as transitional social spaces & movement axis

ELEMENTS IN DESIGN

Heirarchy, space & modulations

External connectivity instead of internal for better chances of social encounters.

SOCIAL STRATERGIES with response to site & programme

DESIGN MASSING & EVOLUTION STAGES The project is planned and visualised keeping the prime motive of the design as socialization be it internally, externally, physically or even just visually.

Play between interior & exterior spaces

Retaining the existing structures + allocating zones & masses

01 Social spaces as paths of travel

Division of mass into floor plates + connecting functionalities

02 Inviting/ blending program at public edge

Locating circulation + adapting design language

03 Proximate functionalities for optimum & integrated solutions

Based upon the programmatic interventions, various social stratergies in response to the site, its people, the peculiar habits related to the community in terms of micro & macro spatial requirements are studied and determined and tried to be reflected via the design to make it more social and acceptable. . . . .

In an urban development model like Mumbai, where the socio-economic disparity is directly proportional to the increasing property rates,it has become a tedious job, to improve and maintain the quality of life offered to the people. Apartells (Apartments + Hotel) are modern co-living spaces which are dynamic, efficient and fun alternative to lodging and also cater to a number of emergency travel trends, with an extended period of time, unlike hotels or conventional residential dwellings.

Multiple accesses and connectivity

Cross ventilation & wind direction

SITE LOCATION PLAN The site is located in BKC, Mumbai, adjacent to the mahim creek. Residents get an uninterrupted view of the mahim creek area with ample mangroves visible direct from all the balconies of the service apartments.

Bandra is split by the local railway-line into West Bandra & East Bandra. The west of the station is predominantly of residential zones that are under constant development and there are a few pockets of commercial buildings. The small scale industries around the eastern slums with shopfronts on the streets and living spaces above also form a stronger user typology along the adjacent areas of the stations and thus activating the streets with various activities throughout the day.
