It’s time for the party preceeding your nuptials! Here’s a list of ideas for party themes and games that’ll keep everyone having a great time. First, the basics. Anyone close to the bride can host the shower, be it the Maid of Honor, the bride’s sister, or Mom. The shower should be at least 2 weeks before the wedding itself, and showers are usually informal affairs that can be anything from a brunch in a restaurant to a pool party barbecue in your back yard. They can be ‘girls only’ or co-ed to include the whole gang! Traditionally food is served, guests mingle, and the bride opens her gifts. (be sure to have a friend write down who gave which gift to make it easier for the bride later when she writes her thank-you notes) As for the theme of the party, the sky is the limit. How about a day at the spa with you and your bridesmaids? Perfect pedicures, massages and facials, all in a relaxing, sweetly scented atmosphere. Spa parties can be held at a spa, or even do-it-yourself in your home! At home, you can have a cupcake baking party, or a wine and cheese tasting with an array of tasty international cheeses from your local market. How about a scrapbooking party? Set up the table with all sorts of scrapbook supplies and have your girlfriends bring photos, recipes, and other memorabilia to create a great book the bride can keep for years.

For the more casual shower have a barbecue with cocktails and music, or a Happy Hour theme with wings, mozzarella sticks and interesting beers and wines. A bowling party at the local bowling alley is also a fun option! Now that you have some shower ideas, it’s game time! Try the following games to keep the laughter rolling: Bridal Mad Libs. Type out the story of how the couple met, or how they got engaged and make a Mad Lib out of it! Oven Mitt Pantyhose Game. Give all the ladies oven mitts and knee high panty hose and line them up. Start the timer, and the first to put on both panty hose while wearing the oven mitts wins a prize! (Baking Mix, perhaps?) Honeymoon Scavenger Hunt. Hide wedding or honeymoon related items around the house or yard and get everyone searching!

GCW: Tell us about yourself. What motivated you to begin designing bridal headpieces and accessories? Jannie: I have always had a passion for accessories. So when I took my degree in design at the Scandinavian Academy of International Fashion and Design in Copenhagen, I knew, I wanted to design accessories. I started out designing jewelry, but when I got engaged 5 years ago, I wanted to create something unique and special for my wedding, and that was the beginning of Jannie Baltzer Couture Headpieces. I graduated from the Scandinavian Academy of International Fashion and Design in Copenhagen, receiving an honorary prize from Her Royal Highness Princess Benedict for the most creative collection. My work is regularly featured in magazines like VOGUE, Elle and Cosmopolitan.

GCW: What influences and inspires your designs? Jannie: The 2014 collection is truly luxurious and delicate, and is all about luminous textures and shine. This collection has exquisitely intricate beadwork and beautiful shades of honey gold, champagne, antique silver and ivory. This collection is inspired by the beauty of the nature and its organic shapes - the curl of a leaf, skeleton leaves, delicate flowers and branches - these are all exquisite things that catch my eye and find their way into my making. My inspiration comes from the details of past eras; The French Bohemianism of the early 1900’s, the details of the Art Deco movement and the glamour of 1920´s Hollywood, which is expressed in the luxurious materials such as: French lace, Edwardian Lace, silk and soft chiffon. I only use handmade flowers, and all the bead work is handcrafted with beautiful Preciosa crystals and pearls at my studio in Copenhagen. I love to use interesting pieces of vintage to add whimsy and magic, and to get a unique one of a kind piece. GCW: Would we find your pieces in boutiques, or is it best to contact you directly? Jannie: I have selected Bridal Boutiques around the world, but I also ship worldwide from my studio in Copenhagen, where all my accessories are handmade. GCW: Do you have any style tips or advice for brides? Jannie: I think it’s important that you look like you on your wedding day - not too much makeup - that being said you still want to look stunning. So if you wear a very detailed dress, you might want to choose a more simple but elegant headpiece. But if your dress is a little simpler, I would choose a more dramatic headpiece, which would spice up the look!

GCW: Can you give us a small account on a day in the life of Jannie Baltzer? Jannie: It always starts with a good cup of coffee! Then I check emails and look at my To-Do list (I always make a list the night before, so I know, what to do the following day). Obsessed about fit, drape, aesthetic, styling, every aspect of it, and bridal was a natural starting point for me because it’s a great challenge to produce a bridal collection of 10-12 unique pieces that still sit together and tell a story. Each piece must be a standout, and it’s the ultimate satisfaction to see a bride choosing to wear us on her wedding day. GCW: Who is your style icon? Sarah: I tend to flit between muses, depending on what I’m designing. What defines perennial style is a sexy, confident woman...Marlene Dietrich, Coco Chanel. I’m loving Kate Middleton’s style right now, she’s the embodiment of the modern lady. GCW: What influences and inspires your designs? Sarah: Cut is very important, researching and drap-

ing in the stand as I design. The embellishments can spring from anywhere, the embroidery on daisy from this seasons collection was inspired by a photograph I’d taken of an iron gate in Paris. GCW: What factors do you take into consideration with each collection? Sarah: We always start with feedback, what are our customers loving, and what can we do better! What will they be wanting next season? There is always a singular idea/theme that stands out so strongly as the key direction, I’m compelled to weave the collection around it, that gives a coherence to the seasons pieces. GCW: Where are your gowns created, and in what fabrics? Sarah: We work alot with French laces, silks, embroideries and tulles. Some dresses are made in Asia and some in Australia. We work with the best factories, with highly skilled seamstresses and beaders, as there

Wendy or PR in LA. Meetings with our Australian team. I try to limit my time in meetings but I like calling rather than emailing. It’s a more effective means of communicating and I like to keep in touch with everyone. I try to sketch every day, and work it in, around my appointments and home life. I’m constantly sketching, at airports, over lunch or at home with the boys. 4:00pm- I’m at the gym working out or taking a long walk, along the beachfront or through the bush for about an hour and a half. 5:30pm- Homework and dinner time with the boys.

is a lot of work and a high degree of difficulty, especially working with silks on the bias. GCW: What advice would you give brides, to help them through their wedding gown search? Sarah: Relax and enjoy it. An impending wedding can be stressful but you have to enjoy the process. Use Pinterest or magazine pulls to define what you’re liking, and keep an open mind. Try a variety of styles on because you might find The Dress is one you wouldn’t have picked off the rack initially.

7:30pm- After I put the boys to bed I’m back in email overseas. It’s midday and so I’m talking with Italy or the UK, sometimes it’s technical questions or design briefs to finish, but mostly trying to clear the never ending pile on my desk. I’ll clock off any time between 11pm and 1am depending on the workload, and sometimes when we’re putting the finishing touches in a collection, I will work a bit later than that.

GCW: Can we find your pieces in boutiques, or is it best to contact you directly? Sarah: We are stocked in 13 stores across the US currently, details and trunk show dates are on our website. GCW: Can you give us a small account on a day in the life of Sarah Janks? Sarah: 6:00am- Coffee and checking emails. 7:30am- Breakfast with my two boys and then drop them at school. 9:00am- I’m in the office. Every day is different, and can include design briefings with Danny my assistant, fittings or meetings with stylists and photographers, hair and makeup for upcoming product and campaign shots. Amy: After Bill’s proposal in 1996, I experienced first-hand the arduous task of trying to find the perfect wedding gown! My needs seemed simple enough – I wanted to look elegant and modern without spending a fortune. In my search I found that I could opt to spend a reasonable amount for something mediocre, or spend an outrageous amount on something fabulous. Being an experienced designer, I felt my best bet would be to design my own gown. A few years later, business plan in hand, Bill and I launched the Amy Kuschel collection. GCW: Who is your style icon? Amy: Oh, so many. I’ve always loved Coco Chanel, Lauren Bacall, Audrey Hepburn... GCW: What influences and inspires your designs? Amy: I find inspiration in everything, it’s always evolving. For our 2014 collection my inspiration focused on layers of personality... knowing yourself, embracing your layers. GCW: What factors do you take into consideration with each collection? Amy: Where we’ve been, where we see the designs evolving. It’s different each year... GCW: Where are your gowns created, and in what fabrics? Amy: Each of our gowns is crafted by hand in our San Francisco design and

We love French and American-made laces and we find silks from all over the world, but we’re so lucky to make everything by hand in San Francisco! GCW: What advice would you give brides, to help them through their wedding gown search? Amy: The one thing you must know to find the perfect dress? Yourself. Know yourself, embrace your layers and be open-minded. Bring only a few guests, those who are most supportive of your vision – helping you to find the dress that captures your personality. GCW: Can we find your pieces in boutiques, or is it best to contact you directly? Amy: Bay Area brides can contact our flagship salon in San Francisco. We also have retailers throughout the United States as well as a few international retailers. All of our salons are on our site. Brides can view the gowns prior to their appointment on our website – we’re really excited about our new “favorites” tab. Being prepared for your appointment is a plus. It’s always best to call ahead to schedule a one-on-one consultation. GCW: Can you give us a small account on a day in the life of Amy Kuschel? Amy: I start everyday with yoga, and then take the ferry into San Francisco. Once I’m at the office there are a lot of meetings with the team to discuss gown construction, special client requests, marketing... Lots of communication! This time of year I’ll spend extra time in fittings, photo shoots, interviews, and sketching. Quality “me” time is important so I meditate on my way home! I try to head home before it gets too late to have dinner with my family. Balancing AKSF and Team Brugger is vital! Planning an Outdoor Wedding By Christine Tuohy

An outdoor wedding can be a beautiful thing! But did Mother Nature receive her invitation? Planning an outdoor wedding so many months in advance can be scary. Here are some tips for preparing for the unexpected. Even though you have your heart set on an outdoor wedding, always make sure there’s a ‘Plan B’. For example, if you’re marrying in a rose garden and it’s going to be a torrential downpour that day, double check ahead of time to make sure there’s an event hall nearby to move everything indoors. Don’t fret. You’ll still see the roses out the windows, and the thunder and lightning could add an interesting touch to your ceremony! It could be the most memorable part of everyone’s experience that they’ll talk about for years to come. It could also come in handy to have pop up canopies available for shelter. Don’t forget canopy weights if it’s windy! The last thing you want is a 10 ft square canopy flipping over on your guests or your cake. And speaking of the cake, does this venue you’re thinking about have a kitchen for the caterers? A lot of catering companies will need an approved on-site kitchen for the food prep. It can also be a health department issue, so make sure the caterer is ok with using that particular kitchen, or not having a kitchen available at all. Flexibility is the most important part of planning an outdoor wedding. It may not just be rain, either. If it turns chilly, perhaps you could offer up blankets or wraps for your guests or have outdoor heaters. Just a light drizzle could mean picking up umbrellas for everyone, or adversely, an overly sunny ceremony might call for a few parasols or fans. Shade and shelter should always be available. Keep a lot of drinking water on hand if it’s hot, as well. How about bugs? Getting married in an open field or by a river could mean everyone flailing at mosquitoes all day. Consider bug block for the guests or citronella candles or incense for the surrounding area. If you’re getting married on a cloudless sunny day, and are fair skinned, don’t forget to put on some sunblock, too. You don’t want to be beet red and sunburned in all your wedding photos! What about electricity at the venue? If you’re having a band, or electric outdoor lighting, make sure you have a good quality gas generator handy. You’d hate to have it break down or run out of gas halfway through the band playing, or have all the lights go out all of a sudden. If you have non-electric lighting such as oil lamps or candles, make sure you’ll have plenty of candles and lamp oil and lighters. Keep in mind they could also blow out or tip over in the wind. And who’s going to relight them when they go out? Solar powered or battery operated lights are also an option, although they could fade as the evening progresses. Pick appropriate outdoor furniture. Lightweight chairs or tables could blow over if it gets windy, and no one will be able to sit in certain types of chairs if they get rained on. Metal chairs could be scorching hot in the sun as well. It’s also an excellent idea to tell your guests what to expect as far as the location. You don’t want to have guests turn up in high heels or leather shoes only to find out the wedding is in a soft meadow, a sandy beach, or a possibly muddy farm. Bathrooms! Did this make it on your to-do list? Whatever outdoor venue you choose, make sure there are restrooms available for everyone, and if not, you might have to rent port-a-johns for the day. And don’t forget to rent hand-washing stations as well. We don’t want guests getting sick afterwards. Most importantly, keep in mind that even though the weather can be unpredictable, the way you handle it is what makes the difference. It rained on your wedding day and everyone got soaked? Big deal! It was still fun, everyone will remember it, and you did what you set out to do. Got married! Don’t stress about it. Laugh it off and enjoy it, no matter what happens!

Bride To Bride

Helpful advice from previous brides to be engaged and getting married to Travis that all of the little details I thought I would care about didn’t seem important anymore. Our families helped out a lot, and everything truly turned out perfectly! 4. Favorite moments: There are so many; it was truly the best day of our lives! I loved seeing Travis at the end of the aisle as I was walking down with my dad, our first kiss, dancing with my bridesmaids, smashing cake in each other’s faces…. Celebrating with all of the people that we love, made the night such a blast. 5. Funniest moments: One of our family friends brought some music for the DJ and ended up singing a few songs at our reception. He has a great voice and many were shocked by how well he did. He sang at my parents’ reception 30 years ago so maybe he’s good luck! Also, all of the single girls backing out of the way for my sister and Maid of Honor to catch the bouquet… I think they knew she wanted it so badly! 6. Your advice for other brides: Don’t sweat the small stuff! The day goes by faster than you can even imagine and there are only a few things that will really matter looking back. Enjoy the day with your new husband and take lots of pictures and videos to make sure you remember every moment. Don’t spend the day rushing around, let yourself relax and have fun. You’re the bride! 7. Most important lesson you learned from your wedding: Love really is all you need - The love you feel for your new spouse, your family and friends, will make the day the most magical of your life no matter what happens!

Travis & Christina 1. Your unique wedding at a glance: We were married on April 27, 2013. I am a huge lover of all things Disney, so I wanted a Cinderella wedding without it being too youthful, cheesy or “princessy”. We got married in the middle of the beautiful Heather Farms Park in Walnut Creek , CA and let the spring colors dictate our color palette and flowers. It was the most beautiful day! 2. Your biggest challenge in planning your wedding: Our biggest challenge was keeping our budget down with such a big guest list. We both have large families and we invited over 175 people. 3. How you overcame/made it work: We really focused on our priorities – food, music, and photography. And, of course, my dress! I was so happy

Everyone cracked up! 6. Your advice for other brides: Don’t sweat the small stuff. Take your time in planning your big day, be flexible, and ask friends for help. 7. Most important lesson you learned from your wedding: To see the humor in everything, and allow that to be the basis from which we build our future. Life always has it’s ups and downs, and if you approach it with some humor, everything will work out just fine.

Blain & Michelle 1. Your unique wedding at a glance: We chose a country and camo theme, incorporating lots of burlap, lace and olive green with hints of pink for pop. Our location was a mountain resort with several cabins and a gorgeous rock waterfall into the pool. Being great fans of bacon, we kept that as a thread to our menu, from bacon wrapped jalapeno appetizers, and a topping for the Mac-n-cheese bar, to French Toast Maple Bacon cupcakes – it just worked. Our friends are still talking about those cupcakes!! 2. Your biggest challenge in planning your wedding: Our biggest challenge was getting families from 2 coasts and 2 countries in the same place at the same time! 3. How you overcame/made it work: We found a great resort that could accommodate us all. We planned it as a vacation for everyone too. That way both families and our friends could relax. It gave us all time to en-

joy the wonderful mountain setting we had. Spending a few days getting to know one another ahead of the big day really took the stress out of the whole event. 4. Favorite moments: The night before the wedding, we had a bonfire and s ‘mores roast under a full moon. All the kids loved it, and it was a great way to relax and enjoy the evening. Before the ceremony, our friend Lorne played the bagpipes as our guests arrived. It was so romantic and special. Being that we both have Scottish ancestry, it made for a really fun personal touch. Shawn & Virginia 1.Biggest Challenge in planning the wedding: I would say the biggest challenge in the wedding planning, was the deciding what kind of party to have, to entertain 200 people. We wanted everyone to feel comfortable and have a great time. The venue provided the warm welcome along with good food, good music, and a variety of delicious desserts, the party took care of itself. My sisters made 90 percent of the decorations. (pinterest inspired) 2.Favorite moments: The ceremony was my favorite. That was the most important part to Shawn and I. And watching

the magic come alive, all the hard work my mom and her crew did, watching it being noticed and appreciated, really was neat to experience. Also, all the conversations and friends and family interaction were a

great thing to see. 3.Funniest moments: The flower girls were entirely on cue with having to coax their smiles and all their fidgeting during the ceremony, (fighting over holding the brideâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bouquet while matron of honor diffuses,) but it was fine. It was all worth it. It is totally something to laugh at. 4.Advice for brides: Advice for other brides would be to relax and enjoy the day. Even if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like all the attention and feel people are going out of their way for you, They Are!! And they want to! Eat it up. Be happy and laugh. Do not drink too much. It all goes by too fast. You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to miss a thing. A little Champs is fine, just stay clear headed!

for Wedding Dress Shopping by Christine Tuohy

Let the dress hunt begin! Here are 10 handy tips for shopping for the perfect wedding dress. 1. Shop early and shop around. Give yourself plenty of time to find ‘the one’. Just like you did with your husbandto-be! You may even need to try on the same dress 2 or 3 times to make sure, and visit multiple bridal shops to get an idea of styles and prices. You can also look through wedding magazines to get ideas. Getting it out of the way early, could save you from making a quick decision later on, that you may end up regretting. 2. Take friends with you. Bring your mother-in-law as a gesture of good will, and maid of honor if you can. If you’d rather have a more solo experience, you can still make them feel included in the process by texting or emailing them pictures of the dresses that you’re trying on. 3. Snap a few photos. Don’t be afraid to take pictures of potential dresses. Sometimes just ‘sleeping on it’ and looking at the photos the next day, over your morning coffee, can make you see the dresses in a whole new light. You can sometimes experience ‘wedding dress overload’ if you’ve tried on a dozen different ones in a day. Give yourself a break. Think it over. 4. Fit the dress to the setting. A formal ball gown might look out of place on a beach, and that long train you’re pondering, could be a bad choice if you’re having an outdoor wedding and dragging it across a lawn. Also, if you’re being married in a house of worship, check if they have any guidelines about exposed shoulders and whatnot. 5. Find a salesperson you trust. Some bridal salon salespeople can be very helpful as far as what type of dress fits your body type, or what different styles you might try based on the ‘buzzwords’ you give them such as ‘romantic’, ‘glamorous’, ‘classic’, or ‘elegant’. But don’t be buffaloed into buying a dress you might not like, by a pushy salesgirl. It’s YOUR day, and it’s ultimately YOUR choice. Go with your heart. 6. Research styles you like on the internet. Print the ones you like and bring them as a guideline for the salesperson. You may like the shoulders on one, but the skirt on another. Piecing together elements of what you like, could lead you to find just what you want. Don’t be afraid to change an aspect of a dress you find either. Don’t like the sash? Scrap it! Train too long? Alter it down! Don’t like the long sleeves? Alter them shorter! Almost any dress can be altered. 7. Trust your instincts. If you need reassurance that the dress looks great on you, it’s probably not ‘the one’. Can you see yourself immortalized forever in photographs in this dress? Or would you look back and think, ‘I never did like that dress…’ When it’s the right one, you’ll know. You won’t even want to try on any others after that. 8. Try it on even if it doesn’t fit! What? Really? Yes! If you’re a 14 and there’s an 8 on the rack that you positively adore, don’t be afraid to put aside any embarrassment and try it on. Have a girlfriend, your Mom, or a salesperson hold the back together while you look in the mirror. You may have just found a dress you would’ve otherwise not even looked at because it wasn’t in your size. Any dress can be ordered to fit. 9. Wear the correct undergarments and shoes to try on dresses. Heel height can affect your posture and the overall fit of your dress. Choose heels in a comfortable height that will be the same as the ones you wear on your wedding day. Undergarments are important as well. When trying on dresses, your undergarments should be similar to what you will wear on your wedding day, so there are no unpleasant surprises after you buy your dress. 10. Pick a dress that fits your body type. Are you self conscious about your arms? Or your tummy? Your behind? Different styles of dresses can hide or accentuate what you do or don’t have. Stick thin? Add some curves with a corset! Top heavy? A-line gowns can add some hips! There’s a style that will flatter any body type out there. Now go find that perfect dress! Happy Hunting!
