Call for Tellieqa Telliqun Participants

ABOUT TELLIEQA TELLIQUN Tellieqa Telliqun is a fun and whimsical wacky race involving man-made floating crafts, where participants team up to create their own original floating craft and ‘sail’ across the Grand Harbour, from Senglea to Valletta, without the use of oars and/or motors. This will take place on 16th August 2020* as part of the larger event Valletta Pageant of the Seas. The objective of the race is to reach the other side of the Grand Harbour and make it through the finishing line. The teams will be prized based on who arrives first to the finishing line. For reasons of space and safety, only 20 crafts will be allowed to take part in the race. The selection of applicants will be on a first come, first served basis as long as the application is completed in full and the proposed craft complies with the conditions set below, making it eligible for selection. *Dates subject to change according to the measures and guidelines set out by the Superintendent of Public Health and the Government of Malta, in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Conditions: The Participant 1. To take part, an application form which includes details of the participants and a description of the vessel must be submitted in full (i.e. no information may be missing) by the deadline; 2. Participants in Tellieqa Telliqun must be at least 18 years of age; 3. Participants can be individuals or groups; 4. Each participant/ member of the group on board the craft during the race must submit a disclaimer certifying that they are physically fit; can swim and are responsible for their own health and safety during the building of the boat and race; 5. All participants must wear a fully-functioning life jacket. The Valletta Cultural Agency will not be providing any life jackets to the participants;


6. Each individual participant or group who builds a craft and takes part in the activities of both the 15th and 16th August will be entitled to a grant of Eur 300 to cover the cost of building materials 7. Claims for costs of repairs or compensation for damage to the craft prior to, during or after the event will not be considered; 8. Participants are allowed to seek sponsors to cover any difference between the cost of material and the grant of Eur 300 offered by the VCA and to discreetly display the signs of the sponsors on their craft during the race; 9. Participants must remain physically on the craft throughout the race. The use of hands, legs and feet to propel the craft is permitted but the torso must be on the craft at all times during the race; 10. Each group shall nominate 1 person to act as signatory and contact person with the Valletta Cultural Agency and as signatory of an agreement with the Agency; The Vessel: 11. Vessels must not be more than 4m x 4m in size; 12. The use of engines and/or oars is forbidden; 13. The use of boat/jet ski hulls (regardless of type or material) is forbidden; 14. The materials chosen to build the craft cannot be hazardous to humans and/or the environment; 15. The craft built must consist of a minimum of 80% recycled material; 16. Each vessel must be equipped with a hook to allow it to be towed; 17. The Agency reserves the right to inspect the craft during construction and/or before, during or after the race to ensure that the conditions are being adhered to. If a craft breaches any of the above conditions, it will be automatically disqualified. Timeline: February 2019: Launch of the registration process for applicants. 28th June 2020: Deadline for registration of the vessel at 12:00 noon. 6th July 2020: Communication to the first 20 applicants to submit their registration.


14th August 2020: Craft must be completed. 15th August 2020: Craft must be brought to the designated area in Senglea and displayed to the public. Participants will be asked to stay with the crafts to answer any questions the public may have for not more than two hours. Visitors will choose their favourite craft for the ‘People’s Choice Award’. 16th August 2020: Pageant and race as part of the Valletta Pageant of the Seas

Prizes: First Prize: Eur 1,500 and Shield Second Prize: Eur 500 and Trophy Third Prize: Eur 300 and Trophy People’s Choice Award: Trophy All participants: Medal The first, second and third position will be marked at the very end of the race with a special pageant using differently colored smoke/flares with colors associated to each team. Actual prizes will then be given privately after the race.
