Colon case: jury returns’ guilty verdict A Hudson County jury of nine men and three women returned a guilty verdict for the man accused of fatally shooting a 16-year-old Kearny girl in the head in the bedroom of her Belgrove Drive home more than two years ago. The jurors deliberated about a day and a half before reaching a consensus last Thursday night that Cruz Martinez Jr., now 43, of Hazleton, Pa., did, in fact, pull the trigger on Jan. 17, 2013, killing Alishia Colon, as the victim’s 7-year-old brother watched in horror. Martinez will be sentenced July 24 by Superior Court Judge Martha Royster in Jersey City. He could get up to life in prison. Three co-defendants who have pled to lesser charges are slated to be sentenced June 5 but that date is subject to change. “This was a horrible crime – the killing of a 16-year-old girl that happened in front of the victim’s 7-year-old brother – and the evidence to convict [Martinez] was overwhelming,” Assistant Hudson County Prosecutor Sal Rozzi, who presented the case, told The Observer last Friday. The jury heard the testimony of nine state witnesses spread over three days of the see GUILTY page

Criminal ring swiped equipment By Karen Zautyk Observer Correspondent LYNDHURST – n Aug. 10, 2014, a Caterpillar Skid-Steer, valued at $17,950, disappeared from the school construction site of Lyndhurst’s new Memorial Campus on New York Ave. In October, nearly two months to the day it went missing, it was recovered in the tiny Warren County town of Hardwick, Lyndhurst police reported. Last week, authorities announced that the local theft was one of at least 21 committed by a criminal ring that stole heavy equipment from construction sites throughout the state and then sold them out of a vacant lot in Newark to buyers from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. According to Acting N.J. Attorney General John J. Hoffman, the machinery was worth a total of approximately $300,000.

By Ron Leir Observer Correspondent BELLEVILLE – ike the disappearing, then reappearing, rabbit in the hat, a redeveloper for the vacant Roche property in Belleville was unveiled – but in revised form – last Tuesday night. As officials huddled in the office of the Township Clerk perusing their meeting agenda, interim Township Manager Kevin Esposito was asked about a resolution proposing the appointment of Tulfra Realty II LLC and Hampshire Global to make over the 18.5-acre parcel at Franklin Ave. and Mill St. Tulfra, Esposito said, is “a highly qualified developer” with “a multitude of commercial sites throughout the state” on its resume and Hampshire, he added, is responsible for a number of “retail, office and commercial properties.” The firms would combine as a “joint venture” for the Roche project, he said. “I feel positive and excited because they’re both very capable developers and have experience in dealing with properties like this [with environmental issues],” Esposito asserted. Officials then proceeded to the Township Council chambers where, during a pre-meeting caucus, Township Attorney Tom Murphy had a surprise announcement. “We’re removing Hampshire from the resolution,” he said. Murphy told Mayor Ray Kimble and members of the Township Council that

of Belleville should not be responsible for the cleanup of that site – the owner should.” Roche, according to Murphy, has pledged up to $5 million toward the cleanup of contaminants at the site, but Longo has cautioned that the actual cost could be much higher and that the township shouldn’t take the chance of ending up on the hook for the balance. But the township is putting responsibility for any remediation on the redeveloper. The resolution says, in part, that, “The township believes that Tulfra Realty II LLC would be “… capable of … providing acceptable assurances to both Roche and the Township that both current necessary remediation and downstream environmental liability would be appropriately addressed could lead to litigation by Tulfra Realty II LLC, which could’ve tied us up including but not limited to, for years. an N.J. Instead, one council member later told The Observer, it is likely that there will be some type of partnership, with Hampshire involved “on the construction side” and Tulfra, as “the main guy,” handling the overall development, possibly finding tenants to occupy the space. Murphy added that Tulfra, Roche and the township must come to an understanding about responsibilities for undertaking a remedial investigation and environmental cleanup of the site. Still, Murphy advised the governing body, even with the revisions made to the resolution, this is not yet a done deal. “If this [negotiating a redevelopment agreement]

KPD: Arrest was warranted
A Kearny man was remanded to the Hudson County Jail following his arrest May 9 on five outstanding warrants, totaling more than $50,000, Kearny police reported. Chief John Dowie said that Officer John Fabula was on patrol at 7 a.m. at Kearny and Pavonia Aves. when he recognized 29-year-old Douglas Welfl from past police interaction. Fabula confirmed that Welfl was the subject of three Kearny warrants: one for $25,000 for simple assault; another for $25,000 for violating a final restraining order, and, the most recent, a $2,000 warrant for criminal sexual conduct, police reported. Additionally, police said, Welfl was wanted by North Arlington for defiant trespass and contempt of court. He was arrested, processed at headquarters and shipped to the jail. ••• Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following:
May 8 Officer Jay Ward was on the 200 block of Wilson Ave. at 5:30 p.m. when his onboard computer alerted him that a parked 2001 Hyundai had a suspended registration and that its owner had three warrants, police said. Ward located the owner -- Kevin Baez-Castillo, 19, of Kearny -- who was charged with the registration violation, failure to surrender a suspended license and failure to have the vehicle inspected. Police said the warrants, from Kearny, Montclair and East Orange, were all motor-vehi-

individual, confirmed the warrants and arrested Aaron Taylor, 27, of Harrison, police reported. The KPD said Taylor was remanded to the county jail on three Kearny warrants -- two for assault and one for harassment -- and one from Harrison for an ordinance violation.

Drive time lunacy T
he other day I was driving from Kearny to Jersey City along the Belleville Pike (Rt. 7) on a very dark night and, as I traveled up one of those roller coaster “bridges,” I could make out the outlines of a work crew on the west side of the highway. But I had to strain to see anything else – particularly the roadway – because of the two klieg lights aimed in my direction, nearly blinding me. I had to shield my eyes from the glare to avoid striking the traffic cones which, I belatedly discovered, had been set up parallel to the eastbound lane to protect the crew from oncoming vehicles. Luckily, I managed to safely negotiate my way through what I considered an extremely hazardous situation, all the while thinking I was being featured in an outtake from some horror film. Perhaps I’m overreacting but I think we all have enough stress to deal with in life with-
out also having to worry about whether we’ll get home in one piece. So that’s why I was baffled to read a May 15 Star-Ledger story about a 64-year-old Hoboken motorist whose license has been suspended 34 times – four of those times because he was charged with DUI, most recently on April 13, according to the N.J. DMV. Most recently, he was stopped in Hoboken on May 14 and charged with driving while suspended while he was drunk. No valid license since 2010. Question: How come this guy is still out there driving, endangering all of us? Why hasn’t he been put away? I’d ask Gov. Christie but he’s probably in Iowa or New Hampshire or someplace other than the Garden State and you know he doesn’t have to worry about driving there. Better maybe to take the train, right? Which brings us to Amtrak and the “positive train control”
which could have distracted the engineer. Folks intent on mischief have easy access to the tracks through gaps in fencing. And now, eight people who only expected to get from one place to another on a train are dead. Desperate, hopeless migrants risking everything by booking passage on rickety wooden boats through crooked smugglers are also trying to get from one place to another but countries like Malaysia GOOGLE IMAGES and Indonesia say they want them to go away. Buckle up or face court fines: HPD Fair warning to all motorists driving through Harrison: Harrison PD will be cracking down on unbuckled motorists and passengers as part of the national Click It or Ticket Mobilization May 18-31. During last year’s campaign, Harrison police conducted 14 four-hour directed patrols targeting violators of seat belt laws and, during those 56 enforcement hours, issued 70 tickets for seat belt violations, HPD logs show. If a seller is confronted with two offers of the same dollar amount, the most qualified buyer should be chosen. Of course, a cash buyer trumps all others in this respect. Otherwise, if the two competing buyers both require financing, the seller should check to see if one, both, or neither has been “pre-qualified” or “pre-approved.” Getting pre-qualified is the initial step in the mortgage process. Since it is based only on the information that the person seeking the loan has provided to the lender, a pre-qualified buyer doesn’t have the same status as a pre-approved buyer,
who has a conditional commitment in writing for an exact loan amount. The pre-approved buyer poses less of a risk to the seller. When looking to purchase real estate, having a pre-approval letter from a lending institution can make the difference when sellers view your offer. The hotel will supplement the development of a 35acre mixed-use project that Advance plans to assemble in a joint venture with partner DeBartolo Development that will feature 1,000 luxury apartments and 20,000 square feet of retail on three blocks adjoining the Red Bull Arena. “The addition of AC Hotels by Marriott to the Riverbend District will be a key component in the continued development and enhancement of a dynamic destination in Harrison,” said Peter Cocoziello, president of Advance Realty. Panasonic Corp. of North America has moved into a new technology center that Advance developed in the
Riverbend District. This building houses Panasonic’s engineering offices, a lab and testing space. AC Hotels is one of 19 brands in the Marriott International global portfolio and currently there are more than 75 AC Hotels spread through Spain, Italy, Portugal and France. Its first American facility was built in New Orleans last November. More than 50 additional such hotels are expected to open during the next three years in the U.S. and Latin America. Harrison’s 250-acre waterfront redevelopment area represents 32% of the town’s 1.2 square miles. The town’s master plan calls for the transformation of the area over the next decade.

Have you seen these people? Nutley PD is appealing to the public for help in finding a “smash and grab” who broke into a car and a home burglar. Police provided these details about the apparently unrelated incidents: On May 7, at 1:30 a.m., police responded to the Nutley Diner on Centre St. on a report of criminal mischief to an auto. Police were told that someone had thrown a brick through the window of the vehicle and had removed the owner’s iPad, personal items and two handbags. A check of surveillance footage showed a suspect in the area, described as a black male, about 5-feet-eight, with a beard and glasses, wearing a dark colored T-shirt, camouflage shorts and sneakers, who, according to police, later sold the same iPad at a BP gas station in Newark. THEFTS from On Wednesday, ringleader Michael J. Troncone, 34, of Blairstown, pleaded guilty to second-degree theft before Bergen County Superior Court Judge Eugene Austin, Hoffman reported. The plea agreement calls for Troncone to serve eight years in state prison. The state’s Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor (OIFP) said the police departments in Lyndhurst, New Providence and Hanover had “tipped it off to a pattern of thefts.” With the assistance of local and state detectives, OIFP gathered video evidence that allegedly shows Troncone and a coconspirator, Marc Fucetola, 38, also of Blairstown, stealing equipment from construction sites during late evening or early morning hours. Lyndhurst’s lead investigator on the case, Det. Michael Lemanowicz, told The Observer that the local crime apparently occurred
on a Sunday morning. According to Hoffman’s office, the thieves would drive to a site, hook up a trailered piece of equipment and drive off with it in tow. The OIFP used remotelyoperated surveillance cameras, tracking devices and digital forensics to solve the crimes. After gathering evidence, officers executed search warrants in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and recovered at least 21 pieces of heavy equipment. In addition to the 2005 Caterpillar 232B Skid-Steer taken from Lyndhurst, these included: • a Takeuchi miniexcavator with an approximate value of $65,000; • a John Deere compact excavator, $58,100; • five additional SkidSteers, total approximate value $103,000; • an ATV, $10,243; • a $24,895 generator; • a $38,000 leaf vacuum; • two John Deere mowers, and • several trailers,

including enclosed and flatbed trailers. Troncone and Fucetola were arrested and charged with the thefts in October. A third suspect, Craig Slaaen, 40, of Livingston, was also arrested in October and charged with seconddegree receiving stolen property. The cases against Fucetola and Slaaen are pending. Lemanowicz was among the detectives from various departments who were cited for their assistance in the case. The thefts “threatened the livelihood of many small contractors and builders in New Jersey and delayed projects that were in the process of completion,” Hoffman said. “Given that this equipment was insured, the cost of this theft was not just borne by the contractors, its burden was carried by all those participate in the insurance market...” said Insurance Fraud Prosecutor Ronald Chillemi.

pedestrian fatalities has risen recently and now accounts for 27% of all fatalities. Between 2001 and 2009, there were 1,356 pedestrian fatalities in New Jersey; in 2009 alone there were 6,026 pedestrians injured in traffic. In April 2010, New Jersey amended the state crosswalk laws requiring drivers to “stop and stay stopped for a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk.” The law also specifies the responsibilities of pedestrians and sets out language stating that “no pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impossible for the driver to yield.” Pedestrians are also required to “obey pedestrian signals and use crosswalks at signalized intersections.” Pedestrian violators face a $54 fine.

The Lyndhurst Police Department will be out in full force over the next several months enforcing the New Jersey law requiring motor vehicles to stop and stay stopped for a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk. Some of this enforcement will be done with the use of plainclothes officers as ‘’decoys’’ within the crosswalks. The goal of this program is primarily to educate drivers. But, drivers beware -motorists who violate the law are liable for up to a $200 fine, two driver’s license points, 15 days community service, and insurance surcharges. This type of enforcement is taking place statewide and for good reason, the department notes. Sabor Latin Bistro brings South Beach to the shores of the Hudson
Photos courtesy Sabor Latin Bistro
By Kevin Canessa Observer Correspondent NORTH BERGEN – If you want all that South Beach Miami has to offer — excellent food, tremendous nightlife, incredible dancing — but don’t exactly have the means or the time to travel 1,500 miles south, fret not. That’s because just a few miles away, in North Bergen right near the Hudson River, Sabor Latin Bistro has all South Beach has to offer [okay, their beaches aren’t there, but you get the point] at a much more affordable price. Located on River Road, Sabor Latin Bistro, partly owned by Fernando Lopez, recently underwent a massive renovation. In addition to a much larger bar, the restaurant, which also serves as a catering hall, can hold as many as 250 patrons indoors and there’s also seating for up to 80 outdoor diners.
Lopez says the renovations were necessary because as word of mouth spread about the eatery, the restaurant needed more room to accommodate its expanding clientele. “Initially, we were what I like to call a small gem,” Lopez said. “But when the demand grew, we knew we had to have a bigger space. And now we’re two times the size we once were.” And extending the amount of space has led to more dancing. Every Friday and Saturday night, after patrons have a tremendous meal [we’ll get into the food shortly], they can hit the dance floor and move to Latino favorites, including Latin Jazz, modern salsa and old-school salsa. “The demand was there, too,” Lopez said. “People were coming in to eat our great food, but there wasn’t enough space for dancing. Now there
definitely is.” Lopez says Sabor caters to all generations of people, but predominantly, you’ll find the crowd to include a lot of people in their 30s to their late 50s. “Because of that, there’s a lot of energy in the place,” Lopez said. “It’s a very happening place. It’s SoBe on the Hudson. It’s lively. You come in, have a great meal, escape reality for a while and dance until 2 a.m.” But before the dancing is the food. Unlike many other Latino restaurants that have food from just one geographical location, Sabor’s cuisine is different. Instead, you’ll find all kinds of specialties, from the Caribbean to many parts of Latin America including Central and South America. “Usually, it’s one or the other,” Lopez said. “But not with us. Our food is from all over the globe. And we take
great pride in that.” On the dinner menu, you’ll find anything from grilled skirt tacos, a Mexican favorite, to grilled shrimp to skirt steak. What’s more, outdoor diners enjoy views of New York City’s skyline off in the distance. If it’s a banquet hall you’re looking for — be it for a wedding, a bar mitzvah or a First Communion -- any special occasion, really — Sabor has the space for it. (For a crowd of 250, the guests would be required to rent the entire restaurant.) So whether it’s a night out for a fantastic dinner, or if you have a desire to dance for hours on end or, if you’re looking for a great venue for a private party, Sabor will, indeed, bring South Beach right to you … in Hudson County. And you won’t have to even step foot on an airplane. “There’s not much that we

can’t do,” Lopez said. “We pride ourselves on knowing we’re a family-style establishment. People of all ages love it here, and we hope anyone who may not have heard about us before from outside the area will give us a try. They won’t be disappointed.” Sabor Latin Bistro is located at 8809 River Road, North Bergen. Lunch is served Monday to Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dinner is served Monday to Wednesday from 5 to 10 p.m., Thursday from 5 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 4:30 to 10 p.m. Sunday brunch is available from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. A Caribbean sunset menu is offered weekdays from 4 to 7:30 p.m. and a late-night menu is available Thursday to Saturday until 1 a.m. Happy Hour takes place Monday to Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. For more information, call Sabor at 201-943-6366 or visit www.saborlatinbistro.com.

DOWNGRADE from In its report, Moody’s attributed the lower rating to the Kearny’s “deteriorating finances, negative cash balance net of tax anticipate note proceeds and high reliance on state aid.” It blamed the “negative outlook” on the town’s “negative financial trend and increasingly negative cash position.” “We’re obviously disappointed in the reduced rating,” said Mayor Alberto Santos, “but it doesn’t come as a surprise.” Santos said that Kearny expected to be targeted for downgrading as one of the municipalities that receives transitional aid from the state and participates in the state’s qualified bond program. But part of that action, Santos said, is also a reflection of the state’s own revenue shortfall this year. Still, Santos conceded that Kearny has suffered from a “cash liquidity issue” which has prompted the town to issue tax anticipation notes to get it through times when cash is low. And he acknowledged that the town has been saddled
with “significant” obligations for the payment of water bills and employee health insurance and pension costs. Another sore point for Moody’s was that, “Kearny’s fund balance [surplus] has declined steadily in recent years as management has chosen to draw down reserves in lieu of raising taxes or materially reducing expenditures.” Because of cash flow shortages, “Kearny issued $10 million in tax anticipation notes in each of the past two years,” Moody’s reported. A 1% interest rate on the notes cost the town an added $100,000 each year, Firozvi said, “but with a $75 million budget, it’s just the cost of doing business.” “The bottom line,” Firozvi said, “is you don’t have much reserves and a diminished surplus and that’s when we have to do anticipation notes.” Those shortfalls, Moody’s said, the town has blamed on “a timing problem related to certain state aid payments and to delayed tax payments due to late adoption of budgets. The town is considering modifying its estimated tax bill system in a way which would considerably reduce or even eliminate reliance on [borrow-

ing].” Up to now, Moody’s said, “market access [selling shortterm notes] has not been an issue for the town, but a disruption in the town’s ability to secure [tax anticipation] notes would pose a significant risk to financial operations.” Firozvi remains hopeful that it can successfully package a bond sale later this year to convert $23 million in temporary notes issued during the past three to four years for water and sewer improvements, purchase of equipment
and police vehicles – together with recent obligations for acquisition of land for the Dukes St. pump station and W. Bennett Ave. water infrastructure upgrades – to permanent financing. To do that, the town will need to get permission from the state Local Finance Board, Firozvi said. For past bond sales, the town has been paying an interest rate of about 1%, but the reduced credit rating could push that up a bit unless other factors – like the Federal Reserve
13
raising interest rates – weigh in, he said. As of the end of 2014, the town was carrying on its books about $15 million in water utility debt plus an additional $46 million in general obligation debt for a total of about $61 million. Santos said the town should be better able to absorb – and gradually retire that debt – as its ratables start to climb with new projects like Vermela Crossing, a residential development at Schuyler and Bergen Aves., begin to come on line.

In December 2013, the township designated David A. Mack Properties LLC of Southport, Conn., redeveloper of the Roche site but Mack – who reportedly
wanted to build residential units on the site – eventually withdrew. Tulfra President Sonny Jumani told The Observer last week, “We’re super
excited – we like the opportunity a lot. We’re bullish about Essex County and Belleville.” But Jumani declined to provide details about the
Tulfra has real estate track record Tulfra Realty, the Rochelle Park firm tapped by Belleville to convert the dormant Roche Diagnostic property to a vibrant ratable, lists its primary business as “real estate management and the development of industrial buildings, land and industrial condominiums” in suburban northern New Jersey. Tulfra appears to be a shorthand combination of the names of the company’s cochairmen, S. Lloyd Tulp and Salvatore V. Frassetto. Sonny Jumani was named president of the company in January 2015.
Tulfra’s website says the company has a portfolio of about 4 million square feet of properties comprising more than 50 buildings with a tenant base of “200 private and public companies.” “Tulfra principals buy industrial buildings and land in northern New Jersey …” that can include land with “environmental issues of any kind …,” the website says. Kevin Welsh, senior vice president of CBRE, a global leader in real estate services, characterized Tulfra as “a leading real estate development company. They have in-
credible experience and have been highly successful. We’ve sold things to and for them and I have the utmost respect for them.” CBRE represented Tulfra in the sale of two multi-tenant industrial buildings totaling 288,469 square feet in Clifton and Tulfra now has available 19 other properties for sale or lease including another Clifton industrial property – the 201,000 square feet former Glaxo Building (65 Industrial St. South) – which Tulfra teamed with The Hampshire Companies to acquire and which has been the benefi-

If Hampshire ends up participating with Tulfra in some capacity on the Roche deal, Welsh said that Belleville would be seeing “two extremely capable real estate firms” in action. Hampshire is a 50-year-old Morristown-based real estate investment firm with $2.5 billion in assets whose portfolio contains nearly 260 properties totaling 23 million square feet spread among 28 states. In February 2015, Hampshire sold a 112,270 square foot industrial warehouse building on Huyler St. in South Hackensack to Park Avenue Motor Corp. and in November 2011 it combined with Tulfra in a joint venture to sell a 36,000 square foot industrial building on E. Linden Ave. in Linden to Joma Realty. “They’re in the major leagues,” he said. Hampshire and Tulfra working together “will be of significant benefit to Belleville.” – Ron Leir

QP hires Fontan as new girls’ basketball coach The next phase of Jiovanny Fontan’s basketball life just happened by a stroke of luck. The former University of Southern California point guard, who first gained notoriety as a standout floor leader for St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, just happened to be surfing the Internet recently, when he stumbled across the story about Queen of Peace and the problems in hiring a new girls’ basketball coach. “I was intrigued,” said Fontan, who just graduated from USC two years ago and spent the last couple of years playing professional basketball in Puerto Rico and Paraguay. “So I decided to make a few phone calls.” Fontan called his friend, Bilal Dicon, who played for QP a few years ago before heading off to Providence. “I reached out to Bilal to see if the position had been filled,” Fontan said. “He made a few calls for me and got me a meeting with the athletic director (Ed Abromaitis) and the principal (John Tonero).” All the 24-year-old Fontan needed to impress the QP powers-
that-be was that one meeting, because Fontan was hired last week as the new girls’ basketball coach, ending all the controversy surrounding the open coaching slot. Fontan was one of the most central figures in the award-winning documentary about the St. Anthony basketball program, “The Street Stops Here,” which was telecast on both ESPN and the MSG Network. He spent two years at Fordham University after graduating from St. Anthony and averaged 15.3 points per game as a freshman. During his sophomore year at Fordham, Fontan suffered a torn ACL that forced him to miss almost the entire season. He then transferred to USC and played for the Trojans for two years, leading USC into the NCAA Tournament in 2011 as a junior. Fontan tried his hand at pro basketball, but then remembered words that his coach at USC, Kevin O’Neill, told him. “He said something that always stuck with me,” Fontan said of O’Neill. “He said, ‘Bassee VIEW page

But then we made our run.” “I don’t know why that happens,” said Penaherrera, who also was a key member of the Blue Tide soccer team that won the NJSIAA Group I state championship last fall. “We lose the first few points, but then after that, we get used to playing that game and we play better. CHAMPS from apprehension when the Blue Tide fell behind. “I’m always crazy and nervous with the first set,” Landy said. “But once we get through that, all the weight comes off our backs.” Landy said that Bayonne did whatever the Bees could do to handle Namiotko, who earlier in the season collected the 500th kill of the season. “They stopped him,” Landy said of Namiotko, one of the state’s premier players. “They triple blocked him and he only had three kills.” It meant that Penaherrera had to step it up a little. “He had nine kills, 15 service points and seven digs,” Landy said. “The kid was all over the place for us. Once
we got started, it wasn’t close.” “It’s an amazing feeling,” Penaherrera said. “I’ve been playing volleyball for four years and this was the first time we won it. It’s special because it never happened before. That was the goal this year. We wanted to win. We all worked so hard for this. It shows that the hard work pays off.” Landy had a sense that the Blue Tide could muster a championship-like season. “We were in pretty good spirits coming into the season,” Landy said. “We had a lot of guys coming back with good varsity experience. We had some guys who did their work playing for club teams over the summer. We had a very good crew.” The Blue Tide improved
to 25-2 with the county championship win. The Blue Tide defeated Kearny, Dickinson and then Bayonne in the tourney. “They were all pretty big teams and we pretty much dominated,” Landy said. “It’s the kind of season that you don’t want to end.” It’s the best single-season record in the school’s volleyball history. The Blue Tide hasn’t lost a match since dropping consecutive matches to Southern Regional and Fair Lawn last month. “Those are the kinds of teams we want to play,” Landy said. “They were No. 2 and No. 3 in the state at the time. We definitely turned it on after playing those two. I think the key is that we play so well togeth-

The Blue Tide received a first round bye and will play Thursday against the winner of Dickinson and Science Park. “A win like this definitely boosts our confidence,” Landy said. “We have to see how we can do in the states.” Landy has traditionally taken his team to watch the NJSIAA finals every year. “We don’t want to be spectators this year,” Landy said. “We want to be on the court with everyone watching us. I just want to keep on riding this for as long as we could.” “It’s an amazing feeling, winning the county,” Penaherrera said. “I loved winning with the soccer team, but this is really amazing, because not a lot of people expected it.”

INDEPENDENT VIEW
Because the ability to drive preserves seniors’ independence, drivers over age 65 should do everything they can to preserve their driving skills, including having their vision checked. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that those aged 65 years and older have their eyes examined once every one to two years even if they experience no issues. An exam can determine if eyeglass prescriptions need to be updated and whether there are any signs of disease that could compromise vision and hamper driving ability. For instance, cataracts can make objects appear blurry and/ or make vision more sensitive to the glare of oncoming headlights, and glaucoma decreases peripheral vision, making it harder to see objects away from the direct line of sight. We encourage seniors to have
an eye examination at least once a year. A multitude of diseases and conditions can be diagnosed from the eye. We are always ready to assist you and your family with vision needs and answer any questions concerning eye health. We’re located at 20 Park Avenue, Lyndhurst, where we believe everyone should have a professional eye examination on a regular basis to protect the priceless miracle of sight. Please call 201 896-0096 (our optical shop 201 896-0007) to schedule an appointment; we are currently accepting new patients. Visit us at www.delucavision.com. Come in and visit our optical shop. ketball can be a career for you. Coaching can be a career.’ I remembered that.” After his playing days were over, Fontan returned to his native New Jersey. He then got involved coaching his younger sister Jiann on her AAU team, the New Jersey Sparks. “As soon as I got home, I got the chance to coach my sister and I really liked it,” Fontan said. “It opened my eyes to the changes that have been made to girls’ basketball. It inspired me to want to coach girls’ basketball. I fell in love with it.” Fontan, who is currently working with Hoboken Recreation, thought that QP offered a big-time chance to break into high school basketball. “It’s a great opportunity,” said Fontan, who realized that the Golden Griffins won only one game last winter. “I’m not necessarily accustomed to losing, but it’s a great first step for me. I think the program has a lot of po-
tential, a lot of room to grow with me. I’m stepping in new from Day One and can set the foundation for the years to come.” There is only one way to go when you inherit a one-win program. Fontan was the point guard on the celebrated undefeated St. Anthony team featured in the documentary, winning the mythical national championship in 2008, a team that also featured former Brooklyn Nets guard Tyshawn Taylor (Kansas) as well as Mike Rosario (Rutgers then Florida), Travon Woodall (Pitt) and Dominic Cheek (Villanova). In fact, before he decided to take the position at QP, Fontan reached out to legendary Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley, who mentored Fontan in high school at St. Anthony. “I spoke with Coach Hurley before the interview,” Fontan said. “It had been a while since I had spoken with him, but right away, it was like I was back at practice. I told him that I really wanted
to coach girls’ basketball. I could sense the energy that was coming from Coach Hurley. I have so much respect for that man.” Fontan believes that he was groomed to eventually become a coach from his days at St. Anthony. “I think from Day One there, I was ready,” Fontan said. “My senior year, I was named the captain and the starting point guard. That was a place of honor. Coach Hurley said he never named a captain before, maybe the
last one was Bobby (the coach’s son and former Duke All-American, now the head coach at Arizona State). Added Fontan, “Coach Hurley saw that in me back then. I told him that I wanted to go into coaching, but wanted to go on the girls’ side and he was very supportive of me. I had that conversation with Coach Hurley about the future, and after that, it was big for me to have him give me the encouragement to do it.” So Fontan feels like he’s ready for the challenge

ahead. “When I was the point guard, I had to be the coach on the floor,” Fontan said. “So to me, coaching was natural. This is a great opportunity for me. I’m going to meet the girls this week, then I’m going to try to build relationships with the parents in the area. I’m excited about this challenge. I know I’m ready.” It seems as if QP has hired the right man to take the girls’ program at the school to the next level. The pedigree is certainly there.

In fact, Amber is currently a senior and a member of the Blue Tide softball program. “Having my sisters as good athletes really motivated me, because they were all good,” O’Donnell said. “I wanted to be just like them.” It appears as if O’Donnell is reaching that status, both at home and with the Blue Tide. “It’s getting to that point and that really excites me,” O’Donnell said. O’Donnell, who is also the starting quarterback for the Blue Tide during the football season, got a little taste of varsity baseball last year as a freshman. “He came up late in the year when our third baseman got hurt,” Harrison head baseball
coach Jairo Mendez said. “He finished the season with us at third base and did a good job. I thought coming into this season that we already had our third baseman.” “It definitely gave me confidence coming into this season,” said the sophomore O’Donnell. “I always knew I could do it, but I had to work harder now because it was my time to shine. I went to all the offseason workouts to get ready. I did whatever I could to become better. I always keep adapting myself, so this way, I can get better for the next game.” Mendez had a feeling that O’Donnell would have a breakout season this year. “He was bigger, more mature, smarter,” Mendez said. “After seeing him last year to continued next page

this year, I knew he was a better player.” Mendez inserted O’Donnell as his leadoff hitter and it was a marriage made in heaven. “He’s been filling that spot well,” Mendez said. “I think having him at leadoff really picked up his game. He’s being patient at the plate and he’s attacking fastballs, especially early in the count. He jumps on those. He had some struggles early on, but he didn’t get down on himself and stayed with it.” Last week, O’Donnell had a game that most players simply dream about. Against Bergen Charter, O’Donnell went 5-for-5, including a home run and a double, with six RBI. He also scored six runs. “I didn’t think I’d be able to do that good,” the humble
O’Donnell said. O’Donnell followed up his monstrous game with two hits in three at-bats against Dwight-Englewood. He also had a key RBI in the Blue Tide’s win over Linden. For his efforts, O’Donnell has been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week for the past week. O’Donnell doesn’t know what sport he’s better at. He will more than likely remain as the team’s starting quarterback this fall. “I’m always trying to get better in both sports,” O’Donnell said. “I just want to get better and better.” Mendez believes that O’Donnell has limitless possibilities. “He definitely has a lot of potential,” Mendez said of O’Donnell, who is now batting

.326 with two homers and 13 RBI for the season – half of that production all coming in the one game. “He certainly has a bright future,” Mendez said. “This big game was a little bit of a surprise, but I thought he had it in him. I hope he keeps that approach of feeling confident.” Mendez said that he’s used
O’Donnell in several different roles this season, trying to find him a permanent role. “He played second base, third base and he’s our backup catcher,” Mendez said. “Eventually, I’d like to see him pitch a little. He’s a strong kid who has the arm. He can play anywhere on the field. I absolutely like the idea he wants to
play anywhere we need him. He’s really maturing into a good player for us.” O’Donnell has to be a positive role model as well. After all, he has a little sister, Hayley, who is an aspiring athlete as well. It’s definitely all in the family in the O’Donnell household, just with more of a female touch.

During May and June, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority’s (NJSEA) Flyway Gallery will host an exhibit by Chang “Paul” Kang, shining a light on the everyday wonders of the environment around us. The show, “Homage to Mother Nature,” runs through June 20. A closing reception is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. The Flyway Gallery is located in the Meadowlands Environment Center in DeKorte Park. Works by the artist, a native of Korea and now a California resident, have been displayed in galleries throughout America and his home country, including the 33rd annual Grand Art Exhibition of Korea in 2014.“Homage to Mother Nature” is sponsored by the Rutherford United Methodist
Church. The church’s pastor, The Rev. Dr. BJ Kim, has known Kang for more than 50 years. “Paul Kang’s art represents and continuously carries the message of the beauty of the Earth,” Kim said. “His work shines with hope for our future.” For more information on Kang, visit www.ckangart.com. Flyway Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. The NJSEA includes the former N.J. Meadowlands Commission. PASSAIC VALLEY WATER COMMISSION NOTICE TO NORTH ARLINGTON CUSTOMERS The Passaic Valley Water Commission is committed to providing our customers with high quality water and service. As part of our on-going improvement program, we are cleaning, lining, testing and disinfecting approximately 1,900 linear feet of 6-inch diameter water main along Park Avenue from Schuyler Ave to Rutherford Pl. Work will begin on May 26, 2015 and will be completed by July 2015. Please note that parking and access may be restricted for limited times at these locations. We will make every effort to maintain your normal water service at all times. If your property is connected to the water main being replaced, you will receive water service through a temporary main. Water service to all customers will be maintained throughout the project and will be safe for use. There may be, however, some unavoidable water discoloration and low pressure at any time during the project period. Customers are therefore cautioned to determine if the water is clear before washing clothes (or any other processing) as staining may occur. PLEASE WATCH YOUR STEP Our Contractor must dig in the street in order to install the underground water mains. Temporary mains will also be run along the curb. Please watch your step and ask your children not to play in the work areas. INCONVENIENCE IS TEMPORARY – IMPROVEMENT IS PERMANENT We understand that this project may cause some inconvenience. We will make every effort to minimize the disturbance and will work closely with local police and officials to reduce traffic problems. IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS Please call our customer service number at (973) 340-4300 during regular working hours. During off hours and on the weekends, please call our contractor’s emergency contact number at 201-304-2938. Thank you for your patience and cooperation. These improvements will help us to continue to give you dependable water service.

GUILTY from trial while the lone defense witness took up only a halfhour. Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office investigators concluded that the motive for the killing was “retaliation over an ongoing dispute between alleged street gang members and members of the victim’s family,” but they noted that Colon “was not believed to be part of that dispute at all” and that her death was “the tragic
consequence” of the feud. Probably the most telling moment of the trial came on the first day of testimony when Colon’s brother, now age 9, was asked if the man who shot his sister was in the courtroom. “The boy, who had identified the suspect from a photo array he was shown two days after the shooting, stood up and pointed to Martinez while breaking down, crying,” Rozzi recalled.
That, Rozzi told The Observer, “was the most dramatic episode I’ve seen in my 20 years as a prosecutor.” Martinez was arrested Jan. 19, 2013, two days after the shooting, in Pennsylvania on an unrelated open warrant from the Keystone State and was later charged by Hudson County with murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm for unlawful purpose. Several weeks later, the
HCPO arrested Kyeeth L. Smith, 21, of Willingboro; Lamar D. Farrar, 22, of East Orange; and Eric L. Shelton, 19, of Orange, on various charges, all in connection with the Kearny murder case. Hours before the crime, Kearny police responded to the area near the victim’s home on a report of a street fight involving some of the victim’s relatives. Colon was not involved in the fight, the HCPO said. That inci-

dent resulted in the arrest of Belleville resident Edwin Mendez, whose daughter was living with Colon’s mother, on the charge of unlawful possession of a machete. During the trial, Farrar testified that Martinez (who, according to Rozzi, was a “good friend” of Mendez) asked him, Shelton and Smith to accompany him to the Belgrove Drive location “to send a message.” Farrar testified that when they got to the house, Smith waited in the car while he, Shelton and Martinez walked up to the second-floor apartment, then Martinez forced open the door. Farrar said he was standing behind Martinez when he heard a shot, saw Colon lying on the bed and then ran downstairs with the others. Later, Rozzi said, HCPO investigators found what ballistics experts later identified as a .380-caliber shell casing and spent bullet inside the victim’s bedroom. Rozzi said Farrar admitted taking the gun used in the shooting to an apartment in East Orange but the weapon was never recovered. – Ron Leir

KPD from When approached by Arnesman and backup Officers Chris Levchak, Jay Ward and Daniel Esteves, police said Smelly became “defiant and confrontational,” tried to push past the cops and finally had to be forced to the ground and
handcuffed. Kearny EMS was summoned, but Smelly reportedly refused medical treatment. He was taken to HQ and charged with obstruction, assault and resisting arrest. ••• Det. Ray Lopez, on patrol at Maple and Patterson Sts. at 7 p.m., saw a bicyclist “lurking”
Tune up for karaoke next week at W.H.A.T. The West Hudson Arts and Theater Co. (W.H.A.T.) will hold its first-ever Broadway Karaoke Open Mic Night Fundraiser, Friday, May 29, at 7:30 p.m.at its theater in residence at the First Lutheran Church, 65 Oakwood Ave., Kearny. “We love engaging the community with what we do, and since we are a performing arts organization, karaoke with a Broadway theme seemed like a perfect fit for a fundraiser,” said W.H.A.T.’s newly named vice president, Noelle Haefner. W.H.A.T. hopes the event will help underwrite the cost of productions as it readies its sixth season this fall. “We need to remind the community that we rely upon the generous support of local residents and businesses
alike to sustain both our stage productions and well as our W.H.A.T. Education Department programs,” Haefner noted. With Broadway now encompassing everything from classic musicals like “Cabaret” and “A Chorus Line” to the sounds of Motown and songs by Carole King (“Beautiful”) to the music of Green Day in “American Idiot,” there is something for everyone to enjoy. So tone up those vocal chords and loosen those lips: It’s time to raise some money for your community theater! Suggested donation is $15 per person, $10 for seniors and students. Additional donations are welcome. Tickets are available online at www. whatco.org or by calling 201467-8624.
Experienced handler sought for Milo Milo (IDI#15371) is a 6-month-old hound mix. Volunteers at the Bergen County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center say the pup’s owner surrendered him because he is too noisy. Although Milo does make himself known, training can modify this behavior. Because his brain is still a sponge, it is necessary that his handler(s) begin training as soon as he’s taken home. Milo also has some serious issues with sharing: He will guard anything he deems valuable. Due to this, the shelter is looking for an experienced household, with no children. Many volunteers have been working with Milo and say he has progressed nicely. He knows sit and gives paw. He also loves to play fetch and drops the ball for his handler to throw it again.
near a parked 1997 BMW and then try to open the right rear window, police said. The individual then went into a backyard, was confronted as he was leaving and could offer no explanation for having entered the property, police said. Jeremy Postel, 18, of Newark, was charged with criminal
trespass and attempted burglary. Postel was also found to be the subject of an NCIC probation-violation warrant from the Essex County Sheriff›s Office. ••• At 8:15 p.m., vice officers witnessed Murat Chich, 50, of Kearny, apparently en-
gage in a drug transaction. They confronted him at New Lawn Ave., and he reportedly turned over one plastic bag of suspected cocaine. He was charged with possession of the drug and paraphernalia and was released on summonses. – Karen Zautyk
