By Ron Leir Observer Correspondent HARRISON – The year was 1840: William Henry Harrison had just been elected president and in April the New Jersey Legislature created the Township of Harrison from part of what was then the southern portion of Bergen County. In 1852, residents of the northern part of the township opted to return to Bergen, forming Union Township, and in 1867 the present-day Kearny was carved out. What remains was incorporated as the Town of Harrison in 1869. But it is the initial creation that the town fathers are taking their cue from in marking Harrison’s 175th anniversary during a three-day period next month. Harrison Fest, as the organizers have dubbed it, will take place during the weekend of Sept. 18 to 20. The event will start with a celebratory Mass at Holy Cross Church – (the parish itself is observing its 150th year anniversary on Nov. 1) – on Friday, Sept. 18, in the evening, at a time to be announced, followed by a Gala dinner featuring international food stations in the Holy Cross School building’s banquet hall. On Saturday, Sept. 19, and see FEST page

One field facelift starts, 2nd in wings By Ron Leir Observer Correspondent KEARNY –
C
onversion of Veteran’s Memorial Field off Belgrove Drive in Kearny, from natural grass to artificial turf, with associated improvements, was slated to start this week. Town Recreation Director Ralph Cattafi said the Board of Education has graciously agreed to let the town use the Franklin School field for youth football practices and the high school field for games this fall so there should be no disruption of that program during the construction. Applied Landscape Technologies of Montville, awarded the $1,522,500 contract on July 14, is expected to finish the job by Thanksgiving, Cattafi said. Aside from the turfing, Cattafi said the work will involve these improvements: • adding a new lacrosse field. • creating an additional Little League diamond overlapping the existing football field and the lacrosse field. • shifting one of the Little League scoreboards to deepen that field’s outfield fences, from the existing 180 feet to 200 feet. • changing a Little League field dimensions to provide 50 feet between the pitcher’s mound and home and 70 feet between bases, pegged to the abilities of 13- and 14-yearolds. “It’s a growing trend around the country,” Cattafi said. • installing temporary fencing for both softball and the new Little League field and permanent fencing for the

Meanwhile, on another recreation front, the town’s consulting engineers were tweaking plans for a massive facelift and turfing of the Gunnell Oval Recreational Complex off Schuyler Ave. following a July 31 public hearing on the $21.4 million redevelopment project which has yet to go out to bid. At the hearing, homeowners along E. Midland Ave., which borders the Oval to the south, expressed misgivings about the plans. Joseph Toth, Steven
Wood and Peg Siegle all had different concerns about the efficacy of the plans and their potential impact on property and wildlife. But Joseph Vuich and David Juzmeski, representing Neglia Engineering, the town’s consultants, sought to reassure the owners that there were sufficient safeguards being taken to prevent harmful impacts to both properties and animals. Neglia representative Joseph Vuich said the Oval project – which will be financed by a combination of federal

and state funding sources – will require a “significant” infusion of clean fill and cap “to minimize potential exposure to historic fill materials present on-site,” along with storm water management controls designed to “minimize the impact of frequent flooding” in the area “due to the influence of the tidal Kearny Marsh.” He said a new storm water collection system would be installed at the north end of the Oval to flow to a drainage facility “for overflow protection,” and thence, to a pump station at the property’s south end for discharge over the Conrail property into the marsh. And the intention is to “elevate the site above the flood plain.” But Toth disputed the assumption, reflected on current FEMA maps, that the Oval area is located in a flood zone and claimed that in the past, when some E. Midland homes got excess water, it was the result of an ineffective combined sanitary-storm sewer system. “In the Sandy event, the water receded within 24 hours. The Oval doesn’t flood,” he said. “If you’re going to be collecting excess rain water, will that push the creek water towards our houses?” “I don’t see a need for a $21 million project,” Toth said. Further, Toth said, “we get a lot of animals, fox, deer, geese, which we like. How’s this project going to impact them?” As for the geese poop, he added, “how are you going to clean it?” Juzmeski of Neglia said that, “the improvements shouldn’t impact you. man wanted on a child-neglect warrant ended up in the Hudson County Jail last week after arresting officers found a handgun in his East Newark apartment, Kearny police reported. At 5:40 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, Kearny Det. Michael Farinola, conducting a cooperative investigation with the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, spotted 37-year-old Stuart Bradley on Grant Ave. in East Newark. Bradley, police said, was wanted on the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office warrant. During a consent search of his residence, investigators reportedly found the weapon. Bradley was remanded to the jail on $100,000 bail on the warrant and on a charge of “certain persons not to have weapons.” The latter, police said, was because of “his extensive criminal record,” including “several felony convictions.” ••• Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following: July 31 At 5:30 p.m., Vice detectives reportedly observed a man sitting on a stoop near Devon St. and Midland Ave., puffing on a glass pipe -- which, Chief John Dowie explained, “is a familiar way to smoke crack cocaine.” After confirming their suspicions, police said, they arrested Douglas Welfl, 29, of Kearny, for possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia and for being under the influence of a CDS. Aug. 4 At 1 a.m., a 21-year-old Kearny woman notified police that she was receiving text messages threatening her with bodily harm -- and death. Officer Derek Hemphill responded to her Schuyler Ave. residence, reviewed the texts, confirmed the threats and developed as a suspect Rosa Santiago, 21, of Newark. He also learned that San-

Confronted, she reportedly turned over 10 wax folds of heroin, stamped “Magoo,” and four vials of cocaine. She was charged with possession of the drugs and paraphernalia.
Aug. 6 Vice detectives, on the 100 block of Elm St. at 11:20 a.m., observed a 2004 Nissan being operated by Dionne Horton, 45, of Newark -- described as “a known narcotics offender.” The detectives, who

tiago might be in the area, driving a 2004 black Hyundai. Hemphill began a patrol, spotted the car (containing several people) within a block of the victim’s home and followed it down Laurel Ave. to Forest St., where he conducted an MV stop. Santiago was the driver, and she turned out to have a suspended license, police said. The officer also requested IDs from the passengers, one of whom – Natasha Echevarria, 24, of Kearny -- initially provided a fictitious name, police said. Echevarria and Santiago were allegedly co-conspirators in the texting and both were charged with making terroristic threats. Additionally, Echevarria was charged with hindering apprehension; Santiago, with driving while suspended and on an outstanding warrant from Newark. ••• Sgt. Charles Smith and Officer Pat Becker responded at 5:30 p.m. to citizens’ complaints of possible drug use taking place inside a Pennsylvania-registered black Honda on the 100 block of Dukes St. Its occupants, Kevin Gonzales-Narvarro, 19, of Passaic, and Jian Peralta, 18, of Kearny, were charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. GonzalesNarvarro also received an MV summons for operating a car while in possession of a CDS.

Incumbents are running unopposed in Kearny, North Arlington and Bloomfield. Harrison and East Newark have appointive school boards. In Lyndhurst, two of the
three incumbents – Ronald Grillo and Sherri Jarvis – are looking to retain their seats while Thomas DiMascio is not seeking re-election. There are four other candidates: former school trustee Josephine Malaniak, Joy Bliss, Scot Weaver and Chris Andrinopoulos Jr. Malaniak and Bliss are reportedly running as an informal alliance. Andrinopoulos is one of several petitioners calling for a charter study
referendum to be placed on the November ballot. The Belleville school board contest features incumbent Jeanne Lombardi, the board’s vice president, looking to retain her seat while incumbent Peter Zangari Jr. has opted not to run. Others in the race are: Thomas Grolimond, Nelson Berrera and Christine Lamparello. In Nutley, incumbents Deborah Russo and Ryan Kline, along with Salvatore Balsamo

OFFICERS from programs more active.” This summer, the Corps has offered music for kids ages 6 to 18 on Mondays, from 3 to 6 p.m., but when school resumes next month, the class will shift to Fridays, probably from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Youngsters are being introduced to brass band instruments, tambourine, recorder, music theory, singing and dancing. Seoyoung, a pianist, plays for the class. In the fall, Hwang said, “we plan to open an art class and we have been cleaning up our gym so we can have indoor soccer for the younger children, ages 5 to 10.” An existing ESL (English as a Second Language) class for adults, which meets Wednesdays and Thursdays, at 7 p.m., is continuing and a Citizenship class, in which 16 adults are enrolled, will meet Mondays, from 7 to 9 p.m. The Corps’ regular food pantry, open to low-income residents, is available Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 10 a.m. to noon, and its emergency pantry accepts walk-ins from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. And worship services are
still being held on Sundays at 10:45 a.m., with Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. “We are working closely with Division Headquarters and corporate sponsors to get funds for all programs,” Seoyoung said. Looking to further strengthen the Corps’ viability and provide for outreach to the community, the Lims are hoping to line up additional kettle workers for the Salvation Army’s traditional Christmas campaign. Their goal is to boost the usual 13 or 14 kettle stands in the Corps’ service area to as many as 20. “We will be standing, too,” Seoyoung said. The Lims credited members of the Corps’ Advisory Board with being supportive in helping orient them to their new community and in backing their goals for the Kearny Corps, which includes Harrison, East Newark, North Arlington and Lyndhurst in its service area. They will meet with the Advisory Board and Corps Council sometime next month and sketch out plans for the coming year at that time. KEEPING UP YOUR IMAGE
People have become so accustomed to posting and trading photographic images via e-mail, Facebook, and Instagram that they can hardly imagine doing without them. Sellers should keep this in mind if they hope to make a favorable impression on buyers with their online photos. According to a survey taken by a nationally known real estate website, an incredible 18 percent of buyers and sellers surveyed indicated that they wouldn’t even consider purchasing a property that did not have a listing with a photograph. In addition, the quality of the images matters. According to another online real estate company, homes with photos taken by a digital single-lens reflex camera garner an average of 61 percent
more views than other properties. Before you post pictures of your home, one of the most important things to do is to de-personalize it. The more personal stuff in your house, the less potential buyers can imagine themselves living there. Put about a third of your personal items in storage. This includes family photos and personal keepsakes. We have a successful history of helping sellers and buyers in your community. A vital part of today’s real estate industry is technology, and to that end we provide clients with state-of-the art web tools and marketing. To arrange an initial consultation, give us a call today. “Our success has been built one satisfied customer at a time.”

Get a horse! By Karen Zautyk o, I am not speaking about American Pharoah, although he has been in the headlines. (Congrats, Pharoah, on the recent Haskell win.) I am talking about your regular, run-of-themill equines. Society would benefit greatly were they to make a comeback. This occurred to me as I watched the news coverage of last week’s N.J. Turnpike closure, resulting from a fatal crash in Linden. The Pike at a dead stop for hours and hours and . . . Motorists were sunbathing on the shoulder of the highway, or having picnics. I think some may have planted and harvested gardens. Young children grew into adulthood. And it wasn’t just the Pike brought to a halt. Drivers desperately attempting to find alternate routes created traffic jams all over North Jersey well into the evening. You know something’s really wrong when you’re sitting in traffic on a clogged Harrison Ave. or Rt. 21 or Rt. 3 because of an accident in Linden. My modest proposal: Get
N
rid of the cars. Bring back the horses. Just think of all the advantages: 1) A resurrection of horse travel (single riders and carriages/buggies) would solve America’s oil problems immediately. 2) With less dependence on fossil fuels, global warming might be controlled. 3) Gas stations need not go out of business; they could be converted into stables. 4) Horses are quieter than cars. No more roaring engines, honking horns, screeching brakes. Only the soothing sounds of clip-clop, clip-clop and an occasional neigh. 5) Towns would save a fortune in winter, since there would be no need for rock salt. Of course, streets would still have to be plowed, for the sleighs. 6) No more stinky auto fumes. 7) Yes, there would be stinky manure all over, and some municipality would adopt a pick-up-after-yourhorse ordinance, but manure, when collected on a regular schedule, could be controlled.
And having been collected, it could be used as fertilizer (or perhaps converted into a biofuel?). 8) More fertilizer would be needed since we’d also need more farms for hay and straw and oats. 9) More farms would mean fewer McMansions. (Reference to the hideous homes now occupying what had been bucolic acreage in our state. Take a ride northwest sometime.) 10) The only motor vehicles allowed on the roads should be fire trucks/engines, ambu-

Millan is applying the theme of multi-culturalism to the Fest. Clerics from the town’s eight religious centers will be invited to participate in the Sept. 18 Mass. And the Gala will feature the presentation of 25 “Queens” from the community representing different countries and cultures and the crowning of a “Heritage Queen.” Also at the Gala, Millan said, “We are also going to honor the Businessman and Businesswoman of the Year, Man and Woman of the Year for their philanthropic efforts, Veteran of the Year and Family of the Year.” Gala tickets are currently priced at $50 and the hall can hold up to 360, he said. “The walls in the school banquet hall will be decorated
with historical photos contributed by each of the departments – police, fire, DPW and so forth – showing changes over the years,” Millan said. In the parade, led by the mayor as grand marshal, Millan said there will be three floats – to be built by students and staff from the local schools and transported by J. Supor & Son Trucking & Rigging of Kearny and Harrison – on which will ride the Heritage Queen, Family of the Year and Veteran of the Year. For the Saturday/Sunday street festival, Millan said that Library Park will be a focus for family-oriented activities and the municipal parking lot across from Washington School will be dedicated to programs for adults. Harrison Ave., between Patterson and Second Sts., will be closed to vehicular traffic that weekend and a variety of vendors, along with civic associations and nonprofits, will have booths stationed along the block, Millan said.

New technologies are boosting students’ grades Picture a college student studying for an upcoming exam. The learning experience, in turn, has become less static and more interactive. Beyond making learning more engaging, the materials are helping customize the learning experience for each student. The latest materials use artificial intelligence to focus on those areas where individual students need the most attention.
Professors can employ realtime monitoring to determine how individual students and whole classes perform, adjusting their lessons to better meet the needs of the class. They can also use these programs to communicate directly with specific students or with the entire class, making introductory-level classes -- which often have hundreds

Students using a digital learning platform increased their grades by one full letter, with more B students getting As, and more C students getting Bs, during an independent study of more than 700 students at six institutions, which was conducted by a member organization of the Association of American Publishers (AAP). THERE ARE STILL SOME REALLY GOOD PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD! I MET THREE OF THE BEST ON FRIDAY, JULY 31, 2015 On July 31, 2015, I was coming home from FoodTown when I had a bad trip and fell and went face down on the ground. At the time I didn’t know what I had tripped over, but when I got up, I couldn’t get my nose to stop bleeding and I had nothing to cover it with. I looked up and there was a lady coming towards me asking if I was alright – all I could ask was do you have any tissues, my nose is bleeding. She went to her car and as she was coming back to me with a bunch of tissues/napkins, two other ladies in a car stopped to see how I was; one also gave me more tissues to help me put under and over my bleeding nose. They tried to get me to go to the hospital, but all I could think of was that I had to get the groceries to my sister’s house, because I know she would be worried about me if I didn’t get back soon. I thanked them all for their help and the first lady got into her car. One of the ladies from the other car said she would walk me home and pull my cart for me. As she did this, the other lady in the car followed us to my sister’s house. I thanked both of them for their help and went into the house. I don’t even know the names of these three ladies who were so kind and selfless, as to stop going where they were heading in order to help me. I don’t know how to say enough about how they made me feel with their kindness. BUT, I will tell you that they really made me realize that there are “STILL WONDERFUL, CARING AND KIND PEOPLE LEFT IN THIS WORLD, AND, I MET THREE OF THE BEST on that Friday, July 31, 2015;

payment and at better terms. With HARP now extended through December 2016, homeowners across the country have more time to take advantage of this program to save money every month. If you purchased a home before June 2009, have little or no equity in your home but are current on your mortgage payment (meaning no 30-day-plus late payments in the last six months and no more than one in the past 12 months), and the loan is owned by Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae, you may be eligible to refinance your mortgage through HARP. More than 3.3 million Americans have taken advantage of HARP since 2009, saving them $200 on average per month. Here’s how you can take advantage of this program: • Gather your basic financial information before you contact your mortgage company. You’ll need: Your latest mortgage statements, including information on a second mortgage (if applicable); and your current income details (paystub or income tax return). • Find out if Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac owns your loan. In order to qualify for HARP, your loan must be owned by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. Contact your mortgage company or visit www.know-
youroptions.com/loanlookup or https://ww3.freddiemac. com/loanlookup/. If your loan is owned by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, ask your lender if it is an approved HARP lender. Be prepared to provide the information necessary to verify your current source of income. If your lender is not an approved HARP lender, find out who is near you on the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac websites. • Go through the application, approval and closing process. If your lender determines you qualify for HARP, they will guide you through the process. HARP has no appraisal requirements or loan-tovalue limits, so you can apply regardless of how far your home may have fallen in value. Without this program, qualifying for refinancing can be virtually impossible for homeowners who are underwater. Remember, the opportunity to get a HARP refinance expires December 31, 2016, and there is still time to take advantage of low mortgage rates. Make 2015 the year you take the step to save money on your home loan. Call your lender to apply now and begin to save. For more information, visit www.HARP.gov. –StatePoint

Kearny’s Meola returns as one of Red Bulls’ all-time best
SPORTS VIEW Contact Jim at Ogsmar@aol.com
QP grad Pettigrew heads to Drew as head of his class It’s very rare when a student/athlete graduates at the top of his or her graduating class. Usually, the role of valedictorian is played by someone who spends all of their free time in a library with their noses pressed against textbooks and encyclopedia. But that wasn’t the case with the valedictorian at Queen of Peace for the Class of 2015. Kearny resident Michael Pettigrew earned the distinction of being at the very top of the QP graduating class, while also excelling in both basketball and baseball for the Golden Griffins. “For me, academics always came first,” said the recently graduated Pettigrew, who is headed off to Drew University later this month. “I love playing sports, but I wanted to make sure I was going to a good academic school. I would have had to sacrifice sports if it weren’t for my concentration in academics.” Before he graduated, Pettigrew represented Queen of Peace at the NJSIAA’s Scholar/Athlete Luncheon at the Pines Manor in Edison. “I think playing baseball and basketball really helped me,”
Pettigrew said. “Sports were stress relievers for me. I went out and played, then came home and concentrated on my school work. It really helped me.” But being the top of his class? It’s truly a remarkable feat to be a standout two-sport athlete and No. 1 in a graduating class. “It’s definitely something I’m proud of,” Pettigrew said. “I had a lot of support over the years, from my parents (mother Pat and father Mike), teachers, administrators, who pushed me so I could accomplish great things. A huge amount of credit has to go to my parents. They supported me every step of the way. I feel very fortunate to be able to do well in both sports and school.” Pettigrew said that some of QP’s top students in the Class of 2015 were also fine athletes, like the Mastrofilippo twins, soccer, basketball and softball standouts Michelle and Micaila, who finished second and third in the class respectively, as well as pole vault queen Catherine Rosalski, who was among the top 10 in see VIEW page

That’s where winning meant everything, because if you won, you kept playing.” Meola was part of the fes-
tivities at the Harrison courts in 2011, when Major League Soccer held its All-Star Game at Red Bull Arena. Meola played as part of an elite club that faced the Harrison High School team in a memorable evening. But here was Meola four years later, coming to a place that didn’t exist when he was a kid growing up in nearby Kearny, when he was on his way to becoming one of the most influential soccer players in United States soccer history, when he was helping Kearny gain the legendary nickname of “Soccertown, USA.” “When I was growing up in Kearny, I never dreamed that a place like this could have existed,” Meola said in a pregame press conference, as the Red Bulls honored him for his
selection to the franchise’s alltime team. “My biggest dream was to pick my father (Vincenzo) up and take him to a game and I’m doing that tonight. I’m really excited about that.” When Meola left the Red Bulls after his second tour with the franchise was completed in 2006, he left a bitter man. Meola gave his all to the Red Bulls for two seasons (2005 and 2006) and thought he had a chance to be the starting goalkeeper in 2007. But the Red Bulls thought otherwise and released the then 36-year-old Meola, who then continued his career playing indoor soccer for the New Jersey Ironmen of the Major Indoor Soccer League, where he finished his Hall of Fame see MEOLA next page

a New Jersey native, Meola was allocated to the old New York/New Jersey MetroStars, which played at the now razed Giants Stadium. When the MLS started, Meola was in goal for the MetroStars and remained there for the first three seasons of the franchise. “I’ve watched this league grow and after 20 years, we’re in a new era of the MLS,” Meola said. “The league has done some great things. I’m just excited to be a small part of the development of the league. I just remember advice my father gave me. He said for me to keep the ball rolling. I’ve kept it going my whole life.” Meola was asked about his greatest memory playing for the MetroStars. “I’d have to say that first night against New England, walking out of the tunnel and there

It’s hard to argue being the top of the class. “Looking back at my four years of high school, I have a lot of good memories,” Pettigrew said. “I was able to accomplish a lot of good things. I just hope I can continue it on into college.”

Pettigrew has yet to decide on a major. “It’s why I chose a liberal arts college like Drew, because I am not sure yet,” Pettigrew said. “I’m considering engineering and economics, but I don’t know.” Pettigrew said that he chose Drew, which is located in nearby Madison, for several reasons. He received a Baldwin Honors Scholarship to attend school there. “The coach (Brian Hirschberg) is the nicest guy,” Pettigrew said. “I’ve met

I’m really excited about the next four years.” And if he begins to feel just a little homesick or needs Mom to do his laundry, well, he’s only 30 minutes away. “It was a tough process, but I was glad to have a few options,” Pettigrew said. When you’re a valedictorian, there’s an old saying. There’s no place like home. Or something like that.

baseball campaign on a team that struggled mightily this past spring. He batted .514 (35-for-68) with 10 doubles, four triples and 22 RBI. He also finished his career on an absolute tear, going 11-for-15 with three doubles, three triples and 10 RBI. He had a four-hit, four-RBI game against Dwight-Englewood in one of his final appearances in a Golden Griffin uniform. Pettigrew earned All-NJIC Liberty Division honors for a second straight year in baseball. He also received recognition from the AllNJIC Liberty in the winter for basketball. “Winning and losing really didn’t matter that much to me, as long as I played hard and I had a good time,” Pettigrew said. “I love playing baseball so much. That’s basically all I could ask for.” Right before the baseball season started, Pettigrew decided that he would attend Drew and play baseball there. “It honestly had a huge impact on me,” Pettigrew
Pettigrew spent his summer months playing baseball for the Bergen Swamp Rats (now there’s an attractive name) in the highly competitive Met League, perhaps the best semi-pro baseball league in northern New Jersey. Pettigrew played on the Swamp Rats with five or so others who play collegiately at Drew. “It gave me a head start,” Pettigrew said. “I tried to do whatever I could to be as prepared as possible for college baseball.” The Met League uses strictly wood bats, so the transformation from composite and aluminum bats was a little tough getting used to at first. Obviously, the pitching was also better than what Pettigrew had been used to facing on a regular basis. “But it was nice to be able to take a step up a little and play already with college players,” Pettigrew said. “It was a very good experience.” Pettigrew hit .350 in the Met League and showed his versatility, playing second

Carley Martin may only be 12, but she’s having a ball in life as a basketball player and softball pitcher, helped by a grandfather figure who passed away last June. ter and softball in the spring. Carley also enjoys writing. “I love to write,” Martin said. “I want to become a journalist one day. I love to write about anything. I think I’m really good at writing, but I want to get better.” Martin also wanted to get better at pitching after watching the University of Alabama play in the NCAA championships. “I just liked the rush of being out there pitching,” Martin said. “I liked the fact that everything was in my hands.” So when Martin became serious about becoming a pitcher, her father, Chuck, the former boys’ basketball coach at Lyndhurst High, decided to take Carley to the town’s resident expert on pitching softball, namely long-time private and St. Mary’s High School coach Jim MacDonald. “I knew Coach Mac well from his coaching days,” Chuck Martin said. “I knew he was a lover of all sports, but really if there was someone who could help Carley, it was Mac.” However, MacDonald’s time was extremely precious. He didn’t just open his arms, heart and mind to every kid that came along. “I was told he was busy,” said Michelle Martin, Carley’s mother.
The Martins had a hook. Carley’s best friend is Adam Venezia, the son of Frank Venezia, the long-time St. Mary’s head softball coach and Lyndhurst schools administrator, who was very close to MacDonald. “Frank spoke to Mac and one thing led to another,” Michelle Martin said. “We said that we wanted Carley to go to the best coach and that Mac was definitely the best.” With that, Jim MacDonald uttered the four words that would change Carley Martin’s world forever. “Yeah, I’ll take her,” Michelle Martin said. “He liked that Carley was a lefty,” Chuck Martin said. “He’s a lefty. The only worry was fitting her into his schedule. If there was fill-in time or if someone canceled, then that’s when we went.” MacDonald set up his shop at the Lyndhurst batting cages. Carley Martin was all of nine years old when she first met Coach Mac. “He was like a grandfather to me,” Carley Martin said. “He yelled at me right away and said some hard stuff, but it didn’t bother me. I felt like he was helping me.” “What I loved about it and respected him the most for was his no-nonsense apcontinued next page

proach,” Chuck Martin said. “He had the old school way of coaching. He said, ‘Pick her up in an hour and get lost.’” MacDonald didn’t want or need parental guidance during the private pitching lessons. It was just Carley and Coach Mac for an hour a couple times a week. “He was very nurturing,” Michelle Martin said. “He molded her in a positive way. I think that’s what she needed.” MacDonald had a message for young Carley. He said that any sport is 99% mental and that a successful athlete had to handle the sport mentally first. “That’s the way he went about it,” Chuck Martin said. “Because he was the most experienced coach, he held that gamut. She put a lot of time into getting better.” “He wasn’t in it for the money,” Michelle Martin said. “He always gave Carley positive feedback.” What did Carley learn most from Coach Mac? “Determination and love for the sport,” Carley Martin said. “He used to call me ‘Alligator Martin,” because every time I threw, I didn’t straighten my arm a certain way and my arm looked like an alligator. He told me, ‘Carley, if you throw strikes,
it doesn’t matter what the speed is. That’s all that matters. It’s location. You can get by throwing strikes rather than throwing all over the place.” And then MacDonald would do the nicest of things. “He would kiss me on the forehead and tell me that I was the greatest,” Carley Martin said. “He said he loved me.” In June of 2014, MacDonald, who never revealed his age to anyone (but Carley insists he was 76) started to fall ill. “It was June 10 and it was the night of one of my hitting lessons,” Carley Martin said. “Everyone was whispering and saying things. When I got home, my father met me in the driveway and told me that Mac had died. I cried so hard.” It was the night of Martin’s championship game in the Lyndhurst Recreation League. “I didn’t want to pitch that night,” Martin said. “That’s the way Carley is,” Michelle Martin said. “She wouldn’t go back to the Lyndhurst batting cages. We asked her and she just wouldn’t go.” Then it hit Martin. “He would always say that I was a dreamer,” Carley Martin said. “He told me that I was going to pitch somewhere special and that he was going to come

watch me pitch. Well, now he’ll watch over me. It’s the only reason why I went back.” Carley Martin, the aspiring writer, had an assignment to write for school. She decided to write about Coach Mac. “It took me two months to get what I wanted to say,” Carley Martin said. “My teacher, Kristin Marron, helped me.” Here’s Carley’s finished product and tribute to Coach Mac:

some of you reading this might think. But I say it’s only the beginning. Yes, written by a 12-year-old. “I wrote it on the anniversary of his death,” Carley said. Obviously, Coach Mac was a special person. Carley still pays tribute to her coach a year after his passing. She has his name written on her bedroom wall and his name written on the back of her softball cleats. “Before I start a game, I step off the mound and touch the back of my shoe with his name on it,” Carley Martin said. Carley also changed her uniform number this season from No. 6 to No. 33 in honor of Coach Mac. As for the essay? “I just wrote it for fun, but I wanted people to see it,” Martin said. “I’ve been told it’s pretty good.” Just like her pitching skills, throwing the ball like Coach Mac wanted. Hey, when life gives you lemons, make orange juice. Whatever that means, it will stick with Carley Martin for the rest of her life, just like the impact that Jim MacDonald made on that little girl from Lyndhurst.

According to a recent poll, Americans regard loss of vision as potentially having the biggest impact on everyday life as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and HIV, which were ranked as the top four “worst things that could happen to you.” Fortunately, 80 percent of visual impairment can be prevented or cured. As far as the remaining 20 percent is concerned, there is good reason for hope. While diseases of the retina such as retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, and Usher syndrome are not currently deemed curable, there are treatments. Current research involving the transplantation of stem cells offers hope of a cure in the not-too-distant future. In the meantime, the best way to guard against vision loss is through a
comprehensive examination. The use of stem cells is promising and may epitomize the future for replacement and regeneration of some ocular damage. Active Koko needs attentive owner Koko (ID#16403) is a male, medium size Australian Cattle dog. This handsome fellow was found as a stray and brought to the Bergen County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center. Fortunately, he was microchipped and although his owners did not want him back, shelter volunteers were lucky enough to find out his name. Even though Koko is more on the independent side, he will run over to you if you call him over nicely. Koko loves his backside pet but once he catches a whiff of something good, he’s off like a rocket. At 5-years-old, this gorgeous Australian Cattle Dog mix still has plenty of energy and drive, therefore

physical and mental stimulation ranging from walks, continued training, well-mannered socialization and play. Shelter volunteers advise the more time you put into providing him a balanced lifestyle, the more he will be ever so grateful for giving him a second chance to feel loved. The shelter is located at 100 United Lane, Teterboro. Call 201229-4600 for additional details. Many other adoptable animals can be seen at www.petfinder.com/ shelters/NJ29.html. Headstone mystery still unsolved By Kevin Canessa Jr. Observer Correspondent NUTLEY – Police here are trying to figure out how a tombstone with an engraving on it made its way to the NJ Transit bus terminal on Washington Ave. last week — and they’re hoping to locate the family to which the stone belongs. Det. Sgt. Anthony Montanari said police were called to the terminal after an employee reported finding the tombstone during an annual removal of weeds from fencing on the depot property. Six months ago, when gravel stone was put down in the weeded area, the
headstone wasn’t there, according to Montanari. The name on the stone is Max Ferreira. The birth date on the stone is June 16, 1990, and the date of death is Sept. 29, 1998. It is not yet clear whether the stone belongs to a person or if it’s a sample that made its way from an engraver. Meanwhile, Nutley police said they sent an alert to surrounding towns, but it’s possible no one has reported it missing yet. Police said they are calling local cemeteries to try to determine where the stone belongs. A call from the NPD to the state Office of Vital Statistics has not yet been returned, according to Montanari.

“If this was the loss of a child, his parents must have been devastated, and to learn that someone would intentionally remove his headstone is unnerving,” Mayor and Police Director Alphonse Petracco said. “I hope that someone can identify how this occurred so that we can return it to where it belongs.” Chief Thomas Strumolo said: “Until we can determine how and why this headstone was left, we can only speculate that it was removed from a human grave.” Detectives said they hope someone recognizes the name on the tombstone and contacts the Nutley Police Department at 973-284-4940.
